The BlackBerry Q5 to launch in the Philippines on August 24th

By James Richardson on 21 Aug 2013 05:14 am EDT

Great news for you folk in the Philippines if you have been waiting to pick up the BlackBerry Q5. The lower cost BlackBerry 10 handset is all set to go on sale on August 24th at authorized retailers. According to BlackBerry it is just the black variant that will launch, but I suspect the white and red versions will follow at some point.

BlackBerry do pretty well in the Philippines and I can't see any reason why the Q5 shouldn't help with market share. If this one looks like the BlackBerry for you there is a promotion running on August 24th - 25th through the the Swap, Switch, and Win campaign. The BlackBerry Q5 smartphone will be available at PHP 18,690 less PHP 2,000 and the trade-in value of the swapped mobile phone - looks good to me.

Kristian Salvo, Country Manager for the Philippines at BlackBerry said, “We are excited to bring the new BlackBerry Q5 smartphone to the Philippines. The BlackBerry Q5 smartphone offers a great experience to customerswho want to have the power of BlackBerry 10 with a QWERTY keyboard in a stylish youthful design, making it easy for them to have fun and stay socially connected with those that matter most to them.”

Hands up in the Philippines who's taking advantage of the deal?

The BlackBerry Q5 to launch in the Philippines on August 24th

Good news. Seems like the global roll out of the BlackBerry Q5 has really begun...

The pricing really is horrible. It's so high for their "entry level" phone. Make it $200 USD to start and have carriers price cut it in 3 months. Amazon loves to offer phones for free!

Not really... you can get the xperia Z for 580usd or a S3 for 440usd...
The most craziest thing is... you have to pay about 200+- usd for a Z10 with a 2yr contract... HTC one, S4,... are for free with a 2yr contract..

I paid 260usd for my Z10 with a 2yr contract at T-Mobile... with 4GB (4G), 2000min and 1000sms for 30usd a month

That's a pretty good deal. My friends in Canada constantly complain about high rates and 3 year plans (will change to 2 years in December).

2yr plans are already available even though the law change won't take effect till Dec. Verizon is incoming to Canada it looks like.

I hope one of our carriers price this for P999 / month (roughly $20 - 25). Similar to what they did when Curve 9320 came out. It'll REALLY be a steal.

Great! This will be a good upgrade from BlackBerry Curve Users. It will surely be a hit here in Metro Manila! :D
Nice going BlackBerry!

I was informed the units to be launched are 3G only phones? I was under the impression that all Q5's had Quad comments chipsets with So modems.

In any event, among the two carriers with LTE services only Globe LTE (1800 MHz) is compatible with Z10/Q10 modem. Smart LTE is 2100MHz, Band 1.

Lack of LTE is not all bad news. LTE or HSPA+ data plans costs Php999 for LTE BlackBerry's and other phones. BlackBerry's on HSPA+ plans only cost Php599 a month. So BlackBerry's get a discount on non-LTE data plans as compared to other devices.

Same comment on the price. I saw the Z10 selling for Php19,800. So the Q5 will appeal to those who want a physical keyboard and find the Q10's prices steep.

Can't do the swap switch because of typhoons and inaccessible stores. But oh well..

The Q units are outselling the z10 from what I've heard..i guess people still don't trust a full touch doesn't matter cause I love my Z10!:D

Again an idiotic strategy by Blackberry by launching JUST the Black variant. Why not launch the red white and pink along with the black and go full force. There would be many female customers whom Blackberry targets via Alica Keys would want the pink. Just don't get this stupid product management team. Why follow dude just launch it with full bang and impress the youth of that country!!

I think BlackBerry is ignoring the consumer market and targeting the business segment with these colour and pricing decisions. By the time they roll out the other colours with lower prices, the potential consumer market would have gone to cheaper Android phones already with BBM going cross platform. The current strategy is killing the potential of yet another BB10 device.

I soo agree! I would've stormed my way through if pink would be available.. I'm tired with my black Z10 though it looks timeless and classy, I'd still want a pink Q5 can't wait!

Sorry but this is a bad pricing. There are many cheap Android phones in the PHL. How BlackBerry can compete with them?

Already happy with my z10 and got it free for a 30 month contract. I think the 9720 would do better. To this day, I've only seen 2 other people use a bb10. The rest it's either the curve or bold. Though I've got to say, carrier support for BlackBerry in the Philippines is very strong.

I shared this article with all my beautiful filipina girl friends.

I think it's not wise to buy the q5 for 19000 php coz u can get the amazing Z10 at 21000php!

Posted via CB10

19k for a swap z10. Screwed pricing scheme. If the positioning of the q5 is that of the curve. Lower the price you'll get the masses to embrace the q5.

It's still a wee bit high IMHO.

Posted via CB10

I'm surprised how 'affordable' Z10 is now.. tsk tsk it really isn't wise buying your phone at launch haha! I would've saved 10k if I bought my phone now.. *shrugs* oh well, on the second thought, I'd prolly buy the Q5 few months after.. it would prolly come cheaper even if I avail the switch and swap for my BlackBerry Bold 9700..

Posted via CB10

It will be released on the 24th.. but I've been using my q5 hmm. Near a month. :)
Well this is a good news for me I think.
Cause cases and other accessories will soon be available for BB Q5...
Great! Very helpful. :)
But how much would it be here in Philippines.
I just want to know the price difference. :)

Posted via CB10

Oops. Forgot to read the last part.
The Q5 will be 18,490 hmm..
Quite expensive huh..
Cause I bought mine
Just 10,300 (if converted to peso)
in other country.
Without tax and what so ever.
Well.. Good luck to those who are planning to buy.
BB Q5 is quite great. :)

Posted via CB10

This is great. A lot of Filipinos still use BB. :) I already have the Q10 so I won't be buying but I think the red Q5 looks nice.

Posted via CB10

It's a bit expensive, But filipinos are still into legacy devices, and BlackBerry I think would have a good market for 9720 here.
