Facebook 1.9

We've been wondering when Research In Motion was going to update Facebook for BlackBerry. I guess today, we now know. Facebook version 1.9 was just released to BlackBerry Beta Zone members and brings with it a lot of new changes and features:

  • Dedicated Inbox – View your Facebook messages in one separate inbox or within your BlackBerry messages inbox. The app pre-fetches 30 of your existing messages, and will then continue to sync messages on your BlackBerry smartphone with your Facebook inbox.
  • Facebook Search – Search for individuals and pages, making it easy to find mutual friends, add friends and “like” pages. For BlackBerry 6 users, Universal Search will pull Facebook results too!
  • Enhanced Friends List and Page List – View Friends profile photos and pages in list form
  • Redesigned Navigation Bar – View your own profile and click on the Search and Message icons with the new navigation bar

Keep in mind you must be a BlackBerry Beta Zone member in order to access the download and only a limited number of openings are available currently. So, you'll wanna head on over to the BlackBerry Beta Zone quickly.

While this is an improvement, SocialScope is still the winner, in my opinion, until Facebook for BlackBerry has chat on it.

  • Reply

kjwatkins Oct 25, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Agreed...the SocialScope facebook/twitter integration (especially with the recent update) is definitely the winner. & I use beejive for fb chat.

the rush is overflowing the servers

Understatement... I thought Slashdot banned the use of incompetent and inadequate webservers worldwide?

grabbed one and all thanks to crackberry.

Thanks to the crackberry team(most especially on twitter) for always keeping me in the loop

Still lacking Facebook Places? #fail-again-from-RIM

  • Reply

thebrownguy01 Oct 25, 2010 at 1:38 pm

why don't you just use foursquare and then post to facebook from within the app if you really need all your facebook friends to know where you are all the time?

  • Reply

mpscan Oct 25, 2010 at 1:46 pm

Because you can't tag friends with you, which is 1/2 the reason for Places in the first place. No chat. No places.

There are 2 billion people on the internet and 560 million Facebook accounts. Arguably, Facebook is the most popular application on any smartphone on any platform by sheer numbers.

RIM's product is so far behind other platforms it's laughable -- and they put out a beta without Chat or Places? Seriously?? I mean, are they intentionally trying to fail at gaining a part of the consumer market?

AjStone Oct 25, 2010 at 1:54 pm

According to the last few paragraphs of the BlackBerry Blog article: http://blogs.blackberry.com/2010/10/facebook-for-blackberry-v1-9-now-in-..., Facebook Places will arrive on the final release of 1.9.

In your Browser works for non-touch screen phones guys and places works on my Bold 9650 not sure if it worked on my Curve 8530 cause I never tried. But the touch.facebook.com site is way better and loads sometimes instantly.

  • Reply

cp3for3 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Yours actually work? I can only view people's places but I can't check into mine on my Tour. Interesting.

  • Reply

hunoosh Oct 25, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Not too thrilled. I guess the search is worth a lil upgrade but damn RIM what's up with the chat and video upload?!?!?!?!

  • Reply

qjedi7 Oct 25, 2010 at 1:37 pm

Yep! I got as far as the Software Agreement and then the site choked and now get nothing at all but an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error message....

  • Reply

qjedi7 Oct 25, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Well, ths site appears to be back up, and I can get all the way to the download link but get a message saying that there is no Blackberry device connected to the computer. Well, let's see the BB is charging and I see both the internal memory and SD card as two drives...so I would say that there is a BB connected to this computer....Guess the site is still not quite there yet....will just keep trying...

  • Reply

luqman24 Oct 25, 2010 at 2:43 pm

This ish doesn't work. I get an Internal Server Error message...

*Edit** Nvm got it to work. Its a good improvement but still missing some key features like video uploading and chat. Still will be using it though.

  • Reply

AjStone Oct 25, 2010 at 1:43 pm

I have no idea how or why, but right after I clicked the Accept button of the software license agreement, my BlackBerry threw up a white screen error and then rebooted...

It's so beta, it has issues even before you load it on your phone!

with thousands of users trying to grab 1 of a limited amount of copies it's to be expected.
I got the same issues a few times i.e "internal server error" and "invalid cod" but it eventually came through.
Keep trying

  • Reply

jasonvw Oct 25, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Site is definetely getting hammered. Oh well I can wait till I get home. Sure the rush will be over.

I'm Running 6.0 on my 9650. I keep getting a message after the download starts (after the "facebook module will be replaced" message that says " the downloaded module is incompatible with data already stored on the device". Do I need to delete my existing facebook app before this download, is this a 6.0 issue, or what?

bronko213 - the key code is sent once your download the actual Facebook program. The enrollment screen is a little misleading.

Right off the bat...the top bar looks cleaner. The facebook pages and your friend list not only load up faster, but they also look better as well. Better menu navigation. Nothing too major though.

And it only took a few hours of refreshing and WTF'ing over the keycode.

Keycode was in my spam folder. :-P I FWD'd to another addy, but by then it had reconciled from me moving it to 'not spam' anyway.

So far... meh. Haven't really noticed much, good or bad.

Reloaded my OS,Did a fresh install instead of upgrading and version 1.9 looks and works gr8.
I like that i can actually search for people and add them str8 from the device.
It still lags behind the other platforms but its a step in the right direction. :)

Downloaded it about 8PM EST, fired it up, no problems. I think its a decent upgrade from 1.8, which I was running before this.

Ill take it, but I wish I could look at my SENT folder as well as my inbox...if they add that and FB chat, Id be just about all set with this app.

was lost for a moment, but realized i had to download it, got the code during the download process.
with over 2000 friends, the search is definitely the best "new addition" to it because it eliminates having to wait for every single friend to load. the dedicated inbox is great too.

could care less about "places"
just need chat and i can delete other apps (trillian, beejive, etc).

Right now, I'm trying to choose between it and HootSuite. Unlike about 90% of CB (or at least it seems that way), I don't have and can't seem to get in on using SocialScope. AUGH!
