CES 2010: Video First Look at the Upcoming inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry Smartphones
While walking through the BlackBerry booth at CES 2010 a short while ago I ran into the folks from Allerta. That's the start-up company out of Waterloo, Canada, that are working on the inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry Smartphones, or "BlackBerry Watch" as everybody undoubtedly refers to it as. The watch is still in development and they left their working prototypes back at home, but I tried on the shell quick to get a feel for it. Suffice to say, it looks and feels better than I expected. It's big, but not too big, and it's kind of funky. It fits with the look of today's sort of fashion watches. If it came with interchangeable straps or in a full metal strap version that could be pretty sweet. I'll be eager to get my hands on the real deal when they have it ready and put it through its paces. There's lots more to say but gotta keep this post short as I'm late for a meeting... stay tuned for more!

Seems pretty neat, i like the whole idea of never having to pull your phone outta your pocket to check e-mails, sms, etc. but it looks a little bulky, was it really a comfortable fit? and what material is the band made of? Im just still a little skeptical that this is something i really want to wear. May just have to wait till it slims up in a future improved version.
cjohnson481 Jan 8, 2010 at 7:15 pm
have mine on pre-order. sad that it wont come til april.
Bold_until_Hybrid_Comes Jan 8, 2010 at 7:16 pm
i have it on pre order
JRF_1986 Jan 8, 2010 at 7:17 pm
I don't use watches, but this does seem like something I would like to wear, at least for a little while, mainly to show off, but I still prefer holding my BB in my hand so people can see it.
ranger_gm Jan 8, 2010 at 7:58 pm
I asked Allerta regarding the wrist strap and they emailed me back stating that the band shipped will be a standard size 22mm polyurethane band that you can switch out any band of your choice that matches the size. I've never liked plastic bands so plan to swap it for a nicer metal one. Mine's in pre-order also.

cool watch kevin, a panerai?
Xopher Jan 8, 2010 at 8:20 pm
I also think it looked a little bulky. It didn't seem like it was much larger than Kevin's watch, but seemed pretty thick.
coopsachillin Jan 8, 2010 at 8:38 pm
she did look a little thick
artie Jan 8, 2010 at 10:05 pm
Both of those watches should be hanging on a wall; different strokes...
rchartier Jan 8, 2010 at 8:33 pm
With a nice metal band the watch itself won't look as bulky either.
coopsachillin Jan 8, 2010 at 8:40 pm
A nice metal band probably would take away from the size some, especially with the metal accents on the watch it's self.

I love it. Very cool.
cbunting Jan 8, 2010 at 8:48 pm
I have to say I think I'm going to forget about my pre-order, the actual product looks huge... the website makes it look a lot smaller.. I don't think I want to wear that honkin watch... Plus not having a working demo at CES tells me this could all be a pipe dream, and not actually working yet.
montoya32 Jan 8, 2010 at 9:06 pm
Stoooopid. Have we all gotten that lazy that we can't reach a few inches and pick up our phones?
cjohnson481 Jan 8, 2010 at 9:58 pm
some of us are stuck in meetings during the day and its quite rude to pull out your berry everytime you feel it vibrate. if i can look at my watch to see what the alert is and know that maybe i have something that needs attention to immediately and excuse myself from the meeting, well worth the investment.
OME6A Jan 11, 2010 at 2:46 am
Sooooooo instead of being "that guy" who's so important he has to keep looking at his damn phone, you're going to be "that guy" that keeps looking at his watch because he's got somewhere more important to be?
This product is nothing but a big fat wad of disposable income jizz and you all know it.
TaylorFox Jan 8, 2010 at 9:31 pm
I wonder if they will release a women's style watch? This one in particular looked a little on the masculine side. Maybe they could incorporate interchangeable straps, as was said in the post, but also something a little sleeker that women would want to wear; just a thought
devGOD Jan 8, 2010 at 10:38 pm
So your watch tells you that you have 3 messages, then you reach in your pocket to pull out your phone. WTF! just pull out you freak'n phone why complicate a simple task that we all do everyday
mbs Jan 8, 2010 at 11:49 pm
I have one on pre-order (signed up as soon as they put up the pre-order web page), but on video they look way thicker than they did in the original renderings.
Having second thoughts. I don't really want to walk around looking like a total nerd with an 11 mm thick piece of metal strapped to my wrist, dwarfing the leather band and all.
Hmmm....
3G.BoldBerry Jan 9, 2010 at 12:08 am
actually its allot smaller than other watch phones, but ill wait for the second release, great to have on your wrist along side your berry
Parker41 Jan 9, 2010 at 1:16 am
My phone just decides to shut itself down when it wants to and when I turn it on, I get the "sprint screen" as if it's about to start up and the screen goes black......anyone experience that? Also, does anyone know if you can get a virus on your phone?
Thanks........
drummerman2008 Jan 9, 2010 at 3:43 am
if you guys would check out the website you can check your alerts text messages, emails all that from the phone you just want be able to reply from the watch you have to do that by phone you guys take things like this over board instead of reading the details and worrying about other people opinions

