CrackBerry Podcast 045: CES 2010, BBM Fail Story and More! By Kevin Michaluk | 14 Jan 2010 14:16 |
Project 2010 is in full effect! We said we'd be doing our CrackBerry podcast every two weeks come the new year and we're now officially 1/1! We plan to record every second Thursday at ~11am EST. We figure this a good time - most of the week's BIG news is done, and this way you'll be able to listen on a slow Thursday afternoon or have it for the Thursday/Friday commutes. From time to time we may even record weekly, but at the least you'll be hearing some CrackBerry Radio action twice per month. In this show we recap some of the cool stuff we saw last week in Las Vegas at CES 2010, we touch on the new Curve 8910 and I finally tell the story I tweeted about last week of how a BBM #FAIL nearly ended a 5+ year relationship for me. It's epic. The entire show clocks in at 1h18m, but it's worth the listen! Be sure to drop a comment and tell us how you liked it. One of these days we'll have a great show on our hands :) Big thanks go to the folks at Blue for hooking me up with a new Yeti microphone. They were at ShowStoppers at CES and it turns out they were listeners of the podcast and thought I needed a better microphone and hooked me up. I pretty much just took it out of the box this morning and hooked it up and it's definitely an improvement. Once we get the settings dialed in I'll give it more of a full review. Until then, enjoy the show and we'll see you in two weeks!

Smartphone Experts @ CES2010 - Special Edition Podcast! By Kevin Michaluk | 07 Jan 2010 11:35 |
Since the entire SPE editor team is here at CES in Las Vegas, it made perfect sense to take some time away from ogling gadgets and chatting up our friends in the blogosphere to record a podcast. We talk up what we've seen so far, including the Nexus One, Motorola Backflip and BlackBerry Presenter; we also chatted a bit about what we're hoping to see at Palm's event today. As you might have guessed, the show was recorded and hosted by our pal Mickey Papillon of TCPJ. Give it a listen!

Smartphone Round Robin Podcast Part Deux - Let's Get It On! By Kevin Michaluk | 05 Jan 2010 16:46 |
You may have heard that we're taking a short break from the 3rd annual Smartphone Round Robin for CES this year (and for our own sanity, truth be told.) Lucky for you, we have just the thing to tide you over this week: two podcasts with your favorite editors from the Smartphone Experts Network. First up, this past weekend, as with pretty much every weekend during the Round Robin, The Cell Phone Junkie had a special segment focusing on a specific platform. Last weekend was all about Palm webOS, so go on and give that a listen. It'll warm you up for my final Palm webOS review. This week, though, we have the second podcast we recorded over the course of our time together. We've embedded it below, but honestly: you've subscribed to TCPJ by now, haven't you? How to listen to the Smartphone Round Robin Podcast Part 2:
p.s. My take on Palm webOS (and the Pre and Pixi) and Dieter's take on BlackBerry should hit by tomorrow AM, if you've been waiting. Though Dieter and I are both running ragged with CES prep so if worse comes to worse we'll do an all-nighter tomorrow night and finish up our reviews side by side (hotel room style) as we argue back and forth over beers as to which platform rules supreme. And in case you missed it, head here for the first SPE Round Robin Podcast.

CrackBerry Podcast 044: 2009 End of Year Special Edition Show! By Kevin Michaluk | 31 Dec 2009 13:43 |
There's only one day in the year when you can truly record a year-end show, and that's December 31st. Craig, Adam, Bla1ze and myself jumped on the podcast line for nearly 90 minutes this morning to look back at the year that was 2009. We reflect on some of the highs and lows, work through all the new BlackBerry Smartphones that hit the market over the year with our take on each of them and start looking ahead to BlackBerry in 2010. We also announce the winners of the 2009 CrackBerry Awards live on the air! We'll be posting these to the blogs soon, but if you want first dibs at hearing who won in every BlackBerry category you'll want to tune in. Big thanks for making 2009 such a great year and we'll be back on the air regularly in 2010! Happy New Year!!

