Lets Golf 2 HD v2.0

One of my favorite games for the PlayBook, Lets Golf 2 HD, has just been updated to version 2.0. No changelog with this, but expect a few new features as well as PlayBook 2.0 optimization, as we are seeing with other PlayBook app updates. Also, this popular multi-platform game is a bit cheaper in price (was $6.99 when I bought it). You can grab it in BlackBerry App World for your PlayBook for $2.99.

Foodspotting v1.1

*Update 2- Version 1.1.0.20 is now available to everyone.

*Update- Looks like there is a bit of a bug here. This update wasn't supposed to hit until next week, but is showing up for some (mainly those who have the previous version installed). We will update when it becomes available to everyone.

Do you like taking pictures? Do you like food? Well maybe you would like taking pictures of food, then. Foodspotting is a service that lets you take pictures of food, upload it, add restaurant you are currently at, and review or comment on how that particular food is. It's great for discovering food and restaurants nearby, and the app integrates with foursquare and Twitter.

Foodspotting for BlackBerry has finally been updated to version 1.1, and they did a complete overhaul. The previous version was laggy, quite ugly, and overall just didn't work very well. Thankfully, this version fixes all of those problems, and brings you the same experience you would see on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7 with their Foodspotting app (finally). No actual changelog here, but besides the enhancements I listed, I did notice that the app shrunk by 1/3 in size, which is always welcomed. Screenshots after the break.

Dream Sounds

Do you have trouble falling asleep? I sure do. And the old sleep therapy sound machines are just too low-tech, and outdated for me. But I need something, so I gave Dream Sounds a shot on my BlackBerry. The app is quite simple. Choose a sound, set the volume, add a timer if you wish, and drift away. The different sounds available include:

  • Babbling Stream
  • City Noise
  • Crickets
  • Rain
  • Thunderstorm (my favorite)
  • Tropical Rainforest
  • Waterfall
  • Waves
  • White Noise
  • Wind Chimes

I did have a few hiccups with the app shutting down on me, but after the last update I have no problems. Dream Sounds will set you back $3.99, which may sound steep to some, but I think it is definitely worth it. All devices running OS 5 and up are supported. Hit the break for a couple screenshots.

Want to win a BlackBerry J-Series Extra Battery Charger Bundle for the Bold 9900 from CrackBerry.com? Keep reading for contest details.

Extra Battery Charging Bundle for the Bold 9900/9930

I finally got myself a Bold 9900 a few weeks ago, and to my surprise (as with many others) the battery life didn't stand up to what I am used to with BlackBerry. On the plus side, BlackBerry users can always carry an extra battery and swap it out when necessary. But sometimes just getting an extra battery isn't enough. You would have to charge both batteries via your BlackBerry, and that could be time consuming and annoying. And frankly, I am too lazy for that. So instead of just grabbing an extra battery, I decided to go with the BlackBerry J-Series Extra Battery Charger Bundle, which includes a standalone battery charger. It was a wise decision.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS v2.0 Developer Beta updated

Lloyd on PlayBook

The developer beta for the BlackBerry PlayBook v2.0 has been updated. With it brings just a few improvements to help developers in creating their apps. The first is that BlackBerry WebWorks applications can now call the GPS. Secondly, Wi-Fi profiles are now saved and do not disappear after rebooting your PlayBook. After registering to receive the developer beta software, an icon will appear in the status bar on their BlackBerry PlayBook to notify that the update is available. At that point you'll have 24 hours to complete the update of software on your PlayBook. After 24 hours, developers can reregister to receive the Developer Beta of PlayBook OS 2.0 as long as the beta is still open.

If you are already running the developer beta, by now you should see a gear symbol signifying that there is an update available. To update simply tap the top right corner of your screen, select Software Updates, Check for Update and complete.

*Update* - Looks as though RIM decided to put BlackBerry App World back into the build. They've adjusted the information on their blog and it no longer reads that App World will not be loaded. Try reregistering your PIN if you have issues though as suggested in the comments.

GetGlue now available for BlackBerry 7 devices

GetGlue Beta

GetGlue has finally updated their app in BlackBerry App World to show support for BlackBerry 7 devices. While it did not actually "update" the app itself (as they have no intention of continuing development for BlackBerry) at least those who use the service can actually download it for their BlackBerry 7 device. Maybe if we complain enough they will bring all the new features and the new look (like in the updated Android and iOS version) to BlackBerry someday. Until then, I guess we will all have to make the best of it ;-)

New from Epic Applications is a very cool game, Humans vs Aliens. For some of you who play games on other mobile platforms, this game may seem a bit familiar to you, but is also quite different. The point of the game is just what the name would suggest, guiding your humans to protect the earth from the alien invaders. Throughout the game you will see a number of different obejects such as pitchfork armed farmers, army personel, and many more. The game is definitely a great time waster, and sure to provide hours of fun.

A question I am often asked is "How can I print from my BlackBerry?". Tazzle IT is one of the ways to do this. Not only does it print, but it alslo allows you to view content from your BlackBerry, on your PC. Tazzle IT is also great for controlling PowerPoint Presentations and more. It does require the purchase of their bluetooth enabled USB key, but for professionals who need these features it is definitely worth it. If you haven't checketd out Tazzle IT, you should definitely give it a look. The app itself is free and very simple to use. It is available for all BlackBerry devices.
