Looks like RIM is aware that the popularity of the iphone is derived from the app store and are trying to jump start the appworld. Good call!

This is a sham. If they were *really* concerned about developers making the hottest thing for their platform, they wouldn't offer just $50k for top prize and $10k for second. That's a total of $60k. Really? Google dished out $300k to the top 10, with the next 10 getting $125k each, and the next 30 (for the top 50) getting $25k. That's a total of $5M given away (not an investment). While I think Google was too generous, it's clear that their priorities lay with getting devs on-board to create applications for their platform. This fund is *not* concerned with expanding RIM's reach and making the dominate smartphone a Blackberry, but rather with just making money (which is fine, just don't label it as what it's not).

We have been very clear that this is the BlackBerry Partners Fund's contest and it is about finding great apps on the BlackBerry platform that can be future investment prospects for the Fund. This has nothing to do with RIM. We are putting up our own money to find great opportunities to invest in. Last year we gave away "investments" this year, we have put together a cash and value package (more details to be announced on June 1st) that is an outright (no strings attached) prize. The winner gets to pitch the Fund for a potential investment. Read the description of the challenge - it is very clear.
