BlackBerry’s preparing for the developer launch of BlackBerry 10.3 with an update to their public roadmap. Though there are a few nice additions due to land in May, but the most noteworthy thing about the following 10.3.1 update is that Adobe AIR won’t be included as an on-device runtime. Devs that have made apps that use AIR can port their creations over to Android or WebWorks easily enough, according to the FAQ they wrote for the end of life for AIR.

Besides that, here’s what features we can see on the native runtime roadmap, Android runtime roadmap, and WebWorks roadmap.

Native

  • OpenMax
  • Pro Voice
  • Design Units
  • New Asset Selector
  • New Layout
  • App Colorization
  • List Rearrange
  • 64-bit tools (The Momentics IDE will include Native 64-bit support for Windows, OSX and Linux.)
  • Pretty Painters
  • Card Templates

WebWorks

  • Enhanced Tooling
  • Headless Apps
  • Work Perim. Debug
  • APIs

Android Runtime

  • Runtime Update
  • Accounts
  • Bluetooth LE
  • NFC
  • Share Framework V2
  • Tooling Update

We’ve already seen what’s available in the BlackBerry 10.3 leak, but what features would you like to see? Is this list looking good? How many developers here have built their apps using AIR? Is it going to be a huge hassle changing over to WebWorks or Android?

Can someone make sense of what all this means to a non tech-savy nor a developer as myself?

Why do you want this update? Because technical stuff. I like it :) To be honest, I don't fully understand Adobe Air myself, I thought it was a good thing, lightweight and efficient. Is that not the case?

Will they be sneaking in google play svcs like they did with android runtime itself? That would be the question.

Why is it that the BlackBerry z10 STL 100 won't support da new OS? Lyk it's nt far coz we all using a z10 t matters nt f urs doesn't support LTE bt we wd appreciate it a lot f t wil support t of make a plan 4t

Why do you still use these outdated abbreviations if your posting from your BlackBerry?

You'd be faster just flicking the correctly spelled words on a Z, or hacking and tapping on the Q. ;-)

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

It would be nice to have Contacts work the way it's supposed to work in theory. I still can't get all of my contacts to sync properly and every time I connect to Link certain contacts unlink from social networks and I'm stuck with like 4 of the same contact

Wow its unbelievable some people don't even have 10.2 and they already talking about 10.3. He we go again!!!

Does any of this mean blacklist phone numbers?

Does any of it mean no more accidental phone calls and photos?

Nope no Plan to Block specific Numbers depending on a Black - / Whitelist. Its not planned for 10.3. Maybe for 10.4 in 2015 but after over a Year asking for this, I already have given hope up on this thing -.-

I've given up on BlackBerry making the OS do anything from 7.1 or Android can do. It would be a kick ass OS if we had anything to do with it. :)

So is this a potential cost savings for BlackBerry? Is there a charge for the runtime library? How do we encourage developers to go native versus Android?

Dear BlackBerry. Kill the cutesy animations; they add nothing and waste time. Flatten out the OS and lose the complexities. Make bb10 simple and consumers might actually buy it. Also, one gesture to close apps, please. One gesture to access main hub, too. Otherwise your OS concept is just too fiddly and less efficient than home-button approaches. Make it work. The market is telling you it isn't.

I would like to know if the Google Play Service issue will be resolved in 10.3.

When I go to the quick setting page and making a selection like notification I'd like to be able to hit back and go to a another quick setting like blue tooth

android!!!

sometimes, android apps running sluggish, like popping "not responding, wait or close?" i hate this. if 10.3 can fix this. i would be more happier!!!!

(i had lots of friends bought bb10 devices. i hope 10.3 can bring good stuff..)

Being able to screenshot my beautiful screen even if it is locked. Better earphones. Premium chargers coming with your phone not the trash they always put in the box. And seriously Google Play support already BlackBerry

I really hope they fix the taking photos and calling people by accident thing The buttons are placed at wrong place , and when the calling active frame is open OMG I called so many people by accident and took so many photos.

I love BlackBerry 10 and own two Z10 but this is really annoying! Pls fix OS.

This is stupid by BlackBerry. Adobe AIR with Starling is awesome for games and AIR using Feathers is great for apps. COUNTLESS apps have been written with AIR for Android as well as iOS(compiles native for iOS). I just cannot see Adobe making AIR compile to native BlackBerry as much as I would like to see it. Which means, even less developers to create apps for BlackBerry. So again...stupid.

Pardon my lack of tech knowledge but do any of these changes bring full functionality to Android apps on the BlackBerry 10 devices?

Meaning, many of the android apps I've installed work but won't push notifications to my device even though they are built to. Foes any of this mean that Android apps built to push notifications will actually do so? (example Score Mobile, Scoremobile FC instagram etc)

I have a request! Its small but it would be perfect for me.

I'd like to be able to change notifications by just clicking on the icon and not entering directly into it. Currently it only gives two options, the one you're on and the previous one you had.

I frequently change from vibrate to normal to silent and that would be a big deal to me...

Thanks for looking!

Posted using the best phone ever, the Z30!

I had this discussion with one of my friends, where he made wondering, how is it that none of the OSes integrates profiles with calendar? Especially bb, since it is an OS honed for productivity. Would be nice to see in future updates.

What I would really like to say is better landscape capability and bottom bar management .I mean swiping left to right isn't good enough if u want to maintain BlackBerry 10.moreover,file manager definitely needs some changes.

I really hope, the new OS brings back the ability for my BlackBerry to turn off and On automatically when the time is programmed by me. Had the feature on my BOLD 4 BBOS

You know I'd like to see the creation or the re implementation of the the business card in the contacts folder.
You know where you can create your own contact and assign it as your business card so you can send it to whoever and however you want so they can add to their contacts.

Z10 Post.....

And all this is supposed to drop in May, which means we could have another Gold candidate by Fall! Yay!

So many great ideas from so many people on this thread. This is the kind of thing that would make BB10 great.

Not defending the status quo or saying to do without. That is what is killing BlackBerry. If BlackBerry listened to BlackBerry users that aren't afraid to criticize - they would be far better off than listening to the "yes men".

Looks interesting... with all that techy stuff... just hope they fix the duplicate issue in the phone book... and allow for more customization of allowance for apps in the hub

I'm glad AdobeAIR is biting the dust, now certain AIR apps that have BFB status can bugger off and die too.

Here's hoping in 10.4 BlackBerry kill off the Android RT too.

It would be great if "auto bcc" comes with 10.3. My Z30 would then become a really super business tool.
