If you're among the many who scooped up an unlocked AT&T branded Priv on the cheap only to find out the OS can't be updated unless you have an AT&T SIM, BlackBerry is offering some hope that that might soon no longer be an issue. As noted in the BlackBerry Knowledge Base, BlackBerry is currently working on a solution to allow updates to be made available to these devices.
Software update not received on unlocked AT&T branded PRIV when using a non-AT&T SIM card
OVERVIEW
If the AT&T branded PRIV was purchased as a factory unlocked device and is not being used with an active AT&T SIM card, software updates will be unavailable.
RESOLUTION
BlackBerry is currently working on a solution to allow updates to be made available to these devices. This article will be updated when a solution is made available.
As we know from the past, getting BlackBerry updates from carriers has always been a little bit tricky but with BlackBerry's move to Android, the situation got even trickier. For BlackBerry 10, access to the autoloader programs containing the OS allowed for easy installation and while BlackBerry does make the Android OS downloads available as well, they are more 'contained' shall we say in the fact that you can't just simply install them onto just any Priv. Hopefully, BlackBerry will be able to clear this situation up for those who bought an unlocked AT&T branded version without prior knowledge of how the OS updates would work.
