BlackBerry Storm OS Upgrade Sorta "Officially" Available??
I just received this email from no-reply@upgrade.blackberry.com:
If you're a Storm owner and have opted in to receive notifications on OS updates (option you check off in Desktop Manager), expect to see one of these emails in your inbox. You'll want to follow the forum discussion and comments on this one though folks, as while this notification was sent out which seems to indicate an OS update is available for the Storm it doesn't quite seem to actually be available (and shouldn't this long-awaited update be coming via OTA?!). Word in the forums seems to indicate that Verizon's update is coming on the 8th. No worries though - you can always grab the leaked version of OS4.7.0.75 if you can't wait. You can watch for Storm updates at the Worldwide Storm Update Site or at Verizon's BlackBerry Software Site.

Cool, you folks that have a Storm will sure enjoy this!
Where's the OTA?!?! OTA?!?! OTA?!?!
Exactly! Where's the OTA? Why would anyone have to download and then install this update when these new devices supposedly have over the air updates? I"m a little confused on this.
After a nasty discussion with Verizon Tech Support, the update will come around 8 Dec. Yeah, right, think I really want to wait that friggin' long? Don't even think about to do what I just tried, get a replacement phone due to the obviously large gaps between the keys, the screen and the case. Too much light leaks through and is annoying as heck! Any defective device, you're out of luck until Jan 15th per Verizon. Though new customers MIGHT see their phone by Dec 15th. So much for the love, I wonder why that is. Simple, they're trying to avoid returns by claiming insufficient supply and not show a decrease in sales margin for the holidays. This is the biggest lump of coal ever and it doesn't work right!
You all will love this too: Verizon claims that I am the first one to complain about the phone, even Tech Support claims they are not getting any calls on the Storm. Hmmm really?? Something smells fishy there. The Tech Support really irked me when the lady started to challenge me on the concerns I had about the phone. She was literally denying what I experienced straight out of the box. I'm simply over it! I never thought Verizon would be rude to a customer that has 4 accounts with them. Am I angry? You bet! I'm angry at RIM for shoddy product, and Verizon for shoddy customer service. Now we wait for Dec 8 for an update?? What a joke!
If you go into the options menu and go to Advanced Options, scroll to the bottom and click on Wireless Upgrade. Here you can check for upgraded software directly from the phone. I'm sure that OTA updates will be very possible in light of this, it just seems to be a matter of when.
I HAVE A QUESTION MY STORM SHIPPED OUT TODAY CAUSE VERIZON MOVING FAST ON THERE ORDERS ITS GONNA BE HERE TOMORROW WILL IT BE UPDATED?
Doubt it.
I have read the update process and I would rather wait. I have checked the site you mentioned above and nothing happens.
I thought that this was going to be done on the 8th???
Thank you for keeping us in the loop as always:)
I was told the 8th too, but I called yesterday (12/1/08) and they said that my ship date was pushed up to the 5th and I should receive it in 2 business days.
It tells me "my device is running the latest available software"
But i have OS .65 and Plt .82 (pretty sure this isn't the latest....
I upgrade last night to the "leaked" .75 update. When I go to get the official one, the DM recognizes that I have .75 but indicates the .56 is still 'preferred' and the default prompt falls to the .65 box (trying to get me to revert to the 'preferred' firmware.
Nothing there. I aborted.
Mine has the same and from what we are hearing this isn't true....besides your way of updating has anyone actually got an update from the blackberry or Verizon site?
Just curious...and anxious to knock out some of the bugs:)
sorry....I meant to say .65 (not .56)
Just close the DM and reopen it and when it checks for updates it will find it, even if you have the leaked verision it will update to the offical release, and it is very sweeeeet
Legolus
This post is premature. It's not updated yet.
It's not a premature post Mr. Anonymous. I posted on the email I received...not the availability of the official update. That's why there's a question mark in the title and that's why I post the email received and to follow the forum discussion.
Just keeping people updated to the news....
I am in Boston, and at 7:30 PM, the blackberry site said no updates available. Maybe it will come later tonight.
I'm still waiting for the OTA update if thats going to happen. My storm functions good without the update.
Where the heck is the OTA!? Nobody has any news???
Not available yet for vodafone storm 9500
I tried the link you posted , got the upgrade page, but the upgrade manager said "no software available".. I double-checked my os and it is still .65 Thoughts?
Can't seem to get it to update.
I haven't received as of yet either. Went to Blackberry site and it will not update there. Are they phasing this across the country?

It went through the motions of updating - but when I checked my status it still said .65. It might be just in my head - but this thing is moving much smoother than it was prior to that though...
Hey everyone, I stopped off at a VZW store to pick up a car charger for my Storm and played with a couple of their demos. Guess what? One of them had OS .76 on it. That should be comin soon hopefully. For sure gonna be the OS on the next batch they ship out. Gonna head back their tommorow to get some pictures.

WAY too many complaints with people running the leaked .75 OS, and trying to update to Legit .75 OS. Storm is getting slower! Sounds like a nightmare... I'm staying away until .76 or later comes out... BTW-- the forums are going to be mayhem. Its getting unreal in there!
When the hell are the forums coming back on line?
I know. I feel your pain. The tech guys are working on it. Thought we had it licked but apparently not. Stupid Gremlins are at work.
Thanks for the patience. Will hopefully be good to go soon.
I've been loading Firefox all day, and getting a 404. I just tried IE, and it works! :( Glah, I'm not surfing with IE.
When I go to the link and click on the update button my computer goes through checking my device and etc, but then I get this thing about a "Fatal Error" is anyone else getting that?

