If that's all the update contains that is quite a disappointment.

Time would be better spent by holding all this stuff until you give native Email and PIM on the device.

Posted by mckillio Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

It would be a disappointment if that's all it includes but I doubt that going from 1.0.6 to 1.0.7 would only include those features, this information seems more like a 1.0.6.5 update. I assume that when they add the native mail etc. that it will be 1.1

Posted by dasDestruktion Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

They can keep the update if this is all they have for us.

Oh boy, I am trying to hold on to the playbook for the full 30 days before i return it. Please RIM give me something juicy before the 25th. I love and hate the playbook at the same time. I can't justify the cost of the playbook in my head given the offerings from other tablets for the same price. So RIM please HURRY! I want to keep it.

Posted by Jimcmf Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Don't be greedy people. I will take it, so long as it's an improvement to what I currently have.

Just make sure that it doesn't mess something else up.

Thank you RIM.
You guys are doing a good job.

Posted by andrew3306 Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 312 days ago

Do you realize the competitive nature of the tablet business? You said not to be greedy, do you understand the importance of making a first good impression especially after starting this late? (I am not upset btw, just having healthy discussion here).

Lessons RIM should learn, I end up loving my bb storm, i loved each update, I saw the improvements, I was patient, but was shocked when I tried an Android last year (thats how long it took me to even try another platform), the os leaks of the bb storm 2 that i was going so crazy about was not even performance competitive. It's like RIM has some hard headed folks in charge who has a hard time forecasting competitive strategy or simply ignores it because their sales were good at that time.

Instead of saying good job you should tell them good luck. I see them making the effort, and do believe they will have super phones. If they blow the chance to satisfy consumers now with making a good impression, consumers will assume those future bb phones phones will also come way short of their expectations.

Trust me, what consumers and critics say are important. A device could have the ability to part the red sea, but with bad press, consumer wont even try that device to find out its awesomeness themselves.

I went in best buy and the 2 playbooks on display was unusable. One was dead, the other was stuck on the setup screen without a connection. Apple and Android were awesome, it's like best buy wants the PB to fail.

Posted by buckken Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 311 days ago

I absolutely agree about BEST BUY. When I went to mine back in June, Blackberry Playbook was the only tablet NOT on display. They took one out of the drawer with a battery that was nearly dead, and it stopped shortly after I turned it on. They were praising the android and iphone the entire time I tried to review the playbook. I left without purchasing. I went to another store and found one that was up enough to review. LOVED it. Love the size of the playbook, the screen is awesome, as are the graphics (someone stop me), and heaven help me, I love playing Front Runner game on it. Super. Only downside I find is on the One NFB Canadian videos, I tried to run Madame Tutli Putli (which is one of the most wonderfully wierdest videos I've seen) ran in spurts, never really working correctly. Many of the others from that HD area did the same.

It's been a trying year for Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; Toronto: RIM) as it struggles to revive its fortunes, but it's not all bad news for the struggling BlackBerry maker. (See RIM Rumblings.)

RIM will remain in the top echelon of smartphone vendors this year, following Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) and High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) (Taiwan: 2498), buoyed by its continued strength in emerging smartphone markets, according to Pyramid Research .

The BlackBerry line is especially popular in Indonesia and Thailand, two markets with big growth potential. "The fact that RIM has not had a new handset model launch in nearly a year will not affect smartphone buyers’ decisions in developing APAC countries to the same extent as with North American consumers," Pyramid analyst Emily Smith writes in a research note.

Okay, not exactly something to brag about, but it's good for RIM that its story extends further than just smartphone-crazed North America.

Posted by Kiddo2050 Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 312 days ago

North Americans should get over themselves. If a company wants growth look to asia not north america.

Also the more updates the better. Those that complain, just don't update otherwise f-off with your useless comments.

Posted by Crashdmmy39 Sunday, Jul 17, 2011 310 days ago

I'm an American (North, ahmmm) and could not agree more! However, RIM please DO NOT forget the faithful!!

Posted by Maiev Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Is it me or the patch note is from the LAST update (June 6th). It sounds like what we got last time (language support)!

Posted by RadHaz75 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

I think it's saying for past updates, see the last update note from June 6th.

Posted by Maiev Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

It says for more details :3 i don't think it means the past update.... notes plus it just doesn't make sense to post past patch notes.... lolz

Posted by dasDestruktion Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Perhaps the June 6th link there only includes information regarding downloading updates etc in general... I doubt it would include additional change log information!

Posted by khushang88 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

At last pictures available in portrait mode!!

Posted by swiedom Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

What a waste of an update. When is a major update coming?

Posted by Maiev Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Dude, for more details, refer to the BlackBerry Software Update on JUNE 6!!! (on the above screenshot), so I don't think that's all to the update.

