On January 28th, 2014, carriers around the world began pushing out BlackBerry's latest update for the BlackBerry 10 operating system, taking it up to version 10.2.1. The rollout of BlackBerry 10.2.1 is a global one, but not all carriers received the update the first day. BlackBerry expects that by the end of February all BlackBerry 10 owners will have the update available to them.

In true CrackBerry fashion, we've been all over this update, so in this post we wanted to roundup the most important links in regards to BlackBerry 10.2.1. A lot of exciting new features were introduced in this update, including the ability to install Android apps onto your BB10 phone. It's exciting stuff, so we'll keep this update short and you can click on through below to discover everything you need to know about BlackBerry 10.2.1.

TUTORIALS: HOW TO INSTALL ANDROID APPS ON BLACKBERRY 10.2.1

When it comes to installing Android apps on BlackBerry 10.2.1, you have a couple options. Currently, you will *not* find these Android apps in BlackBerry World. Instead, you'll either have to track down the actual Android app file (called an .apk) from somewhere like our CrackBerry forums, or you can install a third party Android app store like the one from Amazon onto your BlackBerry 10 phone, and then download apps with relative ease from there. The following guides will help get you on your way.

GETTING THE MOST POPULAR "MISSING" APPS ON YOUR BLACKBERRY

With support for Android apps now on BB10, that means you can now get plenty of the most popular apps onto your BlackBerry that were not there before. We've created some specific guides to help you out here. Be sure to share them with your BlackBerry 10 using friends!

Apps don't seem sluggish to me, but the only game I have downloaded is bejeweled blitz, the rest have all been apps like instagram, coach's eye, etc.

Posted via CB10

Instagram doesn't seem too sluggish to me. Which app are you referring to?
Native is definitely best. I think Android runtime is going to cause devs to not give us native apps. I think that's the biggest problem with 10.2.1.

As long as there are a way for the dev to know how many BlackBerry 10 devices are using their Android apps, I think their may be some chances they reconsider.

 CB10 

I find only the loading is sluggish. Once the app starts, I find it runs fine. This is based on a few apps, Candy Crush being the most notable.

Posted via CB10

Don't get it, are you pro or contra BB?

You're either a BB purist, great, or an Android shill, right?

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

I am of course pro BB what still irritated about all the hype about side loading and now that new trick to get Android apps onto BB10 devices. I guess you would never see that iPhone would run Android apps. Complaining about Android apps not running smoothly on BB10 devices is in my eyes completely over the top.
And also - nobody could tell me so far which serious apps are missing for the BB10 OS.

Excuse me but that comment seems a bit out of the place, 1st it's not android apps, is just apps that we didn't have available and now we do, and 2nd i don't like android like i love BB OS10, but apps, i like apps, who doesn't ?

It's not always the fault of your runtime. I've noticed that newer versions of Candy Crush are a bit sluggish on my Z10. I thought it was my device, too, but then I saw my wife playing it on her iPad mini and it was equally as sluggish. So it's [the version of] the app, not the Z10. When I play Farm Heroes Saga on my Z10, it's SUPER snappy. So the sluggishness is app and/or app version dependent, not a problem with the Android runtime.

Haven't had the pleasure of updating to 10.2.1 but I'm eagerly and patiently waiting while still on Q10SQN100-2/10.1.0.4699.

Kevin, I really appreciate the re-cap, I like the organization that you brought forth. Even though I haven't used the newest os update I would say that your post resembles the software, sleep, simple yet very informative!

2nd here Kevin, battling the Crackberry and novice user demands requires skill and you and the Crackberry site do it well.

Posted via CB10

My update fails at 98% and says my internet connection failed. LAN connection is fine. I just tried deleting the unlocked runtime and will update if that was the cause.

Posted via CB10

Make sure you have enough available free space on your device. There was an article on CrackBerry yesterday about this exact thing happening.

Posted via CB10

Next time just don't bother with kindergarten games like first second third...

Problem solved.

