Facebook 1.8.0.49 now available in BlackBerry App World

Facebook 1.0.8.49

Well that didn't take long. Earlier today we saw Facebook version 1.8.0.30 available for some in the Beta Zone, and then it got pulled just like that. Nothing is lost as now version 1.8.0.49 is available for download from BlackBerry App World. The new version is showing for some and not for others (it may be device specific?) so we're not totally sure what's up, but give it a go and let us know in the comments if its working for you. Thanks Khalil!

A bit faster.. I used to experience a freeze when scrolling through the feed & also took FOREVER to update my friend's list when sending a message. So that seems fixed !

JustJoey Aug 18, 2010 at 8:41 pm

I had these same issues on my 9550, and especially hated the friend list refresh. Just that improvement has me rating it a full star and a half better.

Mine got a lot faster!
It is now as fast on EDGE as on my WiFi, the first day I was actually wondering if I had my WiFi on, but it was not the case. Thanks!

I just wanted everyone to know that I just got the new Facebook 1.8.0.49 from App World. After downloading Slacker Radio on my BB, I rebooted my phone. When it came back up I notice my icons were all messed up, That's when I realized my Facebook app was gone. I looked in all my folder and still did not find it, so I decided to just go and redownload it. When I found it, it said v. 1.8.0.49!!! Whooo hooo!!!

  • Reply

isteal Aug 18, 2010 at 10:58 pm

What is so much better on other devices? I have used the iphone/ipod touch version and actually prefer the way the BlackBerry version is laid out. I have no experience with the Android version. Facebook 1.8 for BlackBerry does basically everything I need except $aybe video uploads... I get frustrated when people just say... "This is crap" but don't support their argument at all.

  • Reply

chirmer#CB Aug 19, 2010 at 11:21 am

Let's see: The iPhone app is faster, easier to use, has more customization options, you can make shortcuts to your friend's profiles that you visit most often, you can use facebook chat, the friends list tells you if a person has a phone number on their account, and overall, you can access the entirety of facebook through the app.

The BlackBerry app is TERRIBLE. It has only a select few options for things to do, and no facebook chat. Nothing loads, I can never find my friends in my contact list within a reasonable amount of time to tag them in photos I'm uploading, and now I installed this update and it's asking me for a keycode, so I can't even use the stupid thing! Aughhhh :(

  • Reply

Wapiti Sep 1, 2010 at 9:48 pm

Really? Better? I can support any argument I lay... The BB app is pretty awful.

For starters - Ok, sure, they now load friend lists faster. But when you reply to a friends wall post via the phone, it is a WALL-TO-WALL post -- WHY?? Most people wish to Comment on the post rather than have your reply show up like a orphaned wall post on your friend's wall.

Uploading pictures rarely works by simply posting to Facebook - usually errors out. Emailing it is not a user friendly option - its called a cludgy work around.

Always defaulting to News Feed - with no way of changing it to what most people would prefer (Status Updates).

I'm now trying to refresh my Status Updates and its telling me that there are no status feeds, but the News Feeds update just fine.

You bet, its a 'great' application.

sigh...

Just installed this on my Storm 9530. Last version I was running was a 1.7-something. Anyways, so far this 1.8 thing is running pretty well so far. It's faster and finally shows links and other updates properly in the main feed as well as the notifications section. It also auto-loads the next set of updates on the news feed page when you scroll the the bottom on the page. Nice so far.

EDIT: New notifications aren't opening. No matter how many times I try or wait, I keep getting an error saying "Facebook server unable to retrieve the post at this time".

  • Reply

Wizetux Aug 18, 2010 at 8:16 pm

As far as I know, none of the phone/mobile versions of Facebook have chat. Why would you think that BlackBerry would get it?

The chat client is so flash based that I bet the only phones that could even handle it would be jail-broken iPhones or the newest Android (because you can install flash on them), and they would only get it if running the actual web version the site same way that you do on your computer.

  • Reply

codemaker Aug 18, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Facebook's chat is xmpp based. Xmpp is the same protocol that gtalk uses, so it is really just a matter of rim deciding to implement it. In fact, I think you can use facebook chat on a blackberry using beejive; don't quote me on that though.

  • Reply

Boogies_Blackberry Aug 19, 2010 at 9:24 am

Let's face it... burn it! That's why I'm going to Android.

Oh... don't start spitting now... yes I can buy another blackberry with OS5 in fact I looked at the bold 9600 nice phone, much faster screen real estate sucks.

I don't know how many are still using OS4.5 but I seem to see frequent comments about 4.5 so I guess they just can't have all the goodies like everybody else has.

Facebook for BB 4.5 FBv1.7 is broken, I can't even post photos (and there is a workaround, but its stupid).

The news feed/status load older messages as you scroll down so the More... button doesn't exist anymore, now also in Options gives you the feature of updating in the background with intervals of 30, 1, 2 3 and 4 hrs. I noticed the Friend List (which every time you opened that it had to load for several minutes also in Wall Post and Messages) has been fixed. Great app so far!

