Facebook for BlackBerry v1.9 now available in BlackBerry Beta Zone
By
Bla1ze on 25 Oct 2010 01:05 pm
We've been wondering when Research In Motion was going to update Facebook for BlackBerry. I guess today, we now know. Facebook version 1.9 was just released to BlackBerry Beta Zone members and brings with it a lot of new changes and features:
- Dedicated Inbox – View your Facebook messages in one separate inbox or within your BlackBerry messages inbox. The app pre-fetches 30 of your existing messages, and will then continue to sync messages on your BlackBerry smartphone with your Facebook inbox.
- Facebook Search – Search for individuals and pages, making it easy to find mutual friends, add friends and “like” pages. For BlackBerry 6 users, Universal Search will pull Facebook results too!
- Enhanced Friends List and Page List – View Friends profile photos and pages in list form
- Redesigned Navigation Bar – View your own profile and click on the Search and Message icons with the new navigation bar
Keep in mind you must be a BlackBerry Beta Zone member in order to access the download and only a limited number of openings are available currently. So, you'll wanna head on over to the BlackBerry Beta Zone quickly.

While this is an improvement, SocialScope is still the winner, in my opinion, until Facebook for BlackBerry has chat on it.
kjwatkins Oct 25, 2010 at 1:19 pm
Agreed...the SocialScope facebook/twitter integration (especially with the recent update) is definitely the winner. & I use beejive for fb chat.
skygear Oct 25, 2010 at 1:31 pm
the rush is overflowing the servers
AjStone Oct 25, 2010 at 1:40 pm
Understatement... I thought Slashdot banned the use of incompetent and inadequate webservers worldwide?
shupor Oct 25, 2010 at 1:34 pm
grabbed one and all thanks to crackberry.
Thanks to the crackberry team(most especially on twitter) for always keeping me in the loop

Still lacking Facebook Places? #fail-again-from-RIM
thebrownguy01 Oct 25, 2010 at 1:38 pm
why don't you just use foursquare and then post to facebook from within the app if you really need all your facebook friends to know where you are all the time?
mpscan Oct 25, 2010 at 1:46 pm
Because you can't tag friends with you, which is 1/2 the reason for Places in the first place. No chat. No places.
There are 2 billion people on the internet and 560 million Facebook accounts. Arguably, Facebook is the most popular application on any smartphone on any platform by sheer numbers.
RIM's product is so far behind other platforms it's laughable -- and they put out a beta without Chat or Places? Seriously?? I mean, are they intentionally trying to fail at gaining a part of the consumer market?
AjStone Oct 25, 2010 at 1:54 pm
According to the last few paragraphs of the BlackBerry Blog article: http://blogs.blackberry.com/2010/10/facebook-for-blackberry-v1-9-now-in-..., Facebook Places will arrive on the final release of 1.9.

In your Browser works for non-touch screen phones guys and places works on my Bold 9650 not sure if it worked on my Curve 8530 cause I never tried. But the touch.facebook.com site is way better and loads sometimes instantly.
cp3for3 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Yours actually work? I can only view people's places but I can't check into mine on my Tour. Interesting.
hunoosh Oct 25, 2010 at 1:36 pm
Not too thrilled. I guess the search is worth a lil upgrade but damn RIM what's up with the chat and video upload?!?!?!?!
qjedi7 Oct 25, 2010 at 1:37 pm
Yep! I got as far as the Software Agreement and then the site choked and now get nothing at all but an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error message....
qjedi7 Oct 25, 2010 at 3:59 pm
Well, ths site appears to be back up, and I can get all the way to the download link but get a message saying that there is no Blackberry device connected to the computer. Well, let's see the BB is charging and I see both the internal memory and SD card as two drives...so I would say that there is a BB connected to this computer....Guess the site is still not quite there yet....will just keep trying...
luqman24 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:43 pm
This ish doesn't work. I get an Internal Server Error message...
*Edit** Nvm got it to work. Its a good improvement but still missing some key features like video uploading and chat. Still will be using it though.
AjStone Oct 25, 2010 at 1:43 pm
I have no idea how or why, but right after I clicked the Accept button of the software license agreement, my BlackBerry threw up a white screen error and then rebooted...
It's so beta, it has issues even before you load it on your phone!
ericpicco Oct 25, 2010 at 2:30 pm
that's a problem with your phone then, mine worked fine
20blackone00 Oct 25, 2010 at 1:44 pm
I keep getting the internal error aslo =(
crump84 Oct 25, 2010 at 1:44 pm
Will this version be available for non BIS users?
Jean-luc_Picard Oct 25, 2010 at 1:46 pm
The crackberry community is a force to be reconned with! As far as I know, they've caused 2 website breakdowns so far! And I love exclamation points!
MILLYBLICK Oct 25, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Well Said!!
haymond Oct 25, 2010 at 1:52 pm
server down keep getting error
jabbs1 Oct 25, 2010 at 1:52 pm
omg the crackheads crashed the site again!
shupor Oct 25, 2010 at 2:08 pm
with thousands of users trying to grab 1 of a limited amount of copies it's to be expected.
I got the same issues a few times i.e "internal server error" and "invalid cod" but it eventually came through.
Keep trying
jasonvw Oct 25, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Site is definetely getting hammered. Oh well I can wait till I get home. Sure the rush will be over.
AjStone Oct 25, 2010 at 2:25 pm
Yeah, and all the available beta spots will be taken.
hardee Oct 25, 2010 at 2:24 pm
I'm Running 6.0 on my 9650. I keep getting a message after the download starts (after the "facebook module will be replaced" message that says " the downloaded module is incompatible with data already stored on the device". Do I need to delete my existing facebook app before this download, is this a 6.0 issue, or what?
vistate1 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:29 pm
i figured i'd help out...i've got 6 tabs on my torch trying to reach it....FTW!
bcpalma Oct 25, 2010 at 2:30 pm
Signed into my beta acct. I enrolled and was informed they would email me the key code within 10 minutes. Been 30 minutes.....
BBFTW88 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Check your junk folder, I had two key codes from them in there.
I like it.
cp3for3 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:43 pm
Mine took an hour so I e-mailed them. Got back 45 minutes later.
JudasShawn Oct 25, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Error 500 message. Way to go BlackBerry!
mhouston02 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:42 pm
bronko213 - the key code is sent once your download the actual Facebook program. The enrollment screen is a little misleading.
bcpalma Oct 25, 2010 at 2:58 pm
And the link to download must be on the beta page that is crashing right now?
Dankees Oct 25, 2010 at 2:43 pm
The Dedicated Inbox Is A Nice Addition, The Friends List Is Much Nicer, & The Search Feature Is Better...
I Could Do Without The Extremely Long Keycode That Took Forever To Come To My E-Mail...
snowfree52 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:44 pm
I can't find where in the website I have to enroll from my phone. can someone tell ?
juwaack68 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:45 pm
...until the servers have been taken off life support before I try and download.
flectronics Oct 25, 2010 at 2:47 pm
Where i can find the link?
myatalef Oct 25, 2010 at 2:52 pm