Posted via CB10

So far so good. No a single glitch on Z30 when downloading from amazon store. I love 10.2.1.537 os version. They run smooth!

Thank you Mr. Chen. Let's see the next update fix the bugs in 10.2.1.. this OS is just awesome, I put my iPhone in drawer lol

Posted via CB10

Yes, thank you Mr. Chen, you are a man of action! Thorsten, you deserve some thanks as I'm sure this was started some weeks or months ago.

A question: do the Android apps detract from the inherent security of BlackBerrys?

Posted via CB10

Permissions, that's a question I was asking myself. Some free Android apps want outrageous permissions. Checked on a relative's S4 recently. Only option, you just grant them.

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

You can get Viber using Snap or apktrain website. It's working great. Tried both sending messages and making calls and no issues encountered yet.

Posted via CB10

Thanks Kevin, excellent summary to have handy. I feel like back to school the last two days, but I am enjoying the experience and I LOVE my 2 weeks old Z30!

Maybe you can contact BlackBerry and ask why the camera app in remember and priority calling doesn't work. Confirmed on 7 devices...

On Verizon. Z10. 10.2.1. Open remember app. Look at action bar at bottom, camera is grayed out. Doesn't work. Reboot does not restore. I know 7 people with Verizon Z10's with same problem.

Prior to update the capture function worked.

That was my very first thought. Unfortunately the remember app is not listed at all under app permissions... I have no idea what the problem is.
My friend also has a q10, but there the camera icon isn't greyed out...

Kevin, Can you make a how to guide for some features? Like: how to use remote search of email on BB 10. Or how to use wi-fi direct and Miracast on BB 10?

Posted via CB10

The camera does not work in the remember app and priority calling is non functional also... other than that battery life amazing... 10 hours off charger and at 40% battery with moderate usage. a completely new phone imo... great job blackberry and verizon.

Ah, Just tried using remember with the camera on the leak 10.2.1.1925 and it appears to work. Photo saved etc.

I still have no update from T Mobile and not only that, but some of the movies I purchased for 99 cents during the holiday season have magically disappeared from my play list and the market place. For example, Jingle all the way, Jennifers body, miracle on 34 th street, and others have all vanished. I feel really cheated.

Posted via CB10

Look in your file manager under downloads. That happened to me too. I don't know why they don't show on BB World but they play just fine.

Posted via CB10 with "Z" best

Thanks Kevin great article.

Can we get article about paid apps and games, which ones work and where to get them etc.

Posted via CB10

I do not receive push notifications on android apps. Is there an explanation on this? Checked on the app settings and they are on...

Posted via CB10

I just made a topic about the crazy amount of 'small' articles coming out, and them not getting the attention they deserve. They quickly disappeared from view and it was hard to see which articles contained what information.

I am glad to see this article combine them all so they get more time in the spotlights! Well done, Kevin!

Although I should still mention it is too bad the iGrann article is now kind of lost in all the talk about 10.2.1 and instagram.apk possibilities. Because even if we can now install .apk, I still think a native app like that should deserve more attention (support the small-time developers!).

The list says that "Wind Canada" has put out the update already but I'm not getting it. Also my Q10 is telling me that I'm running both 10.2.1.176 and 10.2.1.1055. Weird

Posted via CB10 with a Q10 (:

Anyone else get a tease from AT&T this morning about an update, to then try and receive the usual "software is up to date" message in the settings??

Posted via CB10

I'm wondering whether I should install the 1926 radio file. I've heard of problems with the 1899 one that ships with this release. Kevin?

Anyone figure out how to download Google Maps from Snap? It complains that I already have a Maps app but that is the BlackBerry Maps app and I can't delete it.

Posted via CB10

Oh, I think it would be a natural for an International holiday. I barely got sleep last night and there are so many nooks and crannies I want to explore tonight... glorious overload!

I haven't seen the movie "Her" yet, but kinda feeling like I am falling in love with my Z10. Thanks BlackBerry! Excellent work. Elegant is a better word.

