BlackBerry Workspace demoed on iOS and Android devices

A few days ago at the BlackBerry Enterprise Forum one of the key announcements made by BlackBerry was the introduction of the Workspace for iOS and Android devices.

One of the coolest factors to this option for those using the Blackberry Enterprise Service 10, is that you can deploy corporate applications to all the handhelds that are associated with the BES 10 server. Take a look at the video above of the BlackBerry Workspaces on iOS and Android.

There is no real 'upgrade'. The best thing is to run the old BES and BES 10 side-by-side.

Depending on the size of the company it can easily run on a low-key virtual machine.
The setup is done in a few hours.

It's smart business. It's the same reason Google would make their maps available to everyone. Each time you use the BB portion of the phone, you're reminded how your phone is NOT a BB. You're reminded how useless your current phone is for the things that actually matter - solid communication. It's about branding, advertising, and marketing. BB wants to be in your face at all times. That's how they pull you in.

In business (and war), it's called flanking - attack the competition (enemy) at their weakest points. iPhone and Android are weak in a lot of areas. This is one area that BB is strongest + they've shored up other weaknesses to some degree.

Once the apps catalog fills up, the only real beef now, people are going to look at iPhone and Android like... eh, so what, I prefer my little BB app so I might as well get a BB next.

Maybe they are using Google tactics.

As in design great services for all platforms (Google Maps and Gmail) and then once everyone is reliant on the services start removing support for everyone unless they move to your platform.

Saw a lot of comments on the YouTube video about how this is a stupid idea by BBRY. That is a very shortsighted viewpoint. I believe this type of service answers Umi's common question about service revenue.

People are already using iPhone and Android devices (in fact almost everyone is). This move opens all those devices up as a potential revenue stream as people bring those devices to work. If I understand BES10 pricing right, licenses for new phones on the BES10 will cost something (only existing BB licenses will move up for free). This makes every iPhone and Android phone (and tablet) on the market a potential revenue source for BBRY and really leverages their key corporate identifier: secure e-mail and connectivity.

On the hardware side, this scenario allows them to fight for a good slice of the consumer market (the Z10 is a nice consumer phone, when combined with BES10 it is an awesome professional grade device) without actually trying to take back the entire market from APPL and Android . On the service side every smart device out there becomes potential revenue and BBRY doesn't have to sell this new service to new customers, simply upgrade their existing corporate ones and the revenue begins to flow.

Yes, you've summed it up nicely.

A great many businesses are currently on BES and are at least looking at BYOD. Adopting BES10 is a relatively low-impact way of implementing BYOD as opposed to migrating to another vendor's platform.

I sure hope BlackBerry is doing what it can to let the corporates know they have this product. I agree with Umi on previous articles that the service revenue is definitely going to take a hit this year.
