BlackBerry App: ReportAway! for FreshBooks By Ryan Blundell | 09 Feb 2010 12:46 | Freshbooks. If you haven’t heard of Freshbooks before, it’s known as “The Leader of Online Invoicing”. It’s an extremely beneficial business tool, especially for those who are looking for any type of outside sales or field service automation. Unfortunately, not everyone is on board with this type of service and some are still using manual invoices, stacks of paper and other handwritten forms that could become a headache for any accounting department. It’s also a valued option for those who wish to keep track of their team, manage contractors, estimates and, of course, their clients. Now while Freshbooks can be accessed from your BlackBerry smartphone, it isn’t properly formatted for optimal viewing. With those out in the world wanting to carry increasingly smaller devices, they want to be able to only use their smartphones. Freshbooks does have an application that’s currently in beta; I believe it’s waiting for approval for entry into the App World to be precise. I’ll talk about that app in the near future. Right now we’re going to have a look at another option called ReportAway! for Freshbooks, not to be confused with the standard addition of ReportAway! for Quickbooks. The ReportAway! for Freshbooks application will provide you with the benefits of Freshbooks, without tying you to a computer. Read on for more.

Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup Part 4: Openbeak By Adam Zeis | 08 Feb 2010 09:22 | OpenBeak (formerly TwitterBerry) is probably one of the best known Twitter clients for BlackBerry. When Twitter first started its monumental rise, TwitterBerry was one of the few clients available for BlackBerry, and everyone who was jumping on the Twitter wagon got in on the action. New clients began to show up, and TwitterBerry quickly fell to the back of the pack. It didn't totally go away, and now rebranded OpenBeak, it still hopes to capture users with its simple features and ease of use. Take a look at the video above for a quick overview of OpenBeak's features (or lack of) and see how it compares to the other clients in our Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup.

Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup Part 3: TweetGenius By Adam Zeis | 03 Feb 2010 12:28 | So far we've checked out UberTwitter and Seesmic for BlackBerry in our Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup, and now we move along to TweetGenius. The first true "premium Twitter client" for BlackBerry, TweetGenius raised the bar with its smooth UI and animations, as well as its features and ease of use. It caught a lot of flack for being a paid app, but true Twitterholics coughed up the dough and have been loving it ever since. Check out the video for a look at all of the cool features. If you're ready to step it up and want to purchase TweetGenius, head over to tg1.beejive.com.

Review: Pocketday Professional & Personal for BlackBerry By Ryan Blundell | 02 Feb 2010 09:22 | Your BlackBerry provides rapid access to almost anything you can think of. Well for some people, that isn’t good enough! They demand instant access; they want knowledge and they want it now. Now, now, NOW! If you’re picturing adults throwing fits right about now, then we are on the same wavelength. That sort of behavior is kind of immature, if you ask me. On the other hand, there are benefits to being able to look at various types of information at a glance; to see if there is anything important. Yeah, having a grasp of your day from a momentary view of your BlackBerry is a good thing. That’s the kind of access I need - everything available to me now. Now, now, NOW! Before I’m put in a time out, I wanted to have a look through an application called Pocketday. As you can probably tell from my so-called rant, Pocketday provides on-demand access to your content. For those who can’t fight the urge to look at their BlackBerrys, the application will at least keep your potentially inappropriate status check to a minimum. There are two versions of Pocketday available; Professional and Personal. Let’s see which one works best for you.

Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup Part 2: Seesmic for BlackBerry Smartphones By Adam Zeis | 26 Jan 2010 15:05 | The second installment of our Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup brings us to Seesmic for BlackBerry. At this time Seesmic is fairly new to the scene, but it already shows tons of promise and the updates keep coming. It doesn't have an overload of features, but its speed and clean interface make it a strong player. The ability to view timelines, mentions, DMs and even lists add to the fun that is Seesmic. Check out the video above for a quick walkthrough.

Review: amAze GPS for BlackBerry Smartphones By Ryan Blundell | 26 Jan 2010 07:30 | Getting lost – some call it an adventure, others call it an annoyance. There’s even some who call it something that, due to the presence of younger readers, I’m not allowed to repeat. Whatever the case may be, you eventually (and obviously) want to reach your destination, right? I can think of quite a few times where I’ve been ill-prepared before I venture out to a friend’s new place, an appointment or a social gathering and end up lost. Now there’s no need to slap my wrists folks. That was a long, long time ago, before I has a GPS enabled BlackBerry. Who am I kidding, I still forget from time to time! I’m always on the lookout for GPS applications that I haven’t tried yet; I’m not completely attached or committed to one currently. If you’re also looking for something new, or are new to GPS yourself, check out the amAze GPS application. With amAze GPS, you’ll have more than just simple navigation; you have access to weather, local searches, multiple map views, just to name a few. amAze offers both free and subscription services, so you can decide what level you want to be at. Let’s see amAze GPS in action, shall we?

Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup Part 1: Ubertwitter By Adam Zeis | 22 Jan 2010 16:02 | A long time ago (in a land far, far away) we did a quick comparison of all the Twitter clients available for BlackBerry in our BlackBerry Twitter Client Roundup. At the time there were only six available (that we knew of, and some were still in beta) so it wasn't too hard to tackle. Some were just kind of "there" and didn't work all that well, so there were really only a few that stuck out. A few months later we revisited with some new additions in out BlackBerry Twitter Client Roundup Part Deux (where we first saw Ubertwitter) and took another look at all the available clients. Since then, some have come and gone (or were forgotten), some never left beta and some became the top BlackBerry Twitter client. While RIM is brewing their own native Twitter app, there are a number of other great clients, both paid and free, that are worth taking a look at. For part 1 of our Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup we'll take a quick look at Ubertwitter, which seems to be the client of choice for BlackBerry users. I love the layout and feel of the app, as well as the insane amount of features that are packed into it. In addition to the standard timeline, mentions and DMs, Ubertwitter allows you to use multiple accounts, view lists, trending topics, edit your profile and much more. Take a look at the video above to see what Ubertwitter is all about, and check back as we continue to look at all of the other Twitter clients available for BlackBerry in the coming weeks.

Review: PrimeTime2Go on the T-Mobile Bold 9700 By David Boyd | 18 Jan 2010 00:01 | Some of you may remember the review I did of PrimeTime2Go last year. The service has been progressing since last May, and now comes pre-loaded on the T-Mobile Bold 9700. PrimeTime2Go offers over 60 prime time programs, and comes with a carrier billing option on the T-Mobile Bold 9700 for $9.99/month. Unfortunately, there are still very few BlackBerry models supported by the service, but more devices are being added as they can be supported. As of my last review, PrimeTime2Go was still in its infancy, and was experiencing some growing pains. As of this review with the T-Mobile Bold 9700, it seems that they have worked out some of their intial bugs, and made the software more usuable.

Review: BAQ Tracker Mobile for BlackBerry By Ryan Blundell | 12 Jan 2010 10:43 | 13, 846. That’s the estimated number of fatalities that involved impaired driving in 2008 in the United States. That’s roughly 38 deaths daily. For lack of a better term, it’s a sobering thought. It’s a simple decision that could change the lives of many forever, including your own. Now I’m not one to tell you what to do; I leave that up to you and your own judgment. All I’m going to say is if you are planning to drive and you are even slightly questioning yourself, then you should find another way home. Sometimes, that inner, sober voice inside you may have a hard time being heard. The loud music and flashing lights could distract you from the decision at hand. Think of BAQ Tracker mobile application as a megaphone for that inner voice. It’s a discreet and simple way to monitor your alcohol consumption or a loved ones consumption. With real-time representation of your calculated blood alcohol quotient, BAQ Tracker will take the guessing out of the question: “How much is too much?”

Pandora App for BlackBerry A to Z By Adam Zeis | 05 Jan 2010 14:21 | Pandora for BlackBerry was picked as the top streaming media app for BlackBerry in our Best of 2009 Awards, so we figured it would be worth giving it a quick A to Z for those of you who haven't tried it out. Pandora is totally free, and lets you stream custom radio stations to your device. You can create stations right from the app, and tweak them to your liking with Pandora's "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" buttons. The app syncs up with any stations you've created through the web or another device, and gives you a quick and easy way to stream music on the go. This is really a "no frills" app - its does what it needs to with no excessive options or erroneous features. Check out the video above for a look at what Pandora has to offer.

