Following closely in the footsteps of Rogers, Telus announced via Twitter that they too will be offering the BlackBerry Torch 9800 on September 24th. Both Canadian carriers are set to release now on the same day making for lots of happy folks. Unlike Rogers however, Telus made no mention of the pricing in their release, but it's a pretty safe bet to say it will stick to the $199/3-year pricing scheme. TELUS to offer New BlackBerry Torch Smartphone on Canada's fastest mobile network in September

Combines New Touch Screen Experience with Easy-To-Use Keyboard First to Feature New BlackBerry 6 with Rich WebKit Browser

Toronto, ON - TELUS today announced it is targeting September 24th for the launch of the new BlackBerry TorchTM 9800 smartphone on Canada's fastest mobile network*. Designed especially for socially connected consumers and packed with the tools business customers love, the new handset offers elegant styling with top-of-the-line features and functionality. It's the world's first smartphone to combine a BlackBerry keyboard with a full touch screen experience and the first to feature the new BlackBerry 6.0 operating system.

"Both business and consumer customers will get an incredible mobile experience from the new BlackBerry Torch smartphone," said Brent Johnston, vice-president of Mobility Solutions at TELUS. "TELUS is pleased to bring the BlackBerry Torch to Canadians, which will allow them to easily stay connected, entertained and informed wherever they are while running on our blazing fast 3G+ network."

The new BlackBerry Torch redefines what's exciting about BlackBerry smartphones by combining a large capacitive touch screen and optical trackpad with a 35-key full QWERTY backlit slide-out keyboard, designed to feel optimally balanced when opened for typing. It offers support for high-speed 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) networks around the world, includes the latest generation of Wi-Fi (b/g/n) connectivity and built-in GPS for location-based applications and geo-tagging. Its 5 MP camera takes exceptional pictures with continuous auto focus, image stabilization, 11 scene modes and zoom, as well as video recording. It also comes with a combined 8 GB of media storage out-of-the-box, including a microSD/SDHD memory card slot that can bring the total storage memory to 36 GB for customers that want more.

The BlackBerry Torch is the first to launch with BlackBerry 6.0, a new operating system for BlackBerry smartphones. It features a redesigned interface, and a new and rich WebKit-based browser that renders HTML web pages (as well as HTML email) quickly and beautifully for a great browsing experience. The browser includes tabs for accessing multiple sites simultaneously, double-tap to zoom that can intelligently wrap text in a column while maintaining the placement of a page's key elements, and pinch to zoom.

BlackBerry 6 offers expanded messaging capabilities and RSS feeds, which provides integrated access to the popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBMTM) service as well as Facebook, TwitterTM, MySpaceTM and various instant messaging applications. The enhanced multimedia experience includes a dedicated YouTube app, and BlackBerry Podcasts, allowing users to easily discover, acquire and enjoy audio and video podcasts from leading content providers. A universal search feature, accessible from the Home Screen, allows users to search for content on the smartphone, as well as extend the search to the Internet or to discover applications on BlackBerry App WorldTM, which is included. TELUS is excited to be the first carrier in Canada to offer clients the ability to pay for their BlackBerry App WorldTM purchases on their mobile phone bill as well as through credit card payment. This ability will be available prior to the BlackBerry Torch launch.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 available from Telus on September 24th

I'm trying to figure out which phone from Telus i really want right now..I love the BB and everything about it and have been eagerly awaiting this release, but at the same time, i'm disappointed they didn't release better hardware on the Torch. I've been contemplating the HTC Desire, and although it will take alot of work and messing with (rooting, finding efficient apps etc), i believe it could be ALMOST as functional, but with better hardware(not to mention $79 vs $199). I've had my Storm 1 for over a year now, and feel like the Torch is almost the same phone but with a little better hardware, same screen, and a slide out keyboard. Decisions decisions..

Rickroller, the Desire is worth every penny and rooting isn't hard at all; just grabbing unrevoker3 and a recovery image and letting it install for 2 minutes and you're rooted. it is also very functional. PM me if you ever get one and decide to root, I got a link of a guide.

Also the price difference is a nobrainer, $79/449 vs $199/499, sheesh. Or even -$50 for the Desire with a mail-in rebate if you have to wait for backorders.

The way I see it, the faster OS6 devices are released, the faster they will release it to the 9700. The early adopters will rush to the Torch then I figure November or Jan we will get OS6

With Telus, don't expect OS 6 on any other devices besides the Torch and perhaps the 9780 until next spring, it was written somewhere (Q1 2011), Telus are really slow at OS updates.

Pushing this junk phone is gunna kill blackberry... With apple releasing a mp3 player with a better processor and screen. This thing anit even HD... Why? They better hope this "Blackpad" and "Storm 3" are huge leaps forward. Because this is to horrible now... I might drop my bb for an Ipod Touch... How if I was telus I would send them back and turn into a apple re-tailer

First of all, why would you drop BB for an ipod touch? You mean iphone???? Also, people have blackberry's for a reason. Usually business minded people or people who do alot of emailing. iPhones are garbage when it comes to emailing and quality of conversations. High schoolers own iPhones.

Having said that, i have to agree with you that BB is cheaping out on the hardware... Rim needs to step it up.

Does anyone REALLY give a crap about this thing? Good job on releasing CRAP...

iPhone is looking better and better every day...

Curse you T-MoRons!!! When is T-Mobile gonna get with this!! T-Mobile you "unhip" phone selling garbage!! DOH!! I am soo angry!! Glad my contracts up in December!! Hasta La Vista Baby!!

I am a lil upset that the Torch doesnt at least have a 1G processor or on board memory! Also would like to see HD camera. New Blackberry Wants:
1. Faster processor (at least 1G)
2. At least 1G onboard memory
3. Ability to download and run apps from micro sd card (not just store the app when not using as is the function today)
4. Different BBM icons, the current ones are like 1980 icons.
5. HD camera (some phones already have hd capabilities)
6. New Folder icons for when you create a new folder on home screen to store stuff like apps and things.
