Good riddance.

Seriously though, that country is a close second to China.

Posted by ArgonNJ Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Not even close! Pakistan and other Islamic countries are far worse then China ever hopes to be.

Posted by Spawn12 Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

LOL its comments like above that make me laugh...no one come close to the China when it comes to censoring stuff...only reason why Pak has done this is to let things cool down due to the uproar about some pictures being drawn of a religious figure in islam.

Good call if it stops the extremists/terrorists from getting themselves into a frenzy about it and therefore planning more attacks against the West.

My time spent in the region was military affiliated, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. Thailand recently as well. So please, spare me the "Have you been there??" comments.

Posted by bbaddict9700 Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Are you for real ....
Agreed that, the other countries that you've mentioned have been affected with certain amount of instability.
But India?!
Get real for once, and stop using random countries (as in India) for your argument.
Till date, India hasn't had any foreign troops in its territory, so I wont spare you the question "Have you been there?!"
You might have been there as a tourist (which by the way, India is one of the best tourist destinations in the world) but not as a military affiliated person.

Posted by cenloe Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Just because you dont think it happened doesnt mean it didnt. I am no longer in the military but I once was, and my time in India was not as a tourist. Just because you consider India stable doesnt mean they dont share training, information, equipment, intelligence, etc. Quite frankly our military is in places you would never imagine doing things you dont want to know about.

Posted by bbaddict9700 Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

You have written in that way, I will have to accept it as the truth.
There's no denying that we have military coalitions with other countries, and I'm not at all denying that as I have friends that work in those places.
But when you had stated the earlier comment, it sounded like you were trying to put India in the list of countries that were similar to China (which is why I objected).
But yes, I strongly believe India is far stable than its neighbors, and for that I'm proud!
I'm quite sure your military is in places that I would never imagine it to be in.
You've got that right!
Cheers!

Curious, where are some of troops in the places that I would never imagine? In Swaziland?

All because of "Draw Mohammad Day" too. What the hell is wrong with them?

Posted by luqman24 Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Because its against the muslim religion and Pakistan is a muslim country. Muslim people find this offensive because its not allowed, in Islam, with no excuses or no exceptions to mimic or predict how Prophet Muhammad looks like or any Prophet that is. I myself am a muslim and find that offensive. Its disrespecting him in many ways. And Prophet Muhammad is the last and chosen Prophet by God. So if anybody who is wondering why this is big issue or believes that this "Draw Muhammad Day" is not a big deal to Muslim counties and People, this should answer your question :)

Posted by bbaddict9700 Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Any sense at all ...
I'm not at all denying what you've said, and I too am of the opinion that people should respect others religion.
My question is what's banning of this (as in BB services) got to do with any of the "inappropriate cartoons" that has been the center of a huge controversy?!
The whole world is going Topsy-turvy!
Simply finding a reason to shut down the whole country and preventing growth, which to be honest is quite similar to China's control over privacy and what not!
Crazy I say!
Absolutely bonkers!

Posted by luqman24 Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

I knew that that wasn't what this arguement about. I was just explain to other people who are curious of why these drawings are a big deal to Muslim nations. Anyways, I don't know what the reason behind this was either lol. If they were trying to avoid these drawings from reaching out to the rest of the world through the Internet, they might as well have banned any other connection to the internet ie. ISPs. Don't know why they chose BIS but as long as I have mine working i'm fine haha.

Posted by taimuramjad Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

First of all the ban was on facebook and youtube to block the "blasphemous content" (not BIS).

BBs connect through BIS via RIM servers mostly in europe for the Pakistani GSM operators who offer BB service. so long as BIS remained active the local operators were unable to completely block facebook and related sites that carried the contest and the cartoons. in order to fully implement the ban the operators blocked the BIS services but the email functionality is still fully operational.

It is also expected that the temporary ban on facebook will be lifted after 31st May. lets see.

And all this over an imaginary figure. Quite frankly, I find religion in general extremely offensive. Can we please get a ban on all things religious? The world would be a MUCH better place...

Posted by neoman1314 Thursday, May 27, 2010 727 days ago

Not be so ignorant please? Last I checked, people had a right(Well, at least in the States) to practice what ever religion they choose. How about we stop being pigs, and accept everyones difference, and just, live? Yet, instead we have to be hateful and spiteful, which doesn't help anything. It just escalates it all. So please refrain from posting such nasty comments on a fairly respected site.

A cartoon is supposed to amuse people, but seems that the decision makers are pretty conservative and regressive.

