Amidst all the BlackBerry app updates recently, one update slipped a bit through the cracks despite it being a pretty darn good one. BlackBerry Express, the beta mobile presentation tool released by BlackBerry, got a little bit of a version bump and along with it came several stability and performance improvements.

What's New:

  • Overall stability and performance improvements with attention to graphic handling and BlackBerry Express presentations shown on external displays.
  • Usability enhancements including: image file picker 'previous location' logic and navigation support using volume up and down keys.
  • Wireless presenter accessory support via the BlackBerry Z30's USB Host Mode.

The app now sits at v1.0.1.16 and is available as a free download for all BlackBerry 10 smartphones running 10.2+ in all countries. Previously folks asked how they could submit feedback on the beta app given that it wasn't in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. BlackBerry Express actually has the feedback portion built right into the app, you can access it from the overflow menu where it says 'Give use feedback'. Honestly, you should click that just to see how cool the feedback section actually looks and works.

I face the same issue. The slide show will just freeze sometimes & when I quit the app, my z10 freezes.

Really great to see that they listen to feedback.
I missed a way to use a Click-Presenter (wireless USB) connected to my Z30 to walk around and demo.
Wrote a small test app to capture the Keys clicked from Logitech and Kensington Presenters, sent to Cascades team and they implemented it :)
So if there's no Miracast - wireless connection and Z30 is connected via HDMI Cable, I can place it on the table and use the wireless Click-Pointer.
cool !

BTW: I requested same support from DocsToGo team, got confirmation that it will be done, but release-cycles are longer there. If this is added there, you can use the Click-Pointers for PPT presentations same way as using them with a laptop.

So we have your ingenuity to thank for this update. Thanks!

That's amazing man! I'm quite pleasantly surprised to hear that they used it.

Maybe BlackBerry developers can do more of this

Thanks to you :)

Can you post some links to the exact hardware we need to set this up?

yep: here's the hardware I tested and sent the key-codes to Cascades team:
Kensington: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B009L6DXLW/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie...
Logitech: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B009TFBDKI/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i02?ie...
Links are from Amazon.de but you'll find these everywhere. Both have Pros and Cons. Kensington also works great from OSX, Kensington has green pointer where Logitech has a red one. Kensington has two modes and also can be used as a Mouse, but Mouse cursor is slow on Z30 - but works. Both have wireless USB and will be recognized from Z30 immediately. I will blog about the keys used - so if you're a developer and want to use them inside your own apps this will also work.

Hope they include a way to export the presentation to a PC compatible output file. Heck it would be fine even if it exported as some sort of flash animation or video. Current html export option doesn't do if justice.

I totally agree! Deck format would be much better then current option.

Great app! A very helpful app.

This is an excellent application. The type of material BlackBerry should be building on as the company refocuses on the business sector. The bells and whistles add to the presentation. And makes me a much better presentator than I actually am. Keep it coming. It's great.

As far as I am concerned this is the best app on the market. The possibilities are endless. Key is ease of use and fresh new approach to creating and displaying presentations. Looking forward to using the feedback section. Yes I do love creating the presentations in usb host mode using keyboard /mouse and then unplugging presenting directly from the z30 via miracast. I can make quick edits using figure gestures on the fly while rehearsing in the boardroom.
Need to know how to export the presentation to other bb10 devices so colleagues can view and modify the presentation and send back. Maybe the new version can do it or maybe the old could do it and I don't know how. Tried moving the Json file around but did not spend much time on it.

I agree that would be a great feature. To date I also haven't been able to figure it out.

I'm still missing a way to easily insert an additional bullet. Also a way to reorder them (other than intensive cut, paste, cut, paste...

Would also be a must that bullet text could flow to a second line. Today even if text is not exceeding the limited number of character it may not display it all in presentation mode...

Otherwise that's quite a nice an handy apps.

This works beautifully on my Q10 over Miracast. This is the best way to prepare presentations on the go.

Dear Blackberry,
Please now add some additional features to Storymaker. Give us a few more options like the ability to NOT having to have the credits at the beginning and end.

It's unavailable for the Q5 still.

Apparently the lack of support for the BlackBerry Q5 is due to the lack of HDMI-out and/or miracast. An unfortunate short-sighted design decision for the smartphone.

Q5 supports Miracast. Why they aren't making it unavailable for the device is beyond me. I've tweeted BlackBerry Help and Gary Klassen(responsible for the app) multiple times but it has been ignored.

I think the idea is good although the idea of creating a presentation on a smart phone is rather shocking. I make many presentations for business use but I would find using this difficult or cumbersome. I am asked to give presentations on technical subjects that may be 30 minutes long and involve numbers and charts. I like the organization and use of effective photos and backgrounds, but things like tables and charts do not seem native? This would be key for me.

I love this app. I have starting making little training videos that I put on a TV via hdmi cable and have received positive comments from my people

if you are looking at the presentation with no slides open, press and hold on a slide, a menu will come out on the right side that will allow you to insert a bullet, Chapter, or text.

Make the changes and save. It you want to move it, press and hold on the slide on the far side of it, which will allow you to move the slide to whichever position in the presentation you want.

I haven't tried it, but I believe if you do the same for a chapter, the whole chapter moves.

I would rather BlackBerry focus on the OS and hardware, and encourage and support 3rd party developers to do this kind of stuff.

This is an app I am enjoying. I do presentations all the time. I would rather have the app on my playbook than my phone; even though I've been known to bang out long documents on my Q10.

Doesn't work on 10.1. A lot of ATT customers here in the US cannot get this app.