vagabanda Oct 25, 2010 at 2:49 pm
did the registration using my PC because its faster and now i'll download using my blackberry
bcpalma Oct 25, 2010 at 3:13 pm
Your genius is showing.....worked like a charm!
myatalef Oct 25, 2010 at 2:50 pm
download from here - http://bb.antihackerlink.or.id/download.php?view.494
but it wont help if you dont have the Keycode....
which i dont.....
aparkins30 Oct 25, 2010 at 3:04 pm
trust links like this...plus like he said it's useless without the key that bb has to email to you and its all for a slight facebook update. patience....
cp3for3 Oct 25, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Right off the bat...the top bar looks cleaner. The facebook pages and your friend list not only load up faster, but they also look better as well. Better menu navigation. Nothing too major though.
aparkins30 Oct 25, 2010 at 3:29 pm
Anybody not getting the code emailed to them? It said 10 minutes been about 40
bcpalma Oct 25, 2010 at 3:34 pm
have you downloaded it? At that point, your on the (10 min) clock.
rgorman Oct 25, 2010 at 3:52 pm
10 minutes? I waited less than 10 seconds. While it was downloading, I received my PIN code...
aparkins30 Oct 25, 2010 at 3:52 pm
been on my phone for about 40 minutes...I just emailed the link they gave to see if they could resent the code. Annoying because I have a notification I can't clear out because I can't get into the FB app...
dterio Oct 25, 2010 at 3:57 pm
Download first then email key code was sent, mine was in spam folder (gMail)
aparkins30 Oct 25, 2010 at 5:43 pm
feel dumb, didn't expect it to hit the spam folder since I get all of their other emails fine but it was sent from a different email address. All set up now and loving it.
Hwycop Oct 25, 2010 at 4:18 pm
I had no issue with mine up here in the great white north. Key Code was received in less than two minutes. Installed fine on my 9700.
haymond Oct 25, 2010 at 4:24 pm

I've managed to grab a copy from Beta Zone, There might not be any beta space left for North American Members by the time you all get a chance to get on.

