Evolution Browser gets updated to version 2.0 for the ultimate BlackBerry 10 browsing experience

Evolution Browser
By James Richardson on 23 Feb 2014 03:53 am EST

Users of Evolution Browser for BlackBerry 10 may want to head on over to BlackBerry World and grab version 2.0 which has now been released. The new improvements have been implemented for OS 10.2.1 and give an all-round better experience.

As we stated in our original post, Evolution Browser (which is Built for BlackBerry) packs in a bunch of stuff that you won't find in the native BlackBerry 10 one. If adverts get on your nerves when browsing the web from your BlackBerry 10 device then Evolution Browser will remove them - clever.

That's just the tip of the iceberg though. Hit up the link at the base of the page for the full list of features - it's bursting with them.

Updated for OS 10.2.1

  • Improved rendering and page display
  • Password protect the app (set password in settings)
  • Updated adblock engine
  • Updated lightening mode

Evolution Browser gets updated to version 2.0 for the ultimate BlackBerry 10 browsing experience

I like Evolution, haven't been able to locate the "Open in New Tab" function yet. Any light on that?

Zzzzwiped from a Zedevice....

And the way it handles the url is stupid and slow. Doesn't auto select the url when you go to change it so you can quickly type over it, you have to manually select all and delete before you start entering the new url, and it also doesn't recognize spaces as dots like the stock browser does. Those are the reasons I never use it even though I bought it...

Yeah, I was hoping the URL entry action would be improved; it also bedevils the "secure browser" in Max Mobile Security. Instead of "manually selecting all," though, you can simply tap the "(x)" icon on the right. Still requires two taps instead of one, but manageable.

Similarly, opening a new tab in Evolution requires three taps instead of two as in the stock browser. Tap the menu button to the right of the URL box, tap "Tabs" in the menu that pops up, and then tap "New Tab" at the top. It's not that laborious when you get used to it, but I'm not sure why the developer doesn't want to allow for one tap access to tabs.

They still haven't fixed this? What junk, I have left multiple reviews and he won't post then,he only posts the 4 and 5 Star review. That alone is why I will not purchase any of his other apps, what's he trying to hide

Posted via CB10

Just an FYI, I was just on the review site and indeed there is at least one 1 star and a 3 star review. Shao is a good app developer.

Yeah. When developers delete reviews it can take several days to happen - and sometimes blackberry doesn't remove the review at all.

Might be why there is only one when people say they submitted many.

Posted via CB from my LE

Agreed. Can't believe it's still not an option to open a link in a new tab. Main reason I never use it. And to create a new blank tab requires going through 2 levels of menus. No other mobile browser is slower than Evolution for creating a blank tab.

Also the url highlighting issue is another reason I never use it.

Posted via CB10

Oh, and the fact it doesn't support flash is another major reason I never use it.

Three days ago, while just browsing news stories, Evo Browser crashed on me. When I restarted it, every single one of my carefully-pruned bookmarks had been deleted - dozens of them.

Not impressed. The only good features of Evo seem to be the ad blocker and agent changer.

Anyone ever tried the "Backup and Restore" function under Settings when your swipe down from the top?

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

Terrible support. Mediocre app. I'm certain that this "update" is just for boosting the download count. My review has been deleted from BBWorld.

Posted via CB10

I can't seem to make my review stick either, but in my case it might just have been too long...

Posted without the aid of AutoCorrect with my physical keyboard via CB10

I agree. No devs should be allowed to do such thing as deleting user reviews. Devs should be allowed to respond to those comments in public for clarification but NOT to delete them. At least that's the way Google Play Store handles it.

Try posting some three star constructive criticism on Shao's app like I did, or screen capture some of the recent ones, then you will see in a few days it will be gone.

Posted via CB10

I agree but this dev certainly deleted all bad reviews. Otherwise this would be a 2 star app

Posted via CB10

My review was deleted as well.

It has been months since I. Purchased it and the browser still cannot render unmobile pages.

The text and images are blurry on zoom in. Waste of space.

Posted via CB10

Evolution has one great practical thing.

Can change user agent, means you can surf as if you were

Chrome Desktop
IExplorer Desktop
BlackBerry 10

Got me out of trouble a couple of times when some websites claimed they wouldn't want to support "Safari". BB10 browser is usually identified as Safari, and some websites hate that.

Chrome Desktop and Android mode works very well for me. Sometimes I even use iPhone just for the heck of it.

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

^This is why I don't use it! BB10 original browser all the way just because it has flash!