Guys, I'm new to this forum. Can't seem to find radio on music app. Is it possible to share screen shot here? Thanks all.

By the way, Viber's working great :)

Posted via CB10

If you have a Z10 it won't be there, otherwise open the music app, it's on the black bar on the bottom of the screen.

Posted via CB10

Yeah. Mine's a z10. I would love to have radio function on my phone but not a biggie anyway.

Still loving my first BlackBerry phone! Thanks for the reply canadian nick.

Posted via CB10

What you need to know is AT&T haven't release shit yet!

US is lagging it so what's the point with release dates Globally if shit don't add up?

That's what you and I need to know.

Posted via CB10

When will Microsoft apps like OneNote and Lync be able to work. Until they gets these productivity apps functional I don't think anyone should be saying the app gap is closed. Other than that the update has been a big step forward.

Posted via CB10

Not ideal but if you sync Onenote to Skydrive you can open Onenote Web from the BlackBerry browser to view your notes and do basic updating.

So Kevin, to prevent fragmented carrier rollout dates, you suggested that BlackBerry have carriers hold back releases until all carriers had approved them. With the global nature of this release and the fact that the last leak, which turned out to the official release, was available for about a month beforehand, do think that is what happened?

Z10 STL100-3 |10.2.1.1925 | Bell | CB10

Booting or starting/initializing an android app is indeed sluggish on my z10. But once your in, everything else is ok.

Posted via CB10

I can't wait until AT&T releases the update on February 10th. But I won't be installing any Android apps on my phone the apps in BlackBerry World are fine for me. I wish they allowed the option to remove Android runtime. It's just wasted device memory on my phone.

Posted Via AT&T BlackBerry Z10

Can you a dress the fact that some of us still don't have the update!!!! Your like rubbing all of its goodness I'm my face...

Posted via CB10

Great summary!

Thank you Crackberry team for all the grinding you've done the past couple of days. Every time I look at my phone there's a red star on CB10. You guys are bustin' a$$!

Posted via CB10

As usual AT&T has left us hanging. Talked/chatted with 3 different customer service reps in the past 24 hours and none of them can say when or even if there might be an OS update at some point in the future.

Totally useless. BlackBerry needs to control OS updates like Apple does. I don't see my wife or son waiting for AT&T to push out there iPhone updates after "testing ".

Posted via CB10

And BlackBerry gets blamed for not providing timely support when it is clearly the carriers creating bad customer service experiences.

Posted via CB10

It pains me that I waited this long without loading the leak, and now I have to wait another month (Sprint). I know, I've been complaining a lot in the blogs, but it's rough seeing so many having all the fun and it "feels" like by the time I get it officially everyone will be looking forward to 10.3.

(insert sad face here)

Hey ya know I'll look at it this way:

By the time I get it, I'll have read everything there is to know about 10.2.1 and already know it inside and out so I won't have any problems or issues. :)

Posted via CB10 via the power of " Q "

Hey there! I have Sprint also, but I downloaded 10.2.1xxx via Sachesi! Works like a charm! You should try it out. I'm running the official Rogers Version, which I believe is a Canadian carrier. Use country code 302, carrier code 720 and I used variant -3 but I think you can use -5 also. I used -5 when I upgraded to 10.2 via Sachesi. I recommend any and everyone on Sprint upgrade via Sachesi.

Posted via CB10

Why don't you download the leak? I know I was a little apprehensive to do it myself, but I am glad that I did (5 days before the actual release!). CB has a great post on getting it done quickly and relatively painlessly. I had one problem with audio after it, but one hard restart and perfect since then.

Tapped and flicked from my BlackBerry Z30!

My Q10 normally gets 24 hours out of my battery. Now it turns red at 12 hours and I'm not using it for most of the day (low usage). What is going on?

Posted via CB10

Have you done a full battery pull. Take out battery, sim card and SD card for at least 5 minutes and the reinsert.

