Facebook for BlackBerry

I remember way back when everyone was going crazy about the Facebook app. The rumor of highly anticipated updates kept us on edge for weeks. Well today RIM has finally released an update for Facebook for BlackBerry to bring things up to speed a bit. The new app has some overhauled features that make it a bit more manageable. New features include support for Facebook Places, a dedicated inbox, Facebook search, navigation updates, friends list page and more. You can grab the new version now from BlackBerry App World.

Note: The latest version isn't showing on the web for everyone, so check App World from your device for the update.

WOW how is it great, it's sooo laggy compared to the v 1.9.0.12 BETA, too bad i dont have the beta version anymore. This new one is sooo laggy for some reason and the effects are bad compared to the beta...

the native facebook chat app for blackberry is on sale on Blackberry Appworld for $.99. I bought it today and it works really well.

I see two third party apps for 3.99 and 4.99. Can you find it on app world web site and send a link? Or give out the full name in app world

Its called chat for facebook. What's your email or pin so I can recommend it to you? I have also used Meebo. That's free, but its a tad bit slow.

Appworld is still showing me 1.8 I wonder if its because I have the 1.9 BETA loaded?

  • Reply

rpsilva1995 Nov 10, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I was also beta testing the new FB and I had to DL it as if it was new but it let me do it. After I did the alt-rst.

  • Reply

sk8er_tor Nov 10, 2010 at 12:27 pm

On a computer, go to http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/680?IID=IBBAPP21109 and click on Download. Sign in using your BlackBerry ID and you will get a notification on your BB screen that an update is available from App World. Or you can download right from there.

  • Reply

minimeister Nov 16, 2010 at 9:54 pm

stick with 1.8 if you can. the new version is the worst yet. No significant improvements. buggy install and will not delete messages from your inbox.

I have the 1.9 beta. Its not showing the new version in india on app world vodafone even after ALT+RSTR

  • Reply

jgfan1972 Nov 10, 2010 at 9:45 am

FYI If you install via the App Wold Website it doesn't prompt that a reboot is needed..

  • Reply

visualpurple Nov 10, 2010 at 9:00 am

I tested the beta of v1.9 and had to revert to 1.8 because of some 'features' that drove me nuts. For example, in 1.9, if you receive a FB notification in your Messages app and delete it just to clear the notification, it will also delete from the actual facebook website. This is really annoying when you want to receive the notifications in the Messages app but be able to clear them out without actually deleting them on the website.

  • Reply

J4m3z420 Nov 10, 2010 at 9:18 am

I agree with some new features being completely stupid. Besides the notification one you mentioned, it will integrate every message you have received into your BB messages. When you delete a message from the BB message it will also delete from Facebook. Stupid. You can turn it off but then you will no longer receive any Facebook notifications in you BB messages folder.

  • Reply

Gloglo Nov 11, 2010 at 5:55 am

Help, how can I get 1.8 back.

  • Reply

Prafeston Nov 11, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I was really liking some of the new features and then I see it updated my Messages on my BB and I went to clear all the old Messages and it turns out I deleted them off Facebook too! Why would they make this integration work like this...so stupid. I don't want all the old messages sitting in my BB Message folder, but if I clear them they are gone from FB. Change it back please!!

Someone show me how to get the old version back. I can't stand this!

What @The Adventist says is same for me, from my Rogers Bold 9700/OS 6, click on link, takes me right to the 1.9.0.20, but if I go try searching within AppWorld it takes me to the old 1.8.

When checking in my PC browser (Firefox), it showed the old version, which I thought I'd d/l as a backup in case I wanted to revert. But I was moving around pages, and suddenly it showed new FB version in App World. Then old again. So web site from PC is a little off kilter, as mentioned in article. OTA only showed new version for me. I'm on VZW, fwiw.

This worked for me as well. It closed app world, I went back in and it refreshed my installed apps. Update then showed up. I had to do this even after deleting the beta, installing the 1.8 version that shoed up for me in appworld.

Not sure why, but App World seems to have some sort of rollout delay; I had problemd with WeatherEye on my device (9700/OS6) and they updated to a new version yesterday...that my friend saw on App World, yet I didn't, until later in the day, for some reason.

And we're both on the same provider (Rogers), same phone model and OS.

So, if it doesn't show up for you right away, give it time. Incidentally I see the new Facebook version and am currently installing.

blackhorse2800 Nov 10, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Mine wasn't showing up either. But when I did alt+RST the app world closed down and I ran it again and the upgrade was there. Was waiting for the places option, so I'm loving the new updated facebook :D

Got to love fake post. or when they release something just to remove it immediately. next time don't post it unless you know its going to stay up or its legit?

  • Reply

remlle Nov 10, 2010 at 9:27 am

Wow your a negative person. sometimes the updates don't show right away for everyone. mainly to cut down on server loads. If you try opening up app world and then click and hold ALT then type RSTR it will make it appear or at least did for me. It was weird wife's Style showed it right away. my torch i had to do the above.

  • Reply

fayek Nov 10, 2010 at 10:10 am

FYI Mr negativity... when i saw this post, i opened app world, searched for facebook, found the update instantly and loaded it. so it's just your bad luck you cant get it. not the site's fault.

