Many people were surprised and disappointed when Google announced that they were discontinuing Reader, which would eventually result in many popular RSS apps and services ceasing to work. Luckily, there are always alternatives, and this set of circumstances will allow other developers to step up and show us what they've got in terms of a replacement for Reader. One such company looking to fill the future void left by the discontinuation of Google Reader is Feedly.

Already quite popular among Android, iOS, and desktop users, Feedly announced in a recent interview that they do have plans to make a BlackBerry 10 app, as well as Windows Phone and Windows 8 apps. Feedly already has over 3 million users, and an additional 500,000 were added after the announcement by Google. Undoubtedly many of those already established users are also BlackBerry users (either people carrying multiple devices or using the Feedly service on Firefox, Chrome, or Safari) and the decision to develop for BlackBerry 10 came after many people requested the app.

This is good news all around, both for BlackBerry users and the Feedly team, which is actually fairly small. Keeping that in mind, it might take some time for Feedly to come to BlackBerry 10, but it's great to know that it is in our future. In the meantime, be sure to check out our post on the top 10 news apps that are currently available for BlackBerry 10 at the link below.

Excellent, it's lack of app was the only thing stopping me from making the jump from Google Reader.

Feedly is great. It's on all my desktops, and I have wanted it for BlackBerry since I first used it. Never liked google's presentation so had stopped using it when I switched to Feedly. Glad to see Feedly pays attn to users/potential users, unlike certain companies..cough Insta cough gram cough Skype et,c.

Skype should be released within the next few weeks to us.. I'm sure something just happened and they wanted to make sure it was running properly.. lol look at Facebook I'm sure they don't want their app running like that

Lol, yes the native Facebook sucks. And people here often show such distaste for sideloads.

Out of curiosity, why hasn't Blackberry, which already has a News Reader for legacy devices and had created one for the Playbook, not released one for BB10. It's about the only "app" that I am truly missing.

The Playbook version, for me, us so sloooooowwwww. Always has to reload everything.

Feedly have stated that they are working on a compatible API, which means it would be simple for existing apps to start using Feedly instead of Google Reader. You can already import all your Google Reader subscriptions into Feedly. With the addition of the new API's you could for instance continue to use the excellent gNewsReader once the developer switches to Feedly.

Sweet... still prefer naive Google reader website but nice to have options before Google pulls the plug. hope it is native and makes use of cascades.

Sweet! Just converted to Feedly like 3 days ago! Proud to be their member now!

I was one of the people making lots of noise in the Feedly ideas forum. How much that constant noise from myself and others had to do with their decision, I don't know. However, it can't hurt to keep trying to get your favorite apps on BB10! Keep letting them know what an opportunity they are missing, and they might eventually realize.

Sweet not that I use it much, but it's always good to have more apps, and I would use this from time to time that's for sure.

This is great news - along with GNewsReader using the NewsBlur API, we'll have plenty of choice when it comes to digesting news.

I can't wait for the British based Barclays Banking, pingit and Halifax Banking apps. Since upgrading my handset from the blackberry 9790 to the blackberry Z10 I'm actually lost without those apps which is a big inconvenience to me as I have to log onto my tablet laptop of pc to check balance or to do my Banking. Would love to when these apps will be available. Hopefully very soon.
