CrackBerry Poll: Do you use Social Feeds in BlackBerry 6?

Social Feeds BlackBerry

While at CES last week I was talking to Kevin about different apps and we realized that neither of us use the Social Feeds app, leading us to wonder just how many users do. Social Feeds first popped up on the Torch and BlackBerry 6, and is simply an easy way to view Twitter, Facebook and IM apps all in one easy feed. I personally wasn't a fan as the only included apps I use are Twitter and Facebook, and I didn't want them both running in one feed (just a matter or preference). So our question today is this -- do you use the Social Feeds app in BlackBerry 6? Cast your vote in the poll above then leave a comment below letting us know why you do or don't.

RSS Feeds only, especially for financial times and some other analysts sites. The summary of facebook, twitter, bbm etc. is in my eyes just rubbish and totaly confusing..

only for twitter and RSS feeds

I would love yo use it, if it didn't kill my battery. And the same goes for bbm groups, I have to turn the notifications off so they don't drain my battery.

When I have social feeds active, it tears through my battery and causes the whole device to run like crap.

Yeah, totally sucks up all memory in a matter of hours on every OS6 version I've had so far on my 9700. I just don't install it anymore

I kinda like the social feeds except that the amount of messages is limited to only a few. Unless i'm missing something, i get only an hour or so of feeds displayed.

I use it most for the RSS which is (almost) on par with Viigo. All in all i wouldn't say i love it, but i like it all together.

I still have Viigo installed though for weather data and the great customisable / searchable RSS feed ability.

I love it for rss feeds. Sometimes my twitter gets cluttered with friends sting, magazines, etc...the rss eliminates the clutter and keeps me to my news only. Love it.

I did at first and it was and still is a nice feature.. Its just got annoying for me with it's constant updating and alerting every signal time somebody updated or posted something..SO i removed it

Those are settings you can modify within the App.

I went to Facebook website and shut down several of the 'update status' notifications, and it drastically reduced that amount of time I was distracted.

Log into Facebook on your desktop.

Go to Account Settings > Notifications

Uncheck everything under the email column that you don't want to be notified about. Then it won't notify you in the Social Feeds app.

Then I told Twitter to only alert me when I was mentioned or DM'ed.

with it u have to check 2 places to get the same notification. for that i didn't like it. good concept poor execution. I'll stick with social scope

i don't use social feeds because it does not work with UberTwitter.

I didn't see the point of it at first, but I'm starting to use it more. I use BerryReader as my main RSS app, but use the Social Feeds RSS Reader for my most important feeds. Things such as Breaking News in my area, and Traffic Updates. I like the speed of how it scrolls through Facebook and Twitter feeds. The Facebook app scrolls a tad slower. I'll use the Social Feed app if I want to quickly scroll through feeds. Just with it would allow me to view additional feeds. A View More button of some sort would be nice.

mainly as an RSS feed. But it is good when you want to tweet and facebook the same thing. Also, its handy for when you just want to check a quick update on statuses, etc.

No. I use Berry Reader for my rss feeds and use Twitter and FB separately. The execution is poor as someone else mentioned. No point in it at this time for me.

I just wonder what percentage of CrackBerry members are even on OS 6 at this point? I'm still rocking 4.6 on my Bold 9000, too stubborn to move to 5 because it seems to be working well enough for me at this point.

Still waiting for a QNX BlackBerry with the 9000 form-factor. Patiently.

Agreed. I'd like to see a poll of how many 9700 Crackberry users have taken the plunge into OS 6.

My 9000 to the 3rd to last latest and good thing I did, you will get better os response and more room for ur weather slot. 4 is not aS fast as 5 and do note its cleaner, better on battery life and for upgrades and since the 9000 will not be getting os6 5 is very good compare to the older version. I'm a person that likes what works and stick to it so you should be more productive and active with a updaTe of os5 don't be scared its worth it. My 9000 don't display the att stuff since the att rom replacement.

