During a demo at SXSW, the BlackBerry PlayBook was finally shown off in detail using portrait mode. We have seen PlayBook in portrait before, but not to this extent. The transition between landscape and portrait looks to be quite fast, and smooth as silk. It's great to see RIM's latest build for PlayBook so polished, especially so close to the device finally launching. Skip to 5:45 on the video to see the PlayBook in action using portrait mode.

I will add my thought....sound was fine here.
I'm not even on my main PC...waiting for a new hard drive.
Operating on a HP Mini 1000 on a wireless connection.

I would like to Know if the playbook will have its own navigation app or do we have to wait till 3rd party will think about maybe making one. I didn't get the ipad2 because I'm still in it for the Playbook.

that video is awesome, rotating the pb looked so smooth. i love the fact that some of the apps are going to work well in portrait mode, AND the app switching mode in portrait looked sick. i cant wait to get my hands on this thing PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RIM ANNOUNCE A DATE PLEASE. i wanna give you my money lol

A very good video. Gave good demonstration of new features, and things we already knew.
It sure looks like it was worth the wait.

I imagine Google Maps will be available shortly after release. This video is pretty slick - glad to see portrait mode working. Now let's get an official release date.

if they stay at 499 that would be great! heard rumors 599 :( since we all waited so long but like my dad told me on our way to disney: it's worth the ride ( i was 10 :)

Ryan Bidan from RIM says in a former video that the playbook will start under 500 US$ :)
I hope that's still the truth.

:) been playing with the tab its ok and will do what i need it to do, but won't marry up to my bb phone. so thats why been waiting. if the price is 599 i would have to think about paying the extra. if they would just announce it then all this wondering would be over. BAD RIM BAD

My eyes just got watery, the anxiety is killing me. Scheduling my vacation next month around this thing, was leaving 4/10 now leaving 4/14. Gotta have this when I'm at the beach or poolside.

The GUI design and interface looks pretty nice, It looks like a lot of detail and time went into the functionality over all

It's a bit odd that when in portrait mode, the minimized running applications are also in portrait. Some apps, like Need For Speed, are then rotated and difficult to view (you can see it in the vid). The same thing does/will occur when minimizing videos.

Why not keep the minimized apps in landscape mode, regardless of the orientation? I realize you may then be able to see less of them, but at least everything will be displayed correctly. The only negative is that when in portrait mode, if opening a minimized app displayed in landscape, the app would have to rotated back to portrait mode.

Guess it's a no-win scenario... I'm buying one, and will likely use it 99% of the time in landscape anyway.

I'm going to assume he was joking, because even a dummy could see that this is going to be the tablet that all others will be measured against.

Oh come on. I'm a BlackBerry user myself, and even I'm not delusional enough to think that this tablet is going to be the standard by which ANYTHING is measured—well, except perhaps for lag time between announcement and release. It may hold the record there.

Long story short: RIM will be lucky if this endeavor doesn't crash and burn in the first 6 months. The only positive to come out of it may be if it can incorporate the interface into its next-gen phones.

lol my friend at RIM is getting OT-ed this weekend to prep for PB launch!
If it wasn't him saying the PB is awesome, I'd hate to say they kinda stretched it for a little long and losing a lot of steam :<

This is soo much cooler than the iPad2... But can they just release it already. ARRGGHH. Getting tired of waiting... Want to buy it and prove to people how much better it is than an iPad.

I'm surrounded by RIM fanboys. Are you even watching the video? There's nothing original about the PlayBook at all. QNX is a rip off of WebOS, just look at the way you multitask and close apps. If you want to enjoy QNX get one of those WebOS tablets and you'll have the same experience. Only special thing about the PlayBook? It has BBM.

Then comes the release date. I mean really, it was announced months ago and it doesn't even have a definite release date. The iPad 2 was announced last week and it's already out. RIM is giving people just enough time to purchase a different tablet while RIM fanboys wait impatiently for the PlayBook.

