FastTube for BlackBerry 10 gets an update bringing a selection of enhancements

By James Richardson on 17 Jan 2014 04:34 am EST

For those of you that favor using a third party application instead of the BlackBerry 10 browser for viewing YouTube videos, you'll be pleased to hear that FastTube has received a small update.

The new features in this latest release are not huge, but every new option adds to the whole experience of using the app. I'm a big fan of FastTube and have used it as my go-to YouTube app of choice since it was first released. Although the BlackBerry 10 browser does a fantastic job, if you prefer the native BlackBerry 10 app experience then give this one a go.

With all the features you would expect - such as your playlists, favorites and subscriptions you can ensure you stay locked to the CrackBerry channel for all your BlackBerry needs!

If you missed our initial hands-on video with FastTube you can catch up here.

New in v1.8.2.38:

  • Open YouTube video links in FastTube from other apps.
  • Search channels support added.
  • Search playlists support added.
  • Option to set default quality.
  • Faster loading of images.

FastTube is free to download and is available for all BlackBerry 10 handsets.

It has black background now. I don't remember if it was so earlier.
Its a great app anyways.

Much better. Even better than metrotube on WP or Jasmine on ios. Wonder how long it will be before the preload option is removed like on youtube for Wp. If you haven't got fastube then get it. Its well maintained.

I tried FastTube and didn't care for it. Too much buffering and wasn't very feature rich at the time. Glad to see the developer(s) is putting in work. I will stick with SuperTube. It already had support for these features minus the playlist search, works fast, and I don't experience any buffering while videos play.

That maybe down to your connection. Even on 3G+ I don't get any buffering. Maybe there's the odd time it takes a while to start but in all honesty I've had that on every other youtube client I've used. They all do it from time to time.

Looks like the app now has a default black theme for the Q10 users.

Lacking Wifi device playback (smart TV) and video preloading for offline viewing. Smart tube does a much better job.

It does have preloading for offline playback. Select the video you want then tap the 3 dots in the corner and it will come up in the menu.

Yah, now the youtube website allows you to play the videos on an external device but this app still doesn't. However, I tried smart tube and liked it even less. Videos sometimes take a few tries to load, previews sometimes don't load until you go back and forth a little bit, it just didn't work that great. Fast tube loads videos faster for me, but I might just use the mobile website so I can play videos full screen on my tv's instead of in a square box...

Can someone confirm that this update still has the preloading please.

Ok so just went to watch my subscriptions and found all the videos are in LQ now?

This is an app I've been using for a long while now and it's really awesome. Hopefully the developer continues to support and further develop the app to have feature parity with the mobile YouTube website. All in all I think everyone who watches YouTube on their BlackBerry 10 device needs this app.

No, doesn't remember your history from searches on other platforms/browser. Just playlists and subscriptions from your account.

Awesome. I have need wanting the ability to open youtube links into FastTube since day one. Glad this is here now!

Another request is landscape mode! (It only currently allows landscape mode for watching videos, but always switches back to portrait for everything else).
