Free messaging and voice app Viber comes to BlackBerry
Viber, a free call and messaging application, has arrived on BlackBerry in beta form. The app has been available for both iOS and Android for a while and now is finally on the BlackBerry platform as well. The app currently allows for free messaging (text and photo) to other Viber users, but sadly is lacking the calling feature (for now). Viber plans to bring a full release -- including calling -- to BlackBerry "as it meets Viber's quality standards" however. You can grab the beta free in BlackBerry App World.

How does Viber earn revenue? So my friends need to be on Viber too?
kill_9 May 10, 2012 at 2:28 pm
From the BlackBerry AppWorld description, "Viber lets you send text and photo messages, anywhere in the world (Free calls coming soon as well). All you need is a 3G or WiFi connection, and friends who get Viber too."
mavricxx May 10, 2012 at 2:57 pm
Please bring it to the PlayBook too!!!

Useless without the voice...And still waiting for Skype...
Rootbrian May 11, 2012 at 3:55 am
Just be patient. Skype is only for verizon and 3UK. Until they stop restricting usage of the app on other platforms, we're without it.
igor10000 May 10, 2012 at 4:07 pm
Well, that is a disappointment. There´s plenty of other texting/messaging apps, I was waiting for Viber only because of the calling feature. At this moment, not even worth downloading.
TheStoof May 10, 2012 at 4:12 pm
I'd say it's worth it if you're American. AT&T and Verizon seem to have issues sending duplicate messages. Hell, sometimes there are three or four replicate messages. It's annoying as hell and slow. SMS sucks.
WhatsApp drains iPhone batteries, so my friends won't use it. Vibe seems to do the trick.
igor10000 May 10, 2012 at 4:25 pm
Hmm, Bold´s batter is also draining fast these days, you brought me to the idea WhatsApp might be the culprit.

Would anyone upload OTA link? TIA.
Rootbrian May 11, 2012 at 3:53 am
Just use appworld.
ant.skrebsky May 10, 2012 at 5:24 pm
perfectly happy with WhatsApp, not sure about this one... bring Skype instead, please!
Rootbrian May 11, 2012 at 3:54 am
No skype until verizon and 3UK release their grasp over it.

timmartin May 10, 2012 at 6:04 pm
Yep, its buggy, my 9900 also froze had to power off and on again and go an uncaught exception error. Unfortunately there is no Viber feedback via the phone, so hope they are reading this!

Did you say free call?
Well, will see, if ever voip is implemented.
Poncherelly May 11, 2012 at 8:45 am
Since it A Beta I'm not "complaining " but after installing, it set my bb in to a reboot cycle and I had to reload the OS. Since this is a corporate device, it took some time to get back to good.
The cause might have been caused by a restriction in our corporate policy on the Best, so I can't be sure who to fault for this, but I am tentative to try to load again.

Very few of my friends and family use BlackBerry's and most (on any platform) aren't going to go to the trouble of installing a 3rd party app. The moral of the story? I need new friends.
ugbadboy May 13, 2012 at 2:38 am
This has got to be the most buggy beta I've tested! It does send text and pics but its uses up a ton of the phone's resources, opening it takes about 2 min, with constant *hour glassing* so I uninstalled it waiting for a better beta or the full version. And since its a beta, I think Viber (the company) should provide better support receiving our emails straight, not directing us to the site!

@Poncherelly and @ugbadboy- What kind of BB do you have??

Adrianobr May 20, 2012 at 2:37 pm
do not sync with my contact book on my 9900 !!!
coldtone May 14, 2012 at 6:47 am
I installed this app only to realize that it seriously drained a fully charged battery in less than 6 hours.
I logged a complaint and got a response. I'll be waiting for a proper version.
Anyone else had this problem?
1oo1 May 20, 2012 at 8:38 am
Same problem here. I have a curve 8520 running jsl hybrid and that app completely drained my battery. Am not installing it until free wifi calls are implemented.

Hi all,
We apologize for our delayed response:
- If you can't download Viber from AppWorld, you can find it in this direct link: http://bit.ly/KSxfu1
- About the the ringtone change - unfortunately this option is not yet available. We plan to implement it in the future :)
- About the battery drain - we're checking this issue these days, and we hope that in our coming upgrades improvements in that regards will be made. Stay tuned for news and updates!
