Compass Lite is a cool app for the navigator in you. The "ancient mariner" style compass uses the device GPS to show your speed, line of travel, latitude and longitude. If you are a camper or hiker who wants to toss that old plastic compass and step it up to the next level, this is for you. The bold graphics and easy to read fonts are great for everyone, and the app couldn't be easier to use. There is also an arrow that will always show True North while using the application. Compass Lite has only a few features of the full version of Compass, which is due for the Tour in a few months. Users who purchase Compass Lite will receive a discount if they decide to upgrade. Check out Compass Lite in the CrackBerry App Store for only $0.99.

First!
no love for the 8900? i'd like to own this app =/
That would be sweet on any Blackberry device!!
This for my (now ancient) 8330
just got the app. it's not that impressive. the compass doesn't move smoothly like a real compass, just updates the direction with a new image every few seconds.

There is absolutely no way that this application on a blackberry would replace a real compass. This is simply a novelty (including the full version). No serious backpacker or hiker who relies on a compass for navigation would use this as their primary source.
In fact, not even a full fledged GPS unit is a replacement for map and compass.
Please don't make statements in which you obviously have no experience.
Since this relies on GPS, it will not always point to true north. When you are stationary, the GPS satellites can't distinguish in which direction the GPS device is pointed. This renders Compass Lite useless.
A real compass uses the magnetic field of the Earth and works even when you are stationary. The iPhone has a magnetometer which will make it more accurate for its compass app. But, I wouldn't rely on that either.
I agree with Dabrador, it (along with GPS devices) is not a replacement for a real compass and map.
And when your battery goes dead????? Throw away my compass? I hike a lot, what happens if there is no coverage or my battery dies. You guys gonna come rescue me? What really bad, bad, bad advice. As a backup, great, but throw away my compass??????????????