quattrojames Oct 25, 2010 at 4:46 pm
Both my requests for the PIN code were hidden away in there ;)
ka3yan#CB Oct 25, 2010 at 4:54 pm
I signed up. Didn't receive my keycode. Checked spam, not there. Went back to beta zone and it no longer shows that I'm in the FB 1.9.0 beta nor does it show that it is available...even though I can get to the FB 1.9.0 discussion.
juju705 Oct 25, 2010 at 4:56 pm
And it only took a few hours of refreshing and WTF'ing over the keycode.
Keycode was in my spam folder. :-P I FWD'd to another addy, but by then it had reconciled from me moving it to 'not spam' anyway.
So far... meh. Haven't really noticed much, good or bad.
thirtyfourdays Oct 25, 2010 at 5:03 pm
anybody else having a problem with notifications?
onlineaddy Oct 25, 2010 at 5:35 pm
I don't see the dedicated inbox. Are we talking about within the app or with OS integration?
swagg232 Oct 27, 2010 at 9:23 am
It shows within the app!
Deathcommand Oct 25, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Keycode worked but it was in spam.
also it is very fast.
even on my 8330m on 4.5
Yay RIM!
womby Oct 25, 2010 at 6:01 pm
glad they finally added PAGES on there. helps a lot when you're an admin trying to post. i've been posting through socialscope or through the mobile website. now if we could only have the ability to delete posts and upload pics as well to those pages. just asking for the common functionalities. hoping the official release will be more awesome plus places.
jasonvw Oct 25, 2010 at 6:20 pm
And sure enough it was in my spam folder in gmail. booo
wyldemf Oct 25, 2010 at 6:46 pm
I downloaded the app, but I can't find it anywhere on my BB? Anyone else?
jfs101 Oct 25, 2010 at 6:59 pm
My code was in the junk mail as well. I did't wait to long, the first thing I did after downloading was read the comments in here!...
surfsupwb Oct 25, 2010 at 7:56 pm
This app is the best facebook yet on the BB. LOVE IT :-)
bklady388 Oct 25, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Hopped on the pc early and took care of the registration. Downloaded it later to my 9700. Flawless download, fast app! Keycode was there within minutes. So far so good... I like to see the layout of teh friends/pages view. Nice work.
dalus87 Oct 25, 2010 at 10:10 pm
Lovely, downloaded FB 1.9 for my 8900 runnin OS 5.0.0.822.
now it wont start up :)
Load bar wont go 100%. stops at about 70%.
Anyone wanna help me FIX it? :(
dalus87 Oct 26, 2010 at 1:25 am
Reloaded my OS,Did a fresh install instead of upgrading and version 1.9 looks and works gr8.
I like that i can actually search for people and add them str8 from the device.
It still lags behind the other platforms but its a step in the right direction. :)
Judson50 Oct 25, 2010 at 10:20 pm
So far I like the "speed" its response.
And yes, my KeyCoad went into my spam filter.
sg4real76 Oct 25, 2010 at 10:53 pm
waiting on keycode
sg4real76 Oct 25, 2010 at 10:54 pm
what will the email say when i get the key code?
Average Joe Oct 26, 2010 at 12:27 am
Downloaded it about 8PM EST, fired it up, no problems. I think its a decent upgrade from 1.8, which I was running before this.
Ill take it, but I wish I could look at my SENT folder as well as my inbox...if they add that and FB chat, Id be just about all set with this app.
Alexd Oct 26, 2010 at 12:41 am
Missed this one.. not happy anyone getting the link on blackberry beta zone.
ev44 Oct 26, 2010 at 1:24 am
damn! to slow!
JGP92 Oct 26, 2010 at 2:50 am
I like it. Definately a nice upgrade from the old, old Facebook. Now that was a disaster.
yngpapii Oct 26, 2010 at 3:34 am
Im Guessing im too late.. .i logged in , but its not even listed under available programs for North America.. Im upset i didnt receive any invitation.. i have the new torch & would of loved to use the beta Facebook app...
jpr921 Oct 26, 2010 at 5:08 am
i downloaded the facebook app from beta zone checked the spam mail and still no key code cant use the old or new facebook now helppppppppppp
kidmac13 Oct 26, 2010 at 10:53 am
was lost for a moment, but realized i had to download it, got the code during the download process.
with over 2000 friends, the search is definitely the best "new addition" to it because it eliminates having to wait for every single friend to load. the dedicated inbox is great too.
could care less about "places"
just need chat and i can delete other apps (trillian, beejive, etc).
TimmyTwo2 Oct 26, 2010 at 11:15 am
I checked the Beta Zone and there was no program listing for Facebook 1.9, did they take it down? If not, can someone send me a link to the progam so I can sign up?
jfs101 Oct 26, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Man, this app is a battery HOG... I usualy get thru the day with about 35% juice left around 10:30pm. Right now I have 45% and its only noon :s
fredo96 Oct 26, 2010 at 12:47 pm
i think i must have just missed out! by the time i signed up to the beta zone, there was no mention of the facebook app anywhere, i have downloaded the app, but i have no code! does anyone know if any more codes will be coming out? and if not what the format of the code is?
swagg232 Oct 27, 2010 at 9:27 am
The key code is generated based around your device pin. Its about a paragraph long.
jfs101 Oct 26, 2010 at 3:25 pm
Check your junk mail, it's probably in there.
iLuLu Oct 26, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Once I got on SocialScope I just couldn't go back to anything else
swagg232 Oct 26, 2010 at 6:29 pm
i downloaded the new fb beta check it out on my page. lol

I like it, but I rally wish "Search Facebook" wasn't the default option when I hit the menu button.
Right now, I'm trying to choose between it and HootSuite. Unlike about 90% of CB (or at least it seems that way), I don't have and can't seem to get in on using SocialScope. AUGH!
MarkInTombstone Nov 3, 2010 at 11:34 am
So I go thru the trouble to download 1.9 from 1.8 and it looks the same except one has metallic mint green paint with posi-traction. Whats new with it? I cant see thru the dirty screen while I was making grits.
