As part of their Q2 Fiscal 2016 results, BlackBerry also took the time today make their plans to launch the Priv by BlackBerry, which will run Android with BlackBerry security, official. Although the information lacks specifics surrounding the actual launch of the device, the confirmation of its existence was needed given all the leaks recently.
Today, I am confirming our plans to launch Priv, an Android device named after BlackBerry's heritage and core mission of protecting our customers' privacy. Priv combines the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform."
Announced part of their hardware roadmap, the company was sure to mention that while they may be releasing an Android device, BlackBerry 10 will continue as well.
Today, BlackBerry is announcing two new additions to its handheld device roadmap. First, the company will launch a flagship slider device, Priv, which will run on the Android operating system, bringing together the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform. In combination with BlackBerry's efforts to support Android for Work on the BES12 platform, the new device will offer best in class security for enterprise customers. BlackBerry expects the device to be available late in the calendar year in major markets in-store and online, and will release further details in the coming weeks.
While the new device will provide a choice in OS to new and existing customers, the company remains committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which enables industry-leading security and productivity benefits. Second, the company will continue to develop and enhance the BlackBerry 10 operating system and is confirming plans to release platform updates focused on security and privacy enhancements, with version 10.3.3 scheduled to be available in March 2016.
Needless to say, there's still plenty to learn about the BlackBerry Priv and we've still got plenty of time before it all gets laid out but at least now we know when to expect it.

Love the reference, but based on what Chen said, it will come in Android and OS10 flavors. Yay!
Agree. Like my favorite feature about BlackBerry is the fact you can literally deny app permissions (yet still use the app)
Posted via the CrackBerry App for Android
People use the word literally way too liberally.
Posted via CB10
That's literally true
Posted via CB10
Android does the same thing brother. My Nexus I deny permission to apps and still use them.
Posted via the CrackBerry App for Android
well, in my opinion they will be 2 versions of the "Priv" ( damn what a stupid name ), a big one 5,4" cuz android fan boys just like big phones, and a smaller whit BBOS and a cooler name
And what led you to that conclusion?
Posted via CB10
While the new device will provide a choice in OS. To me this sounds like you can get either Droid or 10.3?? If this wasn't the case there would be no choice.
Posted via BlackBerry Z30
No, it's poorly written and that's not what Chen meant. It means they're offering a choice of OS to their clients, either Android (with the slider) or BB10 (with other existing handsets).
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
I think you're right... unfortunately.
I would have liked BB10 on that thing.
Quick! Someone figure out how to delete that crappy droid and replace it with BB10
Posted via CB10
If, when it is available with BB10, I'm all over that thing. Make it so.....
Posted via CB10
"While the new device will provide a choice in OS ..."
I don't think it was poorly chosen words. Pretty clear in what he meant.
'While the NEW DEVICE (ie Priv) will provide a choice in OS to new and existing customers'....if he did not mean that you could choose between Android & OS 10 on that particular device, what on earth did he mean??
Chen has a trouble with clarity.
Chen said on the call that there won't be any new BB10 hardware releases in 2015.
No, Android on slider, BB10 on existing devices.
Posted via CB10
That's clearly what he meant to say, it is just not what came out of his mouth...it would be really nice if BB made a little bit of an effort to send clear signal to its customers.
Priv = private = privacy and Blackberrys great at it.