I wipe my BB often when I install new OS or Hybrids and RSS, and I haven't found a way to backup my RSS feed yet. This leaves me with re inputing all my RSS feeds AGAIN, to the point I don't bother. when all my feeds are in the device, the RSS feeds are nice to have, otherwise I only use FB and it just becomes redundant to have. I do turn off notifications and only update when I open the app that saves on battery.

Hmm I actually really like social feeds. I would be happy w/ OS5 if it had socialfeeds. I just cant make myself pay for berryreader. or anything like that.

I only use it for FB as far as social networks go. But different RSS feeds on it including CB.com so I really enjoy that part of it. I think it was a much needed feature for BB.

I need more than one Twitter act. As long as they have that restriction, I'll pass. Also, I prefer BerryReader for RSS because it connects to Google Reader. Finally, I won't even touch BB Podcasts because I appreciate the hard work Versatile Monkey put into Podtrapper.

I deleted Social Feeds because it was redundant and I perceived it a battery drain. Then, I got an invite to SocialScope and deleted native FB, FourSquare, and Twitter apps.

SocialFeeds is the main reason why first installed OS6 on my Bold 9700. I just wish it would connect to GoogleReader.

I would use it if it had a 'read' indicator and you could filter by unread only...

social feeds only for bbm and windows live messenger (do not use it much on my bb)... i prefer socialscope for twitter, facebook and foursquare :)

I used to use it sparingly. However, these days I don't use it all, because it has disapeared and I don't know what happened...

I use it to check my facebook and twitter and to update my statuses in one spot instead of having to go to two diffrent apps and type the same thing. I also use it for the rss reader since its free and it works well for my updates on music festivals, sports, crackberry, local news , and financial news. I just disabled the notifications for it so that I don't get something everytime someone post something and I chose when I want the feeds to be refreshed.

The first thing I did and had to do after getting BB Torch 9800, was to delete social feeds. It drained my battery in less than an hour and even customizing the times didn't help. What a waste. Easier, if you use those apps, to have them separately.

  • Reply

joeldf Jan 13, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Don't use it. FB is the only social app I use, so the actual app itself is all I need. I use the news reader for RSS feeds which seemed easier to configure anyway.

I do use Social Feeds, but don't have it active all the time - I tend to close most apps when not using them - so I haven't noticed the battery drain issues. It's great in terms of sharing stuff quickly with anyone on Twitter/Facebook or in my address book.

Having the option to log into the networks directly, have them show up in your message list, read from social feeds and then deal with the  overalerting you...I found more comfort having evrything show up in my message list rather than social feeds. Until the kinda recent release of  RSS feeds, its was the only thing I used it for. I've attempted several times to make better use of it but would always become annoyed or found it redundant.

But only because the .424 leak my facebook Cursor is gone. And instead of losing patience I have adapted to the social feeds feature. Its ok. Would like to loose the Blue bar highlight, other than that its fine at first glance

I never had it on my blackberry bold 9700. Do you have to download it on desktop manager. Perhaps you need to have it check marked as one of the applications to go not your phone. Because from the first os6 leak I got, it was never there. Can someone help me please.

I deleted that app a while ago... Its too extra bs that's not needed... In my own opinion that is. I would rather have the feeds seperated.

3G.BoldBerry Jan 14, 2011 at 12:04 pm

For what rss was created for rss, when compared to twitter it does rss better but twitter I only use for critical alerts but the rss in the bb os torch is sweet and batter drain is no excuse. Like facebook I'm sure folks can tell you everything that's good about it, so why not the good on this feature, well you can set social feeds to only alert you with the availability of new feeds only when you choose to see them which will have the same effect as any other app that runs in the bg and most of all its only when you choose to use it, it will do so. It does what it does right for the most part and reading crackberry in the feeds app is just the same as the site so for a quick run down on what's posted on crackberry this app is nice. Twitter does not display crackberry lists like how social feeds does. I hope it sticks around for in the future.
