As if all the other BlackBerry related news wasn't enough to get excited over, there is a another piece of great news coming out of Waterloo today. Each year products are submitted to win the Red Dot Award in over 19 different categories and this years entries reached nearly 5,000.
From that list of entries, the jury of 37 members pick the best of the best in each category and this year, the BlackBerry Z10 has taken the Red Dot Award for Product Design 2013.
"The BlackBerry Design Team is honored to have been awarded the prestigious red dot award: product design 2013 for the BlackBerry Z10," said Todd Wood, Senior Vice President of Design at BlackBerry. "I am extremely proud of our world class design organization and look forward to bringing our customers more BlackBerry 10 products in the future.”
The Red Dot Award is recognised worldwide and is one of the most sought-after quality marks for excellent design. So, with that being said a huge congrats goes out to the BlackBerry Design Team on the recognition. If you're looking for more details, you can jump below to read on through the full press release.
Press Release
The BlackBerry Z10 is Awarded for High Design Quality in the “Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013
Waterloo, ON - The innovative power of BlackBerry impressed the 37-member jury of experts for the “red dot award: product design 2013”. Those who succeed in winning over the renowned experts in the field can decorate their product creation with the “red dot” and position themselves at an international level. The jury members were delighted to receive 4,662 entries in 19 different categories in this year’s competition. Only the best designs were able to win the enthusiasm of the jury, which is how the BlackBerry® Z10 smartphone received the red dot for its successful design creation.
The awards ceremony for the seal of quality that is recognised worldwide takes place on 1 July 2013 as part of the traditional red dot gala. The ceremony – held in Essen’s opera house, the impressive Aalto Theater – is always the final highlight of the “red dot award: product design” and over the past years has become established as a celebratory ceremony with international guests. The BlackBerry Z10 will then be put on display during a four-week special exhibition in the red dot design museum.
The BlackBerry Z10 is the first smartphone powered by BlackBerry® 10, the re-designed, re-engineered, and re-invented BlackBerry platform that creates a new and unique mobile computing experience. The BlackBerry Z10 offers a seamless fusion of hardware and interface into one design, resulting in a quieter, understated hardware design, which simply and elegantly frames the BlackBerry 10 experience.
Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the red dot, has pointed out that strong design competence and economic success nowadays go hand in hand: “The winners of the ‘red dot award: product design 2013’ are the protagonists of a highly developed design culture and design industry. These days it is becoming more and more difficult to distinguish between well-designed products. It is often only in the details that the special qualities become apparent. However, those product creations that pass the test before the critical eyes of the international red dot jury will not disappear into the crowd and will be able to fend off global competition.”
The winning products in the Red Dot Design Museum
With around 2,000 products spread over an area of more than 4,000 square meters, the red dot design museum houses the largest exhibition of contemporary design worldwide. From 2 to 28 July 2013, the museum will host the traditional special exhibition of the award-winning products. In “Design on stage – winner’s red dot award: product design 2013”, design enthusiasts can marvel at the latest trends at close quarters. Visitors are expressly invited to handle the pieces, allowing them to experience live in the breathtaking atmosphere of the red dot design museum the prize-winning design of the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone from BlackBerry.
The Red Dot Design Award
With the red dot design award, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen created one of the most internationally acclaimed competitions. The prize, the “red dot”, has established itself worldwide as one of the most sought-after quality marks for excellent design. The Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen displays the award-winning products in the red dot design museum for at least one year.
In order to appraise the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the red dot design award breaks down into different disciplines: the “red dot award: product design”, “red dot award: communication design” and “red dot award: design concept”.

echo5-7 Mar 13, 2013 at 5:05 pm
the Red Dot design award is not worth a penny. it was thrown out of most of the relevant creative rankings.
hpjrt Mar 13, 2013 at 6:05 pm
I don't think anyone said that the award had any monetary value in and of itself. Otherwise, who pi**ed in your corn flakes this morning?
tw_ Mar 13, 2013 at 8:11 pm
Which ones are the relevant creative rankings and relevant to whom?
BruvvaPete2 Mar 13, 2013 at 11:45 pm
You get the award for downer of the week.
echo5-7 Mar 14, 2013 at 4:58 am
thanks a lot. ;)
do you know carneval? the momenent when they throw confetti at the masses? this is the red dot. over 1/3 of the submissions were rewarded with a red dot. you really have to fail very hard to avoid being awarded with one. this is why it was thrown out of the creative rankings. it's to easy to get one and it's already to common. you're paying to get one and you'll get what you've payed for. period. it's a business model.
it's not like I wouldn't be happy for BB. I know that it sounds great that the Z10 was awarded for it's design. But if you know the worth of this award it tastes like ashes in your mouth. believe me. our agency has won several of these when they were still valuable.
BruvvaPete2 Mar 14, 2013 at 9:05 am
I get it but people are just trying to feel good. That's all.

Team BlackBerry soooo deserves this award. All the hard work has paid off. Once the balance sheet is firmly in the black and the future is clear it would be great if TH could hire back some of the folks he had to let go. That would be very nice to see. It's all about the people working for BB!!
pandapurple Mar 13, 2013 at 5:38 pm
Congratulations, guys! An accolade for your hard work! Never stopped believing in BlackBerry. Keep it up! The playing field is ever more competitive and keep innovating!

Rootbrian Mar 14, 2013 at 5:59 pm
It's $650 per blackberry Z10. $250 is subsidized.

So proud of my Z10! I sometimes wish that the chrome BlackBerry logo at the back was placed higher, so the public can see that I'm using a BlackBerry when I'm making calls. Congrats guys!

Wish I could find a sticker of those 7 BB dots so I could put it on the back of my case and still let everyone knowI am using a BB
BionicKris Mar 14, 2013 at 4:15 am
I also wish CB had decals of the BB logo. I'd put on on the back of my phone case. I need to use a case (just on the back) but I'd still rock a decent-sized BB logo decal on the outside of that. Why have blank space? I'd be proud to fly our flag. (I do keep the front of my BBs exposed to the world for all to see)
Hmmm.... Kev-in!!!
BruvvaPete2 Mar 13, 2013 at 11:50 pm
I agree. The logo placement could have been a lot higher for people who don't realize which device they're looking at. People are constantly asking me if this is the new iPhone
