Files and Folders

The first thing I do when I come home from work is fire up my BlackBerry PlayBook. This time, however, it notified me that an update for one of my favorite cloud and utlity applications was available. Files and Folders by Innovatology improves with each release and for this one it didn't just receive an incremental update but a completely new version. The update adds bug fixes, enhancements, and a built-in streamiing media player! Keep reading for the complete list of release notes for v6.0.

Release Notes

  • NEW! Built-in streaming media player:
    • Streams many video & audio files from the cloud! Streamed media starts almost at once - no need to download first
    • Streamed media doesn't take up space on your PlayBook.
    • Supported for all our cloud services: Dropbox, Box, Google Docs/Drive, SkyDrive, SugarSync
    • Plays back local media files too!
    • Optionally keeps the screen on during playback, configurable from the Settings screen.
    • Uses the PlayBooks audio & video playback engine with hardware decoding for best performance and battery life.
  • NEW! Added Location screen. Tap the path in the title bar of any folder to jump quickly to:
    • All your cloud services;
    • Your starred folders;
    • Recently visited folders;
    • Folders above the current folder.
    • Of course you can still swipe down to access your cloud services & starred folders too.
  • NEW! You can now hide cloud services that you do not use in the Setting screen.
  • ENHANCED! Many Dropbox changes:
    • This version uses a new way to talk to Dropbox. The old mechanism will be discontinued by DropBox soon.
    • As part of the new mechanism, we no longer ask for your Dropbox login details, but simply direct you to the Dropbox website to login and authorize access.
    • Maximum number of files per folder in Dropbox increased from 1000 to 25000.
  • ENHANCED! Improved thumbnail view:
  • Multi-select now works in thumbnail view, allowing for fast selection of photos. Tap the multi-select icon, then tap the green checkmarks to select or deselect images;
  • Thumbnail view now shows the file name below the image;
  • Thumbnail aspect ratio is now selectable from the Settings screen: square (1x1), regular (4x3) or Wide (16x9).
  • ENHANCED! Switching between detail, icon and thumbnail views is now done with a dropdown menu.
  • NEW! Option to disable animations from the settings screen.
  • ENHANCED! Visual feedback when searching inside subfolders.
  • ENHANCED! The online version of our Help feature has a Google Translate option.
  • ENHANCED! We now also publish a list of Frequently Asked Questions. Feel free to e-mail us if your question is not answered.
  • ENHANCED! Animations and screen transitions can now be disabled for better performance
  • FIXED! Could not create new folders in the Google Drive "My Drive" root.
  • FIXED! You can still store your doc, xls, ppt files on Google Drive, but Google has removed the ability to convert Google Docs files to Office 2003 formats (doc, xls, ppt). It can still convert to the new Office 2007 formats (docx, xlsx, pptx), and it can still convertfrom the old formats. Files & Folders has been updated accordingly and now defaults to the Office 2007 formats for converting Google Docs files. Please note that this was a decision by Google, not by us.
  • FIXED! Multi-select copy of folders from the cloud would sometimes create an incorrect folder structure.
  • Many other minor fixes and performance improvements.

You can grab the full version at the link below for $2.99 in BlackBerry App World. The update for the free trial willl be available soon.

Files and Folders for PlayBook updated to v6.0 - Adds built-in streaming media player, bug fixes and more!

This reminds me, I have a question about the HDMI out on PB:

Can I project a PDF document via HDMI and do something else on my playbook?

SO I want to show the PDF presentation on the projector and on my screen I want to see notes, is that possible?

I do believe their is an app that allows you to reference notes during a presentation but I'm not sure what it's called.

Check out the forms I'm sure you'll get better results on your query there. Good luck.

There may be an application that does this, but the included adobe PDF viewer does not support presentation mode. When connected to HDMI it will display the same thing on the playbook and the HDMI connected screen.

i love this app. it is officially on my playbooks's five most frequently used short cut bar app

Awesome App. Definitely one of my top 5 used apps including Blaq, MoneyPlus, Conqu, TV Links. worth every penny of the $3... Can't wait for the BB10 version!

I'm looking for the same thing, and quickly updated my app to try it out. No good. I'm still just using the TwonkyMedia server media browser.

I haven't bought this because I use file browser but I think I'm gonna take the plunge now. Too many features to pass up. I'll wait for the trial to get updated and check it out. If it's as good as it seems, ill be 3 bucks lighter ;)

I assure you its as good as it seems and better. You won't be disappointed. Even it was $5 it still be worth every penny.

I wonder how it will hold up against the native file manager in BlackBerry 10, similar question with Blaq also against a native Twitter app, esp. with Twitters policy changes for 3rd party apps.

This is awesome! Now I can keep all of my bands music and vids in the cloud instead of on the device.
Thanks Innovatology!!!!!!!!!!

Files & Folders is probably the one "must-have" paid app I can think of on the Playbook. It's good enough that I think RIM should seriously consider just buying them outright.

i get the feeling that something like this will be native to the PB-BB10 os. gona hold off til 2014 and see if BB10 for PB actually cums thru.

If you tap on Dropbox or SkyDrive, etc.. and you don't have an account, how do you get back from the respective log in page to the Files and Folders main window?

Alright, I'll bite. DOwnloading as soon as I get home. I'm a Google Drive user, what are some "Don't miss" features of this app?

ES file explorer (sideloaded) has done this for ages now, which I've been extremely happy with. It's enabled me to to stream videos, pictures and documents from any computer or WD Mybook Live NAS drive on my home network, right to my playbook. I'll give this a try though to see how it compares.

Is it safe to use lets say your sugarsync or skydrive account with this app? Can they see the password?

Good question!

All cloud services except SugarSync use a mechanism called OAuth, which keeps your password private. When you log in, you are logging in to the website via a browser embedded in our app. We only store a so-called token, which we use instead of a password. If you no longer wish F&F to have access, you can revoke the token via the cloud providers website or via the app.

For SugarSync we HAVE TO ask for your password - that's not our choice but a limitation of the SugarSync. We would prefer to use OAuth there too, but unfortunately that is not supported by SugarSync.

Thanks for replying

SugarSync is out of question then but even the other services doesnt seem superduper safe. I'll use in connection to ur app then.

NO PLAYBOOK - Hi RIM Factory Asia - When will you finish repair my playbook????
It's been almost 3 weeks ..... Feels like yearssss.

SEA - powered by BlackBerry® Bold 9900 & NO PlayBook™ 32Gb

Nice app..but the weakest poit is it is speed. It drives me bananas to wait when folders read its file structure.
I prefer Ghost Commander. Two panels, and conectivity to smb, ftp..etc

You need button hide dialog show when copy and pase somethings, by the way, es file explorer is free and bester

Can you download files en masse from DropBox? It seems I have to do it one at a time (and open each file) which seems tedious to me.
