Late in 2013 when BlackBerry OS 10.2.1 first leaked we ran a poll asking if you preferred the new style call screen that was coming to BlackBerry 10. The results were not far off 50/50 so I thought we would revisit the question of whether you prefer this latest version now you've had time to get used to it (for those of you that have 10.2.1 at least).

On a personal note, I was happy with the original option we had with BlackBerry 10. I never had issues grabbing the bar and pulling it down to answer a call. However, I do now prefer the redesign which is very much like on Android phones. Having the ability to just slide left or right seems a lot more natural and I'm pretty sure most of you will agree with me.

Of course, it isn't just phone calls where you'll see the new call screen. It also kicks in with BBM so you'll have the same options when you receive either a BBM Voice or Video call.

Hit up the poll below and lets see if the results are higher for the 'yes' option than they were back in November 2013 when we first asked the question.

CrackBerry Asks: Are you happy with the BlackBerry 10.2.1 call screen?

For Z30, or for user with smaller hands, the android design is probably more welcomed. For Z10 or Q10 users, the old design is probably more appealing

Posted via CB10 with Z30 on 10.2.1.2141

I'm not so sure actually. I didn't mind swiping up and down on my Z10. This week however I upgraded to a Z30 and I find it a little awkward swiping my right hand thumb from the middle of the screen all the way left to answer a call. I don't have small hands either. I admit that rejecting a call on the Z30 using the swipe up would be very difficult one handed, so I'm not really sure which is best!

Posted via CB10

I had this "side to side" on my old Galaxy S3... in my humble .... it is better than up/down on my Z30.... maybe someday I will be able to enjoy it if ATT gets off its ass for 10.2.1

Has anyone installed "10.2.1 Leak" on Z30? If so, how?

Thanks

CrackBerry shows you how so just go through the posts. Go ahead and install as I don't understand why you'd be still waiting.

Aka S.Jizzle Z30STA100-5/10.2.1.2141

I used the 10.2.1.2141 Autoloader. I've had zero issues, and it was easy to do. And I'm no computer whiz. I simply followed the instructions. And I was able load all my apps and settings from my Z10 after I loaded the leak.

Posted via CB10

I personally prefer up and down, it's symmetrical. Whichever hand I'm using my thumb travels the same distance

Posted via CB10

Therefore, give us the option!

Why do we have a settings menu? To change things....
And the code for both is already there...

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

I liked to be able to choose which call screen I like, options are good. I was a fan of the swipe down because it was different.

Posted via CB10 using my Zed30 check out my channel @ C00121C1B

Yes I totally agree! It be way better if we had those options to choose from.

Posted via CB10 with my  Z30

I like the option of choosing either one. I like the pull down bar because it was different, as well.

Posted via CB10

The problem I had with the swipe down was that it had such a poor design: it looked like the box was just thrown in as a placeholder for something better. The side-to-side at least looks more polished, but if people want the choice, all the better.

I prefer it to the old one, where you had to swipe down to answer a call. With the old screen I would have to swipe down multiple times before it was detected, causing me to miss several calls. With the current design, swiping to the left is much easier and I never miss a call.

I'd like both, prefer the new side swipe and I would like the option of just tap the green button to answer.

Posted via CB10

I like both too, it would be interesting let's say, if we were on the Z30 browsing in landscape mode and the phone rings, swiping left or right to answer the call in that form might be considerable. When I had the Z10, sliding up or down felt right, but not so much on the Z30; and simply tapping the red or green as the button toggles itself left or right when someone is calling sounds as if that would make sense as well.

It may sound weird, but during the initial video they showed when they announced BB10 the part that got me the most excited minus the keyboard was the call answer screen. Very sad they changed it, wish there was an option to pick.

Z10

I want my old call screen back. This new one looks unpolished.
If BlackBerry wants to use industry standard as the reason why they made the switch then to answer we should be swiping right. I don't care about legacy users or methods. WE jumped on board with bb10 from the get go while your legacy users haven't or are jumping ship (remember that 94% number a dirty carrier in the US boasted about?).
I don't buy the argument the phone is/was too difficult to use so legacy users are not buying the phone. You can't use bad practices, lack of advertising, horrible carrier relationships/training to cover up bad mistakes in the past.
I want my old call screen back. If I wanted a UI which looked unrefined I would have gone else where. I jumped on board with bb10 because it presented features which were cutting edge and unique. This "one hand use" mantra the company keeps preaching so left/right call screen swipes are easier is silly. Majority of people use both hands majority of the time when using phones, tablets, and computers.