I have this on Pre-Order and am looking forward to it and if for nothing else just to say I have it. I love watches and gadgets, but I find it hysterical that Kevin couldn't put his hand in his pocket. I highly doubt that he would give up his Panerai for the BB Watch which will coast about $250.00 compared to the $6,000.00 what that was left on the counter.
robhimself Jan 11, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Agreed. That is one of my favorite watches that I would own if I had disposable income. That is of course if that is a real Panerai....
johnnymac Jan 9, 2010 at 1:07 pm
Just finished watching Iron Man again and that watch looks like something he would wear. It's a beast!
rmingram Jan 9, 2010 at 1:12 pm
For you guys in the know, what is the range or distance this watch has to be from the phone? Is it similar to bluetooth type range (up to 33 feet. I'm also wondering how much this connection effects battery life as well, (I guess every device is different I suppose). But it seems logical for it to have some effect on the battery life on your device because wireless connections (bluetooth and WIFI) often do drain your battery faster. Any feedback guys? It's a cool smartphone "accessory" to have but if I have to contemplate on purchasing a 2600 MaH extended battery for my storm 2 to compliment this ... I will pass< save my money and await the Storm 3.
donniejett Jan 9, 2010 at 2:30 pm
I like it! It doesnt look that bad.
jackbox Jan 9, 2010 at 11:41 pm
I like the idea of this watch but from what I see in the video it looks way too big. It is as wide as the guy's wrist that is wearing it. When they can shrink them down to a more realistic size then I would consider buying one.
Phatric Jan 10, 2010 at 1:00 am
So he just wanted to try it on? . . . He didn't want to USE IT?! He didn't even ask if it could be turned on, or think that we'd all want to see it in action?
Whatta douche.
Smokeaire Jan 10, 2010 at 7:27 am
Phatric, read and understand the article..this is a quote: "The watch is still in development and they left their working prototypes back at home, but I tried on the shell quick to get a feel for it."
It wasn't a working model.
Cheers

For one the Watch is HUGE, second the dicks didn't even bring the working watch to the convention. I could just as well have rolled up in there with a watch out of a quarter machine from the grocery store, took the batteries out and slapped a BlackBerry sticker on it and called it the same thing, and it would have been! I've come to the conclusion that this is for lazy people and people with more money than brains. Go buy a rolex or a TAG for god sakes at least they appreciate in value over time, and will last a life time (or more). I bet after 2 or 3 good accidental whacks of your wrist onto something, you can kiss you sweet BB watch goodbye. This is all we need! Now instead of just having to look at all these idiots with the bluetooth ear-peices' stuck to the side of their head, like alien face suckers, and wonder who the hell they are talking to, Now we gotta deal with them, AND the fools that will be constanty lookin at their watch, then reaching in their pocket to check the phone, then lookin at thier watch, then reaching for the phone, then looking at thier annoying beeping watch and digging for their phone! Some one thought they had a good idea, but all I see in this watches future is a handful of BB geeks buying it up when it 1st comes out, and then nver really using it (or breaking it). Then of course there will be the big flop and everyone will eventually forget it exists. As far as cool ideas go Id give it a 10, but as far a usefulness in the realworld and day to day durability Im throwing down a 4.
Blkbear Jan 10, 2010 at 12:04 pm
But not something I'd use myself, since I carry a pocket watch. Now had this been a pair of glasses with a heads up display, I think I would be a bit more interested.
stubbornswiss Jan 10, 2010 at 11:56 pm
Go write this down.......
"This watch phone will, like so many other ridiculous and useless gadgets before it, be nothing more than a novelty. When and IF it is ever marketed, it will have a very small and short following. Then it will fizzle into oblivion".
Like I said, go write this down.

Between the watchs, the bluetooth earpeices, the phone it's self, and the Dam car tweeting in your face we just don;t stand a chance on the highway anymore!

Alot of you guys that are making the comment "just pull out your phone" must noit work in corporate america. I have been with many companies that want you to turn your ringers off and not access your phone during meetings. I thinj this is a good way to get around that by just being ablt to look at your wrist and get your info without management being none-the-wiser! I have been on the wait list since the very beginning because I do see the usefulness of this watch. However, I'm re-thinking my purchase because I may chuck the Storm and go with the HTC HD2.

Use to stay connected to the world while avoiding awkward and unnatural movements like digging my phone from my pocket while sitting down or in the middle of conversations.
+Vibration alert of a call + caller ID - (never miss a call and ignore unimportant calls)
+get Calendar Alerts/alarms
+I have the time on my wrist in sleek watch with interchangeable strap.
Is it worth $150? Since I have been looking for a watch in the price range of 50-200... Yes!
In the future I would like to see the following
+touch screen
+ability to answer and send through to earpiece
+Ability to change songs that are playing on my BB while I am listening.
+Quick text response for text or email
+facebook/AIM notifications (I think this might be possible with the current versions, not sure)
+Functionality with apps
+stop watch/timer
+Sporty interface/removable faceplates