Privacy and Android don't go in the same phrase. BlackBerry might be able to implement security but privacy will be a challenge. Let's wait and see.
Posted via CB10
Because people Say they want privacy but we all know they want to be cool and sell their life and soul to Google services to get all the apps their friends have.
Posted via CB10
Priv is a brilliant name and will grow on consumers. "Prive" means Private in French. The name will resonate with users as it will grant the PRIVilege to best in class PRIVacy and Security!
Still ugly and you can't deny that. The Venice is superior but oh well
Posted via the CrackBerry App for Android
It also means Private in Dutch but I still hate the name (and I hate that it isn't running BB10).
i agree. it should've been part of the Torch family, actually the re-birth of the Torch
NO it's NOT a Torch. A torch has a Blackberry OS.
Blackberry stock nose diving..........
It actually recovered in the pre trading market.
@Kemausar Meryamun....it's BlackBerry buying up an additional 6 million shares, well not all of them, just enough to make a difference, lol
The name is not so important. What is important is "the new device will provide a choice in OS to new and existing customers" - choice is only when we're also able to run BlackBerry 10 on it. If they would release a Android Passport, too even better... but I won't waste again money on a Android device. I bought 2 times a Android device in my life... I won't waste my money a third time.
I'm tired of people saying the name doesn't matter. It does. A lot. Why do companies do focus groups and place a ton of resources into naming a product. Because the name is what sells the product.
I've said in another article that I joked around about the name yesterday with my parents and sister who were planning on waiting for this to upgrade to, but they will not if the name Priv remained.
It is embarrassing and difficult to say/pronounce. They are all now out. Mom and sister will go back to iPhone and dad will likely get a S6 Active instead. Thanks for the dumbass name. Can't believe this is reality.
Posted via CB10
Well if the "bad naming" of the device is all it took for your family to choose to go with Android and Apple, they didn't care much for the device either way. (Priv) that is.
Posted w/an awesome Z10.
Wrong - this name is embarrassing. People won't spend money on things that make them feel embarrassed.
Posted via CB10
You mean like iPad? I don't think people goes like "look mom, I have an iPhone 6" or "hey dad I got me an Galaxy S6". Who cares?!
Posted via CB10
I think it's pretty bad that in an entire dictionary, they couldn't find one single word that represents their new product. And instead made a word up.
At least iPad is an Apple digital pad. It's an actual complete mini phrase in itself.
Priv makes it sound like someone started talking and forgot the rest of the world. It's awkward and uncomfortable to say and hear. Is someone going to stop you and say: Hey is that the BlackBerry PRiiiiiiV? I don't think so
Posted to CB via my Passport | Lloyd Summers | FileArchiveHaven
And to that end, people ask me all the time:
Hey is that a passport? Is than an S6? Are you still using the 5-ess?
No one is ever going to say: Is that a Priv? A what? A Priv! Are you finishing your word?
People are going to forever ignore the word Priv and call it 'That BlackBerry slider'. It will become a product that is nameless.
Posted to CB via my Passport | Lloyd Summers | FileArchiveHaven
You nail it...regardless what you call it, it will be known as the BlackBerry Slider
Posted via CB10
That actually makes it kind of powerful. It shall be known as....
"The One That Shall Not Be Named"
And the all-seeing eye of Android (read as, back doors wide open for the NSA, FBI, CIA, IRS, NRA, IRA, OICWHATYOUDIDTHERE, Etc) will be scouring the land of Personal Data in search of the Ring of Power until he is able to take form in all his glory once again.

Remember the iPad tampon jokes? It's easy to make fun of names.
Posted via the CrackBerry App for Android
Yeah that is a valid point. I recall a lot of people comparing the name 'ipad' to ... well ... pads... and then it became normal and ok to talk about buying an IPad. And then there was the "Wii", also a very weird name, easily rhymed with 'Pee' and other juvenalia, which became accepted an normal.
Your argument falls apart when one looks at "iPhone" and "iPad."
It's anyway only the Android version of this Device, so the name really doesn't matter.
The name is as bad as the Android OS.
I used blackberry for years but switched to android 3 or 4 years ago. I've been waiting for a device like this. I'd be looking at this rig no matter what the name is. Seriously, if the name of a product is that important, where does functionality fall in importance? just wondering
Just wasted my time with an ios device. Can't do nothing in terms of productivity. But I had xcode ghost apps.