*jumping off my soapbox. As you were.

Yep, pulling towards you (right handed) on the new call screen would seem more natural and intuitive. Alas, it is not so.

If you want something, you pull it towards you, not push it away from you.

This is rubbish. And not even Android. At least on my wife's Moto G you have to swipe to the right to answer, and left to decline. SMH...

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

I prefer the old way, but I'm not bothered by the new way.

I do like the look of the new way, so maybe the old way with a little bit of eye candy would be good.

Sachesi.... Look into it. I've been running OS10.2.1 on my Q10 from AT&T since the day it was released in Canada

Posted via CB10 from my amazing Q10

You guys in the US seriously just need to cut the cord on carrier provided updates. We get it, the average consumer isn't on Crackberry and shouldn't have to rely on unofficial or other carrier official OS releases, yada yada yada!

However, if you're commenting within CB articles, then there is absolutely no excuse for not taking the little amount of time it takes to research a preferred update method and going for a 10.2.1 update. Especially now that there are multiple official releases you can choose from, that have already gone through some reputable carrier testing.

Posted via CB10

Do you personally guarantee that they are untampered with, no backdoors, ect.?

Some people want the update from a trusted source only. Vous comprends?

Yes, the phone is designed to only boot a valid OS that has been digitally signed by BlackBerry. If someone tampers with even one bit of data on the OS, the digital signature becomes invalid, and the phone won't boot the OS.

The worse someone could do is mix different versions of some files, like the radio for instance, but even then the files themselves can't be tampered with, it's just a different version that still came from BlackBerry.

Ha ha exactly.

I can't believe how to answer a call is something that some CrackBerrians care about. This and the "Squircle" are two of the most insignificant items of the BB10 (still unfinished) OS.

I mean...it's a simple swipe right and simple swipe left.

I love CrackBerry. We are never happy. We are BlackBerry's best and worst customers.

Posted via CB10

Exactly. I like the new one better but it's crazy how big a deal many BlackBerry users are about this. It's just a damn call screen. Get over it.

Posted via CB10

Hey......Crackberry asked the question......these are the responses!

I for one would like to see BlackBerry give us the option to chose. That way you could cover the majority of people's preferences.

Posted via CB10

Did someone ask what suggestions we would like to see in the CB app? It appears I need me an edit button for my posts :)

Posted via CB10

I have the Android versions of WP Central, iMore and Android Central on my Z10, they work, and DO have an edit button.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Looks wise and nope but it performs much quicker and more accurate than the old one :). Plus I don't care really I just hope visually they can improve it

Posted via CB10

Either way is probably equal in my opinion but i did like being unique. Icrap and androids used the left or right swipe so we had individuality i guess lol.

Posted via CB10

I'm happy with the new call screen. I'm not happy with all the bitching about the old call screen. Some people hate change.

It doesn't really matter to me, even tho I don't even have it yet, but I did like the fact that it was unique before.

Posted via CB10

For whatever reason, on my Z10, it was harder to grab the bar to pull down vertically. Honestly! It would almost take, jiggle under my thumb or finger a little, but a stab or swipe too fast/too slow would leave it in place, not answering my call. I'm not generally touch-screen challenged otherwise, but it was ridiculously frustrating to miss calls because of that. I knew exactly what to do, it just wouldn't respond to my doing it! (Feeling a bit like people who find picture password 'finicky', perhaps.)

I prefer the original call screen. If BlackBerry could put the text response/silence call buttons on that screen somehow, that would be great. The new call screen isnt that horrible but im not a huge fan of it.

Posted via CB10

To silence the old one you touched anywhere on the screen (not the floating bar). Text reply was also there if you set it up and rejected the call you could choose what message you wanted. For those who were so confused on how to use the old screen you reject the call by swiping away from you or by reading the message above the floating bar which told you how to reject the call.

