Man, RIM is really funny with their marketing. Sponsoring U2 and now Foo Fighters. Not only are their phones behind the times (slightly), but so is their taste in music. Don't get me wrong, I am a Blackberry fan (although a little disappointed in the initial PB reviews). Also, I like U2, they have done some great stuff. Not a huge fan of Foo Fighters, but I can understand why people like them. Thing is, these are not cutting edge acts. They have been around for years.

I really don't know who RIM is trying to advertise to. Then again, I am not an ad man. Problem for RIM is that they aren't exactly winning the battle.

Just my thoughts.

@chi-town311, are you kidding? Both bands are pretty timeless if you ask me. Granted that is your opinion and sure you're entitled to it but to make statements that you're not a huge Foo Fighters fan and then go on to say that you're not an Ad Man either sort of cancels out your whole post and comments doesn't it??

Any music promoting is a good thing and great for a company if they get an artist behind it. (duh) i'm not a big U2 fan myself but love what they do as artists and Blackberry choosing U2 and then Foo Fighters is fantastic. I'm at a loss how you think Foo Fighters are not on the cutting edge? i'm not even sure what that means?? Cutting edge as in what? using Auto-Tune voices and bandless acts like Katie Perry? maybe thats more your bag?

My opinion is this is great advertising and a FUN way to do it! Keeping it simple in the things you love. The End. ;)

Foo Fighters are one of the hardest working bands in rock today, and no other band does more for their fans.

Over the last month, to promote their new album and give fans a little extra, they have had secret gigs, leaked their own CD online weeks before it released, they aired their new documentary for free instead of releasing it on DVD for $$$, had a 3D concert in theaters for a 1-night-only-show, have done the TV show circuit, had had free online shows playing the entire new CD (including a 2 hour awesome show from the Ed Sullivan theater), played in contest winners' garages...

On top of that, they are known for touring almost non stop for their fans, and are one of the best live bands around. If you dont like em, thats your choice, but they are what a rock band should be, and are a dying breed, IMO.

ALL HAIL FOOS!!!!

Sorry to offend the Foo Fighter fans. I don't mean to offend. Like I said, I recognize they are talented. I am impressed by all the touring you claim they do. I don't follow them; but, I do respect musicians who perform live frequently. It is how music should be enjoyed.

To be honest, the one that annoys me the most was the Black Eyed Peas. I mean, seriously.

The way I look at it, U2 kind of just reminds me of 1988. They have great music and I truly enjoyed the only time I saw them live, but they are not innovating. They are not cutting edge. They were 20 years ago, maybe 10. But not today.

Foo Fighters I really can't comment on. I get it, you guys like them. That is great. I personally don't like their style. Didn't like grunge, still don't. I've heard some of their music and they clearly know what they are doing and can write some great music. But I don't like their style. Like U2 though, their style is from a previous decade, and not even the prior decade.

Not saying they need to go pop (although they did with BEP who I think is probably one of the biggest sell out acts ever), but there are a lot of artists out there who are more relevant and could attract more attention from a younger (consumer) audience. But heck, I am not running their marketing department, so it is kind of irrelevant what I think.

@ zipper. Not sure how saying I am not an Ad man cancels out what I said. I'm just saying I am not an expert. As always, just my opinion.

I agree they are timeless. Unfortunately the time was over 10 years ago. Would you think a tour promotion with the likes of Robert Plant would be great? I love Zeppelin, but how many people who are in the smart phone market would care if Plant and BB teamed up. The point is to attract new customers and to do it with limited resources. You can't sponsor everyone and I'm guessing some acts cost more than others. You have to go for biggest bang for the bucks.