They said they are announcing two devices. Is it just me or did I miss the part about the second device? They named the Priv then named 10.3.3. What's the other device?
BlackBerry Passport Bound
They are launching two different Blackberry Priv's. One running Android and a second one that will run Blackberry 10.
If that is the case, with the amount of attention/knowledge in-store reps already give/have of BlackBerry devices, imagine the confusion that is going to take place. You just might walk in a store hoping to buy the device with BB10, and walk out with the Android device. Because as usual, they haven't a clue about anything pertaining to BlackBerry specifics.
Posted via CB10
They did not say that. They said they will be launching the Android device and continue to support BB10.
Where in there do you get that the Priv will be a BB10 option?
Posted via CB10
No, they only said "two new additions to their roadmap".
Addition #1: Priv.
Addition #2: BB10.3.3.
There will likely be a new phone paired with 10.3.3 at some point in time and I would imagine that phone being the flagship Priv but it is still way to early to know for certain.
Doubt it, since the article said "security and privacy enhancements" and "March 2016".
Posted via CB10
I thought that too but then looked at the announcement again. It states, "..two new additions to its HANDHELD DEVICE roadmap." (I used capitalization for emphasis.) I guess it could still be 10.3.3 in a roundabout way but that is a little misleading.
You're not the only one... I noticed that too and have been wondering the same thing... I really hope that there is a BB10 version of that device
Posted via CB10
And then Private OS just had an end of important end of life existence just like that! Lol.
Posted via CB10
Thank goodness for a real Blackberry with hard keyboard and real Android (not the work around that does not run all Google Play Services).
I don't care much for the 'name', but, so be it.
Let it be the big hardware hit that BB needs to restore public appeal.
It's not a REAL Blackberry it's a Droid.
In this case a Blackberry Droid and a real one at that. BB OS is dying. At least this will get there name out there again.
Posted via the CrackBerry App for Android
i love name
So it says a choice in OS? Does that mean you can pick android or bb10? Or am I up too early and don't quite comprehend what he is saying?
Posted via CB10
Terrible wording, that's all. You get Android.
Is it terrible wording or poor reading comprehension by people who want to read more into it?
Posted via CB10
50/50 for sure.
I also thought it was kinda ambiguous...
Alright, Android's cool and all but really, how hard can it be to put BB10 on it as well? Great specs on hardware. I want one. But, I want a BlackBerry.
Posted via CB10
As I wrote in another post I am sure this phone began as a BB10 device and then was only changed to Android sometime after the Google/BlackBerry partnership was struck recently.
I am going with my second home run this game and will say, once again, that BB10 can be loaded onto this device.
Well customers for sure wont be able to mod that. Not like you can brick the Android slider and load BB10 on it with it being linux gr security kernel and all.
I was hoping this phone would have a dual boot feature...it's the dreamer in me.
As some one once said, what you want and what you get are two different things. You want the company on that is on life support to make a phone with multiple personalities.
Please, come into the real world.
Posted via CB10
That's what I thought.
Posted via CB10
By officially announcing the priv in Android version... we will not seen a BB10 version or really later with 10.3.3 so not before March but in this case it will be really confusing for the different targets (november/december US and north America), January/February Europe, and rest of the world from April/May.
I love my Classic !
Just BBRY trying to put a positive spin on things again to not upset people.
So what happens now to bb10 android runtime?
Posted via the CrackBerry App for Android
That's a good question.
I don't think it'll be removed. It is already fairly old and compatibility is only going to get worse as more Android devs target the newer versions of Android and require more and more of Google Play Services. It's just being left to wither on the vine. This means BB10 will die as well, since native development isn't suddenly going to pick up, now that BB has decided to no longer support native development.
Choice in OS as in you can buy the android slider or get the already released BB10 devices.
Posted via CB10
Yes, exactly.

It means it's the new option (Android) old and new customers have

Same. I'm struggling very much to consider purchasing this. Was all in before "Priv". That name alone lost 3 sales in my family and possibly 4 if I can't cope with it.
The name of a product is what sells it. This is why every company puours their resources into the name of a product. It IS important.
Completely in shock that this is real and confirmed. Very disappointed. Would have been awesome if my entire family had the same BlackBerry.