I liked the old way better, but I'm on a Q & I have a short reach.

Posted with my CB-Q10 using the power of " Q "

I find it is a lot easier to answer/ignore one handed now. It's much easier to slide my thumb to one side or the other. Ignore was a pain with the slide up and even the slide down to answer was inconsistent. Sometimes I'd catch it high enough to pull down and other times I wouldn't.

Better than the previous one . With the previous one I often had to swipe down several times to receive call. This one straightaway , rarely fails.

If I ask someone to answer my phone for me, and they don't know what heck is going on...that's a problem. The new Call Screen is intuitive and is on the same line with iOS, Andriod and WP. Picking up the phone should be stupid easy.

That's why the old told you how to answer/reject on the call screen. The bar even moved with green arrows pointing down and red pointing up. the universal colours.

That's right.

I am plagued by this problem every single day. People just don't read anymore. Too much to ask.

(one of my sayings is: "Best kept secret in the computer industry is to actually read what's on the screen" and then do accordingly)

When I first got my Q10, I was surprised how someone could come up with such a genius call screen, and how easy it was to answer, it even gave you instructions right there.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Right!

I actually enjoyed the old Call Screen, but lately I've been on-board with any changes/comprise BlackBerry has been making to make the OS simpler for the general market. We Fan's are just going to have to brace through the next wave of aggressive changes to the brand, until sales pick up. I think we can all be happy that they left a bit Cascades in the Call Screen.

I prefer the original call screen. I can see the advantage of the new screen on the Q series. However, for the Z series there is less reaching to answer a call. I think it should be an option.

Tim Smith from my Z10 on Rogers

I have adjusted to it with little resistance. For the sake of fun, I'd like the option to choose between the two. While the original did have a distinct BlackBerryness to it, I don't mind the new style. Again, option is always nice.

I like the side swipe better than the pull down. I found it more difficult to answer calls with the pull down.

Posted via CB10 with my BlackBerry Z10

i prefer the previous call screen on the all touch devices. its quite unique. i am of the opinion that it should be brought back for the Z10/Z30 devices while the new call screen is much better on the Keyboard devices...i don't want to be another android wanna be

BlackBerry should give us 2 options in the settings, instead of forcing to use android type call screen.

Posted via CB10

We need that option, too.

I just found out, it's even inconsistent (green/red and left/right) across Android devices, LOL.

Moto G and the little burner Galaxy Y (Gingerbread)

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

I didn't think there would be a difference BUT I've found it is much easier to answer the phone now!

I don't like it, but it is easier to use than the older (and better looking) bar. That said, who cares. Once I have my Q20, I'll just need to hit a physical answer button.

Posted via CB10

Its fine. One thing with the call screen though, I cant stand that you cant end the call by swiping up and closing the active frame, which youre so used to doing already but you can only press end call.

Posted via CB10

You're entitled to your opinion and i respect it. But many of us hate the new one and are upset about the change. All we want is the option to choose.

with all honesty, then can give me any call screen they want.. just keep it consistent w/ bbm and etc.
just dont make us make complete circles clockwise to pickup, and counter clockwise to ignore.. :HA:HA:HA

just wondering, what is the next major update due to be unloaded? or what improvements are BB working on

i missed many calls because it was too difficult. People are TOO whiny! Its just a call screen, GET USED TO it. The world is NOT going to end because we have a new lockscreen!

It's a Damn call screen! It's not something that needs so much focus imo,. The first one was different but required more hand motion to answer or hang up, this one is more comfortable to use but either one is fine, I don't think it's worth the time wasted discussing it. There are many more important things that can be discussed, like dark theme hub. Also I don't understand why in the browser the search field is conveniently at the bottom but in the contacts and in the universal search it is at the top. That doesn't flow with the user experience, everything should be consistent!

Posted via CB10

Consistent would have been the old call screen. Like swipe away to reject a call swipe towards to accept. Just like you swipe an app away to minimise close it (reject it).

They should give us the option to use the one we prefer...swipe down is better for me and to me it was original don't know why blackberry want to follow others, set the trend like you used to do

Posted via CB10

We really should have the option to switch back and forth between the classic and new call screen.