They've added FB Places and still haven't fixed the Messages scrolling. Its not as smooth as the other tabs unfortunately. But its still heading the right direction (y)

  • Reply

FatSajak Nov 10, 2010 at 9:25 am

I did the alt + R,S,T trick and it showed up fine. I had the 1.9 beta and the first difference that popped out is they added "places" to this release. As one of the few it seems that doesn't care about having chat, I'm liking this version.

What a disappointment. I may go back to 1.9.0.12beta. The most glaring disappointment is the near-perfect scrolling experience of the beta has been replaced with the classic crappy stutter-scrolling of all the previous official releases. Major FAIL on RIM's part. I don't plan on using Places, so this scrolling issue is gonna be a deal breaker...

I believe it is not available for the combo of OS6 and Verizon. If I use the web on my computer, login to my blackberry account (appworld.blackberry.com, click on the browse for apps link, then at the top there will be a sign in link) and view the facebook entry, on the right side it says "this application is not available for your device" and lists my settings as Verizon and OS 6.0.0. My guess is that Blackberry has device and/or carrier specific version of the app, and since Verizon does not have an official OS6 device yet, it does not recognize that combination when looking for a version to download.

if your bb is not showing the upgrade in app world simply soft reset youre device. ALT+Right Cap+DEL and then you should see the upgrade in the app world after it boots. if not simply search for facebook and istall it then it will ask you if you want to replace the version with a new one.

Showed right up on my Bold 9700 with OS 6. Installed and I like it. I am glad "Places" has been added, now I can be cool like the Facebook for iPhone people lol. A lot of people are not happy that chat has not been added, which is not a big deal for me because I rarely have a need to use it anyway. But, I have found that with the new browser on OS 6 if you go to the actual website (www.facebook.com/home.php) you can use the facebook chat. Note: you have to include the home.php or it will direct you to the mobile site which doesn't work.

I'm in the same boat. When I downloaded Facebook 1.9.0.12, it worked in the Social Feeds, but 1.9.0.20 does not. In fact, when I get a notification of a FB message and go up to the notification tray, the message does not appear in the drop-down. I wonder if the AppWorld is forcing us to use a compatible version with 5.0.0.979 instead of 6.0.0.344. Maybe once it's available from blackberry.com/facebook it'll work better. In the meantime, I may be forced to go back to 1.9.0.12. This is extremely disappointing if this is supposed to be a final release that they took a step backward.

Solution for STORM Users

To clear the application cache:

1. Open App World

2. Go to My World

3.Hold the num-lock ("!?123") button so it locks and then hit "34("

4. If your BB locks after issuing the cache clear, perform a battery pull reboot

AND BAM! you is on that realness 1.9.20!! CHYEA!

1) Go into Appworld on your phone
2) HOLD the "alt" key while pressing in succession: "R" "S" "T"
3) This should have kicked you out of Appworld to your menu screen
4) Go back into Appworld, then into "MyWorld" re-enter you BB id info
5) That should be it, your app cache should've cleared and once you scroll down to Facebook and select it, you should see the upgrade.

Enjoy.

I just downloaded the new version of FB and it is sweet! When I click on the "places" icon, I get a message that says "Your location is temporarily not available." I went to my account settings and everything looks good there. Also, while in "places" on my phone, I clicked on options which brings me to a screen to run setup wizard. There is also a place to select "share my location" with Facebook. I am unable to put a check in that box. Is this because this version is so new that there are some things to be worked out? Or am I missing something altogether? Any ideas?

Thanks!

I upgraded to FB 1.9.0.20 as soon as it was BBM'd to me. I'm on a 9700 OS6 AT&T North America. As soon as the download, install, and reboot were completed...FB no longer showed up in Social Feeds.
I can't find any information as to why this occured. I rebooted, battery pulled and 'shut down' FB and Social Feeds and ran the Setup Wizard. Nothing worked. I have just now downgraded back to FB 1.8.0.49 and once everything was done, FB was in Social Feeds.
I have no idea why the updated version does not show up in Social Feeds. I've just started using FB again and haven't even tried Places, so downgrading was no big deal for me. I'm guessing we will have to wait for this glitch to be fixed before the 9700 OS6'ers can upgrade.

...I was fortunate that App World did not show the 1.9 update yet. So I just installed FB 1.8 again and clicked yes to replace.
About 15 minutes later, App World notified me that FB had an update. So I DL it, same thing happened and no more Social Feeds. Yes, I'm a dumbarse. Now I'm going to have to hunt for another downgrade or not use SF.

  • Reply

breakmedown Nov 10, 2010 at 1:06 pm

I checked, and App World does have the upgrade, but since I don't particularily like using App World, I'll just wait for it to show up through the Facebook App itself. That way if there are any bugs, those can be worked out. I use the mobile site about 60% of the time anyway.

I did this too. There were some hiccups with AppWorld/Facebook, but after a couple of reboots latest FB is installed and Social Feeds working.

