BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 display pops up in the UK
Some stores in the UK are already sporting new BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 OS displays in hopes of drawing in some new customers. The image here shows a storefront sporting a 4-PlayBook display that says "New BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 Operating System update." While the display doesn't have an official date for the release, the new OS should be arriving on schedule later this month. The 2.0 OS will bring the much anticipated native apps like email, calendar and contacts as well as other new features to the BlackBerry PlayBook when it is officially released. Look for more promos like this in the near future as we get closer to launch day.

exciting!
jonangel Feb 6, 2012 at 4:59 pm
Launch announcement could be as early as tomorrow as Dev Con Europe kicks off and Thorsten is scheduled to speak at 9.20am GMT....or it will be at Mobile World congress
Nascar Dog Feb 6, 2012 at 2:24 pm
Cool!
lang007 Feb 6, 2012 at 2:25 pm
Can't wait until it is here in the US on my PB
Deathcommand Feb 6, 2012 at 2:28 pm
Wait a second. .
The OS on the PlayBooks are 1.x..
asianguy80 Feb 6, 2012 at 2:29 pm
Yes they are but this is just referring to the upcoming official update.
Kandoo-BB Feb 6, 2012 at 5:53 pm
Yes they are but the 5th playbook down in the right hand corner shows 2.0 UI.
BBPandy Feb 6, 2012 at 2:28 pm
Now if only it would "Pop up" on my PlayBook....:)
Every day I get up, one of the first things I do is check for updates
asianguy80 Feb 6, 2012 at 2:28 pm
Stop teasing us and just release the darn thing! lol I kept the Feb 17th date in the back of my mind and forgot about it and now I see this.
bbmtna Feb 6, 2012 at 3:48 pm
+1!!!
bb.pl Feb 6, 2012 at 2:28 pm
Coming soon....Ha...???
Isn't the developers beta featured here been out for a while.
LoganSix Feb 6, 2012 at 2:43 pm
Yes, but it doesn't have all of the features. Just enough to develop by.
Siiid Feb 6, 2012 at 2:33 pm
I hope we get surprised early.
renownedanonymous Feb 6, 2012 at 2:55 pm
Yes.. but WHEN?! Hopefully they'll also give us some numbers of Playbooks sold too. Maybe devcon?
martinjdub Feb 6, 2012 at 2:57 pm
I wonder if this means that the UK gets the 2.0 OS love before the rest of us?
chrism_scotland Feb 6, 2012 at 3:02 pm
Would be interested to know what UK store its been seen in?
Marketing of the PB over here has so far been awful.
scalemaster34 Feb 6, 2012 at 5:08 pm
1) Marketing for most all RIM product has been awful...
2) Would not expect too many stores to setup dedicated displays... unless RIM entices them too. After all, this isn't going to be something that the retails are going to be able to sale or make a profit on. Unless it suddenly changes consumers impressions of the PlayBook and they start buying them - at other than "fire" sale prices.
barkomatic Feb 6, 2012 at 3:04 pm
This is the best indication yet that RIM will deliver as promised.
ps4rh Feb 6, 2012 at 3:12 pm
As promised? So sixty or ninety or whatever days, right?
I mean, yes, I'm glad to see this, too, but the "as promised" watermark was passed some time ago.
Bolderholder Feb 6, 2012 at 3:16 pm
There's 4 playbooks in my family so I'm thinking of throwing a Playbook OS 2.0 Upgrade party! Lol!
I'll just use the leftover chips and dips from Super Bowl weekend. :o)
BYOWiFi!
csantoss Feb 6, 2012 at 3:18 pm
Hey Adam...
Just read the title and almost had a heart attack thinking OS 2.0 was now available for download!!! :-)
We need to come up with a title which references OS 2.0 but doesn't over excite us all.
Maybe something like: "No 2.0 update yet, but here are some other PB related news: ..." ;-)
This is probably the most anticipated OS update for RIM since they launched the company... at least it feels that way to me...
Also, has everything else slowed down in anticipation of this, or is it just me? No BETA apps, no other relevant news, nothing coming out of RIM these days (which might also have to do with a new CEO in the house)...
Calm before the storm maybe?
Abrante Feb 6, 2012 at 3:28 pm
looks like an Apple Logo below the 2.0 (above the PlayBook on the top right).
No biggie, I am just observing the surroundings :)
Thunderbuck Feb 6, 2012 at 3:35 pm
I suspect that's actually a sticker on the window glass to say they're an Apple authorized dealer... no bearing on the PB display.
Jaralle Feb 6, 2012 at 5:28 pm
It is a reflection of the apple logo on the display stand behind the person taking the picture; it is reversed.
bazgibb Feb 6, 2012 at 3:39 pm
I read the crackberry forums all the time and have never felt the need to register to post a comment but have down now because it is obvious that the photo is a fake :(
Firstly, look at the "what? software update coming soon to your Playbook..." sentence. Seems to me that the "what?" part of it is simply as a placeholder because the marketing bods haven't worked out what to put in there yet.
Secondly, every piece of writing on there apart from the "SOFTWARE" title has been added on in Photoshop. See how the reflection in the window isn't visible over the writing but on the "SOFTWARE" it is?
I reckon what this actually is is someone at a store taking a photo of an empty display so that they can see what a final display WOULD look like.
Jaralle Feb 6, 2012 at 5:33 pm
You're just looking for something negative to say. The reflections are correct.
If this was Photoshopped then if the person who did it was clever enough to make sure the reflection of the person taking the photo was reflected on all of the text, would certainly have been able to get the reflection correct on the "Software". The reflection is different on the "Software" because the display stand behind the photographer is off-centre, so it is simply not reflecting on all of the text the same.
bazgibb Feb 7, 2012 at 5:05 am
It's better to look for something negative to say then be pleasantly surprised, rather than be positive and be let down and while the reflections are touch and go, I notice no-one has touched upon the sentence "What? software coming soon to your Playbook." How can that be explained away?
Kandoo-BB Feb 6, 2012 at 5:49 pm
I read this same post over at n4bb...did you just copy and paste it? ,,,,carry on.
gregorylkelly Feb 6, 2012 at 11:28 pm
You are so wrong, sorry buddy.
If you look at "New" and "Oper" in operating you will see the reflection. The lighter reflections are stronger than the darker onces, hense why the reflection over "Soft" in software is very noticable.
bazgibb Feb 6, 2012 at 3:41 pm
In fact on my screen there are also artifacts around all of the writing (including the Blackberry logo) which is another sign that it isn't a real image.
businessguy Feb 6, 2012 at 3:48 pm
Yes, there right, big time fake
BerryClever Feb 6, 2012 at 3:50 pm
They're right, there are artifacts around the writing, and the lighting is off. Plus the logo is just a bit too high and goes just over the black frame. But there are 3 dates that people seem to hope for. Tomorrow (unlikely), or 17th, or the 21st. The 17th has the most bets, and that is next week!
bigdog364 Feb 6, 2012 at 3:51 pm
The anticipation...the wait...
npunk42 Feb 6, 2012 at 3:54 pm
On schedule! Woohoo!
CGSCOT Feb 6, 2012 at 4:23 pm
by looking at the service desk / furnature at back right it looks like a carphone warehouse store. will check my local one to see if they have any info.
Kspraydad Feb 6, 2012 at 6:10 pm
Yep...my guess too...the 'square' in the reflection leads me to Union Square Aberdeen where there is an Apple store and the mall's website photo of carphonewarehouse seems the same as this set up.
CGSCOT Feb 7, 2012 at 1:57 am
Thats a good guess however i was in the Union Square store on Sunday & that display wasnt there. There is an apple store in the mall but its on same side & further along from the carphone warehouse store so logo wouldnt reflect off the window.
All cpw stores are fitted out with same furnature so they all look the same so could be anywhere, good guess though.
bazgibb Feb 7, 2012 at 6:10 am
That photo is taken opposite a shop called SQUARE (you can see it's name in the reflection). Square is an Apple reseller, and the website is here...
http://www.squaregroup.co.uk
The only store which appears to be in a shopping centre is at Eden Shopping Centre in High Wycombe, and when you look on the shopping centre map, there is a Carphone Warehouse Store practically opposite.
Feel free to give them a ring to see what they say - I'm not lol.
narci Feb 6, 2012 at 4:23 pm
It looks fake because it was taken with a 9900. You know, sans autofocus :P
I jest.
iririr Feb 6, 2012 at 5:00 pm
Come on RIM...stop playing games and tell us when the damn 2.0 is coming out already.... It makes me nervous that they haven't officially announced it....to keep the option to postpone the release again!!
BerryClever Feb 6, 2012 at 5:35 pm
I want a release date too, but I think they are keeping the option to postpone it within Feb. They have officially announced the month, which is a start. They know that if they said it will be out Feb. 8, and it delays to even Feb. 9 because of a problem on their side pushing the OS through, it will look horrible (mainly because of the old broken promises). I am expecting it to just happen, or maybe if they were to announce a date, it won't be a long before it is released.
MTDave Feb 6, 2012 at 6:36 pm
I am completely out of "anticipation" for the OS 2 release. If I don't anticipate, I can't be disappointed anymore.
Fool me once, et cetera.