I suggest a pre-paid sim cards from abroad with bis activated and used only trough wifi in Pakistan as a work around. There's bound to be plenty corporations on bes that's gonna kick off. It's so stupid tho, it's like banning all cars cuz somebody used one commiting a crime.

its annoying to say the least, not to have BIS. but we can get emails and BBM's working, EDGE services aren't working, so no apps.
Also, Pakistan is taking a stance. I'm against the ban and i believe that's not the way to go...but its just sad that people are proud of offending the Muslims, their religious ideologies and beliefs, and then pointing fingers when they react.
no Muslim drew a picture mocking any of the religion. Don't know why we are targeted, then we have to suffer the consequences as well.
Its just sad to say the least :)

Posted by Rob.Elliott Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

The 'everybody draw Muhammad day' wasn't about offending Muslims. It was about defending freedom of expression/speech. The reason Islam was targeted is because whenever somebody draws Muhammad they receive death threats which are sometimes acted upon, as in the case of Theo van Gogh.
A new bout of death threats to the creators of South Park from a group known as Revolution Muslim provoked 12 000 people on the internet to draw Muhammad as an act of defiance in the face of these threats.

Posted by hassaan Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Dear Rob.
When you Draw Mohammad, you ARE targeting Muslims. What is the need to draw him despite the fact that it is known that it is one of the fundamental "NO"s in our religion. This is something really dear and near to our hearts, and we believe that drawings and depictions should not be made. Do we go around doing that? no! Do we go around and draw other religious personalities? No! and no religion or freedom of speech gives you right to depict anyone in the way caricatures have been made and posted on the "everybody Draw Mohammad Day" page THAT IS TARGETING!! especially if you have never even seen or read up about the man. i sincerely request you to read up on him. there must be some reason why he has been called the greatest human being to have ever lived, over and over again. and threats have come after a refusal to understand our position. threats should not come, thats a different issue. I am not going to debate on the reaction Southpark and Theo Van Gogh received for that matter. but why did they have to draw something that they know is a "sensitive" issue? was it THAT important?

Posted by gambiting Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

I was born a christian, but I don't want to kill anybody who offends Jesus. Whereas in your religion, people are not only allowed, but it is anticipated if they threaten somebody with death upon drawing your prophet. It's in my opinion animal-like behaviour. The only way to show you how stupid it is, is to show you how you behave if somebody does draw him. And I've read about Muhammad and no, I don't respect anybody who has sex with 9 year old girls. There were many man that were called greatest people who ever lived - Stalin for example. In fact, he is still belived to be a great leader by some people in Russia, but he was a monster none the less.

I believe that all religions are a threat to peace, because they divide people for the better and the worse ones, for such STUPID reasons as drawing a picture of somebody. Isn't that insane?

Posted by Rob.Elliott Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

The people who drew Muhammad do not subscribe to Islam, and should not be constrained by it's customs.

Now, I'm not going to defend the content of some of those pictures, which I also found distasteful, however I will defend the right for people to express their views without being threatened with physical violence. That is the point behind 'everybody draw Muhammad day' Sometimes my views will offend you, sometimes yours will offend me. Neither of us deserve to fear for our lives because others disagree with us. Without defying the threats any protest would be a rather empty gesture.

Offending Muslims in general was an unfortunate by product of this protest, but defending this fundamental human right really is worth that price.

Posted by omz69 Tuesday, May 25, 2010 729 days ago

When you attack black people, they call it racism. When you attack Jewish people, they call it anti semetism. When you attack women, they call it sexism. When you attack homosexuality, they call it intolerance. When you attack your country, they call it treason. When you attack a religious sect, they call it hate speech. But when they attack the Prophet Mohamed , they want to call it freedom of speech.. !

Posted by Rob.Elliott Wednesday, May 26, 2010 728 days ago

The protest was about attacking censorship, censorship which is enforced with violent threats.

You're missing the point.

This news was just a hoax, the BIS was down temporarily due to technical reasons which people linked to this banning. My office members use BIS and we are not facing any kind of trouble or issues.

