T-Mobile Bold 9700

While Kevin, Chris and Adam are concentrating on the hardware and consumer aspects of the Bold 9700, I'll be reviewing the device through the eyes of a corporate BlackBerry user. If you are someone who already has a BlackBerry and is wondering if they should upgrade to the Bold 9700 when it is released.

BlackBerry Night at the Movies - North Brunswick, NJ
Posted in Special Coverage on 29 Jul 2009 10:02 by Craig Johnston | 10 comments

BlackBerry Night At The Movies

Dante Sarigumba and I decided to attend the BlackBerry Night at the Movies event in North Brunswick, New Jersey. We bumped into Rob Kao (of SmrtGuard) who was also attending.

Bear in mind that this is not a public all-out splashy device launch, but rather an internal event for people who sell T-Mobile BlackBerrys. So the event was attended by T-Mobile employees and people from companies who sell T-Mobile BlackBerrys.

Still, the event was maybe a little on the cheap side. For example there was no food supplied, but rather snacks. And by snacks I mean cookies and soda. Dante, Rob, and I resorted to overpriced and stale movie theater hot dogs for dinner before heading back to the event and picking up our "snacks".

The event itself was held in one of the theaters and RIM/T-Mobile got up on stage to pump up the crowd of about 35 people. They called out ticket stub numbers and gave out some pretty cool prizes ranging from BlackBerry 8520's (well IOU's for them), to sweat shirts, to BlackBerry audio gateways.

Then they played a pretty cool extended commercial for the BlackBerry Curve with cool close-ups of the Curve, including shots of actually flying through the keys.

More pictures after the jump.

BoxTone Announces Launch of BoxTone Software v4.0
Posted in Enterprise on 25 Feb 2009 06:17 by Craig Johnston | 1 comments

BoxTone Software v4.0

BoxTone has been an integral part of BlackBerry enterprise environments for many years now. BoxTone provides a clear window and a magnifying glass view of your BlackBerry environment. It graphically represents the data that can be found in your BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) log files and configuration databases as well as providing real-time trending of that information. BoxTone also alerts (via email or SNMP) when problems arise or certain trended values go above a set threshold. Its alerting engines apply intelligent algorithms to the data it sees and helps it alert appropriately.

BoxTone also provides different views of this data in the form of separate console views. A Help Desk console view for example displays only user information relevant to a first line HelpDesk representative while the Messaging Operator's console provides much more information more relevant to the messaging systems and BESs themselves. So far BoxTone has made a real impact on how BES environments are monitored and maintained but now they are releasing BoxTone version 4.0 which promises to up the ante even further.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) - What Is It?
Posted in Enterprise on 16 Feb 2009 07:55 by Craig Johnston | 39 comments

The BES Solution

Research In Motion announced a new version of BES, version 5.0 on February 11th. It improves upon the existing BES platform in many ways which make administering a BES easier and more flexible. It brings a few new handheld features too which I know users will love.

However, before we get into what's new, let's go over what a BES is. In a future article I'll discuss the differences between a BES and the Microsoft mobile strategy using System Center Mobile Device Manager (SCMDM) and Windows Mobile 6.1.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 8900 Smartphone Review

CrackBerry Review: T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 8900

Before I got my BlackBerry Bold I was a BlackBerry Curve user. I had a T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 8320. The 8320 has Wi-Fi and supports Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA). The other Curve models were 8300, and 8310. The 8310 has GPS but no Wi-Fi. The 8300 has neither GPS nor Wi-Fi. I chose the 8320 so I could make use of the free calling on UMA.

The original Curve is a great BlackBerry. It fits in your hand well, it is light, the keyboard is great, and the screen is beautiful. When you made the choice on which Curve to buy however, you had to decide whether you wanted Wi-Fi or GPS. Wi-Fi allows for UMA (translation free calling) and super fast Wi-Fi browsing if you associate with a HotSpot. GPS allows for location based services (LBS). Sometimes it became a tough choice because after all, wouldn't we all rather have it all?

Well when RIM sent me the new BlackBerry Curve 8900 to review I was excited. This new Curve doesn't make you have to choose. On top of that, it is a jump forward in technology and features that are very welcomed indeed.