Does anyone have any ideas on the total numbers playbooks sold since the sales began in late november?
using rims last quarter inventory right down of 470 million (associated to the playbook) divided by 270 (average cost to produce) totals approx 1.7 million units of unsold inventory. but from what im seeing and hearing (and hoping) is that the number of units sold since then must be much bigger.
i bought the last 4 in stock the first day they went on sale in late november and every retailer around me was sold out in 3 days. its been 2 months since that and the clammering to get one hasnt stopped.
i'm thinking the sales for this quarter are going to surprise big to the upside maybe 2.5 to 3.5 million.
anyone have any insight?
the ultimate kicker would be outselling the kindle fire which has about 6 million sold.
BoldWorld Feb 7, 2012 at 2:07 am
dont forget a big chunk of that 1.7 mil was stolen on the truck back last year
FryBerry Feb 6, 2012 at 8:46 pm
I am betting it will be closer to the end of the month, after some of the apps that devs are submitting for free PBs are ready to go. My guess would be sometime after the 20th, hopefully along with a thousand new apps for it.
glassofpinot Feb 6, 2012 at 10:04 pm
Pinch me. I'm not dreaming!
Jackson15 Feb 7, 2012 at 8:11 am
My guess is that this was taken downstairs at Selfridges in London. They have quite large BlackBerry displays there and opposite the escalator (which you can see going up in the reflection) is the Apple reseller...
jay4rm619 Feb 9, 2012 at 2:20 pm
i see an apple brand on the reflection.. hahahahahahha.. and yes i do know square is linked with them..

We have been waiting to hear an official date for OS 2.0 a really long time from BlackBerry or a RIM employee. Ever since the first whispers of a date were published, it's all been speculation. Today though we got some official RIM confirmation. At the Developing Native Games with the BlackBerry NDK 2.0 Webcast today, Angel Aldana, RIM Manager (Latin America Alliances), confirmed the official date of PlayBook's OS 2.0 launch to be... Tuesday, February 21st! Barring any setbacks, we will have a shiny new OS on our PlayBooks in about 5 days! This is awesome.