As for the banning of other sites n stuff, only those can understand this when they love someone and that person is insulted :) for say Mr X loves her gf n if i draw stupid images or cartoons of her, it might amuse me n others but not Mr X n not even his gf :P

I grew up in a very strict religious household and because of that I am not longer spiritual at all and don't care about religions or spirituality at all but I do recognize the right for individuals to practice whatever religion they choose to practice and to be tolerant of others beliefs. But we all know that will never happen because every religion or sect of a religion believes they are right and everyone else is wrong. Some have gone to the point of killing millions of people in past history or current times to make their point. It really is a sad world we live in when people have no sense of humor at all when what they believe is made fun of but has no problem when another persons beliefs are made of next. Just another reason why I view all religions hypocritical.

It's easy for the muslims today to play the victim but for me it's hard to forget my country was oppressed for hundreds of years by the ottoman empire, also muslims. Probably millions of romanians died defending the country against the Turks so sorry, no sympathy from me.

Bad people do really bad things for power and money, it effects common mass.

No one want to live like 1200 BC, but common mass is like flock of sheep, stupid shepard takes them where ever he wishes.

Posted by saqer Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Here's a little perspective from someone who won't make rash comments and pass one-sided judgments.

0. Censorship is wrong on all forms, but so is purposely insulting a group of people under the guise of free speech.

1. Muslims hold dear to their hearts Muhammad, sometimes more than themselves. Mocking or insulting him is sort of like insulting someone's mother or father. People do take it personally. Yes, getting all violent and foam mouthed isn't an appropriate response, but mind you, most Muslims don't react like that. There are approximately 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide. If the majority of them were to act like that then wars would've been started. People need to stop blowing things out of proportion.

2. You don't get to decide what insults someone and what doesn't. In the workplace sexual harassment is more a function of personal perception than it is what everyone else thinks; that's why everyone is careful what they say or do. Similarly, you insult Muhammad, you're insulting Muslims whether you think they should be insulted or not.

3. Crying freedom of speech in this instance is a joke in this instance because no one would dare draw or republish any Nazi propaganda depicting 'the stereotypical Jew'

4. Religion is not S@#% as some people like to point out. People who pretend to practice that religion might be. Just because you have a narrow and unfortunate set of experiences that has upset you, doesn't mean that religion hasn't benefited many, many other people. In this case Pakistan censoring facebook, youtube, BIS, or whatever is not in compliance with Islamic laws and values because there is nothing in Islam that dictates an Islamic country must censor something it doesn't like.

Posted by Dezz01 Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Well Said and to add, freedom of speech is only just(ice) to where it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others.

Posted by mechanic_joe Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Very good comment, and I agree whole-heartedly... my only reservation is that once this form of censorship has begun, where does it end? cut all the cable and satellite tv?, cut all the phone lines? I'm glad I'm not making the decisions.

Posted by aghanam Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

This is hilarious, drawing and depicting another religous figure to express freedom of speech is very weak point. How does this empower our freedom of speech. The decision made by Pakistan was a little harsh since it does not eliminate all possible sources for the drawings to get in. But in Reality this 'everybody draw Muhammad day' is a mockery more than an expression. And if you think our freedom of speech is threatened by avoiding this topic, lets try to Talk about the Holocaust and see where our "freedom of speech" takes us.

The holy Prophet means alot to The Muslim Community ,
The following is from Michael Hart's book and lists Prophet Muhammad as the most influential man in History. A Citadel Press Book, published by Carol Publishing Group
Ranking of the twenty from the list of 100:

1. Prophet Muhammad
2. Isaac Newton
3. Jesus Christ
4. Buddha
5. Confucius
6. St. Paul
7. Ts'ai Lun
8. Johann Gutenberg
9. Christopher Columbus
10. Albert Einstein
11. Karl Marx
12. Louis Pasteur
13. Galileo Galilei
14. Aristotle
15. Lenin
16. Moses
17. Charles Darwin

19. Augustus Caesar

Please, religion has been imposed on people for so long now. Do you really think somebody that doesn't believe in Muhammad or Islam can have a life in Pakistan? They would probably be killed in no time. How can they live in a state run on Islamic laws? Denying the existence of Muhammad will get you killed for sure.

Like it or not Freedom is limited to what the justice system say it is.

Posted by Rob.Elliott Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

It empowers our freedom of speech because it sends a clear message that threats from fanatics will not scare or silence us.

It is a non violent act of defiance which will only offend those who choose to be offended.

Posted by aghanam Monday, May 24, 2010 730 days ago

Religion is merely a way of life for people, imposed on some, but a vast majority who migrate to more secular regimes still choose to practice it. Alot of People even convert to it to seek enlightenment. But this is a personal choice. The western world is To some is a safer and easier place to practice their religions that they were born into or learned from in the original countries that they immigrated from. So Religion is not a bad thing, extremism is. And yes i agree it is harder for someone to live in Pakistan if they do not embrace Islam. But this is not the religions fault. In situations like this people tend to discredit Religions and give it full blame of the problem, when in reality, The people are at Fault.