Ok. I get it now. First, the "storm" of the rush at the store to get the phone. Then the "storm" of controversy by blackberry faithful over how well it works. Now the "storm" of bloggers wanting the update. I think they nailed it on the name. I also am ashamed to say I am totally addicted to crackberry!!

ok i so i dont get when the real version of the .75 or .76 is coming out and if the "leaked" version is crappy or not because i dont see that much of a difference with the "leaked" version so can anyone answer that?
Kevin, I ordered my storm the 21st it shipped out the 2 of december what software u think will b on it?
I upgraded my phone last wednesday to the lg dare and im sending it back (piece of junk) and vzw in being nice enough to send me the new storm! this is going to be my 1st blackberry device though ive had several windows mobile phones (wm stinks too)!
So, being this will be my first blackberry, i hope i enjoy it, and this site seems to have alot of good info!
I was also wondering if anyone knows of a app for the storm that will work like the G1 and scan barcodes to shop prices?
thanks!
Hey, Nokia N97 is set out to be released in 2009. This smartphone will really blow your mind. Forget the BlackBerry Storm, Apple iPhone and Google G1. Nokia N97 will rule smartphones all around the world.. check out N97 features @ http://smartphone-guru.blogspot.com/2008/12/nokia-n97-ultimate-winner-am...
Hahahaha erm nooooooo it wont, it'll be too expensive
Yes, I get the "Fatal Error" message as well!
Ok, no problem with the upgrade but it's not stable as hoped for. Still have "white screen/rebooting" issues with one of the phones occuring, the bug with the bluetooth not functioning and causing a silent connect using "speed dialing", the flipping freezing in place at times, and in phone function recieving a call a delay in connecting for the display to show up interupting the voice ....so no these are not good phones even with this 'FIX'..give me a break. RIM/Verizon needs to get busy...fast.
Someone else said what I am feeling this morning and I quote here so that maybe someone from Verizon or RIM will see it: Who is running RIM and Verizon??? It seems as if two dudes in thier mothers garage are running them. What other companies put out a crappy product and then to get an update you have to scour forums to find the new release of firmware? Unbelievable.
hey everybody...i'm running the leaked version of .75 and am having all the same problems as before, namely my phone freezing up when i begin to record a video and requiring me to remove the battery in order to reboot the phone...this is only one of a dozen problems i'm having with this trainreck...is it possible for me to update to the legit .75 OS and if so where do i get the real version?
I have to say, Kevin has to take a little bit of blame for hyping the Storm based on nothing more than a few warm words from RIM. His posts about how awesome typing on the Storm would be turned out just to be a lot of hot air once the device was in people's hands.
I'm all for enthusiasm for a phone and a company, but I think everyone who hyped this thing - RIM, Verizon, Crackberry.com etc. - presented misleading info to the rest of us who wanted to believe.
Folks need to take a chill pill. Are there issues? Sure there are. Would it be nice if Verizon/RIM gave us some straight answers? Yup. But it does work and I'm 150% sure that once the updates are delivered the Storm will be what it should have been from the start.
Also, for anyone that's having major issues typing, go to options and in the screen/keyboard settings set key rate to fast, tap interval to 100, hover period to 100, and swipe sensitivity to 6. I found that this makes typing quickly in either mode much easier as it seems to compensate a little bit for the lag. Once again, with OS updates I expect this to get even better.
Perhaps the chill pill should have been taken by the people hyping the device before it was launched. I think dumping an unfinished, buggy device on people was pretty shameful and shoddy. It has really dented my faith in RIM and in the credibility of all those who talked up the Storm with their early sneak peaks.
I'll have to respectfully disagree with you on this point. People who had an opportunity to review pre-release units (some of which were running higher versions of the OS) wrote their reviews based on what they saw and with the assumption that, given RIM's prior history of releasing polished devices, any bugs that they came across would be fixed by release time. In no way could they have anticipated that last minute software glitches and build quality issues (mine has a pinpoint light leak between the end and back keys) would lead to a less than stellar release. To their credit (and certainly Kevin's), most early reviewers clearly stated, in one way or another, that they were projecting their expectations based in part on past experience and that the hype should be taken with a grain of salt.
That being said, I do agree that Verizon and RIM would have been better off by delaying the release a few weeks to finish the OS. If at all possible, they should have pulled the plug on 11/21 and never handed "release-ready" units for reviewers to bash on 11/20 (this alone makes me believe that they had time to push the release back). So, leave the bloggers and tech-writers out of it. Most of them are doing info-hungry consumers a favor and possibly changing near-term purchasing decisions (I would have gotten a Curve had I not found out about the Storm). And anyhow, what have they to gain from hyping a product that they actually think will be crap?
I'm not saying they had anything to gain from hyping it, just that they allowed themselves to be manipulated by RiM and Verizon. The fact of the matter is, the Storm still isn't ready for prime time, and we were told - by people we trust - that typing on this thing was awesome. It isn't, not even close.
RIM was under pressure to release the Storm by the holidays, and they must have known it wasn't ready, so instead of fixing it, they hyped it to high heaven just to garner some buzz. I think that's a breach of trust, and I hope that, in future, early bird reviewers stick to the facts rather than what they hope the device will finally look like.
