Create New Files for Free...

Our pal and part-time CrackBerry blogger Al Sacco posted an awesome BlackBerry tip yesterday on his CIO.com blog. When playing around with OS4.5, it seems Al figured out a way to create new Word, Excel and Powerpoint Files within the Standard FREE Version of Documents to Go that's included on the OS. The exciting scoop here is that the Create New File functionality is only supposed to be available in the Premium ($70) version:

Trying to create new files in Documents to Go Standard Edition the official way-by clicking your BlackBerry Menu key and selecting New while within the program-will only get you a dialogue box asking if you want to upgrade to the Premium Edition. However, creating new Word or PowerPoint files "unofficially" really couldn't be easier.

PowerPoint and Word Files
Simply send a Word or PowerPoint file to the e-mail address associated with your device-or transfer one to your media card using RIM's Desktop Manager software-and save it. Next, open Documents to Go on your BlackBerry, choose whether you want to open Word to Go or Slideshow to Go, navigate to the file location and open it. From there you should erase all the contents of the document, rename it and save it as something like "New_PowerPoint_Template."

Then whenever you want to create a new file all you need to do is open the blank template, create your file, save it as a new name and you're good to go.

I don't want to giveaway away all of Al's awesome tip here, so head over to CIO.com to find out the secret for Excel files and for more details. Great find Al! Let's see if it lasts!!

You can do this with all the standard versions of Docs To Go on all of the available platforms. Dataviz has not removed this capacity on any of the other platforms that have had it for years (probably because most people would not think to do it), so I suspect it will last awhile on the Blackberry.

On the other hand, there is a great deal of functionality added by the Premium version aside for creating new files. The upgrade price is worth it if you need the additional features.

Having used Docs To Go for years on the Palm OS, I think it is an excellent piece of kit. :)

This is awesome. I had never thought of doing this. There is still one flaw in this as far as the Slides go. You can still not insert new slides. So the "template" you "Save As" must have the maximum templates you think you may need in the future, cause you cannot add slides to a presentation in the standard version. Just know that ahead of time and you will save yourself some grief! Great tip!

Pretty neat little workaround.

I was playing myself with Documents to Go. Really, really thanks a lot for the tips.

I simply put several empty docs on the sd card. Nice way to save space until needed.

How do you exactly erase the contents? All i get is an edit option. Then when i try to edit, I get an error message saying there is not enough space.. Trying freeing up some space then try again.. I know my mem card is not full..

It doesn't support Office 2007. I got all excited for nothing.

Thanks...I tried it and it works perfectly.

Anonymous Verizon customer

I waited and waited for Verizon to offer 4.5. I even resisted the temptation to download from anther carrier for fear of loss of data access. Finally, they released it and low and behold, no Docs To Go! Thanks a lot.
Docs To Go does not come with Verizon's version of 4.5 Device Software.
