OS 4.7.1.57

Over the weekend Sprint released OS 4.7.1.57 for its customers, and unfortunately the rest of the Tour owners were left in the dust. Well it looks like the OS is now available for all users to download. Some slight improvements on this one, so if you haven't made the jump to 5.0 you may want to check it out. You can grab it from the BlackBerry Software Download page.

Why wireless update if you have to do it through computer?

By: tsmyth | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:00

wtf is this

By: BrianFTC | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:07

From the thread for Sprint's Update, it seems many have experienced some oddness after upgrading to this version. If there is no significant improvement, can we just skip this and wait for 5.0? Upgrading OS is such a time consuming process!

By: vballer | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:07

Isn't it best to wait for the official 5.0 OS release?

By: yacoby54 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 12:06

Sure it might be best to wait for the official 5.0 release but when is it going to be released? There is no official word so in the meantime there is no harm in upgrading.

The links in the article all specify Tour for Sprint?
Will this work on a VZW Tour? My desktop manager (Mac) says no updates available.

By: DarkStar50 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:13

I have same info as mbs: no updates for Verizon from Desktop Manager.

By: Trelaina | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:19

Maybe that's just because I'm checking from work with all the firewalls they have...will check again from home later.

By: Trelaina | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:24

the links specifically take you to a Sprint download page...

By: paulm08 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:20

I am not getting the new update either

By: markanthony | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:25

I downloaded from BBerry link and the file says "Sprint" in it, as well as the BBery download link, which says: "Software Download for Sprint L.P." Can this be used on VZW? Anyone have luck installing?

By: zzzbullseye | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:43

Yes it can be used on any carrier's Tour.

# Install instruction to load any carrier 9630 OS on your BB:

1. Download desired OS to your PC
2. Install/run OS to PC
3. Delete vendor.xml file. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Connect the BB to Desktop Manager and it should prompt the upgrade. If not click Loader.exe and that should initialize it.
5. Do not unplug your BB during the process. It will take around 30-60 minutes to complete the upgrade

Says Sprint in title, also no updates show in DM (Mac) and OTA?? - ever going to be utilized??

By: Jonezed7 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:37

I guess I will till the official 5.0 release.

By: calikola | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:39

What's the point of even releasing Mac Desktop Manager if official OS updates are only going to be released in .exe format?

Very big FAIL on RIM's part.

By: dabrownklown | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:46

If it's only for Sprint why make the it seem like it's for all Tour's? If anyone downloaded it into their Verizon Tour I'd like to know how it went for you..

By: Mirlen | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:51

This update on my Sprint Tour 9630 corrected the problem where GPS was not working with Google Maps app. Very worth the trouble just to get that work'n for me... :)

By: zzzbullseye | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 10:52

For those of you whining about this release...this announcement by CB is no different than any other OS upgrade announcement. It's a carrier specific release that can be applied to other carrier's phones by removing the vendor.xml file. Sprint just happened to be first this time. Follow the link below and instructions:

http://forums.crackberry.com/f141/newest-9630-os-v4-7-1-57-official-spri...

By: Trelaina | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:01

if it sounds like whining, but I am new to Blackberry and trying to understand this whole upgrade process. I'm sure others are in the same boat...trying to figure out why a new upgrade would be announced that we cannot see on Desktop Manager.

If it's "released for all Tours" then I assume that just means RIM is letting anyone download it? What triggers Desktop Manager to "see" the update...is it the carrier (Verizon in my case), RIM, or something else?

I'm trying to determine what the best approach is to getting these updates when they are announced. I'm pretty tech savvy but again, new to BB, so I don't want to start manually upgrading if I risk bricking my phone purely because I'm missing some knowledge.

Thanks Crackberry for all your help to us new BB addicts.

Wow...

RIM makes the most craptastic phone in the world and it takes them this long to release new software for it?

Tour = FAIL

By: mciriello | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:02

Sure you can install it on a VZ Tour by deleting the vendor.xml file, but there's not point. Most recent VZ version is only 3 months old.

By: MaryJane197 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:09

Well reading this
" Well it looks like the OS is now available for all users to download. " mislead me into thinking that there was a seperate verison for all other carriers as well. Looking on blackberrys website, it seems not. I dont want to have to delete my vendor file just to upgrade my OS. I will wait until its a offical release for VZ.

By: SBerryTour | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:11

Just wondering how you arrive at your conclusion 'Tour = FAIL'.

Please post findings and experience with the phone.

By: dusteater | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:46

Well... Let's start with the biggest issue. The trackball. I have gone through 3 Tours so far, all with bad trackballs.

The keyboard in my opinion is very poor. I have been using Blackberries for well over 5 years and have never had a worse keyboard. My my recent BB was an 8830 WE, which has the best keyboard of all. The issue with the Tour is, first of all, it is too small and the other issue is the keys have depressions on the corner instead of ridges.

So, on the software side, the phone does seem a bit slow. It doesn't need battery pulls as much as my 8830 did, but I still have to every so often.

By: ejjanczy | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 14:55

I also have gone thru 3 Sprint Tours since they first came out and I NEVER had any trackball issues. The first one only had the loose battery cover must be something wrong with the very first batches made.

My first two bricked on me so I took it to Sprint and they gave me a one. I think this new version with the latest Slacker radio app bricked it, don't quote me on this. The third time it bricked again so I took the jump to the latest ver 5.0.0.230. Any new app version upgraded in the past month should run on 5. Plus the hangups I've been having on 4.7 with the camera is gone on the latest 5

Minus the problems stated above I love my Tour. I do like the keyboard a lot better than the 8830 which I hated to type on that thing the gaps between the keys are too wide for me and I keep on pressing between the keys a lot. But that's my two cents worth.