"BlackBerry is announcing two new additions to its handheld device roadmap."
Sneaky jerks! Where's the info on the second "addition" to the device roadmap? Earnings call audience members, we're counting on you...
Posted via CB10
Oh, nice catch! So does that mean a BB10 Slider running same hardware or something completely different? :)
Lol I said nothing about a second slider, but I'm just saying... ;)
Posted via CB10
No, I realize that, just speculating myself. :) Here's hoping someone brings it up in the earnings call specifically asking about it (and whether it will be an Android or BB10 device).
It's right there, you know after he says "Second, "
Posted via CB10
Eh, I'd consider that more of a status update for software, though you could argue that it's related to get handset device dept... Again, sneaky jerks.
Posted via CB10
I thought so to, and then I reread and saw handset road map, so I guess software counts considering older road maps.
Posted via CB10
The wording isn't the best in the release. Very ambiguous, imho.
Almost more excited about the second device

There is no second device, it's the software update for 10.3.3. Even updates are part of the roadmap.

No, they only said "two new additions to their roadmap".
Addition #1: Priv.
Addition #2: BB10.3.3.
Wording is ambiguous almost to the point of obscurity. I think the second point relates to BB10.3.3.
When I read the announcement, my first thought was that the new device would come with an OS option, but I think I'm wrong. It's just Android. They might offer a BB10 option for this device in March 2016, but if they don't then it looks as though BB10 will go the way of the PlayBook.

Well, it's become quite apparent to me that BlackBerry 10 is dead. John Chen has killed it's development and device line. OS 10.3.3 is only a bug-fix release.
I'm selling my remaining BBRY stock. At a loss. Cancelling my BlackBerry services. And will begin looking for a new technology partner.
Without BlackBerry10, BlackBerry is dead to me. And I guess I won't be on these CrackBerry forums anymore either.
Ditto
10.3.3 officially spoken about!! The idea of a BB10 slider is appealing :) :)
The one thing I didn't quite understand is that the android device is called 'Priv' to represent the company safeguarding their users privacy. Having Google play services connected, I don't see there being anything in the way of "privacy" going on.
Q10 - 10.3.2.2639/SR .2474 < α∂∂ι¢т >
This Chen's sense of humour. He loaghs in the face of all those CrackBerry fanboys who want android and hate the name Priv!
He releases an android running device to guard user privacy and then he goes on to say that Bb10 running phones are the most secure and private.
I'm buying one I can't wait

Cool phone with a crappy name.
Posted via Q10
That's pretty much the best, most efficient way to sum it up.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
Which makes the phone uncool. That's the problem. BlackBerry could have had a huge boost in revs on this high end slider, but that name alone lost 4 sales in my house and I will be unloading a bunch of BB10s now in the "sell" section (look for my thread next week, have a few mint/never used devices).