While it's not perfect, 1.8 is worlds better than 1.7 IMO. I had the 1.8beta for like 3 days on my tour, then i got my 9650 and had to go back to 1.7... Finally! It's so much smoother and loads like it should!

I downloaded this FB update as soon as I received the news. Prior to this I had the leaked 1.8 beta version on my BlackBerry. I haven't noticed any differences between the two. Either way, both versions work very well on my 9700--much better than 1.7 ever was. Friend's list and viewing picture profiles load quickly.

Facebooking on my BlackBerry is a far more pleasant experience.

Well since this is one of my most heavily used app, I keep it on my home screen row, however it seems the icon is no longer transparent when not highlighted. Is this happening for anyone else?

Other than that, this version is MUCh faster than 1.7. Everything seems so much quicker. The scrolling and loading of feed and pics are instant now.

I kept getting 1.7 in App World. Tried the ALT R-S-T mentioned earlier (thanks MG386!!), and it showed the new version. This is nice. The Friends refreshed so much faster, and the News Feeds shows alot more than the 1.7 version. I was looking at posts that were three hours old before it had to load more feeds. There must be a different version for older phones. My version is .48, not .49.

I can scroll through the upper icons a lot faster and the friend list refresh was almost instantaneous and I had deleted 1.7 long time ago.

There a few more options and they allow a bit more control on how the app behaves.

I've already noticed one bug. I've set the "Check for new Feeds" to never and it's still updating. Sigh.

Funny, I thought there would be an interface update. I didn't participate in the beta, but I assumed it was going to look more like the LinkdIn BB app.

+1 on the flicker-like scrolling on the 9700, similar to Twitter and App World 2. Also, when watching photos, clicking the trackpad brings a menu with Like, Add comments and View comments as options. And there is a new blue band on top of photos that show the number of comments and "likes" it has received.

  • Reply

MADBRADNYC Aug 19, 2010 at 1:38 am

These are mirrored and informational files that are loaded on the sdcard NOT in the device memory. This is how it "remembers" what you have installed, and commands like Alt-RST access these to function. Your installed version will show the same file size as anyone else. If you look in your sdcard folders under BlackBerry, you will see an Appworld folder which contains your PIN and all of the files of apps you ever downloaded.

mynetdude Aug 18, 2010 at 10:35 pm

I have noticed some apps only get updated through appworld rather than through the dev's websites (altho more are going the direct route instead).

large files? I hadn't noticed, but 1.8 still doesn't work on 4.5 (as noticed 4.6 doesn't work either).

I am getting my Android Friday or Monday.... this will be a long lost cause.

  • Reply

mookish Aug 18, 2010 at 10:35 pm

The notifications are different now, more generic, it doesn't say "John posted something on your wall" or "john commented on your photo" it just says "John", so you now need to enter into the app to see what the post is about....

Just downloaded it on my 9700 and I noticed that there are some notable improvements. The photo viewer is revised to load pictures faster and it also shows a banner on the top with the number of likes and comments. Kinetic scrolling works well on the 9700 and the screen transitions are smoother overall. Also, the friends lists refreshes much faster. The app is much more useable from the changes under the hood. The UI is basically unchanged but works. Overall I am very glad this app was improved and seems to be much higher quality than 1.7

Download 1.8 OTA...when it finally finishes and asks whether to reboot, press the end button to exit, go and open facebook - options - logout.

Enter facebook again, login with your info, wait for it to load fully, then battery pull.

When device boots up again, open facebook and it should be version 1.8, having bypassed the agree/disagree/keycode notice.

Enjoy!

I'm already having enough memory problems with my Storm as is w/o installing more software (had to remove some because it was starting to bring up a screen telling me to uninstall something). Every link I try keeps saying "Install with App world" and "Install App world". What I want is "Install".

So, short version. Want to install Facebook w/o App World. How?

  • Reply

maxknux Aug 19, 2010 at 5:19 am

They used to have it on the BB Mobile site where you can download it via the browser but now you only option RIM gives is a webpage that directs you to App World.

I guess they got tired of have maintaining two gateways so I think they will start to have the BB Mobile gateway to direct to App world.

I have the Pearl Flip with the Beta App World 2.0 and its not that bad but due to the memory organization with OS 4.6.0.180 which crashes whenever I go under 35 MB for a install.

So you might need to get rid of apps to make room for App World for you to update your RIM Apps for now on. It is disappointing but it seems like that is the trend going on with RIM.

Or other option is to read from the forum or other countless posts that have a OTA Link but its not the direct way or secure due to being a third party.

But the best part? Its running now! I've never had my FB app run quick at all.. Itd take forever as if I had 1 bar of signal, and the phone would be a slide show. So hey.. Minor improvements, but the fact it runs quick is great.

