Facebook for BlackBerry v2.0 has been available in the beta zone for a few weeks now, and today RIM has issued another refresh of the popular social networking application. Version 2.0 brings along a new UI for the app as well as Facebook chat and more. The refreshed version is available today for enrolled Beta Zone members. Features include:

  • Support for BlackBerry OS 5.0 - The beta app now supports BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry OS 5 and above.
  • Facebook Chat Enhancements
    • Know when a friend is typing a message by the visual cue of "is typing a message"
    • Filter Online Contacts to quickly find a specific friend and start a Chat message.
  • Mutual Friends and Friends List - Discover which friends you have in common with other users via the Info tab on Profiles (dependent on Privacy Settings of the user).
  • Enhanced integration with BlackBerry native apps - Click on PINs, Phone Numbers, and email addresses displayed in Wall posts, messages or the Info tab, to perform the respective action (e.g., place a call) or save the information to your BlackBerry Contacts application

The new version can be found in the BlackBerry Beta Zone today.

Have they fixed the bug where deleting a facebook message from the BB messages app deletes the actual message from the FB website yet? Until they do I'm not upgrading my FB ap.

I don't think that's a bug but I see what you mean. I've removed integration with my Inbox so all messages stay within the Facebook app.

  • Reply

visualpurple May 6, 2011 at 12:09 pm

I call it a bug facetiously, because it's something that detracts from the usability of the app. I want to be able to view facebook notifications quickly through the messages app, but I don't want IMAP-esque syncing. I want to be able to clear notifications without the actual message being deleted.

Jleeblanch May 6, 2011 at 11:18 pm

I agree with what you're saying...somewhat. It would be legit if deleting Facebook notifications was like deleting any other messages; where you were given the option to delete on Mailbox and/or Handheld; but instead it just deletes it.

For some reason tho I thought even tho I deleted them off my BB, they were still on the web/mobile site. Hmm, gonna have to look into that.

Yeah same here after agreeing to participate in the program , when get to the second page to agree ... I get no option to agree to move on from there ....

  • Reply

jem9777 May 6, 2011 at 10:51 am

I ran into the same thing, so I logged in on my desktop computer and was able to agree to move on there. Then when I went back to my phone the download screen was available.

can anyone extract it and create a OTA for the non beta users?

  • Reply

chevrolet.racing252 May 6, 2011 at 11:52 am

Jai,

That would be pointless because the app requires a pin-calculated keycode in order to run on your phone after installing.

Best thing to do is just join Beta Zone....its a free membership and once u give them ur pin they will be able to generate keycodes for any beta programs you chose to participate in. I don't use facebook at all, but my wife and sister both do and both of them are currently running BBM6 beta and facebook beta on their phone, and I was part of the BBM5 and now BBM6 programs myself. Even tried BlackBerry Traffic, Podcast and news reader when they first came out.

It's a free program and it let's u communictate with RIM ur thoughts, feedback, bugs and feature suggestions.

Last time I check, the Beta Zone is currently not accepting new members at this time.

I registered successfully but how do I get this keycode if it says one doesn't exist?? The link to request another also does not exist for me to click on.

You have to download the program first. Then the key code is automated.

Trying to use BOLT now, see if that can let me continue onto the next page. Gotta love having 3 browsers on your BB, right? :| :/

Yup, BOLT will do the trick if you have no access to a computer.

Have they restored the check STATUS UPDATE option in this version? They omited the Status Update view in the first version and its rather annoying. I dont give a rats ass about what pictures people have uploaded or what games people are playing. Having only News Feed SUCKS!

Anyone?

  • Reply

Jleeblanch May 6, 2011 at 11:52 pm

They are a menu option in version 2.0.x. *View News Feed*, *View Status Updates*, *View Photos*, *View Links*, it's all there after pressing the BB () button when on the main screen of the app. :)

Not a big fan of it for 5.0 on my Tour. Not very intuitive for a non touch BB. It now takes 2 clicks to get to my messages or notifications, 1 click to get the "drop down" then i still have to navigate to either the messages or notifications... i know, not much, but when it used to be just 1.. meh.

I am using on my 5.0.0.979 and the first thing that I don't like, the HUGE "WALL, INFO, PHOTO" tabs.

Other than that, it is lightening quick and awesome. Trying chat now.

The original post regarding this beta (weeks ago) had a screenshot with an icon for Events. Recent screenshots and the actual beta version don't have the Events feature yet. The iPhone app does have Events. What's the hold-up, anyone know?

The biggest factor keeping me hooked to FB is the Events feature so I'm anxious to know if/when I'll be able to access my FB events without having to go to the mobile site. This app should make the mobile site obsolete but it hasn't quite done that yet.
