Hello again readers! Dear Berry is here once again with a mailbag full of BlackBerry questions and woes. Today's question comes from a reader who asks:

How do I change the name of my device? I have a few BlackBerry devices and when I go to connect them to a Bluetooth device or to BlackBerry Link it's confusing seeing the long BLACKBERRY name and distinguishing between them.

Being able to change the name of your BlackBerry device, essentially creating a nickname, is a rather simple process. When you change the name, it makes it easier for you to discover and identify it on other devices as well as on your Wi-Fi network.

All you have to do is follow these quick steps.

  • Swipe down from the top of the screen on the home screen
  • Tap Settings and then About
  • In the Device Name field, enter in the new name for your BlackBerry 10 device
  • Changes are automatically saved. Once complete you can swipe back to System Settings or out of the application

You can also change it within BlackBerry Link itself, but for the sake of simplicity it's easier to just do it on device as the changes made there will carry across to Link anyway. See you next time!

Have a question about BlackBerry etiquette? Need advice on how to cope with your BlackBerry addiction? Dear Berry has you covered and there's no question too big or problem too small. Submit any of your BlackBerry woes by email to dearberry@crackberry.com or on Twitter @DearBerryCB.

Dear Berry: How do I change the name of my device?

Wait!!

When you first get the phone and start exploring it, don't change the name on the device before ever connecting to LINK. I once changed the name right when I got the device and when I connected to the PC, Link never recognized any device with my BlackBerry ID and it was SO frustrating. I had to do a security wipe to reset the original name of the device and it finally connected to LINK. From there, you can safely change the name of the device from LINK itself.

This is just the experience I had, many others might have had different and possibly better experiences

Just wanted to say I love the Dear Berry column. There are so may useful little hints that get talked about! Keep up the fine work!

Only Apple can answer this as only they can change the device name and get you to buy it again.

You may find that if you change the name it could be forced changed back by your carrier (personal experience on a SIM free Q5 where I couldn't change the name when installing a carrier version of an OS!)

I believe I changed mine ages ago. I don't remember how I did it. Maybe while installing blackberry link, or transferring the data from my old BlackBerry to my current one. Anyway, go ahead an change yours! :)
