Now that the BlackBerry Playbook is out in the open, we're all waiting for more. We know the specs are insane and that it will run Adobe Air and Flash (among other things) but from there on out we're in the dark. We want to know more (don't we always) like what specific apps it will run and what other fun stuff it will do -- did anyone else spot Tweet Deck in there??. We decided to break down the BlackBerry Playbook promo video with our thoughts on what the PlayBook will do, what apps it will run and more. Keep reading for our full examination.

BlackBerry PlayBook Breakdown

First off a recap of the specifications we already know:

  • Video playback: 1080p HD Video, H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV
  • Audio playback: MP3, AAC, WMA
  • HDMI video output
  • Wi-Fi - 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Connectors: microHDMI, microUSB, charging contacts
  • Open, flexible application platform with support for WebKit/HTML-5, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, POSIX, OpenGL, Java
  • Ultra thin and portable:
    • Measures 5.1"x7.6"x0.4" (130mm x 193mm x 10mm)
    • Weighs less than a pound (approximately 0.9 lb or 400g)
  • Additional features and specifications of the BlackBerry PlayBook will be shared on or before the date this product is launched in retail outlets.

We also know (from seeing the PlayBook live and in color) that there is something else on the front of the device that could be either an LED or maybe some sort of proximity sensor. There are a few ports for USB and HDMI as well as media buttons on the side. We also know some bits and pieces like the fact that you will be able to use the HDMI out port to view video on an external device and view something totally different on the PlayBook at the same time. Great for things like presentations where you can show something on a large screen, and view your notes right on the PlayBook.

So lets get going and tear this video up and find out what will make the PlayBook do its thing.

0:10 - Obviously the PlayBook will be amplified, and who doesn't love amplified? The PlayBook will offer an "amplified view of what's already on your BlackBerry"

0:23 - Here we see the start of some multitasking. It looks almost like a webOS-esque card style switcher. The open apps (?) are shown on top while the standard app icons are down the bottom.

0:28 - Photos galore. What is cooler than browsing all your photos on the PlayBook?

0:35 - Here we have a little camera action complete with a giant viewfinder.

0:41 - Easily swap between still camera and video camera. Recording time for video shows on the screen.

0:45 - When video recording is done, you have the ability to playback the video or delete the clip.

0:46 - Of course you can rock out YouTube with the Flash support.

0:49 - More multitasking goodness. Here we get the first real look at the layout of the PlayBook screen. Indicators up top for messages, music(?), signal strength, Bluetooth, battery and search. Again we see the card view layout of open apps with application icons down below. Apps we can see are the standard calendar, camera, pictures, video, music as well as Facebook and YouTube (which could just be open websites). There is also Tweet Deck (thanks to Adobe Air?) and Messager (I know it sounds weird but that's totally how it looks to be speeled) - which could be some sort of BBM or it could just be standard IM apps like Google Talk and AIM. There also seems to be a navigation bar for views of All, Games, Media, Social and Favorites.

0:55 - The media app looks very cool with layout of all of your album art.

0:57 - Tap an album and the player starts up. Album art on the left with track listing on the right. The play, skip and stop buttons are on the bottom along with track time and shuffle/repeat button.

1:05 - First glimpse of two-way video calling. Plain and simple layout with End and mute buttons on the bottom of the screen.

1:07 - Full QWERTY keyboard looks big enough to handle fat fingers.

1:14 - Some action in the web browser showing off tabs and more Flash love.

1:22 - A quick look at what is most likey the Kobo reader that will be launching on the PlayBook.

1:27 - "App Rocking" with some Twitter and YouTube love as well as what could be the PlayBook's app store?

1:32 - From here we see the calendar on the PlayBook, but also notice the device to the right. The two look to be in sync (device pairing) as we scroll through the calendar, contacts and that messager app that looks a lot more like BBM in this shot.

1:48 - We wind down with a quick recap of features as well as a bit of a look at the overall device.

Between the awesome specs and the new QNX operating system the BlackBerry PlayBook is shaping up to be quite a device and more so a user experience. With so many ways to create apps for the PlayBook, including Adobe Air and Flash, we should see a plethora of apps hit quick. Hopefully RIM will make the PlayBook SDK available early so we have loads of apps to play with at launch. I for one can't wait to see what amazing stuff gets churned out for this new device and definitely can't wait to get my hands on one!

