Keep track of what your battery is up to with Battery Guru for BlackBerry 10

Ever since I started using a BlackBerry I have always wanted quick and easy access to see how my battery is performing. There are a few apps in BlackBerry World that will instantly show you your current battery percentage, however I recently stumbled across Battery Guru for BlackBerry 10 and I absolutely love it!

Battery Guru is also available for the BlackBerry PlayBook but since I don't use the tablet as much now that I have my Z10 it's the phone app I will focus on. So, rather than just just presenting you with the current battery percentage left - Battery Guru gives you a whole bunch of other information - most importantly for me being able to view the discharge rate on a graph. It's not an obsession of mine - I just like to know how things are performing, honest!

Battery Guru has a great Active Frame too so if the app is running you can just peek at your home screen to view the battery level as well as a few other bits of info. I love this feature and nice Active Frames really are a deal breaker for me.



So, jumping into the app you are presented with a graph covering the top half of the screen. You can scroll this to the right to view your performance over the last few days which is a nice touch. Under the graph are four icons. These are battery level, power, time to empty and current temperature. Give them a flick to the left and you get another couple - voltage and current.

Home Screen

Down at the base of the display are three tabs. The first of these is alarms where you can set the app to notify you when your BlackBerry has reached a certain level whilst on charge or more importantly when the battery is getting low.

Tab number two is records. Here you actually have the option to export your battery information as a CSV file which is pretty clever if you ask me. And then finally we have the diagnostics tab which offers some further battery information.

One further thing worth mentioning is temperature units. These are determined by the system's Metric/Imperial setting, but the developer has indicated he'll be adding an in-app setting for the temperature units in the next release - good stuff.

Used this on PB. It is awesome. Even tells you health of battery.

Yep. I 'm using it. I like to watch the current draw as I do various things. That way I can find what is using the most battery.

(Developer here) I'd like to note that the "alarm levels" feature is NOT implemented in this first release, but will be arriving in the next main release. I put it there as a placeholder/teaser but don't want anyone to get the mistaken impression it's functioning now. Enjoy the app! --Peter

So true! I was bummed when the update didn't install properly - I think I inadvertently interfered with it - and I couldn't get it to reinstall. So, I took out my SIM and there it was. I am absolutely thrilled with the performance ever since! Without the feedback of the forums, I wouldn't have known it wasn't working. Thank Gawd (or Kevin, I suppose ) for CrackBerry!
As for this app, it is awesome! Peter is an excellent dev and I check his profile in BlackBerry World all the time (Enginuity) to see if he has added any new apps. Highly recommend his stuff.
Again, without the forums, I probably wouldn't know about Peter's stuff. :)

I bought this this morning. The only downer for me is that it doesn't allow you to show the temperature in Celsius, Fahrenheit means nothing to me :(

This is a great app!! I use it all the time on my PB and its always open. Same thing on my Z10, always running either in full screen or in the active frame. I am kind of obsessed with the battery % so its nice to have at a quick glance for reassurance. Thank you Peter.
P.S. Thanks for this review James. I didn't realize by swiping to the rleft gave the voltage and current indicators. learned something new. Thanks CrackBerry

As a stopgap way to change the temperature units (until the next release is approved), you can change your Metric/Imperial system setting, under Languages and Inputs. My mistake in thinking that would be sufficient for all regions, but seems for many in the UK and Canada (or somewhere else?) it needs to be a separate setting from that. -Peter

Agreed. Great app! Leave it on for a day or two and watch your own trends, very cool! I'm also obsessed with performance so this tickles me the right way.

Now I just wish my battery would last longer than a few hours so I could really take advantage of Battery Guru...