Contains no new info.

Posted by bquinney Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

I wasn't expecting anything mind-blowing as it's only a 1.0.6.x -> 1.0.7.x release. I'm wanting major updates, but like many, I'm enjoying the hell out of each one that comes. That said, this is the most credible piece of advance "leak" I've seen yet, although Kevin's been on it pretty well too.

June 6.....could be more to it I guess...

Posted by Parum Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Hopefully these aren't the only new features in this update. I wouldn't want to mash the update button every 2 minutes for nothing.....

Cue the parade of the whiners.

Posted by vlade31 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Also cue the parade of the whiners whining about other whiners.

Posted by shootsscores Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 312 days ago

The whiners whining about people not whining are the funniest. It like dealing with a bunch of spoiled brats which is probably spot on considering that early adopters are very often those who want the new toys NOW, NOW, NOW!

Did people learn nothing from Willie Wonka?

Posted by chi-town311 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Broader regional custimization...

Hmmmm, wonder if that can be translated to something like - "ATT forced us to re-write the bridge app to prevent people from using a service they already pay for."

I'm just thinking that this update will probably have something to do with that whole debacle.

Posted by Bla1ze Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Additional languages is what it means.

Posted by chi-town311 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

If it means additional languages then why do they explicitly say "and additional languages" after it. It seems like it could mean something else.

Posted by bbpandy Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Eek I hope not!. I think with the AT&T thing, if they can track it, it would probably be done by a custom vs of bridge that AT&T users DL onto their phone......let's hope so anyway....

Wow is all I can say.

Posted by SMCNI1968 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

@ Parum, you say that you have to keep hitting the update button, don't you get a notification of updates automatically? I do on my playbook.

Posted by Parum Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

I do get notifications, but I feel it may take longer for that to push to me than manually hit update.

Posted by MrDisco Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Well that's a disappointing update. My impression of the PB still stands - i want to chuck it out the window and roll over it repeatedly with steam roller.

Posted by bbpandy Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

If it's so bad, sell it on ebay & move on

Posted by mckillio Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

For $200.

Posted by Darlaten Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Hmm - if this is the update that Kevin went all goo-goo-gaa-gaa for on his post when he attended the AGM, then him and I have radically different notions as to what constitutes a good update :)

Still, I am very leased that RIM has followed through on at least one criticism of the Playbook by its users; namely, the fact that we can now view photos in both portrait and landscape modes! Kudos to that one.

I had hoped that we would have seen .mkv support added - oh well, at least, I know it's on the way ;)

Posted by Bla1ze Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

it's not. Kevin saw further advancements in the OS, not basic updates.

Posted by dswofford Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

FYI Guys, if you delete your Hotmail or Yahoo Mail Icon, you will get the update quicker.;) Hint Hint

Agree with you all... Have been pro Playbook for some months now but without the Android apps (and thereby a good selection of all apps...) and native email I am starting to agree with all the rest around me, that the Playbook is nothing to have...

Posted by Dadymon Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Drip, drip,.drip,..., some people will never be happy! I'm still enjoying the heck out of my PB!

Posted by newcollector Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

It's amazing how some people are so negative BEFORE the upgrade actually hits that it makes one wonder if anything will satisfy the need for more.

Posted by ruiner666 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

I do enjoy my Playbook but I'm starting run out of reasons to recommend it with sad updates like this that don't deliver the things we have all been waiting months for

Posted by jvictor77 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Love my PB as it is....bring on the gravy!!

Posted by laurah2215 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Ugh. I agree. If this is all, majorly disappointing after waiting weeks from the last one. I badly want to be able to customize the icons on the homescreen (ie hide, delete-real delete, not be prompted to reinstall with OS update). I'd also like better bookmark options in Browser. This is BEFORE any apps I'd like. These are basics that BB smartphones have this tablet should have had from the beginning.

Posted by mohawk rcer Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Your whining everybody Hahaha. Sell it

Posted by andrew3306 Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

I must admit I am a whiner who wants RIM to give me a decent pdf reader and video chat across platforms thats all i care about really.

Posted by Beakman Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

About those whiners - Look, I've been using this thing exclusively for personal use from release date. It is starting to get old with the lack of functional refinement. I'll be coming in and going out on another field project in a few weeks and I'm just going to have to go back to a netbook 'till this thing gets sorted out. Sorry.

Posted by Alberta Blue Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

BB OS updates always include more that what is in the change log. Be patient people.

Posted by JonManu Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

What a rip. My PB won't transform into Omega Supreme and start kicking some Decepticon ass with this update either. Shame on you RIM, shame.

