BlackBerry PlayBook OtterBox Defender Case Drop Test!!

By Kevin Michaluk on 4 May 2011 12:19 pm EDT

We drop test the BlackBerry PlayBook OtterBox Defender Case!

If you're the type of person who beats the heck out of your gadgets, OtterBox always offers maximum protection while still allowing the device to be accessible for everyday use. And for RIM's first tablet they have released the OtterBox Defender Case for the BlackBerry PlayBook that is definitely rugged and will help keep your PlayBook in pristine condition.

We visited the OtterBox booth at BlackBerry World 2011 and had some quick fun drop testing the Defender Case. As you'll see from the video above, the Defender Case takes the beating while the PlayBook keeps on playing. The case definitely adds some bulk and mass to the PlayBook, but if you plan to use your PlayBook in less than friendly environments this is definitely a case you'll want to check out. It retails for $69.95 but you can get it for less from And don't forget, we have free shipping on orders of $50 or more (within continental US). Follow the link below for more details.

the floor is carpeted. dummy.

Let's see some parking lot, getting out of the truck drop action.

It's pretty thin carpet over concrete. Definitely good for a THUD.  I'm sure we can arrange a followup concrete test. Stay tuned.

Great - I would expect a Playbook that isn't in a case to survive those drops.

I put the Otterbox on my PB last night and I love it. I'm feeling a hundred times more secure with it on. And typing still works just as well!

everytime he drops it my heart skips a beat, I don't even have a PB and it hurts to watch this... But i'm sure the case works just fine...

I was waitng for the box to shatter the whole time I was watching the video. :)

thats not shag carpet people. i doubt the carpet offers much if any extra cushion.

Knowing that it is a large convention center it is most likely concrete directly underneath the carpet.

It may not shag but its carpet with padding non the less so it offers more support than concrete alone. A concrete test like what Squaretrade did with a naked playbook would be suffice to true life situations. Let it fall from your lap on to concrete when you stand-up or getting out of a vehicle and it falls from your lap. Walking with it and it falls from your hands and you tumbling it to catch it....smack on its face test will sell me but i am still loving the Otterbox Defender.....

How awesome it would have been for it to break when Kevin dropped it lol

Newfangled Gizmo

Don't try this at home, kids.

Great product. Now get over to the tether booth and tell those guys to get me a Playbook Tether app!

Love mine :) no fears carrying it around in my hand now instead of packing it away nice and safe in a backpack...the texture of the case also makes it stay nice and put on the seat next to me in the car too... no sliding around like the Convertible case and the Neoprene case... But don't count on me doing a drop test anytime soon...

CrackBerry Canada has it for $CAD 66.95 also with free delivery.

Come on Kevin, don't forget your Native Land eh!

Hey Kevin , did you drop an S-Bomb in the vid when you dropped the playbook. That would most likely be the first word out of my mouth too if I dropped my PB, Otterbox or not. Actually, it would have been an F-Bomb if I didn't have the Otterbox. ;-)

I believe he said 'Shoot'. Nice try though.

Got an commuter-series box for my curve and Otterbox is just the most secure case i can imagine. PB is looking i bit rough now (like these SON*M-products), but good to know that someone's there to help us protecting our lovely devices in a good way.

Wow, way different than that warranty video where they break the PB.

And I heard Kevin say "shit"

First post.

What is the basic design of the case? You can drop it, yes. But if I were to take it to a construction site would it protect it reasonably? It doesn't have to be hermetically sealed or be submersible to 150m. But keeping concrete / drywall dust out, protected by sparks from a grinder and usable whilst spitting rain would be a big plus on a job site.

STOP EET STOP EEETTTT! just mail that to me if you're just gonna drop it! LOL

I just wrapped my BB PlayBook in the Otterbox Defender (just like my BB Bold 9700). This adds some bulk and weight to the PlayBook, but that is a small price to pay for the added protection it affords. The Otterbox does not significantly reduce or obscure access to the screen, however the protective plastic film over the screen does make the screen somewhat less responsive to the touch of both your finger and stylus (if like me you have rather large fingers and find navigating with a stylus to be a more exacting approach to typing and selection). That would be the single negative I have encountered thus far... Then again, a small price to pay for the added protection.

I have been and continue to be a huge fan of Otterbox's Defender Series of BB cases...

I wouldn't even want to drop it on concrete,i want my otter box case to be pretty just like the device in it's kangaroo pouch

I picked me up one of these finally from crackberry. I love otterbox cases for everything except my torch. that's a horrible case. the one for the playbook; however, is awesome. I work in an area that is nothing but steel and concrete, and I'd feel confident that this case would protect my playbook if I dropped it. I highly recommend one.

I have the otterbox case for my PB...and I love it!!!...I also have an otterbox case for my torch...these cases are the best on the market (as far as I'm concerned)...very durable, and easy on the hands with the non slip rubber shell...before having the otterbox case, I found that after a while of holding my PB, my hands would get "slippery"....and it would leave unnecessary fingerprints on the shell...not any more!!!!....
this case is a must have for anyone taking their PB where ever they go....

I wanted the Otterbox Defender to completely protect my Playbook from being taken in and out of the car, having stuff thrown on top and all the sundry mishaps that can befall a Tablet being knocked around on the move. It does all that and seems to totally protect the Playbook from the worst that I can throw at it. My only criticism is thet it signifigantly increases the baulk and weight of the Playbook. So much so that when I travel overeas I will need to invest in someting smaller and less rugged. I suspected this when I bought it so I have no complaints, it defends, exactly as it says on the tin! bought mine from

Tablet 1996

Big Deal,
I accidently pitched playbook really hard down some high stairs recently and it hit a metal door and bounced off it. Not even a scratch!! The playbook should definitely survive those tests without the case