It says "Downloading BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.7.1.110 (Multilanguage)" on the download page provided. ??? .110 not .57

By: The Fuzz 53 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:44

Very misleading headline. Any ideas when VZW will post this for download from their site?

By: angloman | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:44

Okay, for those of you who don't understand how to update properly, read this guide.
http://www.crackberry.com/blackberry-101-how-install-or-upgrade-new-rim-...

Crackberry.com said that the OS is available for all tours, but the actual release came from Sprint. They said that because last week it was released only to sprint phones and nobody else could download it. Now, everyone else can download it, but it still comes as an update from Sprint, that's why they said to delete your vendor.xml file. If you would have read the guide that was posted with the link, you would have understood that.

Not all updates come like this. When your carrier releases an official update for your phone, it will automatically apply the update when you connect your phone to desktop manager and click update.

By: trmoney24 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 12:16

hey man, if i do the update this way, will it still be completely automated? like in dekstop manager, it backes up my info and restores everything, including my 3rd party apps and homes screen icons. i remember back in the days when we had to download and install the OS upgrade ourselves we had to manually backup everything.

By: zzzbullseye | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 12:52

If you download and install the exe from RIM it should install to this location "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader". Upon launch, the Desktop Manager checks this location for available updates and should signal that an update is available (backups should be performed by DM as a part of the upgrade). If it doesn't present you with an upgrade option, you can manually launch it by executing the Loader.exe file located in the folder listed above - if you do it this way, you'll want to perform all your backups prior to upgrading.

Be sure to delete the "vendor.xml" file unless you're a Sprint customer, otherwise you'll end up with Sprint wallpapers, app shortcuts, etc.

Here are the basic steps again:

By: trmoney24 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 13:47

thanks for the clarification. i tried doing it through DM, it picks up the newer version that is on my computer, but when i hit next, it says no update is needed for my phone. i did the .53 update a while when it was available for a 1, so not sure if that is making it think i have the latest, even though the newer one is .57. I would do it through loader.exe but i don't want to deal with the manual back-up/restore process, having to reinstall my 3rd party apps, and setting up my home screen icons again.

By: MaryJane197 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 12:25

Well if i do it the way angloman has explained will it void my warranty? Makes no sense that if its it the same update for each provider why Verizon doesnt have thier own link and vendor file to this update.

By: tentonbricks | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 12:33

...who are on Sprint and/or who use a PC.

Verizon users on Macs, don't bother.

By: MaryJane197 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 13:08

Well i downloaded Sprints update. Deleted the vendor file. My desktop manager wouldnt read that i had updates available. So i clicked the loader app and it never would run. Then i opened up the desktop manager and tried to browse to the file to do it that way. It says not compatable. So is this something that works with Verizon Tour? Has anyone gotten this to work on thier Verizon Tour?

EDIT: i finally after rebooting got the Loader.exe file to run. I backed up everything in case something happens and i need to restore.

By: cupcakeprincess84 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 13:27

I got my tour on VZW to DL it :)

By: trmoney24 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 13:48

when you install it through the loader.exe method, did you have to manually restore your data and 3rd party apps?

By: cupcakeprincess84 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 18:24

I think the only one was facebook... it backed everything up like nothing ever happend :)

By: lilchoi26 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 12:58

Are there any reasons or advantages to use this over 5.0.0.230? It seems like the disadvantages of using 5.0 are gone with BBM, facebook, etc working now.

By: spektr00 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 13:04

This does not work for the TELUS Tour, or am I missing something?

By: BlkBryAddict | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 13:22

TOTALLY WEAK.

By: trmoney24 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 13:52

I luckily got .53 during that 1 day period. is there any difference on .57 from .53?

By: Jack Smash | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 14:12

great

By: fobrob102 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 14:46

so how would you do this with mac desktop manager? you'd think they'd stop releasing JUST .exe's

come on now RIM

By: nkdubya | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 14:53

I have yet to see anybody post about being successful on a VZW Tour, also my IT guy said not to do any updates without checking with him as it will possibly mess up my e-mail, I was talking to him about 5.0 os but still I would like to upgrade but am apprehensive

By: trmoney24 | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 16:39

yah if you are using BES then you always have to check with your IT team before any upgrades. doing the upgrade without consulting them may stop your emails and they might even have to downgrade you to get it working again.

By: SureStoreX | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 15:51

:(

By: Goodniz | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 16:17

Before the upgrade was released I had issues with the new BBM. Since upgrading the OS, the new BBM works flawlessly.

By: hestes | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 16:41

nevermind...

By: krssosic | Date: Wed, 10/14/2009 - 17:15

Yeah, so I plug my phone into my pc, DM loads up, and says its updating my phone. After 10 mins, my phone resets. once it boots up EVERYTHING IS GONE!!!! It took me through the intial setup process! The only thing I see that's still on my phone is my aol email....however I cannot locate the actual inbox anywhere!!! when i get an email only the messages folder indicates it. also my BBM isn't there. so it didn't even restore it to factory defaults. WTF!!!???? any help? and no...I didn't back up my bb, because when i clicked on the update button it said it would automatically backup my data during the upgrade process. -sigh- I know a wipe is just that, a wipe...but has anyone experienced this? am I Sh*t out of luck or is there anyway to get my things back(without starting from scratch)

By: MaryJane197 | Date: Thu, 10/15/2009 - 09:26

I had this happen to me recently. I wasnt able to get any of my stuff back. I had to start over from scratch. I lost alot of phone numbers i cant get back. Luckily my most important contacts i had on my facebook account. I decided i was going to start backing up contacts , calendar events and tasks on my SD card because of this. My BBM didnt initially show up for me either. It was archived on my phone. After i downloaded Blackberry App World most of my apps showed up as archived and i was able to restore them. It was a very weird thing.