Keep The Faith  BlackBerry Q10 

It usually takes a few days for the battery to settle in after an update, hang in there. Also you can use the app manager to see what's draining your battery

Posted via CB10

Cannot complain I'm so happy. Now i got it all. All the apps I needed on my Z10. no problems all systems running smoothly. Dam this is truly a good day for me and blackberry Now I don't have to here from those dam iPhone and Android users about "but blackberry don't have those apps! Let's keep it moving blackberry

Posted via CB10

Well most US carriers haven't even released 10.2.1 and yet we have all these posts on CB =[
Dude notice probably 98% are foreign countries this sucks.

Posted via CB10

You can reinstall it if you want. Check CB forums thread "Legend leaks OS 10.2.1.1925" and search for the bar file. You side load the bar file to restore your porsche design clock.

BlackBerry must keep its identity while becoming like an android ghost, with seamless access to Google products. If it can do this and market it's security brand, and it's productivity in messaging focus it will rise again. Its hardware still needs to best the specs of samsung!

Posted via CB10

BB10 on S4-like specs (quad snapdragon or Exynos 8 core) would blow anything else out there straight out of the water.

Hope it happens, soon.

Love the update and most of my android apps are working perfectly...i just used back up and restore on my android phone, and emailed my apps to the z10...IMDB, movies one, speedtest, audio manager.

Posted via CB10

One feature i was looking forward was notify during call and although it's been added it is only limited to text messages only! Receiving bbm, whatsapp message or email does not still notify!

Posted via CB10

What about the security of those android apps being installed outside of the BlackBerry app store, are they safe? Do they pose a higher risk of my phone being hacked? Android phones have been notoriously known for being hacked via their apps, therefore, i decided to wait before installing the amazon app store completely and going full -bore, to see over the next couple of months if problems arise for others who have already gone full steam ahead.

Posted via CB10

Kevin, did you mention the new pinch in hub to filter? It is very cool and amazingly useful. I pinch my hub and on default all of my unread messages appear (with a great transition I might add). Very useful and it can be customised to sort for anything you want, I believe.

No, make them native BB10. (I feel your need and some apps won't do native version)

Is integrating less hassle than porting to native?

I'm happy with blackberry and BB10 is the best.

Posted via CB10

Finally got the update through MTS today...309mb and love it. Downloaded several apps and she works like a charm, of course there's lots of apps that wouldn't load/work either but it's all trial and error.

Posted via CB10

This is awesome. I hope this help some people overcome their fear and helps them take control of the content on their phone.

Stop, drop, and roll.

Downloaded amazon app store app. Works great. Apps work really well. Very smooth...fantastic.
Need to create an account before you can download any apps.

I think it's great that BB10 can now run Android apps. But having had a Nexus 5 for 2 months, I can say that BB10 is a far more integrated OS, smoother and overall allows for more productive use of the phone. There was not really an app gap for me. The list is Netflix, Instagram and games, which now all run on BlackBerry. BB10 is a better platform.

Posted via CB10

On the link that shows which Carriers have gotten the update, it says Wind Canada and I still haven't got the update ...

T-Mobile released it in so many countries except the USA? I don't know what's going on I think it a conspiracy. U.S against BlackBerry lol

Posted via CB10

Great post. Now if only you can include how to downgrade from a leak properly so that I can install it officially (I know they are the same technically)

Posted via CB10

You just install right over the leak. I had a "massive" 7mb download! 4minutes later and I was done.

Tapped and flicked from my BlackBerry Z30!

Ever since iv updated my Q10, it's gotten so much slower, and the battery drains much quicker than before. I like the small new features but really frustrated on how buggy and slow it has become!

Posted via CB10

How does the FM Radio thing work? We got one Q10, one Z30, bunch of Z10s and no Q5s. So I know only the Q10 and Z30 can handle teasing our android dudes. But any comments on how to use it?

Posted via CB10

Yeah I'm done now, time to get an iPhone. Since the update none of my side loaded apps work and I can't install any new ones it just stays on processing. So now not only has this update not given my phone the ability to install all the none BlackBerry apps, it's taken away it's ability to open ANY android application I side loaded such as google maps. Removing one of the main uses of my phone completely.

