BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.56 Now Available For Download
By
Bla1ze on 17 Dec 2009 09:20 pm
Time for another BlackBerry Messenger update everyone. This time we have version 5.0.0.56 now available for download through the BlackBerry Messenger website. No changelog or anything to go with it but from everything that has been released so far, it's just cleaning up some of the previously know issues making it just a general maintainence release. As it stands, BlackBerry App World has yet to reflect the changes so probably best to just download direct from the BlackBerry website.
mookish Dec 17, 2009 at 9:28 pm
On it!
wolfscot Dec 20, 2009 at 10:32 am
SORRY FOR ALL CAPS, BUT I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION!
HERE IS THE LINK FOR THE LATEST VERSION OF BBM 5.0.0.56!
http://mobileapps.blackberry.com/dev...ry.do?code=bbm
USE THAT LINK IN YOUR BROWSER ON YOUR BLACKBERRY AND IT SHOULD SOLVE ANY AND ALL PROBLEMS YOU WERE EXPERIENCING WITH THE OLDER VERSION OF BBM. HOWEVER, WHEN I DID IT, IT ERASED ALL MY BBM CONTACTS FROM MY BBM LIST (200 OR SO CONTACTS) BUT WHEN MY MOM DID THE UPGRADE TO 5.0.0.56 HER 5 CONTACTS EASILY, AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHED OVER. BE SURE TO BACK-UP YOUR INFORMATION BEFORE DOING THIS UPGRADE. OTHER THAN THAT, THANK GOD THAT STATUS UPDATES ARE BACK! ENJOY THE NEW BBM AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!
YITBOS7 Dec 20, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Wolfscot, thanks for the info, but it seems your post isn't showing the entire link. Some "...'s" have replaced some important parts of the URL -- and I'm not too familiar with what is usually in that space. Are you able to post a shortened version of it, or perhaps split it into two lines? Thanks again!
xoxoxKN Dec 17, 2009 at 9:30 pm
downloading now!
muneton17 Dec 17, 2009 at 9:31 pm
What possibly could be changed from the 55?
sk8er_tor Dec 17, 2009 at 10:20 pm
With the .55 version, spell check did not work on devices running operating systems lower than 5.0.
Evermore707 Dec 17, 2009 at 9:31 pm
suspicious
VDub2174 Dec 17, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Didn't they just make 5.0.0.55 official?
Edsosa Dec 17, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Downloading to see what the noticeable difference is, if any.
polishdroiduser Dec 17, 2009 at 9:33 pm
hmmm BIS goes down but new BBM hmmmm...
dalejr88nascar Dec 17, 2009 at 9:41 pm
downloading now.. i wonder what changes could possibly have been made??? any input???
skitchbeatz Dec 17, 2009 at 9:46 pm
RIM's just messing with us enthusiasts
bayzbol44 Dec 17, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Anyone know why in the newer versions of BBM, you have to "Accept" pictures now? Is there a way I can change the settings so I accept automatically?
dalejr88nascar Dec 17, 2009 at 9:49 pm
i have yet to see this..
bayzbol44 Dec 17, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Really? Every time someone sends me a pic it shows up as a little pic and then it will ask me if I want to accept or deny the picture. I have a 8900 BB from T-Mobile. A friend had the same version of BBIM and she is with VZ and she said it did the same thing. It did not function like this before the 5.0 version. My BB software is 4.6.
sk8er_tor Dec 17, 2009 at 10:31 pm
What you're seeing is a picture preview. The OP is asking for an auto accept just like the voicenote auto accept option that is now available. I'm sure we'll soon see an auto accept option for pictures.
web1997 Dec 17, 2009 at 9:49 pm
spell check works

When it comes to these updates
artie Dec 17, 2009 at 9:54 pm
OS4.5?
lewisc1979 Dec 17, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Yeah, it seems to work just fine on 0S 4.5 for me.
artie Dec 17, 2009 at 10:23 pm
Do I uninstall v53 first?
lewisc1979 Dec 17, 2009 at 10:25 pm
It should install right over the previous version. However, it wouldn't hurt to back up your contacts...just in case.
artie Dec 17, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Thank you.
lewisc1979 Dec 17, 2009 at 10:13 pm
It's showing up in App World now.
jsn204 Dec 17, 2009 at 10:20 pm

id be in heaven
Hockeypuck55 Dec 17, 2009 at 10:22 pm
i have spell check back (9630)
sk8er_tor Dec 17, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Way to go RIM working on the spell-check fix so quickly. Great job!