Posted via my magical Passport, keeping the dream alive Scotland Aye!
Name sounds dumb but that matter very little. I'm excited to see this device in person. Not interested in giving up my Passport but this may be good for other family members
Posted via CB10
Sounds to me like if the "priv" catches on, they will abandon BB10 slowly.. following the path of the Playbook. I just hope there will be an Android version to "upgrade" my Z10 if they pull the plug out of BB10. But I woudn't be surprised if the "priv" would be insanely expensive given the hardware. And that it wouldn't run the latest version of Android. We'll see.
The abandonment of BB10 is a foregone conclusion. If the Priv doesn't catch on, they'll simply just offer their BlackBerry Experience Suite to run on other vendors' hardware and scrap their own hardware. I don't expect 10.3.3 to be anything other than basic security updates.
Wait so you have the option of BB10 or Android with the PRIV?
BlackBerry Z30 Chenpion
No,you have the option of getting the android slider or simply buying any existing BB10 device.
Posted via CB10
As B1aze mentioned above...Terrible wording. Slider will be jus Android. If you want OS10 you can, on another HW.
Screw the name, I want details lol the name don't make the phone. Just saying
Posted via CB10
Amen! I agree. Everyone is getting all flustered over the name. So long as the hardware and user experience are good. People will call it the BlackBerry Android anyway. Maybe that should have been the official name, lol.
Posted via CB10
Far from true. The name is extremely important in selling any product. That name is horrific.
I *might* pick one up if it really stands out, but both my parents and sister said they would not buy the device with the name Priv. This was yesterday when I told them it was just a rumor and I doubt BlackBerry is that out of touch. They are the general consumer, not me... I'm a fanboy and half of us would rather be on BB10.
Hope they have enough enterprises giving it (the Priv) to their employees. Can't even write the name without laughing at its ridiculousness.
Posted via CB10
Okay, names matter yes, but dude, you have to chill out a bit. They don't affect sales nearly as much as the actual brand of the product and the quality of the product do. Do you think Toyota's sales have been damaged by the stupid name Prius? Nope! It's a phone. Nobody except phone nerds talks about the specific names of their phones. "What do you have?" "An HTC." "A Blackberry." etc, etc. When I got my Z10 and then followed it up with a Q10, both equally random names by the way, people didn't ask me about the specific model name - they asked me how I liked the new Blackberry.
Let me be blunt - if your family really all just opted out based solely on the name of the device, they are incredibly shallow people. What horrible lives they must live if something so petty can influence them so greatly. Yish...
Statistically Primus name DID affect sales. It wasn't until reviews of the car an more reviews actually helped the sales. That an heavy marketing on the iPhone with Apple in t USA.
A name is significan enough to affect sale or usage. May I challenge you with Bing by Microsoft? Yeah I'd like to see you argue that one. Not even bad press helped that.
All in all I think having an Android phone will help sales but fo God's sake someone at BlackBerry please smack Chen for carrying an being completely unprepared to properly talk about the phone strengths on BNN!! An assistant should've done that for him.
Posted via CB10
The name is quite terrible. You're telling you couldn't think of anything else? They should've just subscribed to the name that slider thread.
Posted via CB10
I'm not interested in Android. I will wait until we're able to flash a decent system like BlackBerry 10 onto it or until it gets officially announced and released running BlackBerry 10. :-)

Excellent... No instant migration to an overpopulated OS industry... We can have our BB10 and Android too if we desire without having to settle or drink the kool-aid! Love freedom of choice...
Posted via CB10
What freedom of choice. I waited almost 4 years for a REAL Blackberry slider, NOT an Android phone with a Blackberry label. If I wanted a Android phone I could have got one years ago. SHAME ON BLACKBERRY.
They should have keep the naming convention of the Slider in an "A" class characterization to represent the use of an Android OS i.e. A10 or I like the word Ascension
- The all new BlackBerry Ascension OR
- The all new BlackBerry A10
Look! It's Zedzilla30!
I think A1 would have been okay. This keeps the future in mind, i.e. the next version will be A2, etc.
Ascension has religious connotations that wouldn't be appreciated by many, aside from being difficult to spell for many also.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
Love the name Ascension!!!
Rise above, stand tall, stand beyond, new level new plane of thoughts all associated with Ascension.
PS: if you can't spell that word, and if your phone or you computer doesn't auto correct you have other issues and shouldn't be using either plain and simple!!!

"Today, BlackBerry is announcing two new additions to its handheld device roadmap." Does that mean there is a possibility of another slider being released with BB10 OS or it just means the continued use and development of BB10 is the second addition? I kind of think this may mean a BB10 OS slider is going to be released as well.

First, the company will launch a flagship slider device, Priv, which will run on the Android operating system....Second, the company will continue to develop and enhance the BlackBerry 10 operating system

"is confirming plans to release platform updates focused on security and privacy enhancements, with version 10.3.3 scheduled to be available in March 2016"
- Lol! Just right! That serves BB10. Just tightening up what's already there... and that's all it will ever be.
The second "addition" is the software update for all existing BB10 handsets to 10.3.3.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10

They don't advertise or do any sort of marketing so most won't know it even exists anyway, regardless of silly name. Just like my passport a year later... what is that? Blackberry is still around?
Posted via CB10
Why is everyone so up in arms about the name? Yes, it wouldn't be my first choice.. but it is just a name. Does it really matter in the grand scheme of usage, functionality, etc?
Posted via CB10
Yes it does.
Building brand recognition is important. An ugly-sounding made-up word that people don't know exactly how to pronounce and is also the nickname for outhouses in the UK is a bad idea.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
In case you haven't noticed, BlackBerry's brand recognition isn't so hot lately.... I doubt the "BlackBerry Priv" is gonna hurt it even more.
Posted via CB10
Oh yes, I had noticed. So that makes a bad name for a new product okay?
You'd hope the goal would be to improve both sales and brand recognition, which go somewhat hand in hand. Of course, common sense hasn't always been the forte of BBRY management.
Actually I like that better:

The name "Priv" lost 3 sales in my house. 4 if I can't deal with it. Hate the name. It sells the product though. It is embarrassing to say I have a Priv.
It's difficult to pronounce. Unbelievable. I'm shocked that Chen talks about cool and sexy and names a potential game changing device the Priv!

We get it stop spamming the same thing.

To Boldly go where no BlackBerry user has gone before... BlackBerry Priv... I'm there... bring it on Chen... bring it on... woo-hoo woot woot :-)
Posted via CB10
I concur.
Thank you! Someone that isn't making a big fuss over the name. People will ultimately say "the new blackberry" anyway. Because they can't recall any of the old ones.
Posted w/an awesome Z10.
It's disappointing when there's a poll saying 4 out of 5 don't like that name, over two thousand people voted No to Priv, so what was the poll for?
Q5 OS10.3.2.2474
It wasn't an official poll from BlackBerry, but agree disappointing they stuck with the name.
Posted via CB10
Embarrassing that the name Priv was even considered. Such a cool phone with high potential again held back by a beyond idiotic name.
One step forward, ten steps back. It's obvious Chen needs software to ramp up asap. They are not focused on hardware or selling it. If they were serious, the name Priv would not exist.
Posted via CB10
Personally I don't care what they call it, I'm more interested in what it can do for.
The BlackBerry Priv name is brilliant.
The word "Priv" embodies lifestyle. --It's private, it's luxury, and it's personal. In a society where everyone desires exclusivity, high end service, great branding, and a boutique style 1-on-1 experience, BlackBerry went with the right name here.
Priv is all about a privileged lifestyle.
I think the Venice embodies that more

Not sure I like the phone. I like the z10.. should make it for android :)
A touch-screen only blackberry phone like the Z10 running Android is plain silly. Hardware-wise, there's nothing that would separate it from the already saturated market of high-end Android phones like the Galaxy's, LG's, HTC's, etc. It would be just another Android phone manufactured by Blackberry.
This phone separates itself by providing a top notch keyboard in a sexy hardware shell that almost resembles the Galaxy Edge. Win-Win
If it’s a saturated market then people must want that type of phone. What is silly about making what people want?
Name slowly growing on me.
Posted via CB10
The name is slowly growing my annoyance and frustration with the horrible name.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
Lol!! Sooner or later you will get over it.
I hated it at first as well but now that I pronounce it like "give", it has started to grow on me as well. It really won't matter in the end as it will be known on the street as the slider anyway.
I'm tired of BlackBerry fans (I am one) saying that they hate the name, but it doesn't matter because people will call it something else. The general public will stay away from the slider because of name alone.
I've seen it myself with my own family. Say what you want about them, but that is the mindset of the general consumer. They're all out now and planned to purchase this device. SMH.
Posted via CB10
Whatever name they will give to this device I'm gonna buy it next year!
I will not buy an Android phone unless it is a BlackBerry Brand!

This release seems backwards... again. When RIM released the Z10 originally it was an all touch phone for the BlackBerry market, which wanted a keyboard. Now that they've gone Android they release a keyboard phone for a market that is comfortable on glass slabs alone. You can argue it either way (and yes, you don't have to use the keyboard blah blah) but I think if BlackBerry wants to do this they need a lower cost Android slab for the masses, and fleets.

This will slowly allow for many new buyers to get comfortable with a blackberry. May very well bring on many many Droid users. Priv is essentially a new version of "Droid One". Remember how popular that motorola device was once?