Worst part is there is no word of any fix yet, rendering me using a BlackBerry over another phone pretty much pointless now.

Posted via CB10

Have you tried backing up, reloading and then starting with a fresh OS install? After that put your Android .apks back on. Previously sideloaded ones can break, you're not the only one.

Hey guy I have ran into some issues with 10.2.1!

1. Wifi does not connect properly!
2. For some reason I manage to keep pocket dialing on my Q10 even on the last OS!
3. Where do I find the FM radio app??

Thanks guys love that you are all here like a family to help out!

The FM Radio is inside the Music App. There's a radio button to click on. I have always had issues pocket dialing or even dialing when I'm holding my BB in my hand as that phone icon is so sensitive. I have to clear my phone log on a daily basis so I don't keep calling people. I wish I could disable it and only use a keyboard shortcut to make a phone call.

Not trying to be a smarty, but the genuine BB flip case helped me a lot in that respect on my Q10. Got a big, phat, proud Berry logo on it, too.

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

I have case that's designed to save it from breaking as we have concrete floors at work. Will that case prevent it from smashing if dropped (ie durable)?

This is awesome news...unless you live in the US...thank you CrackBerry for posting the leaks of 10.2.1 because it makes my Z10 so much better!

Updated just fine.
Useful but really not more than catching up with competition:
-pulldown quick settings,
- Amazon appstore workaround.

Letdown:
- why is it still impossible to move emails from sent items to another folder??? Is it really that much to ask for or such a strange habit to clean the sent items folder?

All I want is the ability to store nd access apps from the SD card cause for some of us 16gig is not enough...wish the OS hard ways to do that

Love the new pull down screen, flashlight, and the ability to attach with out trying to pull down screen and the best one of all is that I can answer the phone on the first ring. Could never get the swipe down thing to work for me and frustrated me to no end. Keep it up BlackBerry things are looking great.

Does 10.2.1 leave the black theme in place for the Q10 or let you choose black/white? I didn't do the last update because I read here that it removed some of the black themes on the Q10.

Shame that BlackBerry didn't release this "seamless" Android app compatibility when BB10 was launched. It might have been a different story RE device sales. Oh well...

Now all they have to do is up the processor speeds so that the Android apps can be run at decent speeds consistently.

I like the new update as updates go but find that by battery last about 50% less then usual

Can anyone tell me what's up with the apps from Amazon App Store? When you download an app and it then says 'Candy Crush by Joe Smoe', what does that mean? Is it the 'real' app or not?

I'm just a bit confused about this Android junk yard stuff. I don't want bullshit apps on my phone stealing my information etc. Can anyone help me here? This update is great, but I do miss the security of BlackBerry World...

.. Here in UK.. just managed to load up the NatWest banking app via Snap, log into my account previously set up on my old BB7 device. No BB10 app on the horizon, although one may be in the making. Who knows? Not to worry, as currently we can all experience the best of both app worlds. Not sure what the future holds, but this android runtime stuff is great. ;0)

I posted earlier that I couldn't get the amazon app store. I got it now. That first link must have been flawed.

What's the deal with the camera in the remember app. It's inactive. It was working before 10.2

I'm having the same problem. Same with wife and kid. My co-worker's phone...no problem. maybe a corrupted download of os. Link for Mac is flaky and not working properly so I can't really reload the os. Maybe an update to the remember app will fix... also priority calling is off also. Maybe a Verizon thing...

PLEASE, PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE fix the god damn Contacts app!!! It is all out of whack. Yesterday i went to add a new contact and it added the phone number to an unrelated contact and wiped the existing number. WTF??? I lost my original contact details and my new contact had the other contacts name added. Why does it have to add a sim contact when my settings don't include sim contacts? This has been F#$!ed up prior to latest update, i would have thought this would have been fixed as many people have been complaining about this for a while now. BlackBerry, please get your basic shite together!!!