Posted via Me on my Z from CrackBerry

Well, that and for me the way it handles the entering of a new web address is 100 times better and faster than for evolution. The stock browser is pretty awesome, don't really see a use for this...

Posted without the aid of AutoCorrect with my physical keyboard via CB10

Yea tbh I paid for this app but regret it. The stock browser is MILES better, and web pages dont render correctly. However trying to make a browser that is better than the stock BB10 browser is a monumental task, so props to Shao for giving it a go :p

Thanks for your opinions, I am glad I do not have to waste money on this to try it out.

The reviews seemed shady, now I know the dev just goes and prunes out the ones he does not like.

Why is CB advertising this crap?

It's a very good question.

I have chats open with 120 developers for BlackBerry 10, all with great apps and folks who genuinely love the blackberry community. These same devs answer every email and help everywhere on CB.

# of times any of the 120 had an app reviewed by CB = 1 or 2

# of times Evolution browser has been reviewed by CB = 6 or so

Maybe they are paid to advertise this?

Posted via CB from my LE

Finally the AdBlock Function works for the first time. Now I can start using the Browser. Been waiting for months.

Posted via CB10 App / Z10-STL100-2@

Imho bb10 stock browser is more than awesome.
The only thing it lacks is the adBlock...

Posted from Z10 with leak. Pwnage apparatus!

O want addons for BB10 browser, just like Firefox. Happy to pay devs!

Adblock, Anonymizer, TOR, user agent changer, all the goodness,...

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

There was a thread on CrackBerry last year, some other devs called out Shao and he basically said he wasn't supporting BB10 any more.

I believe the only reason this app gets featured is because the Dev is also a CrackBerry Mod - I'd like to hear evidence to the contrary.

That mayyyy have been me. It's not my shining moment but when some devs get all the attention, and other great devs are ignored by CB. It can be a little frustrating :)

Posted via CB from my LE

Why someone would pay for a browser with as good as the native browser already is is beyond me

Posted via CB10

I expected more from this browser than what I got, I've gone back to the stock browser because evolution needs to evolve more!!

Posted via CB10

All of you should be happy to support BlackBerry 10 development.

So it doesn't have features you want or work in the way you would like, instead of publicly destroying the app and the dev, instead suggest to him your improvements .

While support is good and necessary, valid criticism is needed too. I for one am happy to know that I won't need to try it out as it seems to have quite some issues, and I wouldn't have known without the comments.

Posted via CB10

Agreed. Negative comments are valuable negative feedback for prospective purchasers, and if they are voiced with more anger and insult than some would like to see, then I think that it's beholden to the reader of those angry comments to look through the invective for the underlying valid complaints. Whofrank's comment amounts to stating that we should self-censor our opinions, hiding them from the community at large, and direct them only to developers, putting developers' financial interests ahead of users'. I'm assume that Frank didn't mean to endorse a blatantly anti-user perspective; it seems like he just wants us all to play nice.

Thanks, frank. Yes, keep it positive.

I phrased it as a question, no "Open in New Tab" in Evolution? and applauded the useful user agent changer, great feature. Massages some websites into believing your phone is an Android, and direct you to the apk download. Love that.

Zzzzwiped from a Zedevice....

Whofrank, this browser has been covered here many times. A lot of us, myself included, had a much better reaction to it before. And yes, I've vocalized my issues about the browser in a polite way hoping the dev would read it and implement the improvements I've suggested since he does read these pages, but it's gone ignored every time. And I've brought it up in every post about this browser. So I've given up on it. Obviously the features I want are not on his priority list, and given that the stock browser has them, I'll simply stick to using that...

Posted without the aid of AutoCorrect with my physical keyboard via CB10

I've been suggesting things to him since he released this app, he replies to none of my emails and does not post any review under 4 stars.

Believe me this app will only disappoint you. My suggestion was so simple, have the url highlight with one click, how hard is that? Also judging by the comments I'm not the only one who asked

Posted via CB10

Comments on this page are invaluable when it is time to spend $.

Clearly, this app should not be something someone spends $ on based on these comments.

TY for being honest, and shedding light on the way this dev fails. Saved me from supporting him.

I find the user agent switching to be very useful. There is also one ad-supported forum I frequently browse, so ad-free browsing is a good feature. I'm hoping improved rendering will now make for a better browsing experience.

It definitely has its uses, but the native browser is still my default.

Posted via CB10

An Internet Browser which is not supporting standard things ( Adobe Flash) can not be any good.