And my last little complaint is the lack of decent articles on Crackberry. It's either a Playbook video or another poorly made app being updated.

I'm sorry to all of the BlackBerry fans out there, but RIM is paving the road to its own death.

silly troll you scared that it will mop the floor with what ever else tablet you like.

"I'm surrounded by RIM fanboys"
the site is called CRACKBERRY dumb ass

"If you want to enjoy QNX get one of those WebOS tablets and you'll have the same experience."
is there even a webos tablet out yeah retard, think before you write.

"Only special thing about the PlayBook?"
its going to be better than all these other so called tablets which are toys.

"I mean really, it was announced months ago and it doesn't even have a definite release date. The iPad 2 was announced last week and it's already out."

QNX is a new os the ipad is using the same os as all of apples smartphones which was out since 2007, they had to announce very early to get developers and show their stock holders that they are going into the tablet market.

RIM is giving people just enough time to see what the other tablets are and save money to buy a playbook.

"And my last little complaint is the lack of decent articles on Crackberry"
STFU then go to another site then there is engadget and cnet no one is forcing you to read the articles here.

i would rather wait for a well made tablet then to have one with minor upgrades and a leaking screen like that ipad 2and one with apps ready at launch unlike the xoom.

im sorry for trolls like yourself that going around talking shit cause your filled with envy and hate.

"silly troll you scared that it will mop the floor with what ever else tablet you like."

More like it'll be sitting around on the shelves.

"the site is called CRACKBERRY dumb ass"

Obviously the site is called Crackberry. That doesn't mean that everyone here has to bow to RIM.

"is there even a webos tablet out yeah retard, think before you write."

There's one coming soon, and at this rate it'll be out before the PlayBook.

"its going to be better than all these other so called tablets which are toys."

Better than all the other tablets? Someone's biased, and completely wrong. Take a look at other tablets before you make stupid claims.

"QNX is a new os the ipad is using the same os as all of apples smartphones which was out since 2007, they had to announce very early to get developers and show their stock holders that they are going into the tablet market."

The Playbook is clearly done. It's been in videos for months.

"STFU then go to another site then there is engadget and cnet no one is forcing you to read the articles here."

My point about the articles is that there isn't any notable news in the BlackBerry world.

"I'm sorry for trolls like yourself that going around talking shit cause your filled with envy and hate"

Are you fucking 12? Bitch, you don't know me. And you also don't know grammar or spelling. Just because I don't like where RIM is going doesn't mean I'm trolling. Give me reasonable arguments instead of your biased crap.

He gave you reasonable arguments you retard. You're just too iBiased to comprehend them. Don't come to a site called Crackberry, shit all over the most promising device in years, and expect to escape unscathed. You want to shit all over the playbook? Head over to your iEngadget site and do it there. In the meantime STFU.

"its going to be better than all these other so called tablets which are toys."

Yeah. That's not biased at all. Go back to praising your BlackBerry.

funny thing is that your first three arguments makes no sense seeing that you have to way to prove them
no one is bowing to RIM.
none of your arguments make sense because this is a BLACKBERRY SITE!!
of course most of the people here are blackberry bias and they are apple bias at IOS site and also at the android central.

dont get me wrong im not a blinded isheep that cant see when a company is not progressing in the direction i would like it to go but at the same time that does not give you a reason to talk shit about their future devices with out using any of them first.

PS. my spelling?
please do explain

You've made it very clear that this is a BlackBerry site. I promise you that I realize that. I'm just speaking on the basis of what this new tablet offers as compared to other tablets. Of course I expected to be accused of trolling since people get very offended when people talk against their BlackBerries.

RIM is just trying to get into the tablet trend, which I honestly can't see catching on. People don't want to type a business email on an awkward 7 inch touchscreen. Isn't that the whole reason why BlackBerries have keyboards?

Back to the subject of business, the PlayBook is meant to be a "business tablet" and not a toy like every other tablet on the market apparently is. It makes it seem strange how half of these PlayBook videos are about the games it can play and it's media capabilities.

