Facebook for PlayBook shown off in Adobe demo
It's no secret that there are really not too many "name brand" apps available in BlackBerry App World for the BlackBerry PlayBook. I was hoping to see a ton of native apps at launch including Twitter, Facebook and foursquare just to name a few. While we have really no idea when we'll start to see big name third party apps make their way to the PlayBook, an Adobe Flash demo posted to YouTube shows off what looks to be the native Facebook for PlayBook app. At around 2:55 in the video above, we get the first look at the application. It does look promising, however not knowing if/when it will actually show up doesn't get out hopes up just yet.

Does she hook up the playbook with a wireless hdmi connector?
SharpieFiend Apr 19, 2011 at 2:01 pm
It could be a DLNA connection - RIM said they are going to support that.
Prey521 Apr 19, 2011 at 5:17 pm
No, it was wired, if you look closely, you can see the wire looping underneath the desk.

I want Angry Birds!

Am I missing something? Why would you need an app for Facebook when you can just go to the site?
gregorylkelly Apr 19, 2011 at 2:39 pm
notifications.
JtotheV Apr 19, 2011 at 3:29 pm
+1 on jsut going to the site. This this gives you full web.
kidcalis Apr 19, 2011 at 2:24 pm
The idea of Playbook is to bring the full internet to you and not the other way around...leave that to APPLE.....The idea of having apps will die very quickly....because finally thanks to RIM,you would be able to use the internet...the way it is intended, WITHOUT APPS!!!!! You will not actually use apps for playbook....u wont need it!
codemaker Apr 19, 2011 at 3:13 pm
We aren't quite there yet. Web applications can't yet bring the level of integration (notifications, device specific context stuff) and polish that a native app can.
People seem not to realize that a blackberry smartphone brings a far more integrated experience than a desktop pc, even with access to the "full internet". You probably can't just right click on an entry in your RSS reader or podcast downloader and tweet, facebook, im, or email it to a friend on your desktop PC. You can do this on your blackberry.
For one, I am happy to see a move away from the web as an application delivery platform to native/device based applications. I hope this trend extends to the PC.

screw that.
jellis14 Apr 20, 2011 at 8:22 am
Then why are they making apps? Sounds like you are creating excuses for a Playbook with no APP's yet? But when they arrive - you will Jump on the other side? Or your basic argument about not needed apps will die, since the Playbook is going to Create APP's for everything, following Ipads Lead!!!

I have a Playbook and I love it, but I see at this and think, "Oh, look all the things my Playbook can do, but can't yet." Kind of disappointing to be honest.
alainas Apr 19, 2011 at 2:42 pm
you'd think the menu will appear by swiping down and not clicking a button i just hope we do not end up with 10 different ways of accessing things
codemaker Apr 19, 2011 at 3:15 pm
It might do both, but I agree with you there. I hope for a certain level of consistency throughout various applications. Especially 1st and 2nd party apps.

The Playbook looks so good. People should go out and try it instead of jumping into stupid conclusions based on reviewers that are so biased and want RIM to fail. The only thing that the Ipad has is more applications (many of those applications are useless. I wonder why they get approved) but RIM is all about quality not quantity.
I wish I could get a Playbook but no money :p
Kiddo2050 Apr 19, 2011 at 3:14 pm
RIM was smart on QNX, TAT and add to that Adobe. Adobe has incentive to work hard to prove apple and Steve Jobs wrong. They are going to develop very good content for the Playbook.
Another good move RIM!

This is useless without a dedicated 3G connection. How will I know of my notifications if I'm on the device and it isn't tethered? Lame.
tdan198 Apr 19, 2011 at 3:52 pm
Is your phone faulty? Why would you want to pay for data on your phone and on you tablet when you can save money by sharing the data? There's gonna be a 3g version too though so you can pay for extra data when it's released if you want to. I'm pretty sure there'll be a facebook app with notifications sometime soon. The playbook isn't even up to a day old. Apps will come.
chi-town311 Apr 19, 2011 at 3:54 pm
Come on man. They sell all sorts of tablets without a cellular connection. It isn't useless. It is just limited to wifi. Thankfully 4G versions will be out soon and for the time being we can bridge and use our BB phone. That is better connectivity than what Apple offers on their wifi only models.

Hi @CrackBerryDoctor,
Douglas from RIM here. To clarify, our current Wi-Fi PlayBook does pair with any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone as a modem to access high-speed wireless networks(specific capabilities are dependent on individual wireless carriers). Of course, you can also tap into Wi-Fi hotspots wherever you are – at the office, at home, in the coffee shop, or the airport – and stay connected.
We’ve also announced that three additional 4G PlayBook tablets will make their debut this year:
- BlackBerry 4G PlayBook with Wi-Fi + WiMax: this summer via Sprint
- BlackBerry 4G PlayBook with Wi-Fi + LTE: second half of 2011
- BlackBerry 4G PlayBook with Wi-Fi + HSPA+: second half of 2011
Cheers,
Douglas, RIM Social Media Team

Mr. Douglas, when will the Playbook be available in SE Asian countries especially in Thailand?
Snick Snack Apr 20, 2011 at 1:14 am
So you must like paying your cell carrier lots of money if you go to a dedicated 3G connection... just saying. I can tether mine and BB bridge works great on getting me on the net if I'm not near wi-fi, much like tethering would without a BB.
BigPlayChad8 Apr 19, 2011 at 3:49 pm
The Playbook is awesome.

I concur! I want one!

I am a avid Blackberry lover - I have had them for a long time, and really really wanted to love the Playbook. I purchased one from Staples yesterday - thinking that I would have a problem getting them. Not at all....
The first one sold was to me - and that was at 10am - and they opened at 8am? I asked if they were expecting any rush - they thought so - but it seem to be a huge dissappoitment?
I brought it home, and played with it... But nothing impressed me? Lot of Lag time - and the system itself has no real apps that add any value to me? I was thinking at least a Facebook app - maybe Citrix for work? Anything? Nope? Sorry - But I am taking it back today.
I really wanted to love this.... but there is not much to love? :( Sorry Blackberry Fans....