Real nice I need 1.

Riders On The Storm

This is neat and all... but this is a promo video. When there is a hands on, actual device, we'll know what it can do. Right now these are all simulated images and the last simulated images I saw were on the Storm. They were not very accurate of the phone's true capabilities.

I Looked At Your Name... ahahaha

I want this thing soooo bad! adobe Air and Flash, lots of apps, device sharing, a camera on the front and in back, QNX operating system.....I want it now!

Who picks the music for these commercials? Being from Canada they should throw some Rush in there or Nickelback! Still buying one though!

quik4life

The song in the preview video is called "Where I'm Going" by an Australian group called Cut Copy. RIM couldn't have picked a better song to promote the PlayBook.

I think the music for the OS6 had a line 2000 and late :) Sorry had to say it. Actually I love my torch and OS6 but you gotta think their might have been some raw Canadian humor in that choice.

I also loved the torch intro song, although I'm not so enamored with the yelling at the end of the current Torch ads on TV Diplo must have insisted they not use it on his ad.

I agree this was a very good choice for the Playbook vid.

With expandable memory slots I doubt this tablet will even need to come out in various sizes considering the price jump between the different Ipads are much more than buying larger SD cards.

Crossing fingers that hardware will be enough to run the software smoothly (arguably RIM's biggest set-back since the first Storm ), but with the dual-core processor I have very high hopes!

Now the concern becomes battery life, multitasking and dual-core processors do not lend themselves to long battery life. That's the most important thing if I were to switch from my iPad.

i really want one but what im dying to find out is if it has a usb slot for usb drive or a sd slot for sd card/ Id like to be able to store things on something external rather than all on the device itself.

Specs looks great but like every other eco system you need apps, apps, apps!

Any ideas on which BB will work the best with the Playbook? I know we dont know a whole lot but just a question to see what everyone thinks.

KOMO

Why would a certain BB work the best with the playbook? The operating system is what really matters and with that said, I would imagine that it would support both OS5 & OS6 devices.

sufan

If they could port this down to a phone that can compete with iphones and androids but have all the great messaging, calendar and contact apps with integrated menues, a phone with this OS and the right hardware would be awesome.

Thanks for the breakdown I can't wait to get one. You guys at crackberry are the best.

The Playbook is really shaping up to be an amazing product. The specifications, the ones we know so far, are very impressive and the competition doesn't even come close. Well, maybe with screen size. There are several ways to create applications such as Webworks, Flash, Air, and Java. I plan on getting a Playbook as soon as it is available for pre-order. I want pricing and release date information.

You're basing this on a promo video? I hate to disappoint you but this is not good journalism and faking flying windows using flash is easily done these days. Apple did the same thing with the iPad when they had a video of a guy browsing NY Times with flash playing. Turned out to be an overlay.

I want that BBM on the Torch. How do I get my screen to look like that?

First, I expect the BB Playbook to be WIFI capable and connect to any BB via BT or USB. The main question I have is,...will one be able to access the web via their BB connect be it BT or USB?

Side Note: My gf won an iPad and I took the liberty to set it up and have been toying with it for the last 4 days. There is a work around that one can use to enable you to BT tether an iPad to a BB and access the web.

In addition, since being on Win 7, I have ConnectiFy active and I'm able to access the web via my PC-to-BB BT connection. I'm also able to access the web with the iPad via the BB-BT-ConnectiFy Connection. Therefore, I don't need to be in a Wifi environment to access the web with the iPad,...but do have the have my PC online, etc, etc.

Lastly, many aware of the numerous Win 7 phones coming on the market,...if they have the ability to run ConnectiFy,...one can acutally get around the data plan. That is, if a data plan isn't mandated with Win 7 phones.

Fysa,...ConnectiFy creates a virtual HotSpot via your PC,...others can access the web through your PC's web connection. Works great!!

I have seen small mentions (not above) on how much internal memory the playbook holds. That will be key. In terms of storing photos, videos, music. I have seen/heard 32gigs, which is decent sized, although 64g or 128g would really be great, but any wind of flash cards or can this load usb drives? Bottom line a lot of these features seem great, but how much data can I play with while I am using them. Anybody with answers ? Thanks