But of course this is a BlackBerry site, so no one will accuse the PlayBook of being a toy.

What redeeming qualities does this PlayBook have? To me it just looks like a WebOS ripoff shoved into an awkwardly sized tablet.

And don't get me wrong, I don't hate RIM. If they through QNX on a smartphone I would gladly consider it, but I'd rather work on an iPad 2 or a XOOM.

"People don't want to type a business email on an awkward 7 inch touchscreen. Isn't that the whole reason why BlackBerries have keyboards?"

It has been shown that you can type with the PB in the same fashion as how one would type using a BB - holding it with one hand or two using your thumbs in either portrait or landscape. You personally may find that 7 inch as awkward but there are many other people who like that form factor because of portability and typing. Personally, I find using a 10 inch tablet awkward - too big/heavy to carry around. I've seen people using it in buses, it looks very awkward to me.

"Back to the subject of business, the PlayBook is meant to be a "business tablet" and not a toy like every other tablet on the market apparently is. It makes it seem strange how half of these PlayBook videos are about the games it can play and it's media capabilities."

I am pretty sure there are RIM people using their business connections and going DIRECTLY to businesses to market the PB. Marketing to consumers has always been a problem for RIM, making videos and posting them on YouTube seems to make sense when you are trying to tap into the consumer market. Don't get me wrong though, I am getting tired of all the videos.

"What redeeming qualities does this PlayBook have? To me it just looks like a WebOS ripoff shoved into an awkwardly sized tablet."

I won't deny that it looks like a WebOS ripoff. However, to me it seems they were able to change some little things and make it work. As long as it works I am fine. You, along with many others might disagree, but there are also many others that just don't care if its a ripoff.

All comes down to personal preference. I like the PB because of the form factor, UI, specs, and the fact that I can tap into my BB and use email and bbm on a bigger screen. To me, thats all it needs to have to call it special, or better than the competition.

You're absolutely right. It's just a personal preference. I just prefer 10" tablets over 7" ones because I like the idea of a bigger screen, but it would still fit in the side of a laptop case.

But anyway, I'm about done here. I hope you enjoy your PlayBook whenever that release may be... ;)

And tbh, I'd much rather use a 7" tablet than a 10" one... I can actually carry that around in my jacket pocket. I couldn't with a 10" one, so therefore I'd need a separate bag, in which case I might as well take my MacBook. I'm sorry, but this fills in the gap perfectly for me. Call me a RIM fanboy, if that is what a RIM fanboy is then I'm one and PROUD. Proud for being a fanboy for getting something that works best for me.

i think according to someone on engadget that term is fanberry

lol that what i think they call us now

Oh I'm not surprised. It's just silly how people will wait for a RIM tablet when it's nothing special.

I think you kinda envy or like the playbook but because of your surroundings such as friends family environment etc you feel the pressure to have to be hip cool by liking 'younger' adolescent toyish tablets ,and you can't bare to like a dinosaur such as blackberry ,what will your friends say if you did? why am I saying this ? Because if you really hated the playbook you wouldn't spare and waste your time and energy to make these comments, you would just move along and couldn't care less about the playbook , it's like having a crush on girl but your environment will think you'll be lame if you do, so you say to everybody that you hate her but everyday you watch her from afar and see what's she doing, if I had really hated the ipad I would never waste my time and energy to write comments on tipb.com I would just stay away go on with my life and that's it .

Finally an excellent analysis of the troll mindset! Thanks for the insight. Also, many trolls are ex-BB people. There is nothing worse than a convert for hating where they came from. They're like ex-addicts who become evangislists for their new lifestyle

Exactly . And sadly this mostly happenes in the US , where coolness and hipness is much more important than personal needs and preference , and where technology has become somewhat political into deciding which one is the best between the main parties of RIM apple android and windows, for me there is no best each one is different and has its own advantages and flaws and is catered into different needs, personally I use my blackberry as my comunicating device , I use my idevices as my toys , I never used android so I can't judge but I'll never badmouth them , it's about choice and needs which need to be respected .