I read this, and thought that I would share this with you:

It’s easy to see why RIM will be the dominant Smartphone player in the east.

Apple is an American company; Apple pays taxes to the American government. The government uses that money to purchase weapons and missiles, to use against the people of the east.

Android is software made by Google. Google is an American company; Google pays taxes to the American government. The government uses that money to purchase weapons and missiles, to use against the people of the east.

Nokia and Microsoft together. Microsoft is an American company; Microsoft pays taxes to the American government. The government uses that money to purchase weapons and missiles, to use against the people of the east.

RIM is a Canadian company. Canadians love everyone.

Nokia use to do very well out east. But now that they have joined an American company, it’s an entire new ball game.

Posted by tkcdamar Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Bahahaha; umm, time to get down off the soap box. I'm sure you are used to being laughed at, and never with.

Posted by Jimcmf Friday, Jul 15, 2011 312 days ago

Soap is made in America. Do the people out east smell good?
Many haven't washed in years.

End of story !

I think you need to wash your mouth out mate...

Posted by PsyCorps Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 312 days ago

agreed....he's talking crazy stuff...

Posted by tkcdamar Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 312 days ago

Jim, Please take note that the Canadians were involved in every major military conflict in the "East" that the United States have been involved. Korea, Canadian presence; Vietnam, Canadian presence; Gulf War, Canadian presence; Afghanistan, Canadian presence; Iraq, Canadian presence. I should probably take the time to explain to you as well that the Canadian's were and still are stanch military and political allies with the US. Thus I believe your military connection to smartphone popularity theory to be as naïve as you appear to be. Military conflicts rarely have any bearing to the popularity of goods and services.

Where is my update?

Posted by shootsscores Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 312 days ago

Canada had no official presence in Vietnam and has no official presence in Iraq. Condi Rice actually tried to claim that Canada was in Iraq while getting nailed during a recent interview however. Kind of shows the quality of that particular administration. Ann Coulter tried to claim that Canada was in Vietnam btw.

Posted by tkcdamar Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 311 days ago

1973; The Paris Peace Accords were enforced by Canadian national forces. Canadian military personnel representing the Canadian government, the Canadian people. Albeit in an attempt to bring an end to the war, these forces did actively engage the North in conflict. Thus supporting the American effort in Vietnam.

Iraq War; Approximately one hundred Canadian exchange officers, on exchange to American units, participated in the invasion of Iraq. Again, Canadian military personnel actively supporting US involvement.

I'm on the phone with PlayBook customer service, because my microphone decided to stop working today, and they asked for my software (which is 1.0.6.2390) and the customer service lady told me to hit 'check for updates' to "see if it's ready for my device yet." So I'm waiting like a kid before Christmas!

12:04am (Toronto time)

The media lied and screwed us again.
These rumours by the media is beginning to become tiring.
Can't they start rumours about Apple?

Lets start - "Apple is going to buy Google, and shut it down this coming Wednesday"

Now if it doesn't happen, lets call Apple liers.

Maybe they found an issue, so they couldn't release the update?!

I think people just need to relax and calm down.

Posted by sk8er_tor Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 311 days ago

I don't know why so many people think that software can just be magically written and pushed out the door. Look at Apple - how many features have they added from iPhone 1 - 4? Heck, look how long it took Apple to just add cut and paste. RIM is doing a great job! Sure, I'd love for new things to come quicker but we have to be realistic.

Posted by falconeight Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 311 days ago

It's a maintenance update. It's just to give playbook owners something to do.

Posted by jvictor77 Saturday, Jul 16, 2011 311 days ago

Do you really think they work for a month or so just to keep us quiet - or because they genuinely want to improve their product? Who knows with RIM!

like the other guy commented im trying to stay with rim but im so not happywith the playbook lack of apps is like begin when i look around man is so hard to stay loyal to rim as much as i love the os im in the process on getting a tablet and other platforms just offer much for the money and here is to waiting and hoping game im sick of this crap

Well at least RIM stayed consistent. 07/17/11 14:35pm in SK. Still no update. I don't think BlackBerry users would know what to do if RIM actually released something on time. I know i for one would get light headed if not faint.

Posted by JonManu Sunday, Jul 17, 2011 310 days ago

Lol love the over reaction. This is a rumored update. The PB is still a fine tablet, and it just keeps getting better. Everyday more quality apps come out in App World. It seems that the more Playbook users declare a need, the sooner developers come out with an app. People complained about no Epub reader, and now we have three (I personally love EPub). We needed a comic reader, and got a really good one.

Maybe the solution is to start posting what you would like to see on the PB so that the developers know where the need/want is.

Posted by axllebeer Sunday, Jul 17, 2011 310 days ago

This is true. And good to see it all as well.
