Facebook for BlackBerry

Facebook 2.0 has been floating along in the BlackBerry Beta Zone for quite a while now, but it looks like it's just about ready for prime time. As seen in this teaser status posted on Facebook, RIM will be releasing the latest version to the public in BlackBerry App World tomorrow. Major updates of the new version include:

  • Enhanced Notifications - Get Notified of ‘Likes' We've made several improvements to notifications; the first is that you'll be now be notified of polled items (that is, notifications that aren't delivered through BlackBerry® push technology), such as ‘Likes' and Event Wall posts. The notification will even tell you who and what was ‘Liked', so you'll never miss a beat in your social life. By default, polled notifications will be set to a one-hour frequency but you can check as often as you like by selecting Refresh from the Menu.
  • Cross-Channel Messaging - Share Facebook Content across BlackBerry Messaging Applications
  • Enhanced Integration with BlackBerry Native Apps - Building on enhanced integration with native BlackBerry smartphone apps, which was introduced with the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v2.0 beta refresh, Facebook v2.0 now includes additional messaging options from the ‘More' button within a Profile and from the Friends list.
  • In-App Error Reporting - If you haven't already downloaded the BlackBerry Feedback Tool from BlackBerry App World, you can install it through the Menu in the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app. The BlackBerry Feedback Tool can be used to send feedback on BlackBerry smartphone features, functions and applications at any time and is currently available in English only.
  • Touch Toolbar - BlackBerry smartphone users with a touch screen device will now have Compose, Reply and Delete icons located along the bottom of the device screen in the Facebook Inbox for quick and easy access to these popular features.

This release brings some welcome changes and those of you that haven't had a chance to check out version 2.0 yet should be very happy with the updates. Check back tomorrow for more on the official release!

Been using in Beta Zone for a while. It's really nice. No Video uploads yet, and the news feed button doesn't switchto a status button, so you have to go into the menu to change that, but otherwise, love it.

  • Reply

RevyRah Jul 25, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Yeah, at the no video upload is a bummer. Also if someone sends you a video in a message (not your wall), it won't show the video. You can, however, log in directly through the browser and view it there...which makes no sense. If it can be done in the web browser, it should be done more conveniently in the app. Just my humble opinion.

Over all, the app is great. The old FB app can't even compare in any way shape or form.

  • Reply

JasW Jul 25, 2011 at 4:39 pm

RIM's reps in Beta Zone said it was up for "future consideration," whatever that means. In my book, no video upload is a major shortcoming in the app. Chat may be a nice thing, but most people use FB to (1) post, (2) u/l photos, and (3) u/l videos.

  • Reply

RevyRah Jul 25, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Very true. Especially considering the fact that the rumors have BBM integration with the social sites too. It should handle the core aspects of facebook- including the new Skype video ...but I guess that has to wait for PlayBook and future phones with a front cam.

I know they want to get as many PlayBooks sold as possible and that is most likely the reason why they haven't added the front facer on the phones yet. more reason to get the PB.

I love FB 2.0 for BB. It works great! And before anyone even says anything remotely negative, FB 2.0 for BlackBerry is much, MUCH better than FB for iPhone or FB for Android.

FB 2.0 has worked fne for me, uploading photos are extremely fast, everything is so much better. Which BB do you have?

  • Reply

Will this be the same version as the latest Beta or will those of us that have been using the latest Beta be fine and not need to update?

  • Reply

jvictor77 Jul 25, 2011 at 4:38 pm

I have the same question....anyone?

  • Reply

crigga84 Jul 25, 2011 at 4:56 pm

I'm sure it will be a later version with some fixes. Perhaps 2.0.0.30 or something.

  • Reply

tnhrocks Jul 25, 2011 at 4:32 pm

Hopefully they fixed the notifications issue, other than that it's good!

  • Reply

jamesuc Jul 25, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Agreed. It is a nice app, but the notification issue was a pain. Guess we'll find out soon!

Yep, chat is included and it has a similar ui to bbm.

  • Reply

I hope (probably in vain) that the release is compatible with OS 4.5.

  • Reply

Aalejandro Jul 25, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Nope it won't work on OS 4.5 .... They had originally stated for OS 4.6 and higher but it seems they might have scrapped it for 4.6 as well ... As they only allowed people with OS 5and higher to Beta Test

  • Reply

lewisc1979 Jul 25, 2011 at 9:44 pm

Yeah, I remember that during the beta testing. However, I had a 9650 with OS 6 when it was in beta testing. I lost that phone and had to reactivate my 8330m, which is stuck on OS 4.5. I guess I'm just dreaming.

