Evernote for the BlackBerry PlayBook

We here at CrackBerry use Evernote quite a bit, and we know that many of our readers do as well. While the app is available for both BlackBerry smartphones and the BlackBerry PlayBook, it is pretty well known that since PlayBook OS 2.0 was released, that version of the app has serious issues that makes it virtually unusable on the tablet, which is disappointing to say the least. There appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel though, as Evernote took to their blog earlier this week to update PlayBook users on the progress of the updated version.

Photo Editing PlayBook

Often times you may find yourself wanting to edit some images on your BlackBerry PlayBook. While there is a small seleciton of apps available, as forums member edyb pointed out, there are also plenty of free online editors that work great on the PlayBook. In my experience the best is pixlr.com, but there are others that appeal to different users as well. Keep reading for the full list, then play around a bit with each to see which you like best (let us know in the comments). Be sure to hit up the forums and let us know which one is your favorite.

Sexy Screen BlackBerry PlayBook

I guess Kevin really is getting older. Not to take anything away from him giving away his Porsche Design BlackBerry, in the past on his birthday he used to crank out some ***fun*** posts. But since he is now getting older and wiser (and recently got engaged!), I figured this year I'd take the heat and spice things up.

And as a suitable replacement -- I found an app that fits the bill. Sexy Screen is a simple PlayBook app that puts the lovely Andrea on your screen and also gives you a set of useful widgets. The app includes weather, clock, time & date and a news ticker - all displayed right on the screen and just a tap away. Sexy Screen features exclusive pictures (taken just for this app) and is $1.99 in BlackBerry App World. Go buy it ... you know you want to.

ReadOnTouch Pro v2.0

Just last week I took the time to review a new application for the BlackBerry PlayBook called ReadOnTouch Pro. Now at the time the application had a few missing features like landscape view and the ability to view images in the articles you’ve saved. But do not fret, ReadOnTouch Pro has been updated to version 2.0. The developer of ReadOnTouch Pro reached out to me and let me know a few things about the app and working with the BlackBerry platform. One was that he had had more downloads since it was featured on CrackBerry then its entire time on the WebOS platform, and second that the latest update is available and fixes a lot of the issues I pointed out in the review.

V2.0 Change log

  • Added: finally Images are available in article view!
  • added: special fullscreen mode: tap twice on the article-view to hide/unhide the toolbars!
  • added: portrait mode
  • added: scrollbar for article-view
  • added: new serif font: bbalpha sans
  • added: highlighting of search results in article list
  • added: ability to logout from current account
  • added: create new account from within the app changed: searchbox borders, now integrates seamlessly in article list
  • bugfix: no more accidently selecting article during scroll in article-list
  • and some other bugfixes

If you haven't tried ReadOnTouch Pro it is an application that allows you to save online articles for reading offline later. The application uses the Pocket service to give you the ability to click a bookmark on your computer browser and to immediately have that article sent to your BlackBerry PlayBook.

Sometimes I’m just amazed at the CrackBerry community. We are all downloading apps that are useful to us, and at the same time helping developers reach their goals and realize that the BlackBerry platform is where the potential is. If you haven’t had a chance to read the full review of ReadOnTouch Pro, you can do so here. ReadOnTouch Pro is available in BlackBerry App World and is currently priced at $1.99.

TopGear for BlackBerry

BBC Worldwide has developed an application for the hit show Top Gear and it's now available on the BlackBerry platform. Top Gear – News is available on the BlackBerry PlayBook as well as BlackBerry smartphones. The application has been designed to allow fans to keep connected when they missed an episode and between episodes. The application features latest news updates, Top Gear opinions, videos, and a whole lot more.

Features:

  • All the latest news, rants and opinions from Top Gear
  • Videos and photo galleries
  • Behind the scenes exclusives from the team
  • Your favorite clips from the Top Gear show
  • Previews of upcoming Top Gear stuff
  • The latest cars driven and reviewed

From within the application you are able to read the latest articles and share them with your BBM contacts. Of course if they do not have the app they will be prompted to download it to read the post. Along with BBM integration you can also share via FaceBook, Twitter, and email.