Not showing up for me in App World at 10:24PM ET.
Interesting though that .56 is 2.4MB versus 3.0MB for version .55.
katiepea Dec 18, 2009 at 12:52 am
.55 was 2.4MB
ceepee Dec 17, 2009 at 10:29 pm
I've been bitching and moaning about the picture view on these latest BBM updates and now I can finally stop. They finally got it right! This latest one is perfect.
shboy Dec 17, 2009 at 10:32 pm
So far so good!! spell check is back on my Bold! running smooth. no issue, no complaint!!
white2003 Dec 17, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Bing is now my only search in the browser since I upgraded to .56 and rebooted.
sk8er_tor Dec 17, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Has nothing to do with BBM. It has to do with the fact that you restarted your device. VZW has been pushing Bing search to all VZW devices and it shows up only after restarting.
xmalibux11 Dec 18, 2009 at 12:55 am
I guess I am one of the lucky few that still has Google as their main search engine. Even after doing a reboot when I installed BBM.
devGOD Dec 17, 2009 at 10:36 pm
out of all the phone brands that i've own, the Blackberry is at the top of the list of phone that requires a shitload of updates. On average about ever 3-4 days i'm updating something on my blackberry.
Krypto Dec 17, 2009 at 10:36 pm
A minor glitch with the emoticons was also fixed with this update.
Linus_rs Dec 17, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Spellcheck was fixed on my Bold running 4.6 but when i click the preview button it shows a small picture...it doesn't help much and still have to accept it to see the image in large size...
WyckedAnkh Dec 17, 2009 at 10:53 pm
After the update before this one, I think I will wait a couple days before I start downloading...
ixdnL Dec 17, 2009 at 11:27 pm
I was downloading this and put my phone aside to let it finish. I come back to it and all I get is a black screen. If I press alt or caps the symbol on the top right corner of the screen shows up. However, the rest of the screen is black. What happened?
ixdnL Dec 17, 2009 at 11:28 pm
Never mind. After playing with it a bit more and trying to alt + right shift + del it just came back without restarting. Strange.
juicebox666 Dec 17, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Just installed .56 and now I can't back up my contacts! Don't notice any other crippling, um, I mean chnages. LOL
tamazoid Dec 18, 2009 at 1:02 am
That menu is under Options now... I got confused at first as well.
luloo Dec 17, 2009 at 11:47 pm
I keep getting an error "907 Invalid COD". Anyone else have the same problem?
Leon_berry Dec 18, 2009 at 12:09 am
Downloaded it and now I have my spell check back..
jcd559 Dec 18, 2009 at 12:10 am
I'm so happy that the spell check feature is fixed with this update.
Leon_berry Dec 18, 2009 at 12:11 am
Downloaded it and now I have my spell check back..
labelexec Dec 18, 2009 at 12:20 am
installed it and got uncaught exception: no application instance. now no email or anything. tried hard reset and resending service books.
kato10 Dec 18, 2009 at 12:33 am
Sooooooo...what's the difference??
Scion.Nole Dec 18, 2009 at 12:41 am
Interesting...Hope it doesn't backfire but I'll give it a shot
jhagg Dec 18, 2009 at 12:53 am
Is it me or can you not pull up chat history with contacts on the last two updates???
Attiqmalik Dec 18, 2009 at 12:55 am
What is going on. A new BBM leak everyday!
adood84 Dec 18, 2009 at 1:25 am
this isn't a leak its an official version :)
katiepea Dec 18, 2009 at 4:41 am
lol
Snypa Dec 18, 2009 at 1:54 am
so good for me.installed smoothly...up and running.
evorc Dec 18, 2009 at 2:22 am
Stop whining!!!! why would anybody stupid enough to complain about updates? don't you know what updates are for? they fix bugs!!! would you rather not have RIM try to fix these? so annoying....
slim2007 Dec 18, 2009 at 2:42 am
gat my spell check back & search engine remains google!!
j8lacy Dec 18, 2009 at 3:39 am
im updating from .33 to this...hopefully the update is worth it....