Special Edition Podcast: BlackBerry in Europe. Interview with Rory O'Neill and Mike Kirkup of Research in Motion! By Kevin Michaluk | 28 Nov 2009 04:11 |
The 2009 BlackBerry EMEA Alliance Summit is now over and the event once again was a great success. Speaking to many of the alliance members in attendance it was made clear to me that RIM has been listening and is doing their part to ensure those in the business of BlackBerry in the EMEA region are equipped with the tools and knowledge to be successful, and that events like the EMEA Summit help build those vital relationships. Following up on our 2009 Innovation Awards, I caught up with Rory O'Neill and Mike Kirkup of Research in Motion Friday morning for a special edition CrackBerry Podcast. Rory is the Senior Director of Business Marketing in the EMEA region and Mike Kirkup is the Director of Developer Relationships (this is Mike's 3rd CrackBerry Podcast!). THIS IS A MUST LISTEN TO PODCAST for anybody wanting to learn more about BlackBerry in Europe. If you're a developer based in North America trying to conduct business over the pond, you'll want to listen. If you're in the business of BlackBerry and based in the EMEA (Europe - Middle East - Africa) region but are not an alliance member, you'll want to listen also. And for every CrackBerry addict who listens to our shows, you'll defintely want to tune in to get educated. HUGE thanks to Rory and Mike for taking the time to join ous on this one. Enjoy the show!Â

Podcast Episode 043: BlackBerry Storm2 Launch Day By Kevin Michaluk | 28 Oct 2009 20:32 | It has been a busy few weeks in the BlackBerry World, and somehow between all of the stuff going on in the blogs we fell of our podcast routine (yet again). The BlackBerry Storm2 went on sale today, so we took the event as a reason to fire up Skype and get a CrackBerry podcast recorded. With the BlackBerry Developer Conference coming up soon, the month of November should be busy with podcasts and more than make up for the dry spell. Enjoy the show! We were a bit rusty but we managed to get through the big news of the day and then some. Listen to CrackBerry.com Podcast: Episode 043 - BlackBerry Storm2 Launch Day

Podcast: CTIA I.T. & Wireless 2009 Special Edition! By Kevin Michaluk | 09 Oct 2009 16:32 | Podcast time! I've been out in San Diego this week for CTIA I.T. & Wireless 2009, and while the show has been fairly quiet we've still had a pretty good week in the BlackBerry World. The release of BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 was enough to keep all of us addicts happy (plus we know the Storm 2 and Bold 9700 announcements and releases are just around the corner) and we even had a little fun (which is still undergoing) with our BBM 5.0 Stress Test. That said, there was still plenty to talk about in this special edition podcast. Our pal Mickey Papillon from the Cell Phone Junkie hosted the show (he's a Pro), and Dieter and I joined him to go over the highights of the event. Regular CrackBerry Podcast listeners and all smartphone junkies will want to listen to this one. Enjoy the show! Oh yeah, and if the BB alert noise in the first few minutes bugs you, stick with it... we slience it after we "discuss" it. Listen to CrackBerry.com Podcast: Special Edition CTIA IT & Wireless 2009

Podcast Episode 042: It's a Full House! By Kevin Michaluk | 25 Sep 2009 16:50 | Wow. We did it. We recorded another podcast. After going weekly for a few episodes, we fell off for a stretch, but today over lunch we got on Skype and recorded a CrackBerry Podcast. And this wasn't just any podcast... but a very special edition. It took 42 episodes, but today we had a female voice on the show! Big welcome and thanks to Jessica who joined Craig, Bla1ze, Adam and myself. We had a full house of a show, and covered a lot of ground. We caught up on device talk, including some of my hands-on thoughts of the 9550, we worked through some topics tweeted in by listeners, and covered other BlackBerry news of the moment. Take a listen and we'll catch ya again real soon! Listen to CrackBerry.com Podcast: Episode 042 - It's a FULL House!