Of course, the Playbook doesn’t have BBM connected capabilities, but its version still offers a lot of the same features you would find on the phones. The benefit to using Top Gear on the PlayBook is that you will have a larger screen to watch the video clips. Top Gear on your smartphone is perfect for portability, it isn’t the best for viewing video. If you have both a BlackBerry smartphone and tablet I would highly recommend downloading the application on both. With the app on both you’ll never be out of date on the newest from Audi, BMW, or Porsche.

If you have not watched Top Gear and have a thing for cars I suggest you download the app, and check your local listings for availability.

Angry Birds Space

Though just released for the BlackBerry PlayBook a little over 2 weeks ago, Angry Birds Space has already received an update. Version 1.1 adds a new level called Fry Me To the Moon which will be a welcome addition for those of us that have already played through the first 2 levels. This update also includes a couple of minor changes to the layout of the menu, namely rearranging the planets and unveiling a bit more of the teaser image marked "Coming Soon".

Rumor has it that maybe the Simpsons will somehow tie into a new Angry Birds game, and we can't help but think of Homer when we see that pink frosted donut poking out of the brown wrapper in that teaser image. What do you guys think? Coincidence, or a fairly obvious hint? Let us know in the comments below, and if you don't already have Angry Birds Space on your PlayBook, you can grab it at the link below for just $2.99. Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

Cloud storage is all the rage. On the surface, it seems like PlayBook owners have been left out in the cold. When we look closely, however, we can see that it is easy and powerful to manage all our cloud storage needs right from the PlayBook.

Using Dropbox, Box.net, Google Drive and SkyDrive on the BlackBerry PlayBook

We know that we need more native apps for our beloved PlayBooks. We also know (even more so after BlackBerry World 2012) the BlackBerrys are for people who need to get stuff done. In today's world - no matter what business you are in - getting stuff done means having access to cloud storage.

For some platforms, there is an app for everything - including cloud storage. Our sister site (iMore) ran a great article on all the available apps for cloud storage on iOS, and it is worth a read.  For us PlayBook owners, we need to get a bit more creative. The good news, however, is that we can access all major cloud storage services on our PlayBook as easily and as effectively as any other platform...we just need to work a bit harder at it!

Taptu

In February, Bla1ze let everyone one know about Taptu, which allows users to “DJ their news” in a sense. This news reader application not only gives you access to a plethora of news sources, but does so brilliantly by giving you the means to tweak and add your favourite content via personalized streams. I’ve only recently started using Taptu on my BlackBerry PlayBook, but it rapidly became my go to source for the news I want; it was dead simple to use and incredibly quick in adapting to my interests. As quickly as my interests can change, so can my view – I can mix it and share it with friends on Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook from within Taptu quite easily. A short while ago, Taptu had updated their PlayBook application to include some amazing features to make accessing, and managing, your favourite feeds even easier.

  • User accounts that let you set up your streams on any device and have them automatically populate on another iOS, PlayBook or Android Device. No need to register with Taptu, your user account just requires you login to your Google, Facebook, Twitter or Linked in account.
  • Articles you bookmark also populate across devices.
  • Articles read on one device are marked as read in real-time on all other accounts.
  • Updated UI that shows articles as stacks of cards when there are related sources- giving multiple points of view on a topic.
  • Improved search streams, giving more control to take any search term and turn it into a stream of news.
  • App now available in Spanish, French and German.
  • Partnership with Readability makes sure that the text is easier than ever to read.

If you’re using multiple platforms, you’ll definitely appreciate the efficiency of real-time synchronization across the board. No reason to waste time with articles you’ve already read is there? You can grab Taptu for free from BlackBerry App World. Press release for the update can be found after the jump.