An example of this would be someone stabbing someone else to death, Is the Knife to blame or The person?

Same idea with Religion, it is merely a tool which if interpeted right,it can produce positivity and do good, and if iinterpeted wrong can cause harm.

I live in Pakistan. First of all, before posting something like this, get your facts straight. Blackberry was only banned for a few hours after which it was reactivated. This was only due to the fact that Facebook was to be banned on the Blackberry. It is not because of "their strictness overthere". This perfectly illustrates a lack of general knowledge.

Although, I am completely against the Facebook ban, I do, however, understand why the government did so. The prophet (PBUH) is a highly respected individual in Islam and any depictions of him are strictly prohibited.

As for the freedom of speech issue - this is actually quite amusing. When you attack black people, they call it racism. When you attack Jewish people, they call it anti semitism. When you attack women, they call it sexism. When you attack homosexuality, they call it intolerance. When you attack your country, they call it treason. When you attack a religious sect, they call it hate speech. But when they attack the Prophet (PBUH), they want to call it freedom of speech. It is truly sad how a person is so ruthless and insensitive as to creating such a group that would hurt thousands.

Again, although I am completely against the ban, I am completely shocked and devastated by seeing the lack of humanity that the person who created the group possessed.

I dont appreciate yours and everyone else use of the word "they" with out specifying who they are? Who calls it racism, who calls it antisemtism who calls attactks on the prophet freedom of speech? who are they ??? Before you start making claims I think you should clarify your points. Yes some people are very insensitive but making a series of general statments only makes you appear as insensitive and ignorant as those who participated in draw mohammed day.

And there is no need to clarify "they" at all.

Drawing the Prophet and attacking the Prophet are two different things. It's insulting you are comparing the hateful things Blacks and Gays have endured (real persecution) to the simple drawing of an imaginary (by scientific standards) deity.

You know...as a Muslim, I am in the least bit offended about alleged "graven" images of Mohammad (PBUH). Political satire is political satire. Take it or leave it. What I AM offended by are these hard-line countries who impose on their citizen's civil liberties in order to keep their people in the philosophical Dark Ages.

Posted by digitalb0y Tuesday, May 25, 2010 729 days ago

I wouldn't say that freedom of speech is a good excuse to be disrespectful. We clearly don't just get to go around saying whatever we want in certain situations.

That being said, I don't feel like anyone should get to impose the ideals if his or her religious beliefs on anyone else. If you believe drawing Muhammad is immoral, don't do it. If depictions of him offend you, don't look at him. I'm not saying it's nice of someone to draw something you may find offensive, but you don't get to dictate what other people can or can't do, no matter what you personally believe.

If my own belief system led me to the conclusion that it is wrong to paint cars blue, should I get to make a huge case about how insensitive and inhuman people are for painting a car blue? Of course not! I'm personally offended by crappy syndicated episodes of The Fresh Prince. Does that mean TBS owes me an apology for offending me? Unfortunately, no. It doesn't matter how strongly I believe something is wrong, I don't get to force the rest of the world to regard that action as wrong. What I do get to do is make the choice not to look at it and to focus on things I don't find offensive.

Posted by omerw Tuesday, May 25, 2010 729 days ago

although what has been reported here is very true, it not really is.

As the article say's, facebook has been banned in Pakistan, due to with Blackberry services were also stopped.
but after half a day of service shut down, the services providers worked something out in their services so as to not totally leave the blackberry users hanging.
Although services like facebook, twitter, google maps, etc are still not working on the blackberry devices.
data services via WAP have been switched on for BB users in Pakistan.
Meaning that even while all these services are still no accessible, bb users can use their data service to send and receive emails, BB Messenger and access wap based websites.

I strongly believe in freedom of speech and religion. At the same time, I believe that part of that also includes personal responsibility.

My personal opinion is that the freedoms we have should be governed by our own personal values, while giving respect to others. If you are a Christian, is it "Christian" to attack someone? Maybe the drawings are an attack, per se, but they were done to invoke a negative response.

No matter what your religion or beliefs are, I believe it is human and mature of us to respect peoples' differences and know when to hold our tongue, and when to use our freedoms properly.