Podcast Episode 041: Worst CrackBerry Podcast Ever?! By Kevin Michaluk | 27 Aug 2009 11:24 | Well, I'm not really sure that this is the worst CrackBerry Podcast ever, but if not it has to be pretty close. I think we must have jinxed ourselves when we called Episode 040 the Best CrackBerry Podcast Ever. We're a little more disorganized than usual (hard to believe I know!) and there wasn't a whole lot new to talk about since our last podcast was recorded only six days earlier. Our umm.. professionalism even went down the drain a little bit with this episode, so I'll toss up a language warning on this one (we'll be more angelic on episode 042). All self-deprecation aside, we still had some fun as we attempted to work our way through questions tweeted in by listeners and poked fun at Bla1ze for his one week Podcast supension. The other good news is that by hitting rock bottom we spawned some good ideas - I have a feeling our next podcast in two weeks time might be the bestest yet! Try and enjoy the show! :) Listen to CrackBerry.com Podcast: Episode 041 - Worst CrackBerry Podcast Ever?!

Podcast Episode 040: Best CrackBerry Podcast Ever! By Kevin Michaluk | 21 Aug 2009 03:02 | Well, I'm not really sure that this is the best CrackBerry Podcast ever, but with Adam jumping ship on this show in order to spend some time with his family (son's birthday!) I figured I'd rip him a bit by giving Episode 040 an illustrious title like that. Regardless, we had some fun in this episode as Craig, Bla1ze and I add some fuel to the always hot BlackBerry rumor fire (I swear I'm sober on this podcast but listening to it you may have your doubts). After diving into Storm 2 chat, where I throw out my theory of what's going on with the next-gen Storm's display for all to hear (one word - piezo), we cover the tale of two Bold 9700s (different batteries and processors between the onyx and driftwood?) and even drop a new codename... Arrow anybody? From there we work our way through a whole bunch of tweets sent in and cover pretty much everything BlackBerry. It's another long-winded, slightly disfunctional CrackBerry Podcast at its finest. Would it be a CrackBerry podcast if it wasn't? We hope you enjoy! Post a comment if you like what you hear (if you don't like it, we'd rather not know!). :-) Listen to CrackBerry.com Podcast: Episode 040 - Best CrackBerry Podcast Ever!

Podcast Episode 039 - The Three Crackateers are Back! By Kevin Michaluk | 06 Aug 2009 07:50 |
I'm on vacation at the moment, but that didn't stop Craig, Adam and Bla1ze from getting a CrackBerry Podcast recorded. They jumped on the line Wednesday evening to discuss all things BlackBerry. I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, so this description will stay short and sweet... but based on the last show they did without me I'm sure it's great! If you're a BlackBerry addict you know you'll want to be listening to this one. Details below. Big thanks to Craig, Adam and Bla1ze for gettin'r done!

Podcast Episode 038: Emotional BlackBerry Rollercoaster By Kevin Michaluk | 10 Jul 2009 12:24 |
A little late, but better than never. Craig and I jumped on Skype last night and were joined by special guest Marcus Watkins, developer of Podtrapper (which lets you download and listen to podcasts on your BlackBerry) as we chatted about all things CrackBerry-related. As always, we went way too long, went off topic, I talked too much (went on a few long-winded raves and rants) but at the end of the day covered a lot of stuff. Marcus walked us through his story of developing Podtrapper, including the goods and the bads. We got excited for some things, depressed about other things, tossed out a few of the new unconfirmed "codenames" apparently floating around out there (can you say dakota?)... by the end it was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster! You ca listen below. Hopefully you'll enjoy the show. If not, well.. haha.. at least it's free :)

Smartphone Experts Roundtable 5 - Catch Up! By Kevin Michaluk | 25 Jun 2009 15:11 | With the Palm Pre and iPhone 3Gs now on the market, and the BlackBerry Tour rolling out soon (plus Nokia and HTC have some cool stuff happening too by way of the N97 and Hero), we ditched this week's CrackBerry podcast in favor of a Smartphone Experts Round Table. We recorded live on the air last night, but if you didn't tune in you can catch the recording below as Dieter, Rene, Matt and I talk all things smartphone.