Anyone know how to pronounce "Priv"? Is it like "privacy" or "privilege"?
Envoyé par mon Z10
It's pronounced Venice lol.
Posted via CB10
Shh! Don't bring up obvious questions please!
BBRY doesn't want you to know that, just wonder, then not talk about it because you don't know how to say it.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
Yes.. Priv.. like give.. privacy and privilege.
Thanks!
Envoyé par mon Z10
I still don't get it. Should have listened in to the CC. I pronounce give different from privacy... so is it Priv as in give (Perv if you aren't really paying attention) or Priiive as in the word privacy?
Give and privacy are completely different... maybe I need to re-read the comment lol. Can't believe this is for real.
Posted via CB10
The pronunciation debacle with BlackBerry branded phones continues. First it was the Zee10 Zed10 now we have the Priv like give or Priv like hive.
Whose naming these phones at BlackBerry? Are they hiring because I can think of odd names to: BlackBerry Wind...is it wind like breeze or wind like you would a clock?
They laugh at me because I'm different; I laugh at them because they're all the same.
Think of the European pronunciation, it would have a 'soft' I. Like tomAto, tomato. Hard and soft. PrIvacy, privacy. I still don't like the name, but I'll buy the phone. I will still call it the Venice. And I guess if I don't like it, I can always upgrade my Z10 to 10.3.3 around March. (My Z10's third birthday.) While waiting for the Z50. :)
It's pronounced Priv, like in "Priv"acy, isn't it obvious. It is also pronounced Priv like in Privey LOL..
I wanted a release date :(

Yeah no kidding.

Would be interesting to know if 'Blandroid' will be made available for other models like Passport or Z30.
"Today, BlackBerry is announcing two new additions to its handheld device roadmap."
The first addition is obviously the Priv (hate the name, hate the OS, hope it fails).
But what's the second?
You have to hope it fails because you don't want it? Wow, very mature.
The second "addition" is the software update for all existing BB10 handsets to 10.3.3.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
I hope it fails because that will probably end the "BlackBerry phones with Android" path, and they'll focus on BB10 again.
Or just quit the hardware business all together, but at least we'll have clarity then.
I am a fan of BlackBerry because of their focus on security. Android will remain a big bullseye for hackers for the forseeable future, and the Android base software will remain vulnerable, it doesn't matter how much add-ons you put on there.
So nothing immature, I hope it fails for all the right reasons.
As for BB 10.3.3: quite disappointing if this is the only thing that's happening for BB10.
They won't focus on BB10 again. 10.3.3 is strictly a maintenance release. Your only hope is the BlackBerry Experience Suite on top of Android or iOS. On non-BlackBerry hardware, it'll be even more watered down than what's on the Priv, especially any iOS version which we haven't even heard anything about). At this point, the only options are to completely jump ship (with or without the BB Experience Suite), go with the Android BlackBerry, or use older BB10 devices which will be further degraded over time as native development continues to fade and Android apps continue to be less compatible. It really does suck.
The Android BlackBerry might be the least unattractive option here. I don't like Android, but if I have to use Android, I'd feel the most comfortable with BlackBerry I suppose. Even if it's only because of the fact that the software seems visually similar to BB10. iPhone is good, but not worth the price (and I think the iPhone 6(s) is an ugly looking device). There is still Windows Phone too, but from what I gather, it still isn't getting any traction. And I think the usability of WP leaves much to be desires as well. Same for Windows 10 actually.
I'm starting to wonder, Is it just me or does (mobile) technology really suck nowadays?
Yeah, it sucks that we are stuck in a mobile duopoly. Universal/web apps with web notification APIs just aren't quite there yet to end this ecosystem tyranny. It just seems like we've been on the cusp for years, but it's just not happening, and power continues to consolidate for Apple and Google.
Really sad to see that the masses don't understand what a beautiful piece of software BB10 is...
But well, it wouldn't be the first time that incredible technology bites the dust because of the cruel way how economy works.
If this thing fails, they will exit the handset business, trust me... this move smells like an act of desperation...
800'000 BB10 in one quarter... BlackBerry is basically the only phone manufacturer in the world that needs to count in thousands and not in millions...
Ferrari ZetaTrenta STA100-2 Versione 10.3.1.652
When we see the price tag, we'll know how desperate they are.
I don't have a clue how much devices they need to sell to remain (somewhat) profitable, however there are other niche phone manufacturers that are doing just fine, like the ones who manufacture rugged or ATEX/IECEx phones. However, they just use stock Android, so they don't have an OS to maintain...
How the heck they stay "commited" while the new device runs Hangdroid?!
By being pragmatic and real, that's how they stay committed.
Man I was really hoping they would allow a choice in OS when you first boot up a Priv... still getting it lol