Not that is really a problem, just asking :)

Even as of this morning it's not showing in app workd for me. Used the OTA link on the first page of the comments and got it but I don't see any difference at all.
I'm running a Bold 9650 and it's still ver slow to refresh and refresh friends, Also don't see any of the differences that people are mentioning at all. The scrolling is still jumpy for me.
Compared to the non updated version on my friend's Tour and it's identical in every way.
Under Options, Applications, It does show as the version shown above.

I have a 8900 running 5.0.0.822 on T-Mobile, just for F.Y.I. purposes.
I installed this facebook version 1.8.0.49 from the http://bit.ly/facebook49 link.
It appears to me from some testing, if the app is not "running" you get a regular email notification, but as long as it is "running" you get the normal notification that opens up in the facebook app like previous versions.
By "running" I mean, when you push and hold the menu key, the facebook app icon shows in the icon list.
Basically, what it amounts to, is when you are in the facebook app, you have to hit the end key and not the back key, so the facebook app stays "running".
If this is to be the case, I really wish I could downgrade, as NICE as this version is, this is a BIG downfall!

EDIT: Just after I posted this, with the facebook app closed out, I got the regular notification AND an email notification in my messages folder.
Maybe another battery pull is in order. LOL

Yeah I tried this and I'm still only getting notifications trough my email only on my storm 2,sucks cuz I can't reply or to them' To makes things more interesting I also have and iphone after my update to its doing the same thing,.Im starting to believe this may have something to do with Facebook servers really,.what do you think?

It's completely related to facebook and it's servers, just like any other time there has been an update to the BlackBerry app or to the facebook website, we will have to wait for the bugs and kinks to get worked out.

Tried using App World on my 8330m, and got "907 Invalid COD". Then tried going straight to the link: http://bit.ly/facebook49... and same thing "907 Invalid COD".

Finally went to: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/features/social/facebook_download.jsp

Downloaded and working perfectly. I got version 1.8.0.48 on my 8330m. It's a LOT faster than my old 1.7 version. Thanks everyone! I'm telling my friends right now.

how you found this, but this was the only way I could get to work also. Every other method was no go! I don't know if you did this too, but I had to have my phone (s2) connected to computer for it to d/l that way. Rebooting now so hopefully everything is golden. Thanks

...looks good! I love how when you integrate it with your messages screen, you can see the comment right away. Also, the load time is much quicker and the wall writing/message writing features work pretty quickly as well. Great update! I just wanna see some extra features, like posting video or being able to see a person's info.

Downloaded to my Storm1 with beta App World. Download was fast, installation smooth, and the new FB app came right up after required reboot. No interference with BBM or anything else on my phone.

As far as the app, news feed pics seem to load a little faster, but the basic interface looks identical to me so far, but still checking it out for what's new.

Am I the only one who, upon installation on my 9630, was prompted to put in a keycode?? Now I can't use the app, though it's not stopped it from giving me tons of updates that I can't check. Grr!

If AppWorld does not give you v1.8.0.49, try logging on to www.facebook.com from a desktop PC. After logging on go to the Facebook for BlackBerry page and click on the [Download Application] button on the left (I don't know if you need to "Like" the page first before this button will appear for you). Then follow the instructions.

Hope this helps!

If you haven't set your options, look at the bottom of the Options screen, you can set the number of feeds to view to 10, 20, or 30. Default is 10.

Filing another same experience about the new FB notification issues, as previously mentioned too by dreamweavermx, BlackBerry Brian and giorgosh , I have found that the new software failed to notify promptly as previous version. Although the latest version boasts its push-notification method, imho, the email notification method is somewhat more robust.
I didn't notice this until I logged into my FB profile via laptop, and there has been 10 new notifications that has not been received onto my BB yet.
I am pretty sure this is most likely comes from misconfiguration in the notification settings on the FB part. But even if it is so, then I supposed the new software should have a button which functions is to set default the notification settings on the FB site (the one under Account Settings when you logged in via regular browser).
Another thing is that the notification may come in very late. I noticed that it may come as late as 20 mins after it was supposedly arrived. (when i got the notification, the time stamp on the comment was made 20 mins ago).
Anyone who may know any solution to this, please do share your tips. Greatly appreciated.

This version should NOT have been leaked until it was ready for prime time.
I have not found any way to go back to the 1.7 version, as BlackBerry and AppWorld both are issuing this new buggy release.
Now I either get nothing at all, or I get an email and a notification at the same time, I'm not partial of the redundancy at all.
If they wanted to switch to a push notification rather than using email, they should have made sure it was gonna work first!

I've been running it since it came out, and have not got a notification yet, and I've had people comment on my status, pokes, etc. May be a bit faster, but nothing noticeable. And I'm seeing a bit of a memory leak as well.

I refuse to get emails for notifications. Too much clutter in my inbox as is.

Log into facebook from a computer, go to account at top right, then click account settings, then click the notifications tab, you will see that upon installing the app, for some reason, it unchecks most of everything that was previously checked.
Check all that apply to you and then click save changes all the way at the bottom.