ShanMan77 Dec 18, 2009 at 3:50 am
After reading the reviews from the previous update, I am most definitely WAITING.... Hahaha. I used to be one to "jump-right-on-it", but NO PLEASE. I'll pass and stay with 5.0.0.33 for now!! Hahaha
katiepea Dec 18, 2009 at 4:43 am
why would a past review influence a current choice? that sort of dosen't make sense. did you read the reviews for THIS one? everyone is saying it fixes their issues...after reading reviews of windows 3.11 i don't think i'm going to install windows 7.
nubgen Dec 18, 2009 at 5:16 am
smooth and have spell check again :)
jblake#cb Dec 18, 2009 at 7:12 am
I like every part of this app on my Tour. However, yesterday, I tried to install it on three of my co-workers' Blackberries and ran into a major issue- memory. The Pearl and Curve have such a limited amount of memory I could not install the apps. So, my only issue is that the file size is too large for these two phones. I still like it, but not everyone manages their memory close enough to use this cool app.
ahmed.a1234 Dec 18, 2009 at 7:14 am
Finally!!! Pic sending is perfect, at least for me :) you get the preview which can be viewed instantly and can also be saved by pressing bb button and choosing save after opening the preview OR you have the option of dowanloading a higher resolution version of the pic. I'm happy.
kjs1977 Dec 18, 2009 at 7:55 am
If you go to Application Properties for BBM, there is a description saying.
"The latest version of BlackBerry Messenger addresses some of the issues identified in BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.33, such as file transfer not working or working slowly, no file preview, and file transfer requests expiring after a short period of time. This version does not include any new features. The Check Spelling As You Type feature has also been restored for all devices"
champr Dec 18, 2009 at 7:56 am
Why is it that when I goto the blackberry.com/messenger site it shows the size as 2.4MB but on App World it shows 3.0MB? Is there a difference in them? Also, when I look at the installed size of .55 it shows over 3MB. Someone else stated it was only 2.4MB. Just courious.
champr Dec 18, 2009 at 8:06 am
Installing .56 from the blackberry.com/messenger site the installed size is 2.6MB. Smaller than the installed size of 3.1MB of .55. Guess that is one benefit of upgrading.
bobby1874 Dec 18, 2009 at 8:09 am
the Nextel 8350i had a contact list issue in that after a reboot you could not search the contact list. This BBM update seems to have fixed that issue. It must have been a compability with the .313 OS upgrade a few weeks back.
rey_1178 Dec 18, 2009 at 8:38 am
yes its working again. good job rim on fixing this quick!
Robert Calhoun Dec 18, 2009 at 8:39 am
Not only do I still have Google, but I was only asked to replace the version once, instead of having to replace every module like it did with the last couple of upgrades...
Everything seems to be working as expected... I didn't have a spell check issue as I am on a Storm running 5.0...
bassplaya51 Dec 18, 2009 at 8:46 am
This is freaking great! New BBM everyday! Now if we could get new OS's more often we'd be in business. Don't really see any change to the performance...I just like seeing "5.0.0.56" beside "version"...makes me happy.
mstiffany7 Dec 18, 2009 at 8:48 am
I wonder if this one corrected that problem.
wwwdotanthony Dec 18, 2009 at 9:49 am
Wow, just upgraded to .55 yesterday.. I guess I'll roll the dice and try .56
Sexy NJ Dec 18, 2009 at 10:11 am
I downloaded this new version. I see it on my phone under applications. But the icon is NOWHERE on the phone. I have looked in all folders, done the "show all" and nothing!!!!! What do I do??? Of course, I did NOT to a back up before this since I did the other one earlier this week and have done them before with no problems. I am on the Tour, running whatever is the current official OS 4.7.1.57! OMG PLease help me!!!!
Sexy NJ Dec 18, 2009 at 11:46 am
.56 is not for me on the Tour. I completely took off BBM and then added back .55 and then tried it again. Nothing!!!! Guess I will just have to spell incorrectly for a while!!! If anyone can think of what I can do, please let me know. Battery pull, re-downloaded, checked all folders, etc have all been done. Enjoy the new version CB Fam!!!
Sexy NJ Dec 18, 2009 at 2:27 pm
When I decided to give up....delete the old one completely and reinstall the .55 version.....the .56 WORKS!!!! LOL So now I have .56 with spell check. This made my day..although I did have to resend invites to about 15 contacts, it was worth it. Have a great weekend everyone!
Sgt_Smoker Dec 18, 2009 at 10:23 am
just pulled this upgrade off of appworld!
kelsey09 Dec 18, 2009 at 11:02 am
I don't see it on my app world yet! I have the Bold.. Is it running smoothly for it??