  • Reply

miamimanu86 Jul 25, 2011 at 4:50 pm

I'm worried because in the lastest beta version the notifications for comments doesn't make any sounds. If this hasn't been fixed, it will be a major disaster.

  • Reply

BBFTW88 Jul 25, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Have been using the 2.0 Beta's from the start and it's very good. Notifications are spot on, although the 'likes' etc they say you should be notified of now don't seem to work for me.

  • Reply

crigga84 Jul 25, 2011 at 4:58 pm

I'm sure it won't be the same version as the beta version (2.0.0.29) because they know about the bugs due to negative feedback. When they released Twitter from the beta zone, it jumped up a version to 2.0.0.16 so I'm sure this version will jump too and be an improvement.

Dave79 Jul 25, 2011 at 5:00 pm

When will we be able to view Event Walls, post on Event Walls, view attendees and create Events from within the app?

  • Reply

cellinator Jul 25, 2011 at 5:05 pm

What about "Groups"? I have a few private groups I'm a part of and cannot ready or access them with the current app. I have to actually log in on the webpage (which is cumborsome) to view them. I know the iPhone app has this, what about 2.0 for BB?

  • Reply

rexknapps Jul 25, 2011 at 5:16 pm

I agree with that. Groups should be accessable in the app too.

  • Reply

rexknapps Jul 25, 2011 at 5:06 pm

What about viewing events in the app? Or does that still have to happen in the browser?

I just checked the App World, Facebook 2.0.0.29 is already there. I don't know if they have fixed any of the latest bugs or not. I'm not sure if a newer version will be posted there or not, tomorrow.

  • Reply

organized_mayhem Jul 25, 2011 at 11:44 pm

Don't know what app world you are looking at but .29 is NOT already there. It may say your installed version is .29. But it still showing the current app world version is 1.9.0.28.

  • Reply

joeberrymomma Jul 26, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Copy that. If it were an upgrade you would see the upgrade button. If not, you see your version installed at the top and buttons for review, recommend, screenshot. Scroll to the bottom and you will see the version that App world has which as of typing this email is not 2.0.xx.

Seeing as how the recent Beta versions did I'd hope the full release does as well. I deleted the beta in anticipation of the new release but it hasn't been pushed to my phone yet.

  • Reply

xtremez Jul 25, 2011 at 8:52 pm

I'm guessing this should be similar to the one from Beta Zone? Which also means no tagging on status , and no groups too?

  • Reply

cellinator Jul 25, 2011 at 9:39 pm

No groups = fail... How can you improve on an app without including this basic item? Jeez...

  • Reply

danatnr Jul 25, 2011 at 8:55 pm

I really hope Build 29 isn't the release build. I preferred build 19, which didn't slow my Curve 8520 to a crawl. Every time I would go to Facebook from the messages screen, or even if I marked Facebook messages as read, I would be waiting seconds for control to come back to me. I hope they have this fixed on release. I was a good boy and filled out the survey a while back. :)

I been having this Facebook for quite a while now from the beat zone and I hope they fixed the facebook options cut-off!

2.0 is awesome! Much, much better, I never have to go to the mobile site anymore to check everything. I only use the app, and its so much faster and when you upload pix its like a flash, bam its uploaded. You all will absolutely love it!!!!! <3

  • Reply

Been using facebook 2.0 for months in beta and personally have found no issues at all with it... Looking forward to the official version as I couldn't install the latest beta version with bbm integration, and notification on "likes" looks like I will be checking back here for this all day.. Ohwell work has always come 2nd to my bb

I swore I would never do drugs or become addicted to anything.... Thanks RIM for making me a liar, I can't put this bitch down lol

  • Reply

meganVee Jul 26, 2011 at 3:12 am

I would love for them to include groups and events. It is a pain to go to the mobile site to view those. Video upload would also be nice. If chat is included it will be nice and cut down on the extra app required at the moment. Cannot wait to check it out.

Been using this for a while now and I like it quite a bit. Only one major complaint... it sync'd ALL of my phone contacts with my yahoo email contacts without any permission! I am a sales rep and have over 400 contacts in my phone, I did not want them all in my email contacts. I think this feature can be de-selected during set up, see "blackberry contacts application" when setting up "options", guess I just didn't realize what it was going to do? Oh well?

If you have the beta you are doing well. The official is likely to be icing on the cake in terms of addressing miner bugs. 2.0 has been a long time coming. Today, tomorrow, no matter, it's coming! :) Yes groups would be nice and video upload, I suppose. By no means is this a #FAIL like some are saying. 2.0 has a lot to offer and as others have said it is superior in many ways to other platforms.