Enterprise 101: BlackBerry Slowness in an Exchange Environment

If your BlackBerry users are complaining about receiving emails every fifteen to thirty minutes in batches, or not receiving emails for many hours, then you may be experiencing a problem between your BlackBerry Enterprise Server(s) (BES) and your Exchange server(s).

Web Browsers Explained

Today we received an email from Mike on the CrackBerry Podcast hotline (podcast @ crackberry.com) in New Jersey asking why there are different web browsers on his new BlackBerry Storm, and why he cannot download files larger than 5 Mb.

I thought that the answer to Mike's question would also benefit everyone else, so read on after the jump for an explanation of the BlackBerry Browser.

PodTrapper – A BlackBerry Podcast Aggregator and Player
Posted in Software Reviews on 23 Dec 2008 01:07 by Craig Johnston | 17 comments

PodTrapper Podcast Manager for BlackBerry

Kevin and I love recording the CrackBerry.com podcast, and we know that all of you Addicts in the CrackBerry.com community enjoy listening to it. It is certainly possible to install a Podcast Aggregator on your computer and use the BlackBerry/Roxio combination to move those downloaded podcasts to your BlackBerry when you cradle it, but it is not as organized as it could be.

Roxio sees the podcast episodes as just audio files. It is still possible to listen to the episodes, but they remain un-organized, similar to very early MP3 players where audio files were organized into sub-directories on the player. With an iPhone for example, the podcasts reside in an organized way, even with their own category.

PodTrapper actually takes mobile podcast listening to the next step. It is a fully self contained podcast aggregator and player which allows you to subscribe to podcasts right on the BlackBerry, and download new episodes without needing to connect the BlackBerry to a computer.

Very Exciting RIM Acquisition - Chalk
Posted in Enterprise on 11 Dec 2008 13:32 by Craig Johnston | 9 comments

Chalk Logo

Today RIM announced that they will be acquiring Chalk Media Corp. I have been a believer in Chalk ever since I first saw them at WES in 2007. In fact Doug Soltys from BlackBerry Cool and I recorded a podcast at WES that year where we spoke to Brook Van Hatton from Chalk. If you'd like to take a listen, click here. The product that was creating a stir at WES was called Mobile Chalkboard.  Continue reading after the jump for more info on Mobile Chalkboard and what I think the acquisition is all about.

Saving On Call Charges in a Recession with Your BlackBerry
Posted in Help, How-To & Tips on 19 Nov 2008 09:59 by Craig Johnston | 28 comments

UMA Thurman or Universal Mobile Access?Saving money is close to the number one item on all priority lists within enterprises today and one way to save money is to cut down on the cost of calls.  BlackBerry adoption within enterprises is very high and has now become an essential part of everyday business, so there is no way that you is going to take away an employee’s BlackBerry because it will likely cost more for that employee to perform their job.  However what if you could save a lot of money on their phone calls?

That is where Universal Mobile Access (UMA) comes in.  A UMA-enabled BlackBerry has the ability to save A LOT of money and improve the whole experience as a side effect.

While this article is geared towards businesses, everyone can take advantage of this technology and save the same amount of money.

B*Nator Remote Control for BlackBerry

The company ISEC7 recently won the Enterprise category of the BlackBerry Developers Challenge with a pretty unique product for the BlackBerry called B*Nator Remote Control.

ISEC7 actually sells a BlackBerry monitoring suite, but it is this remote control tool that got all of the attention, and for good reason.

What is B*Nator Remote Control?

As the name suggests, B*Nator Remote Control allows a BlackBerry support person to take control of a BlackBerry.  Not only can they take control of someone’s BlackBerry, but they can do this over the air!

BlackBerry Enterprise Server Compatibility

BES Matrix

A very useful tool for BlackBerry administrators and support staff is RIM's BlackBerry Enterprise Server Compatibility. Just head over to this link, pick your email system (Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise) and you will get a PDF with a very detailed matrix.

This matrix details operating systems, versions of database servers, version of instant messaging infrastructures, etc. Keeping this matrix handy will certainly cut down on the number of questions that remain unanswered when it is time to upgrade a component of your network.