Posted via CB10

Download sachesi and update that way. I've had 10.2.1.2141 for a few weeks now on AT&T and it's awesome! Not waiting for AT&T anymore

Posted from my Z or Q10 on AT&T

How did this get so many votes for no?
Are u kidding me?
The new one is soooo much cleaner looking..
Sometimes I think this forum is filled with idiots

Posted via CB10

... who still might be idiots (if you regard them as such), but are also human beings with personal preferences, likes and dislikes, just like you.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

It doesn't make any sense for a right handed person answering the phone with one hand. Swiping your thumb up or down keeps your thumb in an easily accessible area of the screen while the new method is forced. The old method was good for left or right handed people using the phone with one hand. If they are intent on keeping this option give the choice to reverse swipe direction to answer.

I own a Q10 so the experience may differ on a z10/30.

I like the new one because the old way often my Z10 did not respond quickly and I would miss the call. It seemed that sometimes my swipe was not being recognized. I think making a side swipe might be better than just tap the green button. The tap might happen if the phone was not in a case and just in a pocket. The old way was ok when it worked

I like the new call screen but really had no issue with the old one. :D It would be cool if we could get the option for sure

The 1st 1 was original but at times didn't seem like a natural way to go...the current 1 is simple and effective and gets the job done; I'm not sure why u can't just touch the buttons as well to reply!...but really y doesn't the the app of the '#1 BB fan site' not have the dark theme and the ability to edit your posts to start with!! Run a 'poll' on that, the call screen is fine!

Hibby_CB10; Z10STL100-3/10.2.1.1925

You get dark theme on the Q10 automatically . The Z10, yes, has the light theme, which hurts the eyes after a while...

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

I would prefer if they moved to the middle of screen rather than bottom. I find myself cancelling calls as I pull it out of my shirt pocket ...habit of placing device bottom up in pocket.

Is that a Z30...yes, yes it is.

I just want the option to end the call when the call is minimized with virtual call buttons at the bottom of the screen. I have a Z10. Better yet I want virtual call buttons at the bottom of the screen no matter what.

Posted via CB10

Prefer the new version, it's quicker.

I still feel holding a phone with one hand and using the thumb for direction of use, is far far away from being comfortable, as the phone falls out, you loose grip, hence the increase in water damaged phones, a better design is needed.

Posted via CB10

I just love the new call screen It works very well on Z30 as old android user I feel right at home

Posted via CB10

Actually, would be happier with a diagonal swipe.

J/K. I really don't care, but with the new APPL OS7.1 update they all look the same now.

Posted via CB10

NO give me options to CHOOSE! If I wanted the old one let me keep it. If I'm a dinosaur let me choose the new one.

Both are great. For the Q10 the new one is perfect!

Posted via CB10 with my T-Mobile USA (Only T-Mo rep still pushing)  ‎BlackBerry Q10...SON! (Soon to be the almighty Z30!)

I like the new graphics and the shortened swipe, but I would have much prefered if we had to swipe up to answer and down to decline. The movement I use most often (up swipe), which is also the easiest movement to perform, should be applied to the call function I use most often (answering). Swiping up to answer also makes it consistent with other positive functions like unlocking the phone and exiting bedside mode.

The new gesture isn’t a deal breaker for me, but it really is annoying.

If they ever decide to give us an option, they can add that as well while they're at it. ;-)

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Don't mind anymore. If we had choice or be able to define how we pick up the call it would have been perfect.

Posted via CB10

I'm right handed so the process of swiping away from me to answer makes sense but how do left handed folks find it?

Swiping down would work for both left and right handed people.

Surely prefer the old one...it had a class and obviously it was tiger among ol sheeps....
Would prefer the option to choose wich one v wnt...

Posted Via CB10 typing from de awesome keyboard in Q10

Well somehow that made us unique was the way we answered the phone but the new one it's nice too, although the ability to choose and a overhaul on the swiping one that mixed the screen coloring as the new one would be preferable.

