BlackBerry Traffic

BlackBerry Traffic has spent a bit of time being overhauled and we had a few updates in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. Today RIM has officially released the latest version in BlackBerry App World. The new version includes and updated UI as well as maneuver guidance, essentially giving you turn-by-turn directions from within the app. New features include:

  • Complete UI revamp – You asked for it, you got it. BlackBerry Traffic 2.0 features new icons, color scheme, 6.0-style theme, and more!
  • Route selection screen - You told us you want more routes to choose from, so we took action. There are now two route choices (including ETA and trip distance info for each) available to you as soon as you select a destination.
  • Future traffic view - A new future traffic view can be accessed by selecting the current time on the route selection screen, or by flipping through the different views when a route is selected. This view can be used to determine the best departure time based on predicted traffic conditions.
  • Next maneuver drive view - The simple view has been revised to display the next maneuver with corresponding turn icon in a large, easily viewable font.
  • Search history - Frequent search terms are now available from a drop down on the search screen.

While it doesn't necessarily beat out full out GPS apps like VZ Nav or Telenav, it does get the job done and you can't beat the price. If you haven't tried it yet or you still have an older version, head to BlackBerry App World to grab the latest version.

mohawk apple

Does this work here in montreal? Lot of traffic here lol

SkaterGuy2k

This works great in Toronto, Very Accurate

michjarv

I have been on App World since 12 noon and it still not showing up. Is this only for Canada? I'm in US and I have not seen the new 2.0 version.

valorian

App world is still showing 1.3.3.14.

Nice. I'm hoping this works well in Europe too. Heading there for a trip this summer and my several-year-old Garmin doesn't have European maps.

This is not the first time this has happened, so my question is "Why is it that when something is posted here or on another blog that an app was just updated, but so many of us still see the old version in App World?" This happens very often and I do not understand. Do you have an answer Adam?

mckillio

It's a roll out release,so that the app world servers don't get overwhelmed. Also helps in case there's an issue with the app, not as many have it.

I've been using the google maps app for directions. Can you fine people answer my question:

Is Blackberry Traffic better for getting directions than Google Maps?

chrisryan44

so far I've found the directions it gives to be just as accurate, but its different from gmaps because it doesn't give you a map, it gives you a list of directions to follow in a pretty nice interface, and shows what traffic should be. its different, try it out sometime and see what you like better. I keep both and use traffic for directions, gmaps for when I need to see a map of whats around me

Ghostnyc

The UI in Google Maps in some ways is nicer and more typical, however from my experience beta testing Traffic in the NYC/Tr-State area- BB Traffic is 1. more accurate with directions, 2. more accurate with traffic conditions, 3. faster with re-routing and incidentally safer to use while driving.

The search feature is also very good, my only complaint so far is regarding the search feature which only shows how far away your query is, it does not give a general direction or display point on a map.

Can you guys (Crackberry) please list the app version, when posting these stories, please?

Is this better than google maps?

Skezza

We have traffic in the UK as well!!

SSaywell

A lot of it round hear :@, this app would be very useful, hope RIM make a UK/EU version (I don't care if it ain't EU, f*** the rest of europe, I want UK :))

Saw a review on here for this app, sounds good, I want, better than paying for GPS device.

phillysphinest87

V2 is not showing up yet in my app world either :(

ba_hamilton

For those that ask if this is better than Google Maps, I think the answer is "It's different" You have to have BB Maps installed for Traffic to work. For those that have a burr in their saddle about BB Maps you might as well stick with Google Maps.

I think it gives better traffic information than Google Maps. The directions are easier for me to read. The UI has been improved in this version of Traffic and it's a much better app than a couple of releases ago. Give it another shot if it has been a while since you've used it.

Adam,
A question from a fellow NY Met fan,
Will BB Traffic work on the Playbook? The larger screen would be a gigantic plus!!

sf49ers

hopefully Garmin or Tomtom will make an app for the Playbook. Of-course that will be a paid version

enots27

Will they ever relaese this for the uk users.

omgitsalive

Europe hasn't even seen V1 yet.... but glad you guys get a V2!

mkye86

I have done the ALT+RST+RST and still dont have the updated version. I was using the one in the Beta, but I upgraded my OS and went back to 1.3. App World is not showing 2.0. Grrr

synwars

Soft reset didn't work for me either, try pulling your battery. Worked for me. :)

Blackfeet

And one more question from a new user...

Are these Voice Directions, or just graphic?

Thanks...

Aztek13

No update yet in Canada. I got excited and deleted the beta version so I could install the final version. The link just takes me to ver. 1.3.3.14. Not cool.

svanneck

It still takes me over 3 miles through residential side streets @ 25-30mph instead of a much faster route 1/2mi away. FAIL.

Mwanahabari

Yet another to add to the list of apps that RIM only make available in North America. Way to go RIM to make your worldwide customers feel valued. Mind you, we still havent been graced with a functional podcast app yet. The discrimination shown by RIM to it's non North American users is a disgrace and an insult.

Blkbear

I found when I was using an earlier version of BB Traffic that it was fairly accurate with the directions. My only problem with using it was the size of my BB's screen and not having a holder that held it at dashboard level, so voice directions would have been great, but that's is not the point of Blackberry Traffic, at least not in it's current form.

But it works as a traveling since it updates as you go.

bambuco

um yeah... still not showing v2 in app world on device, i see it online at the app world via PC but when clicking on dowload links on device app world is still showing v1.3, no happy.

BTW: does anyone notice that when a new version comes to Beta Zone the app stops connecting to servers? Ever since this app come out of beta officially, the last two updates (including this last one) for the few weeks before its announced in Beta Zone to the add'l weeks it takes to come out with a new versions, the app on my device fails to connect to the servers!!! It'll keep trying and trying with no success. So, i knew a new version was coming out before it was even leaked because BB Traffic started to act up.

I'll take this to the forums, but thought i'd post this here in case others had similar issues....also to state v2 is still not in app world and lets just say i am eagerly waiting for it.

bluedragon1971

Still not available for the Curve 3g 9330.

zensen

I can't see why they can't just integrate this into bb maps and/or another free map source.

Its a shame these releases like protect and traffic are only a limited release. It takes them crap load amount of time to even consider many parts of the world.

ldsmaf

There is NO option to download V2. I tried the QR code and on app world, it only re-downloads the 1.3.3.14 How do I get version 2??????????????????

mundo472

I had beta tested V2 and just re-downloaded the latest version from the beta site, but I don't see the three colorful icons at the bottom of the screen as seen above. I am running it on an S2. Does anyone else see them on V2?

danisnotstan

I just installed Traffic for the first time yesterday so I'm not too familiar with it. My phone is showing version 1.3.3.14 and re-freshing app world doesn't give an update to 2.0.... but... my app looks exactly like the screen shot in this article. There was mention of a UI revamp. Could someone who used the app prior tell me if the picture in this article is supposed to be the new version or old? Maybe I have 2.0 but its reporting as 1.3.3.14?

synwars

1.3.3.14 kept showing up on BBAW, not the new 2.0 version. A soft reset didn't work for me either, so I tried pulling the battery. It worked after that.

jvictor77

Did the same - no dice!

zrobert

I love the app and use it all the time. The only thing that needs to be added before I drop my GPS completely is "Avoid Toll Roads".

cjb44

It's still pretty acurate, but when it comes to city driving it gives the easiest or most direct route. Neither are the most efficient. Although I have found it to be very acurate in the suburbs.

The new interface is easier to use and I like the additional options.