Review: Food Network Canada Mobile App for BlackBerry By Ryan Blundell | 05 Jan 2010 08:09 | The best part of big family dinners is, of course, the food. Admit it or not, we like to see what everyone is bringing, and what to avoid like the plague. I can’t say much for myself; I’m hovering around below average for my cooking skills (my wife can attest to that). Despite the lack of knowledge in the kitchen, I do fully support her adventurous palate. When you are trying to focus on eating healthier, you may initially think that your choices are quite limited. It’s this mindset that may cause you to revert back to your poor eating habits; would you like fries with that? My wife and I started looking for ideas online, in a magazine, or even from peeking in Momma Blundell’s super secret recipe cards/book. That last one runs the risk of the perpetrator getting hit by a wooden spoon. A great source of fun, facts, frustration (still fun for us) and food, is the Food Network and Food Network Canada. Your brain will salivate as much as your mouth will, when you watch the various reality and cooking shows. Canadians can take all of this information with them in a doggy bag with the Food Network Canada Mobile application. More after the chomp, I mean, jump.

Review: Shazam for BlackBerry Smartphones By Ryan Blundell | 30 Dec 2009 08:43 | Some of my favourite songs and artists were discovered by accident. Whether a song was heard while passing by a store or used in a movie, some songs instantly find a way to connect to you. All it takes is a simple beat, a line or a snippet of the melody and you find yourself in a determined mindset, bent on discovering what you have just heard. You may find some success in using a line or two while searching online, but other than that, you'll have to ask around. Then again, you might be too shy or embarrassed to start a beat way off key, almost cracking glass, to ask someone: "What's the name of the song that goes ba da da dum dee da…?" Some carriers, like Rogers Wireless, used to offer a service where they would find the artist/song in question for you and send it to you via SMS. For Rogers, the service was called #DJ. To be honest, I used the service only once…maybe twice. To find true musical discoveries, you only need to utter the one word that a handful of characters like Gomer Pyle and Billy Batson have wielded - Shazam. There's no magic lighting required though it would be pretty cool. The only magic present is what information you may uncover.

Review: Ascendo DataVault v4.5.3 By Ryan Blundell | 23 Dec 2009 09:23 | There's nothing like discovering you have a "compromised" card while in line, trying to purchase groceries or gifts. It's both embarrassing and worrisome. The mind may wander, as you begin to wonder what else has been compromised. Not everyone can remember dozens of passwords; some may stick to less than half a dozen. Think about it: you have email accounts, work logins, multiple social network accounts, banking information, wireless accounts, even your CrackBerry account! Perhaps you, yes you, use a single password, the ONE password...to rule them all! Um, actually, that's not the best idea. What you need is a powerful and organized way to manage everything that is for your eyes only.
Marc from Ascendo Inc has been in contact, letting me know about the updates made a little while ago to their password manager, DataVault. You may recognize the name from a review I did back in 2008. To meet with the demand of the customer, Ascendo Inc has worked quite hard to enhance upon an already impressive password manager. That being said, let's take a look what the newest version of Ascendo DataVault has to offer.

Mobile Checkbook 4.0: Review and Giveaway! By Ryan Blundell | 18 Dec 2009 14:22 | These days, you wonder where your paycheck has gone. I'm not only talking about monthly bills, but also special purchases, such as shopping for the holidays. Has everyone finished their holiday shopping? If you answered no, I have two things to say to you; Stop talking to yourself and stop reading so you can go out and buy something. No! Wait! Maybe you should have a read, as this application may help out. In December, you can always feel the energy in the air as the masses hit the malls and shops to stock up on supplies, food and presents. Receipts pile up or stuffed in pockets. You either use online or telephone banking to check your balances. You keep buying things for yourself, rather than for others. These are just added stresses for this time of year. Mobile Checkbook, which was updated just recently, allows you to easily record transactions on the go, as well as perform reconciliation of your balances. I've wanted to review this application for months, but was asked to hold off until the new version was released. I had the chance to try out this version for the past couple of weeks and I can say it was well worth the wait.

Nimbuzz for BlackBerry Smartphones - Join Mobile Freedom! By Ryan Blundell | 11 Dec 2009 16:29 | It seems as though the need for availability and connectivity is becoming increasingly important. This is true in both personal and professional lives. How do you keep connected to the people you know? Are you constantly on Yahoo! Messenger? How about living on Facebook or MySpace? You're probably chatting away on Google Talk or even using Skype. Whatever you decide to help you stay in touch and on top of the latest, you also want to try and keep things simple and organized. The last thing you want to do is find yourself tripping over multiple applications. If you're looking to incorporate a multi-community mobile social messenger into your communication carousel, Nimbuzz will help you stay in touch with everyone from one place. No switching between programs, no confusion as to who is using what. It's simplified socializing by swiftly shootin' the sh-um...poop in smartphone style (how's that for alliteration?). The social butterfly in you is just dying to read more, isn't it?