When my fabulous Z30 dies, I will buy an iPhone.
Posted via CB10
Get a OnePlus Two instead. IPhone is the way to the darkside
I still want a Z50
Which is the second hardware device on the roadmap???
Posted via CB10
The second "addition" is the software update for all existing BB10 handsets to 10.3.3.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
The phone will tank...so "Priv" is actually what they're calling it? Ridiculous.
Posted via CB10
Very disappointed. If I wanted android, I would have bought a samsung or HTC. I want BlackBerry hardware running BlackBerry 10. They should release it with both and let users choose. Now that would be a first in the industry.
Posted via CB10
No, wouldn't be a first. There are several examples of companies releasing same hardware with choice of Android or Windows Phone. Recent example that comes to mind is HTC One.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
Although I am glad they finally announced the phone I just can't stop that gut feeling that the usefulness of my BlackBerry Passport days just got much shorter and that I feel betrayed by the company. If this phone is success full and I think it will be it wouldn't surprise me if BlackBerry stops BB10 and goes full Android in the next 2 to 3 years.
Posting WIDE with CB10 on the Blackberry Passport
Can't wait to see this phone. In spite of the whining BlackBerry has to do something to make hardware profitable again. If you can't make money on BB10 alone then you have to try something else.
No one is telling you BB10 is going away or discontinued. No one is forcing anyone to buy a 'Priv'.

Typical corporate Bulls hit, jump through fucking loops to appease and aquire new customers meanwhile existing customers are told to shut up and color with crayons, don't worry about the new kids with the cool spray paint and paint delivery system
Posted via CB10
What if they announce a new BB10 phone in a couple months? Does that mean they're telling their new Android customers to stuff it?
Nope. And this doesn't mean they're saying that to BB10 customers now either. Companies like Samsung and HTC have made both Android and Windows Phone hardware, so it's not unheard of.
Posted from my Z30 via CB10
That's a good point.
I still hope they actually do release it with BB10.
And keep calling it Venice.
I hate Android, and iOS. I've tried them, tried them again, and yet again for good measure. I keep coming back to BB10.
Posted via CB10
800,000 units sold is very pathetic, don't you think? And you want BlackBerry to die trying to appease you?
Yes I do. Blackberry came out with an iBerry (Z10) then a 1/2 Berry (Q10) then another iBerry (Z30) and so on, WHY did they not produce a REAL slider years ago. Now if I want to stick with a REAL Blackberry I have to get a Classic or Passport. I will stick with my REAL 9810 for now and if they make a BB10 slider I will buy it. I have stuck with Blackberry for many years and they go to Android?
Now it's time for Jolla to announce BlackBerry Passport or Priv like device. As I care about user experience and from today's platforms, only Sailfish OS is BlackBerry 10 alternative.
Posted via CB10
If it doesn't run BlackBerry OS 10 then I'm out, but I do understand the motive and need to make BlackBerry phones running Android for the survival of BlackBerry. As long as my Passport Web browser functions well, I'll stay on it for as long as I can. My hope is that we'll have the option of running Priv with OS10 if we choose to. These, 'BlackBerry is a traitor', posts are eXtremely child-ish. I suppose they prefer BlackBerry to completely exit handsets to focus on solely being a security business? Chen as successfully kept BlackBerry going forward where everyone else has failed.
They are so arrogant. And so disrespectful of the Crackberry faithful that they can't even take into consideration the disaster that is the name they chose.
Chen is a world class asshole of a CEO and makes Donald Trump seem like Rosie O'Donnell in comparison.

Lol. Not only that, he hasn't a clue about sales & marketing.