I not understand, if I develop a Internet Browser one if the main things it MUST support is Adobe Flash. We have year 2014 :)

Z10_STL100-2_10.2.1. 2141/2142

I love having Flash in my browser but this is not "must have" at all, for three reasons.

- iPhone/iPad users do not have it
- WindowsPhone users do not have it
- on the BB10 browser, Flash is deactivated by default.

Posted via CB10

I bought this a few weeks back so I could use google drives/docs... seems to be the only thing it's good for, can disguise itself as an android :p

I would say: "all apps from this developer has disappointed the whole BlackBerry 10 Community".

Posted via CB10

I believe that "my homepage" app is from this same guy and I really like it. I have a pretty snazzy homepage because of it. Of course, if I wasn't lazy I could have easily made that myself since I'm good with html but it did make it pretty easy to do it from the phone...

Posted without the aid of AutoCorrect with my physical keyboard via CB10

Really! Have you done a survey or something? I like this app, it's handy for some uses.

Keep The Faith  BlackBerry Q10 

Absolutely correct. Creating apps is one thing but providing customer support is another. Support is non existent. He completely ignores customers. Not just me, I have friends who said the same. Ever since he was highlighted by CrackBerry he got swell headed.

Posted via CB10

Shaosoft made the CB App for the BlackBerry PlayBook, and even if it is not on par with the (more recent) CB10 app, I use it on a daily basis.

Posted via CB10

I've deleted the app, the stock BlackBerry browser is miles better.

I'd like to see Mozilla bring a Native version of Fifefox to BB10.

No autoselect url and can't open new tabs from a link. This makes using this browser such a pain in the ass. I love the night mode though. BlackBerry should include a dark mode for their browser.

Posted via CB10 on my Q10

This is the browser I use if some site won't play nicely with native browser, eg AOL mail refuses to show my inbox on my native browser but works fine in evolution. Great job guys.

Photos captured using BlackBerry devices - C00016D81

The scrolling feature which hide the menu bar is worth it to me alone, I don't get what the fuss is all about, just use both stock browser and evolution browser depending on your needs for the moment. I have the Max Safe Browser also.

Most of the comments here are completely at odds with the CB invitation. What gives?

Had a look at James' original post again. Seems like users' requests for improvements (the most grievous omissions) got ignored to a great extend, but improvements to existing features and even new ones were added.

Bought and used for a while; now deleted. No real need for it over the baked in browser.

Posted via CB10

Another set of bookmarks,

being able to delete ALL browsing history in one go, without losing stuff you would like to keep for a little longer,

one script enabled browser, one with scripts blocked

keep certain browsing topics separate

many use cases for a second browser, hey, there is even one for exactly that purpose, called Web Splitter

I've removed it for a long time because I was not able to open a link to a new tab! Still stick wit BlackBerry browser!

Posted via CB10

Tried this app, thought it was good because crackberry said it was, I tried it, pictures are blurry, and no pinch to zoom, im going back to the original browser

Posted via CB10

When I purchased it, there were almost only 5* ratings. Before I left my comment last night, thee were 2 or 3 1-2* ratings. I left a 2* rating, it's still there, wonder how long....

The first round of negative comments from the last few days have now been deleted. See it for yourself. I'm seriously disgusted by the developer now.

Posted via CB10

There is a lot that is good about Evolution but even the fact that you can't select it as a default browser makes it a deal breaker for me.

Posted via CB10

Again, all critical reviews got erased on BBC! The dev. can't even live with critical reviews. I don't know why reviews can even be deleted, this is a scam! How can I get my money back?

Does someone know what can be done about crooks like this guy? He's cheating the whole community! Any way to report this to BlackBerry? Will they even care?

+1 to those who bought this and wasted my money. Ditto for my negative review. Many of the same issues as already mentioned.

However, with 10.2.1 Android support, I am back with Opera Mini! Beautiful native rendering, simple to use tabs and reading mode, and syncs bookmarks with my desktop version. No flash support, and a little on the slow side, but I'll take that over difficult usability of Evolution any day!

By the way, is CB getting some kind of kickback from this dev? I always see announcements for updates to this piece of garbage, and never any mention of all the negative comments the announcement and app generate. What's up?

I don't know if this crook (ShaoSoft) is somehow associated with CB? It almost looks like! Guys like him are destroying this whole community! What good is an app-store where reviews can be deleted by a dev.?? b.t.w. he has even blocked me even from writing reviews! he probably does this for everyone writing critical comments...
We need to create some shitstorm here to destroy this guy!