A nice side effect was that now my Universal Search now utilizes Google, which was previously missing (from options there was no Default Search or engines to select). Not sure why/how this fixed, but I'm happy it did!

I went to the FB site on PC and went to app settings and noticed the iGoogle was now an app that I allowed access to. I think that this FB for blackberry app uses some sort of Google code or service, Universal Search also searches facebook too.

Im not noticing any scrolling problems, or any other problems so far.

And although I like the keyboard shortcuts, Id rather have a "My profile" icon than the Places icon in the icon row at the top...Im gonna have to get used to hitting "W" to go to my wall...

Now if they would just add chat and a sent box for messages, Id be all set.

I can't find this anywhere. When I open Facebook and check for update it says an update is available but takes me to 1.8.0.49. When I use the link above to app-world from a computer it says that my device (9550) is not supported, yet it is listed as being supported. It even says when I get to the page "The item no longer has a free version of the item available or requires an upgrade."
I even used the bar-code on the webpage, but it still takes me to 1.8. Yet early today my wife was able to get it on her 9550. I'm at a loss here. I'll guess I have to wait 6 months before app-world shows a update! lol

This update is not what I expected. I did participate in the beta and expressed concerns there - apparently to no avail. Old FB messages turned up in my message notification list. While that's not a dealbreaker, the fact that deleting them from the message stream deleted the messages from my FB inbox is - FAIL. Even after turning off FB notifications, several old messages still show and cannot be deleted from my message stream. Since I'm not a fan of letting the entire world know my location, adding Places didn't do anything for me. The interface is practically the same, and RIM is STILL not listening to what the users ask for - a more robust application. FB 1.9 is a FAIL for this user (Curve 8900 on OS 5.0.0.900).

I dont know what is happening with this app!! I can send photos from my blackberry to the facebook app alright? but they upload in the same carpet (Mobile Upload)
With the previous version, it used to upload a picture taken with my blackberry curve 9300 and it would upload it for example 1 minute ago, and the other pic if taken 10 minutes later, the facebook app would uploaded and it will show 10 minutes ago

But with this facebook 1.9 If I took a pic 1 hour ago, it will upload it 1 hour ago, but all the pictures taken after the first pic, even if I have taken them after 25 minutes, or 1 hour or more, the app will still upload it to facebook but all the pictures appear in the same carpet that says 1 hour ago, that suck

I like when I take a pic and then appear 5 minutes ago
and the next one I took and appear 10 minutes ago
and etc...
but that doesnt seem to work in this version 1.9 please could someone help me

Just to be clear:
In facebook Feeds:
If I write my status, every status will appear separetely (with each time detailed specifically 1 hour ago, 25 minutes ago, etc)
The same happens if I post you tube videos
what when its about photo any pic sit upload all the pics in the Carpet that says Mobile.
For example if I upload5 photos today
The first one will appear in feeds and my profile wall it will appear with the time specifically taken (for example 10 minutes)
but the other four pics I wont see them published on Feeds neither on my profile wall
they will appear agrupated, associated in the same group of Mobile uploads

With the previous version each pic upload used to appear on Feeds, with their time specify and also on wall, at least I will take the five pictures and I will see them published on my wall separately and when the day finished I will see them associated in one carpet which is Mobile Upload, I will see that on my wall

What it really bothers me of facebook 1.9 is that if I take 5 pics, I will have to go to my profile wall and refresh and refresh and I will never see publish all the pics in News feeds and for my Wall I will have to look for the Mobile Upload carpet of the day taken and refresh, its not as before that if I take a pic I will upload it and see it published in the feed as in the wall too, and that used to occur with each particular photo

Is anyone else not receiving updates any longer? Since I downloaded 1.9, I haven't received a single FB update. But I go onto the PC, and there's a bunch. Now I've tried deleting the app, changing the option back and forth about receiving updates, logging and out, etc. This is everything I basically tried when the 1.8 update came out and I had the same issue for about 2 months. I really don't want this to be a repeat. This is truly the last straw for me and Blackberry.

I was deleting my messages (SMS, MMS, Emails) and since Ive upgraded to the new facebook it will not delete my notifications from the message screen. I did a delete prior and just my facebook notifications stayed in my inbox. I uninstalled facebook and they were gone but as soon as I redownloaded the app the messages where put right back on my phone!

Any suggestions? Anyone else having this problem?

I used the 1.9 BETA version of the app and was sooo aggravated about the FB notifications, that I turned on Email notifications and that was great for cluttering my inbox. I'm glad I downgraded when 1.8 was still in APP WORLD, cause I love the notifications. Other than the notification issue...I thought it was a really good upgrade. I'm sticking to 1.8 for now.

(Edited because the problem was solved.)

I upgraded on my phone recently (still using a Curve 8330 with a 5.0 OS) and seem to have very few problems.

However, I noticed that there was no more audible sounds when I get alerts. I missed having the alert sound to tell me that somebody replied to a post of mine in Facebook. I even went into the edit ringtones and alerts menu on my BB itself and nothing for Facebook is there anymore.

I had rebooted the device after installing it and nothing was there. I did a double-soft reboot (after reading of it in this thread), and the audible alerts came back.

Very weird indeed.