"the way I see it there are two types of people, those who spend their lives trying to build their future and those who spend their lives trying to rebuild the past, for too long I've been stuck in between, hidden in the dark locked on a course of destruction...time moves forward and nothing changes" Playbook 32gb, Z10 stl 1001....Im AdicTEN to bb

As much as I liked the original call screen, it was quite inconsistent when I swiped it.

The new call screen has worked consistently for me, so I favour the new call screen.

Posted via CB10 on my BlackBerry Z30

I like the slide left or right I might prefer no slide at all, just a tap red or green button. Sliding is less efficient.

What I do not like is more space is given to tell me my number than the number I am calling.

Posted via CB10

Tapping produces errors and accidentally rejected calls when you pull it out of the pocket.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Nope, like the sliding one!
It was faster and modern ish.
Now it looks like android, and it doesn't make blackberry unique.

Posted Via CB10 Running On Z10STL100-2 Using OS Version 10.2.1.2141

Totally fine with me. Honestly having options for the call screen as some forum members here have opined sounds a bit over the top for me.

Today however I had my Q1O crash for the first time when receiving a call - I first pressed the grey circle to mute the ringing, but then decided to take the call but the swipe to the left didn't work... :( Then I had the missed call pop up but none of its two buttons worked...I locked and unlocked the phone and it was fine though.

Posted via CB10

I like the old call screen better. Can answer any where on the screen. The new one if your thumb is a little higher on the screen it doesn't register. More often than I like, I need to swipe 2X.

Posted via CB10

They should have a choice and I still think that they should have a blackberry symbol in the middle that you move to either side.

Posted via CB10

Prefer the new call screen. Old pull-down screen was too clunky, IMO.

Z10 STL100-1, OS 10.2.1.2141

It's a great call screen for BlackBerry 10

The bar was also cool. What really would be neat is two have both as phone options, but not sure how easy or hard that is for the programmers.

Posted via CB10

It doesn't bother me whether it's swipe left or right, I understand why they did it because of how old Blackberry's use to be.

What REALLY bothers me is the Outgoing Call Screen-
When you set a picture as a contact ID, it cuts off half the picture when you are making a call, and will only show half of the persons face and it looks retarded. But when you receive a call it's fine.

Posted via CB10

Yep, I tried different crops to have a full head but it's impossible to have for both screens

Posted via CB10

I don't know why ppl are complaining about, this change had to be done. You can't slide up or down on a big screen like on the Z30 (unless you have hands like Simon Sage)

It's not bad, but the main issue is the hang up bar. It stretches across the entire screen. Which makes it very easy to hit if I'm using the keypad with one hand. I almost always hang up when I do that.

Confused the hell out of my partner with having a I-phone but love them both would be good if you could choose which to have?

Posted via CB10

Yeah I was totally against it after learning of its similarity to the Google play call screen. Now I quite like and even prefer it after using it for some time.

.2141 what's the difference? .1925 still the bangingest til I know any different.

It's perfect the way it is. If I could modify it I would add a third option to it, in between the answer and ignore red and green id add another option to swipe up and answer in speaker phone mode. That would be ideal for in the car or when lying on my desk.

Th new call screen is soo android. I prefer th old call screen it said BlackBerry hate th fact v need androids help 2 survive

Posted via CB10

I much prefer the old option and wish BB would at least give us the option to use whichever one we like best!
For me it has nothing to do with being resistant to change and EVERYTHING to do with productivity and functionality.
As someone with a short reach, it is nearly impossible for me to swipe the screen horizontally using one thumb. If I have my phone in one hand and am carrying things on my other...I cannot successfully answer a call. My thumbs won't reach!
At least with the swipe up or down to answer, I didn't have to be so precise as to where on the screen I swiped, thus giving me a much better chance of successfully answering the call on the first try.
Options are good!

I prefer the new one on 10.2.1
Old one looked funky.

Best is if we get the option in the future software update.

.....
New one is easier to use.

BlackBerry 10 - Built to keep you moving

I like swiping down or up to answer phone calls. I think that the swiping left or right to answer phone is somehow coping Samsung galaxy

Posted via CB10

I liked the old one. It was very unique. I would like to have the choice as to which one I want to use.

Posted via the super amazing BlackBerry Q10

You know how to take a call and how to reject. Swiping vertically or horizontally hardly matters but yeah horizontal way adds more comfort when you can use your other hand like driving.

