OK. This just got weird. Following up on the Rogers BlackBerry KickStart pics from earlier today, our buds at BlackBerry Cool just posted the photo below which shows the new BlackBerry flip phone (on Rogers at least) is borrowing its candybar-style sibling's name and apparently will hit the market as the BlackBerry PEARL 8220. Could be this final branding decision was made when the model changed from 91xx to 82xx. Take a read through the text below for more details... I couldn't help but laugh at the reference to "Data virgin entrants" :)

Rogers 8220 Smartphone

This magical Rogers book DOES have some BlackBerry Bold stuff in it too. Nothing new information wise, but it's still worth taking a look at the images after the jump!

Kevin, my brain hurts.... :O(

yeah, Mine too.. i've got one sitting in my hands right now. for some reason i liked it better when it was called the KickStart. i just lost a little bit of love for it now that i am thinking of it as a pearl 8220.

Wonder if the "textbook" includes a chapter on the Bold?

I can see it now....

"Introducing the Blackberry 9000: A phone released only to celebrities, foreign countries, and carriers not named AT&T"

Kevin Michaluk

just added that chapter to the post.

seems like you all were in denial...was this ever REALLY anything more than a flip style pearl with its silly sure-type keyboard? come on!!

oh well...

There is an obvious error on the data sheet. They list the 8820 as having 4.5 but the 8310 as having 4.3 (clearly both should be 4.5 and 4.3 was never released for the 8310).

ScottMB

It looks nothing like the Pearl. :(

Every piece of information that I get on the new bold makes me that much more happy I'm waiting for it.

I would like the kickstart but I'm not a huge fan of the suretype keyboard. Other than that it would be sweet.

joepocky

Think of the phone as an Oyster. Crack open the oyster and what do ya see? A Pearl :)

TheSultan

Maybe this means it will be replacing the Pearl as we know it, and what people have now as a Pearl, will soon go the way of the dinosaurs. I think it's a great looking flip and would go that way if I didn't dislike the keyboard so much!

jeversion1

Granted I dont agree with naming the kickstart that. actually i dont even like the name kickstart. but since it does have the pearl suretype keyboard I could see how they would want to keep the recognition as that. too bad i also people who arent smart saying they have a pearl and not knowing that there are the other incarnation of the pearl ie. the cdma pearl and the wifi pearl and such. i still vote for kickstart over pearl. maybe thats because i would never want this one lol.

Hey all,

is that new phone to replace the pearl? I am really hope not! I like my pearl alot!!

WOW....whoever took those pics is so dead if someone finds out...I have the Q3 Rogers Book at my store, and I wouldnt dare risk my job for that!

baykine

i wouldn't be surprised if they called it the pearl. i have to admit that i like the style of the kickstart but i haven't been a flip phone fan since i had my moto razr years ago. whether or not they call it the kickstart or the new pearl, this phone is going to sell and sell a lot! the kids are going to love this phone, especially at the price that they are rumored at. last thing...i thought the calling it the "oyster" comment was pretty funny and would actually make a lot of sense too.

They are riding the name on the success of the pearl line. Looks smart to me. The last thing they need is another name to add more confusion among shoppers. They can present the Pearl now as candybar phone or flip phone. I am sure other things like the javelin, will probably be renamed to Curve, or Curve 2. I think the only names they will add are Bold and Thunder/Storm/Hurricane/Typhoon/Lightning/Flood/Blizzard/Scud/Pressure/Depression/Meso/cyclone/twister/ whatever weather term they opt to call it this week.

That data sheet is wrong in everything I think. If they call this thing the pearl then they're freaking stupid. I was going to get this phone for my Dad but if they name it something that stupid I'm not getting it. That'd be like calling the javelin the curve 9200 or something stupid. I don't think rims that dumb. Maybe rogers is at fault.

Naming it Pearl is like submitting the same post 5 times...

cinnamin

in a way it makes sense this is a flip phone (clam shell) design what do calms give us over time pearls just my two cents.

At a meeting inside rogers this week I got a little first hand information which confirms this, the kickstart will infact launch as the Peal 8220, and its not far out, we should be seeing it on shelves VERY soon, and likely at a $50 price point on a 3yr term (voice and data) Also we have a confrimed date for the bold (as confirmed as one can be anyway) of August 19th but whats even more amaizing is they are actually trying very hard to position it at the 199 price point. iPhone what?

jontrane

Inside source at RIM has told me Kickstart is going through 3rd round of BETA to fix some problems and if successful will push the release. Also, they plan to release a Curve 2.0 with a higher resolution screen, better camera, O.S 4.6, and many other upgrades however will not run on 3G.

markymarks50

Wanted to give the latest BB news. T-Mobile will launch the kickstart, now being called the 'London' in september. It will come in black and red. T-Mobile also confirmed the delay of the Bold until January because all T-Mobile phones must now be usable with the 'T-Mobile at home' feature. This was news to RIM so they have to remake a version just for T-Mo.

Blogberry

I hotlinked one of your pics of the Pearl 8220 manual in my blog. If this is not ok for you please tell me!

By the way, great site with really good information and styling.

What will my old pearl be called again? I just don't see where that question was answered. I love this old pearl and think the SureType is kool. It is just like the phone I had overseas for the past year or so.

A. Get over it. It's a Pearl inside of a clamshell (uhh... no pun was intended there). I can take apart my iPod and shoehorn into a different casing... it's still a dang ipod. It even has the same keyboard and what not. It's simply Pearl ver 2.0

B. This is the ugliest damn Blackberry to date. It's not even pretty for a flip phone.

C. Entry level Blackberry = kids and moms. Have fun!

having been with this phone for a while i was hesitant to use it but the truth is as a cell phone.... not a data phone it works quite well. just flip it open and it answers the call. now how cool is that? plus the fact that i have cliped this phone on the pocket of my jeans and my polo it makes for a cool fashion statement. and the front is just really nice although the back does leave something to be wanted with
the funny thing is i have been trying to find that find me option on the maps but still dont have it. this is good to go in my opinion expect this in the next couple of weeks as a entry line fashion phone.... that just happens to be a blackberry being backed up by the blackberry infrastructure ;)

Janye

I said it, I said it, and I said it again and now I think I jinxed myself. I prayed that this kickstart would not be the "new" pearls. I dislike flip phones and I am not going to be pleased if I have to get a larger phone to have the candybar style.

DO YOU HEAR ME RIM !!! :( *dies a little inside*

Dan pearl user

Look at the kickstart and then the pearl....the only difference is the flip-top. Why is everyone in such retardedness about it?
