Here's one for you cooking fans - Chef's Recipe Box for BlackBerry 10

By James Richardson on 4 May 2013 11:10 am EDT

We've seen a few cooking applications arrive for BlackBerry 10 and I recently stumbled upon Chef's Recipe Box which is quite a beauty. The application is a native BlackBerry one, which always pleases me. Not that there is anything wrong with the Android ports - but I just prefer native. The UI of the app is kept pretty plain and simple with black writing on a white background but the features it offers are pretty sweet.

Upon opening the app you are presented with a of list popular recipes and above that you have a search box if you are looking for something in particular. Down at the base of the display are three tabs. The first of these is 'Categories' and there is a huge selection to choose from. Tap on one and again you presented with a selection of dishes to cook.

Once in a recipe the screen is split into two sections. At the top is the list of ingredients that are required for the dish. Beside each is a check box so if you are in the supermarket you can tick of the items as you pick them up.

Under the ingredients are the cooking steps and they are quite detailed. Once again, these too have a check box so you can keep track of where you are in the cooking process. From here you can add the recipe to your favorites, edit if you fancy making some adjustments or even add a photo of the finished product which is a neat feature.

Jumping back to the home screen the other two tabs are 'Recent' and 'Add' if you fancy adding your own dish to the list.

And that's about it. Cooking made easy - just the way I like it.

Priced at $0.99/£0.75 Chef's Recipe Box is a real bargain for you guys and gals that love to cook.

Recipe box has been known to prevent some z10's from backing up. This is not the same app I don't believe but if anyone notices the same issue you should just have to uninstall the app.

Excellent, this is something I was waiting for. So far used our groceries and all sorts of other apps like cooklet but this is amazing. Will give that a shot!

My app is empty, there are no recipes in it. Am I the only one with this issue?

If anyone has a solution for this problem please tell me.

Thanks for your help

Thanks James for the review. I really appreciate it.

Thanks tom_heu and tomasdorf for letting me know about the empty database issue.

If you are having the empty recipe issue, it is probably because your locale is not English. I uploaded a new version that will fix the problem. However, it will be a few days before AppWorld reviews the fix.

Please follow the workaround below to fix the issue for now:

1. Uninstall/delete the application
2. Change your language to English
3. Reinstall the application. It should be loaded with English recipes.
4. Change your locale back to your original language.
5. The application should be working properly

If you still have the problem, please send me an email or message on the crackberry forum.

Thank you!

I just bought this cooking app and the bartending app from this company. I like the cookbook but as I really delve into the cocktail recipes I noticed a lack of martinis and few more standard drinks. Overall I still love the apps and hope more companies embrace custom BB10 technology.