The iFad is all about coolness and hipness. There is very little content in it. Just like those "cool" types who go into starbucks and order a "Tall" (read small) yada, yada. Their coffee sucks but people will pay $3-4 bucks because they like standing in line and getting a chance to spout their stupid order in Klingon.

...... I love you! No seriously I'd share a good cup of non-starshmucks coffee any day with you. Be it Green Mountain, Newmans own, Dunkin donuts, Mc donalds (as long as the Mc donalds isn't in NJ dont ask), or any of your choosing.

no its not saying that because you think the playbook is over hype makes you a troll but its the fact that you say its not going to be special with out using one personally make its seems like your a troll and your just here to hate on the device.

I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear. Let me clarify.

First off, I'm actually a BlackBerry user, which is the reason I come here instead of tipb or Android Central. I don't own an iPhone or Android phone so why would I go there?

My complaints about the PlayBook are the overhyping, the awkwardly sized screen (in my opinion), how the QNX works just like WebOS and the release date.

The cameras and such are nice, but in the tablet Market cameras can only go so far.

And it's not a matter of pressure or being "hip", it's just that I see nothing in the PlayBook that is superior over the iPad. So why would I spend all of my money on it when there isn't even a set release date?

In my eyes the PlayBook is just as much of a "toy" than any other tablet on the market.

This thing is special simply because its something RIM has never done before. While the UI has been ripped off by Palm its still pretty fantastic. iProducts in my opinion are very stubborn. I absolutely hate their idiotic syncing methods. And other things you simply cannot do with them. The specs on the PB are Comparable if not Better than the iPad 2 (other than the screen size, which I prefer 7"). So you cant say that there isn't anything special about the PB or you would also be saying there is nothing special about tablets (which is a much more valid argument)...

Lets have the truth. If the PB came in 10" which would you buy. iPad2 or PB?

There is no arguing that right now tablets are a luxury and frivolous item. While the PB is probably going to be comparable Media device to other Tablets, I'm pretty sure it'll be very business oriented as well. More so than other tablets "BlackBerry Balance"

Dear RIM

Just learn from apple so you can have your devices released,we've been hearing reading blablabla about playbook for like what...forever?

Thanks,

Ah, yet another video of the VaporBook. I fear this is becoming a little like Storm 1: massive hype, growing anticipation, ages of waiting for a release date, and when it finally came out? hmmmm...

I feel sorry for people like you. The Playbook will sell tens of millions of units and people like yourself will still wonder why.

Fanboy alert. I'll bet that it's going to be sitting around the shelves just like the XOOM that Android fans insisted would be selling insanely.

You're not predicting anything... just talking out your ass.
If you said anything intelligent, you wouldn't be labeled a troll.

RIM fans get so up tight about anything that goes against your precious BlackBerries.

Leave Crackberry for a few seconds and look at some "What tablet are you going to buy?" polls on non-biased sites. PlayBook is on bottom.

Next time you should try using facts in an argument.

What do you gain by doing this ? You are strange , it's like going to a korn concert wearing a pink britney spears t - shirt , once again I ask you what do gain by this ?

I am a BB crackberry man so heres a little song for you trolls:
we love our crackberry oh yes we do,
we love our crackberry what can we do
when were not on here were blue
oh crackberry we love you:)
enough said! all trolls go back to the bridge u came from! I NEVER NEVER GO ON APPLE SITE WHY? I DON'T CARE.

Uhhhhh sure? But I don't get why they come over to here seriously stay on your own site, I've wondered over to tipb a few times to see what apples Iclone is about. I haven't seen any BB trolls over there and i don't post on your site, please for the love of everything holy go home. BTW I've seen you ipad2 im unimpressed i was slightly impressed with the ipad1 but you're new one looks and feels like a clone.

am i the only one nervous about the lag in this video and the tracy & matt one below? let's just hope the playbook isnt to the ipad what the storm was to the iphone!

BB for life
