Bring out your inner artist with Slide-a-Sketch for BlackBerry 10

By DJ Reyes on 21 Dec 2013 06:31 pm EST

It is always nice to discover simple apps that you can have plenty of fun with. Apps to kill a bit of time or help pass the boredom. This app lets you be creative and bring out that inner artist in you. You can also relive old memories too. Inspired by the Etch-A-Sketch, a developer brings us Slide-a-Sketch for your BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

The app has a simple interface, two sliders, one on the left of the screen and one on the right, much like the Etch-A-Sketch itself. The left slider makes the stylus move left and right, while the slider on the right moves it up and down. You have the option to save your creation to your device too. You'll find that you can navigate to your SD card to save and it goes through the process of doing so but it doesn't actually save your SD card, permissions don't allow this. It will only save to your device memory. You can also then share with others if you wish. There is a delete icon at the bottom too but you can also just shake your BlackBerry to delete it too, again just like with the Etch-A-Sketch.

I've certainly been having some fun using the app. I'm not the most artistic person but it's fun to try and create sketches. And with that I thought we could have a bit of fun and you could share your creations in the forums. No contest here and now prizes either, it's just for a bit of fun. As you can see from the video above the best I could do was a heart and a bad one at that. If you can do better, hit up the forums with your sketch.

Slide-a-Sketch is free to download and is available for all BlackBerry 10 devices. Check it out today.

Like the original one, I'd probably use it once and then toss it in the corner.

Sent from the future on my Z10

Keep the Z though.

I think it'd be better to just draw freehand with your finger instead of with sliders. Just my opinion...

It's inspired by Etch-A-Sketch and no pen was involved there, just knobs

These kind of apps are cool to doodle with and make gifs with screenshots

Would love to be able to write free hand for note taking and drawing.

Good stuff. I actually scrolled to the bottom just to make sure it was free before reading the article. Downloading now...

Thanks DJ for featuring Slide a Sketch on CrackBerry! Whoo! Nice article.

As the developer I would like to address the request regarding free sketching: Just like colour selection, there are so many sketch apps already, ones that include way more cool functions then I can add, but SaS was developed with etch a Sketch in mind with the same features and limitations.

For next versions I'll be looking into the SD card problem, als I'm thinking of making circular sliders to mimic Etch a Sketch even further.

For any questions, suggestions or small talk, feel free to ask. Reply here, or email me.
