BlackBerry Rio to be called the BlackBerry Leap?

By now, most folks who keep up on the latest BlackBerry news should be aware of the device known as the BlackBerry Rio and since it first leaked out, we've been wondering whether or not BlackBerry would roll with the Rio name when it was announced or if it would be something like the Z20 as it has also been referred to many times.

As it turns out, BlackBerry appears to have given the device an entirely new name and according to some files found within the BlackBerry 10 OS that name will be the BlackBerry Leap. To go along with the name, there's also some other bits and pieces that show the device is still well under way. As a reminder, the specs for the BlackBerry Leap show it as an evolved BlackBerry Z3:

  • 9.5 mm profile
  • 5" 1280 x 720 display
  • 2MP front facing, 8MP rear facing cameras
  • 2800 mAh non-removable battery
  • MSM 8960 Dual Core 1.5 GHz processor
  • 2 GB RAM, 16GB Flash + Micro SD
  • Penta Band LTE + 4G Hotspot
  • Wi-Fi 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n
  • BT 4.0 / DLNA / Miracast
  • Dual Microphone
  • Speaker phone

The Leap hasn't won much love thus from BlackBerry users and well, if it comes to market as the Leap, I'm not so sure that's going to help it much either but who knows. Sound off in the comments and let us know what you think of the name and of course, keep in mind nothing is final until it's announced, but all signs point to Leap being the name thus far as it was previously recognized in the OS as the Rio.

Thanks, Thurask!