Stevehose Dec 18, 2009 at 11:08 am
My homescreen N shortcut no longer works - anyone else have this happen???????
Stevehose Dec 18, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Fixed by rinstalling
StorminMama Dec 18, 2009 at 11:46 am
After downloading this, my phone just didn't work properly. From the home screen when I'd press the BB button, it wouldn't take me to the apps screen like it should. I had to rotate to landscape. Then if I pressed the BB button again for the menu, I had to rotate back to portrait to view the menu. Once I made my choice, I had to rotate it yet again to view the option I chose. The lag was also awful. I even tried going back to the native theme and that didn't work. So, I had do downgrade to .33 but now my phone works the way it's supposed to.
crystinonfire Dec 21, 2009 at 5:21 am
same thing happened to me. suuuch a lag with everything. i need .33 back.

kelsey09 Dec 18, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Are you all downloading from bbmessenger site or app world??
framos242 Dec 18, 2009 at 2:19 pm

SPELL CHECK WORKS 8900 CURVE AT&T
jennberton Dec 18, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Everytime, I go to hit the enlarge option, it doesn't show me the picture!!! I didn't have this problem @ first!! And ho come they took the option to change pic size when sending pics through BBM!
Seabilly Dec 18, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I downloaded the new BBM on my curve and it still askes me to accept or decline the pic. I thought they fixed it so you can view it. Any tips?
sk8er_tor Dec 18, 2009 at 4:22 pm
You still have to accept or decline. But you now have the option to Preview.
Remember that some people don't have a huge data plan and would not want to automatically receive pictures and files. I do think they should have an option to auto-accept though.
jhilla Dec 18, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I found when I frequently typed to the same contact, the typing box at the bottom of bbm stays blank white. Also "recent updates" section is bugged up, it updates the same ppl's info when you reboot. ie: such and such "changed there display pic or name"
i shoulda stuck w/ .55, never had the blank box, when i was typing before such a nuisance
Phongables Dec 18, 2009 at 7:35 pm
anyone having problems with this bbm? Some messages arent getting through
Harry Dunn Dec 18, 2009 at 8:35 pm
im having the same issue an its driving me nuts!!!
jzachlee Dec 19, 2009 at 5:25 am
same here!! some of my messages are lost in the "cloud" and never get delivered!!
GapBoyPCS Dec 18, 2009 at 8:30 pm
I got the update notice on my commute in. I waited until I got into my office before updating. I can only assume there were just too many people downloading the update because it didn't want to fully download the first time. I tried again, and things went smoothly.
So far, everything seems to be running well. Thankfully the spellcheck feature is back. I can only assume it's because my Bold has OS 4.6. I'm actually VERY surprised that this update has come so fast. I would have expected an update to come in a month's time. Excellent move RIM.
Blade_27 Dec 18, 2009 at 11:27 pm
I've upgraded to .56 and I STILL can't get my bb messenger to restore contacts by using e-mail. I've already received my confirmation on my pc and I've received unrelated e-mail on my pc & my device after the confirmation but no confirmation on my device and my contacts is still empty!?
*edit prob seems to have fixed itself... some 3 hours later.
rmayor Dec 19, 2009 at 12:06 am
After upgrading through AppWorld to this new version, I can no longer get into SMS/MMS. I just get "Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException". I've tried rebooting, but that didn't help. I guess I'll try uninstalling next...
s7mk Dec 19, 2009 at 12:41 am
.55 was acting weird, not sending or receiving messages. .56 makes my tour freeze.
jzachlee Dec 19, 2009 at 5:24 am
Is it just me? I upgraded to .56 and suddenly, my messages to my contacts get intermittent. What I mean is that sometimes, the msg goes through and she receives it and reads it, sometimes it just gets stuck and not delivered (no "D" or "R" next to the tick). And sometimes, the msgs will suddenly all go into her inbox, jumbled up. Is this happening to anyone else??
rolf90 Dec 19, 2009 at 2:43 pm
can i just upgrade from app world?? or do i have to delete my .33 messenger before i go to .56??
ilovejackbauer Dec 19, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Will this version of BBM work with a Tour OS 5.0?
constantine24us Dec 20, 2009 at 2:10 pm
I've tried the various ways everyone has mentioned and none of them work. I can not access from my 8330's browser or from any computer browser. The links either direct me to an earlier version of BBM or say it's an invalid link.