Posted via CB10

I think a half screen up and down bar would be fine. But it was a stretch to slide the bar up full screen for me.

Posted via CB10

It works well but so did the original screen, at least for me. I really like the text message aspect when I'm either too busy to answer or really not in the mood to answer a call.

I have to admit having now used the side to side bar, I do prefer it over the up and down.

What I miss from o/s7 is the ability to enable\disenable the ability to make calls even when the lock screen is on. I wish that BB would put this feature back. Having to take off the lock screen to make a call when you are moving through an airport, train station, going from one meeting to another can be a bit of a hassle.

Peace.

What I really love is when the phone is ringing, as soon as the screen detects a touch anywhere, the ringing/vibrating stops. Very cool feature for those embarrassing moments. Does BlackBerry market this awesome feature? No, I bet 90% of us BlackBerry fanatics didn't even know it existed until we figured it out on our own.

I hate the new call screen.. the original call screen was unique in its own way. It feels so android.. the blackberry lost its charm by redoing the call screen...

Posted via CB10

I like the new way better but didn't mind the original way either. I would prefer a simple answer button on the left or don't answer on the right over swiping period.

I had a z10 which used the up and down system to answer calls, then switched to the z30 which still had it, before the update of course, now I answer calls by sliding to the left or right, which I find less attractive and less unique, It would be enough for me if you could at least toggle between those two options, because I can't speak for everyone, only for my opinion

Posted via CB10

I much prefer the new screen. When ignoring or answering a call I would very often need to swipe at least a couple of times. It seems to work for swipe with the new screen.

I could never answer calls easily with the old screen. Very hit and miss the new screen is much better.

Tapping and flicking on my Zed 10

I think the design should be the same as the old one but instead of sliding down on the bar you swipe across like we do now, but on the bar that the old one had.....

I think the original one had a much more modern and unique feel to it, our current one looks like an old old android.

Posted via CB10

Someone at CB has a bee in their bonnet over this an they need to move on. There are so many other aspects of this O/S that we could focus on.

1. The alignment of search bars, put them nearer to our finger tips (middle or bottom of device)
2. Standardizing the UI so that things like "dark theme" aren't broken up by O/S or application component
3. Integrate some features of apps like BeBuzz into the O/S. Why must I buy an app for something the O/S should do by design?
4. Improve the Voice Dialing application so it works without an Internet Connection
5. Improve the Map Application

These are few off the top of my head that I think are more important than the stupid way we swipe to answer the phone.

I like the new one. I can't tell you the number of calls that wasn't answered because I did not flick correctly. With this new setup haven't missed a call yet. Thanks Blackberry! Oh by the way I had to download the new OS through Sachesi to get it on my Q10. No thanks to Verizon!

Posted via CB10

At first I was not happy with the change but now having a Z30 I do like swiping the shorter distance left/right long as I don't forget which direction to reject a call.

Posted Via CB10 Using my Great Z30, PB or Q10

I like the new style; however, I wish I could switch it to slide right to answer and left to hang up!
Being right handed (as the majority are) a swipe to the right is a much easier one handed action using your thumb than swiping to the left. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who answers the majority of my calls. I accidentally swipe right and hang up on people pretty often ;/

Posted via Q10 on CB10

I prefer the original call screen, but the new one is not the end of the world. I wish just wish it didn't look so much like Android.

With the old call screen, I was often missing calls because I didn't swipe correctly or I wouldn't swipe down far enough. Originally I was hoping they would have a virtual version of the classic BlackBerry phone buttons and really didn't like the swipe down to answer function. The new way is a bit closer to that classic way and since getting that feature on my phone, I've yet to have any issues answering my phone.

NO. It is difficult to answer for right handed users. Up down was so much easier.
I guess having a moving center bar would be too much to ask. Then I could make it and the associated coloured dots smaller and move them around to where I want them.

Sent while driving from my Crackberry.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this :/

It's difficult for a right handed person to answer a call one handed!

Posted via Q10 on CB10

Pressing on "enter" or "space" button to pick up, would be an awesome idea for legacy BlackBerry users...
