When RIM purchased QNX from Harman International, they didn't just purchase the bit and pieces that their next operating system would be built on. No, they purchased a full-fledged business that has been active in numerous sectors since it began in 1980 and to this day, is still continuing to grow each year.

The QNX CAR 2 application platform covers the vehicle infotainment sector has now been recognized as a International CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree, in the Software & Mobile Apps category. If you're not familiar with the awards, in order to be considered, a product needs to demonstrate innovative design and engineering and judges have now determined the QNX CAR 2 platforms fits in nicely there.

“This has been a tremendous year for us, especially for the QNX CAR 2 application platform, which has seen exceptional validation from the automotive community,” said Derek Kuhn, vice president, sales and marketing, QNX Software Systems. “We look forward to continuing this momentum throughout 2013, and the CES Innovations Design and Engineering award is a great way to start the new year.”

To celebrate, you'll be able to check out the QNX CAR 2 application platform at CES Unveiled on January 6th in addition to the other exhibits that can be viewed when CES 2013 fully kicks off in the Las Vegas Convention Center. QNX Named as CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Award Honoree

OTTAWA, November 13, 2012QNX Software Systems Limited , a global leader in software platforms for the in-car infotainment and telematics market, today announced that its QNX CAR™ 2 application platform has been named an International CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree, in the Software & Mobile Apps category. The prestigious program was created to honor outstanding design and engineering in consumer electronics products across 29 product categories. Products are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, engineers, and members of the media.

The QNX CAR 2 application platform is a pre-integrated software stack designed to reduce the time and effort of creating highly sophisticated and personalizeable in-car infotainment systems. It is now being evaluated by select automakers and tier one automotive suppliers for use in next-generation infotainment systems.

The Innovations Design and Engineering Awards are sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) ®, the producer of the International CES, the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow, and have been recognizing achievements in product design and engineering since 1976.

Honorees will be displayed at CES Unveiled, the official press event of the International CES, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 6 in the South Seas Ballroom C at Mandalay Bay. They will also be on display at the Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase in The Venetian at the 2013 International CES, which runs January 8-11, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Separately, QNX Software Systems will also exhibit at CES 2013 in the Las Vegas Convention Center North Hall, booth number 1837.

The Innovations entries are judged on the following criteria:
  • Engineering qualities, based on technical specs and materials used
  • Aesthetic and design qualities, using photos provided
  • The product’s intended function and user value
  • Unique or novel features that consumers would find attractive
  • How the design and innovation of the product compares to other products in the marketplace

To be selected as an Innovation honoree, a product needs to demonstrate innovative design and engineering. For example, it may be the first product to combine various technologies or it may offer dramatic enhancements over previous product designs.

Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering honoree products are featured on the CES Innovation Awards web page, which lists product categories, as well as each product name, manufacturer information, designer, description, photo and URL.

QNX CAR 2 platform named as an International CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree

Well there's no voice control on the Playbook, so how is that the same? They've made this for the QNX Car 2 at the same time they're making BB10 OS, I don't think they would bother making 2 different voice systems...

I want a BlackBerry10 car seriously BlackBerry logo and all. RIM and Cadillac would have been my dream machine but that's gonna be just that...a dream. I can settle for a BB Lexus though.

Saw this video many months ago and html5 is coming along beautifully.

Looks promising, I wonder if they are going to rename it to BlackBerry CAR 2 Platform.

On a lighter note, new drinking game! Take a shot every time Sheridan says um. :)

or "and again..." :p I would rather they don't call it Blackberry though, Even if Blackberry were to become the #1 OS again, it would be confusing for people who don't use a BB, and possibly a turn off. I would rather be able to go around and say "you know your car runs QNX which is built by Research in Motion aka Blackberry ;)"

Liked seeing the BlackBerry logo used as a menu button on the bottom right; gives me hope that the dot dot dot menu button on the dev alpha will actually be a BB button at launch like some have hoped for.

hopefully this will lead to some kind of BlackBerry Bridge between BB10 and my car. pair up then voice activate a contact and QNX Car2 plots a course to their house via gps. when i get about a mile from their automatically phones up to tell friends to start making the tea. :-)

It will be really interesting to see if BlackBerry / RIM takes QNX technology and further implement them in other industries. I read that they are already used in many high tech places like nuclear power plants, military applications, etc...

Its great to see the powers of qnx shown here. Also the close similarities with the playbook functionality.
I guess the car will need its own contract though (as the demo seemed to be working too fast for internet tethering!)
Also I'm not sure how all this works when you drive out of town and theres no web signal?

Unfortunately, I just bought a whole new navigation/audio system for my vehicle. I feel that this could have done everything mine does, and more! I also think, that it'll use the same receivers as any other system, but with different software, and a full touch screen.

Nice to see the BB logo on the display but why is QNX advertising for Apple ? Should be showing the system connect with BB phone and playing music from the BB. Nothing like helping promote the competition.

I think they we're more concerned to show people that the system has compatibility with other product. and Since Apple is one of the largest consumer products it only makes sense.. Don't get me wrong I by no means like apple products.. Plus having the BB logo already displayed, it's a given it links with BB products.

So if I have this system in my car and if I have BB10 will I be able to remote start my car from inside my house? I know there are remote car starts out there that act as key chains, but I find those cumbersome, you have to go to the window and point at your car and it is a bit of hassle sometimes. I figure with the power of QNX and the power of BB10 one may be able to press a button on ones phone from anywhere really and have their car start up.

Cheers,

That already exists. I can start my car with my keychain from upto a mile away.

I can also start it with my phone from anywhere in the world (as long as I have a data connection & pay the $50 a year subscription)

I guess I'm a little out of touch when it comes to automobiles and technology :D

thanks for the enlightenment.

Cheers,
