That was painless! The Fedex man barely left my house, and I already have my BlackBerry Bold ColorWare-customized, photos snapped, and this post up.

I dropped word on the blogs of ColorWare's new BlackBerry Bold parts-only service a couple days ago - instead of sending your BlackBerry Bold into ColorWare to get custom painted you can simply order the parts (back casing, including different color for camera cover, and bottom tongue for under the keyboard) and install them yourself when they arrive. Installing the battery door cover was obviously a no-brainer, and using the included tool to snap out the tongue (carefully stick the flat edge under the bottom piece below the left Alt key and gently pry up) was an easy process as well.

I knew I was taking a risk in ordering the metallic CrackBerry Orange and Purple battery door (I stuck to black for front piece to get rid of the Rogers branding and keep it "stock" looking when skinned), but the crazy color scheme actually looks really good... the photos don't do it justice. It definitely will be the best-dressed phone on Halloween and I'll be using this battery cover at BlackBerry conferences so you can pick me out of the crowd! More pictures after the jump, and if you want to customize your own Bold, just click on over to ColorWare's website.

So...Kevin is taking apart his Bold...customizing it, making it look like a true Crackberry...and what am I doing?

Still. Waiting.

November 4th...5 days. Unbelievable.

Nice Kev!! It came with the prying tool? Definitely the way to go. Gonna get a black door since I hate that ugly pleather back

Thanks, Kev. I'd hate to tackle this thing without those tools. I can keep the cosmetics of my device in pristine condition now. YES!

if all you want is black then go to cnn.cn - not sure what the price diff is but I'm sure it's cheaper. I got the unbranded "tongue" for $5 a while back.

The older model berries dont have this option, and i say older, I mean the curve 8300-8330, 8800-8830, 8100-8130, all the models can be taken apart and re-housed, and us who aren't with robbers...er...rogers should have the option to buy a new housing painted custom-like from color ware...

here to hoping they initiate something soon for us all...

I do believe that timbatty meant a option to have just the parts sent to you for the 83xx and 88xx series, because I know they don't have that option...

you guys can buy oem parts including a black door a black unbranded bottom cover. its not really worth it to get it from colorware if you're just trying to get black.

Kevin...dude...I love your website, I know you're busy and all, but you have me addicted to your podcast and it's been like 37 years since your last one. What gives?

they should make it cheaper. 100$ for the door is too much.
i would love to get 3 (Brown, blue and black) but 300$ for the doors is way too much.

I just wrapped my phone in printed vinyl instead and it looks awesome!.. I'll post pictures when I get around to taking some

I love the ColorWare idea. They are a great company and have a killer website. If you have the cash to spend an extra $150 to upgrade your already $400 phone, then kudos to you my friend!

OK, I did this in the past and saved a ton of money.

Go to: http://cnn.cn/shop/blackberry-bold-9000-black-bezel-battery-cover-p-3726...

Buy the complete Housing and paint it yourself. $34 for everything! I did this on my first BB 3 years ago and came out nice. The hard thing is getting all the parts to lineup in a perfect fashion.

you can pick some up at any sign print shop, just go in asking if you can buy a little bit of scrap, they'll usually give it to you for free or really cheap. it has adhesive backing so you just install it onto your blackberry with your thumb and then cut away the excess in the grooves of the berry with an exacto knife.

The great part is you can remove it later and install a new colour on whenever you get bored and it also adds an extra layer to the phone as protection so if you drop your phone, only the vinyl gets damaged.

I actually used a bit of scrap from a vehicle wrap we did so my phone looks like it's made of blue marble :-D

x2

Not sure about the colour combo- but it looks sweet! Looks much better without the Rogers brand!

Nice comment buddy! Made me laugh. Actually, ColorWare doesn't offer any sort of referral program at all. I wish they did though...gotta pay the bills! I have asked them about it but it's not something they have in place. We're always very clear about when we have an affiliation with a company (potentially profit from a post) - you'll see we link back to our store offerings, or if an affiliate/partner they will be featured on the site elsewhere as such).

I personally just love ColorWare products... so you can expect me to ColorWare up probably most of the new BBs I get. I am DIEING to have an all-white 8900 Curve. Though I think my next custom painted berry will have to be done up my BeckyMae - she's been doing some awesome work!!!

Next time you have a question like this to ask...feel free to ask it as a logged in member (no need to go anonymous) or you can always shoot me a direct email on it. Always open about stuff like this.

Later man!

What is your email address? Seriously, I was hoping you would reply to my comment above:

Hi Kevin,

Is the Orange and Purple the same as the one shown on their site?

http://crackberry.com/colorware-bold-parts-now-available-no-need-mail

Because your's looks really different, almost dull and worn compared to what I see on the ColorWare site?? The colors on the site look so Shiny and Vibrant. I know you said the pictures don't do it justice, but they seem way off. I'd like to be sure before dropping $99 for a battery cover. I am thinking of getting the solid Red or Yellow. Maybe a high-res photo would do it justice?

Thanks!

Hey Conker,

The colors I picked were the metallic ones - Hybrid (orange) and Mystique (purple). They do look a little different than the colors shown on the site. I think the standard colors are pretty accurate, but with the metallics they can look a bit different. I'd say compared to the website images, the Hybrid color is a bit darker looking in reality (has that sort of metallic fleck).

I'll do up a high res photo in bright light when I get a chance and see how it compares. My enail is easy - kevin @ crackberry.com

Keep in mind I'm swamppped with emails so unless it's a 911 email I might be slower to respond. Try my best to get through them all though.

lol@ somebody being un-BOLD

in a bold blog

FAIL

dude...grow a sack when addressing someone semi-negatively

and doing so with an unregistered name

Hey Kev,

You only have 73 emails unread. Your catching up. I guess us mods are not keeping you busy enough.

I really like the smooth coloured back covers...but why do they persist in putting their name / logo on them ? If that was black their white text at bottom would stand out even more.

Yes advertising obviosuly...but they sell you a blank piece so you can get rid of advertising the carrier name but then stick their own name on their covers...just think its odd thats all.

I actually had an encounter with a Blackberry Bold today

and i must say...its not as big as i thought it was...

I have big hands...but it fit pretty well in my hands...the keys are nice...the screen is awesome...and the 3G is pretty darn awesome...

now if only i could plot a Cu De Ta on T-Mobile to get the bold there by this time tomorrow...

any minions?

will there be any aftermarket plates for the bold? like the cheaper one's they sell at the shopping mall carts?

Hey Kevin! Did you use your real name when you put your order in? If so wouldnt you think that the chumps over at ColorWare noticed who this was and put everything else on hold getting yours done, and getting it out to you in record time?

Kevin Michaluk. The god of BB bloggers. The one guy who can sink a company with just 5 minutes and a within the confines of a blog post, telling everyone on a site that gets millions of visits how terrible his experience with this company was. Nah...they treated you as a normal customer, right? Ya ok :)

I bet they make sure everyone in Canada gets lightning fast servce just in case.

On another note, m looking forward to the next podcast
